A long time ago…
I was young and naive. I thought I could save the world. I thought that protecting those around me from hurt and pain was what I was born to do. She made me feel that way. Ava Links, the little girl who was too fucking stubborn for her own good. The little girl who absorbed the hurt and pain of everyone around her and tried to bring sunshine to them all. The little girl who didn’t give a damn if people picked on her about wearing a crown and tutu every day. A little girl who somehow looked at me, expecting—no, damn near demanding—I protect her.
I saw the pain she hid, and as I grew older, I understood that pain. The pain of being so much to so many that there is really never a “you”.
I took control of my life…
I had to get away from everyone who pulled at me in order to claim myself. When I became the man I was destined to be, I began to live. Then, one drunken night, Ava Links, no longer a little girl, said the right damn thing to me, and everything changed. After seven years of fucking her while home on leave with no expectations, now my life is out of control…
One bad dream, one I love you, one night of pushing her the hell out of my life, one drummer stealing her heart, and one explosion took everything away.
Lies are told.
Lies are unraveling.
Lies are going to destroy.
These are my truths.

Now he wants to be part of my life again—when I can finally see a future for my son and myself. I’ve found the perfect man in David, someone I can start over with, a man who will be the perfect father figure for Trevor. I have a plan. At last, I see the light, and I know I can make this work.
I will not let Aiden Rogers drag me back into the darkness.

Laurie
Laurie glanced at the folded piece of paper in her hand. She made sure the penthouse suite was on the list of rooms ready for cleaning, then swerved her cleaning cart around, and backed up to the door. With practiced fluidity, she swiped her key card and opened the door wide, ready to prop it open, before she sensed the presence of another person. She looked up. What she saw stopped her cold.
A man with salt and pepper hair stood there. Dressed in a trim, black suit, his long hair dangled to the crisp, white collar of his button-down shirt. His hair thinned on either side of a widow’s peak. Several deep pockmarks dotted each of his tanned and weathered cheeks, accentuating his prominent cheekbones. He looked like any other businessman on the islands, except that extending from his hand was a polished, silver gun, gleaming in the light streaming in from the open doorway.
The man looked at Laurie with a mixture of shock and a little horror, as he waved his gun at her.
“Grab her.”
A scream caught in Laurie’s throat. She didn’t have time to think before a man standing between her and the gunman ran forward and grabbed her arm. He kicked the door shut, wrapping one thick hand around Laurie’s mouth. He twisted her arm and sparks floated across her vision. The man dragged her into the living room. Laurie’s eyes widened. The closer she got to that gleaming gun, the more she struggled.
The man with the gun stepped forward and pressed the cold metal of the barrel to her forehead.
Laurie gasped, stiffening. Her heart thundered in her chest. She barely breathed. She thought each breath would be her last, and she wondered if it hurt to die.
“Do not scream. Do not move or I will kill you.” He pressed the gun more firmly against her skin.
Laurie saw the coldness in his eyes. They were the color of granite, and just as unyielding. She looked down and away, standing perfectly still.
“What are you doing here? Who sent you?” His voice was like silk with underlying hints of gravel. Laurie said nothing, too terrified to speak.
“Answer him,” the man holding her instructed, twisting her arm.
She cried out in pain.
“I work for the resort.” Her voice squeaked and popped. “The head housekeeper told me you checked out. They said you left, and I had to clean the room for the next guest. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.”
Laurie’s breath came in gasps now. She felt lightheaded. She continued to look down, but a movement beside her caught her attention. Laurie glanced over to see another woman kneeling on the floor. The woman had long, blonde hair, like Laurie’s, but longer, stretching halfway to her waist. Bruises crisscrossed her delicate features. She had a bloodied lip and a cut along her cheek. Her hair was dirty, tousled. There was a rip in her dress above the shoulder and all along the hem. The woman turned her head, casting Laurie a look of deep fear and pity from her hazel eyes.
“Obviously I haven’t checked out. Why would they send you up here?” He leaned forward until he was nose to nose with her, his granite eyes flashing. “I think you’re lying.”
He pressed the gun into Laurie’s skull.
“No, please.” Laurie licked her dry lips and suppressed her urge to call for help. “They make mistakes sometimes. They have two new people at the front desk. They must have made a mistake and checked out the wrong room.”
There was a long pause.
“Please, I’m very sorry. I’m so, so sorry.” Laurie directed her words of apology at the woman she had locked eyes with.
“Help us,” the woman mouthed to Laurie.
Laurie blinked, not understanding. Then she noticed a thin arm circling the young woman’s waist, and two small hands clasped together. The child moved his head into view, resting it against the front of the woman’s waist to catch a glimpse of the new arrival. He was young, Laurie realized. Painfully young.
“I doubt you’re as sorry as you should be.” The man drew back, the unyielding presence of the gun receding. “Who knows you’re here?”
Laurie bit her lip, staring at the little boy in horror. The boy had bruises on his arm and his face. He stared up at Laurie with a vacant expression. Laurie felt like he was staring straight through her. His short blond hair was also unkempt, and he was so thin his tiny wrist bones looked like they would crack if Laurie so much as reached over to take his hand.
“Who knows you’re here?” The gun was back at her temple.
The man pulled the gun away and smacked Laurie hard across her cheek. Laurie cried out as pain exploded in her head. The man behind her grabbed her hair, jerking her face up to look at the man with the gun.
“I radioed that I was on my way up. So, um, my boss, the whole housekeeping staff, and security.” Laurie shivered as she lied, her heart racing. Her boss would know, perhaps some of the other housekeepers, but she hadn’t radioed anyone. Security wouldn’t have any idea where she was.
There was a pause as the man before her thought that over. Laurie could feel his eyes pouring over her face, looking for any signs of a lie.
“Should we take her with us, too?” asked the man holding her.
“We’ve got enough baggage, I think.” The man waved his gun in the direction of the woman and child. Laurie trembled with the unspoken threat…

That moment your life changes.
That moment that changes your life.
That moment you love someone more than you love yourself.
That was the moment we gave our son up for adoption and the moment I was left bare. A wide-open space that would forever be empty.
There are moments that define you as a person, moments that prove just how strong you are, moments you push yourself to keep going forward when all you really want to do is give up. It was in one of those moments when I reached out and found him waiting for me.
When Shelby Calder left home fifteen years ago, she never planned on returning to the Alaskan town she left behind. But after the death of her grandfather and a bitter divorce, she hopes going home will be a fresh start for her and her ten-year-old son.
Zach Watters has made a lot of mistakes in his life. But when he sees Shelby Calder, looking more beautiful than ever, standing outside her childhood home, he promises himself that letting her go won’t be a mistake he ever makes again.
Some things never change and love is one of them.

Excerpt
“Then why did you marry her?” I ask, wondering if I’m really ready to go there with him, but it’s too late to change my mind. The question is out, and as much as I don’t want to know the answer, I need to know the answer.
“I wanted my kids to have what I didn’t. I believed that, with time, we could find a way to be happy.”
“Maybe we shouldn’t talk about this,” I say, changing my mind as nausea and jealousy turn my stomach.
“You loved your ex, baby. I know you did. I didn’t have that. I wanted it but never had it with her or anyone else since you.”
“Please stop.” Feeling tears burn the back of my eyes for him, I close them tight. Max and I were happy and in love in the beginning, and I hate knowing Zach never had that… the kids didn’t see or feel that.
“I wish my past didn’t hurt you so much. I’m sorry for hurting you the way I have. If I could take your pain away, I would.” He gathers me against him and tucks my head under his chin.
“As sad as it makes me, I wish you would have had that with her or someone else,” I say, and his arms tighten so much that my lungs compress.
“I don’t,” he growls.
“What?” I wheeze, and he loosens his grip just enough for me to take a breath.
“I don’t want to think about what would have happened if I had been with her or someone else when you came back. I don’t want to face that demon inside of me that knows what I would have done.”
“Zach—”
“I’ve been in love with you for almost eighteen years. I carried your missing pieces around inside me for that long, Shelby. I know it would have made me an asshole, but there is only one you. You’re the only place I’ve ever called home.” His voice is thick with emotion, and that wound inside of me fills up a little bit more. I hate his words, but a part of me is relieved he feels that way, that he feels so deeply for me.
“There’s been a wide open space inside me since we placed Samuel and I left you behind. But, from the moment I came back, it’s slowly been filling up.”
He goes quiet at my words. Several moments pass before he speaks again. “One day, that space will be full. I swear, with everything I have in me, I will make sure it’s overflowing and that you never feel empty again.”

I was not dressed for a dinner at home.
My red-and-white gingham cotton dress was a 1950s silhouette, tight in the bodice, with an off-the-shoulder neckline and a full skirt. I hadn’t worn it in years and was honestly surprised it still fit. I clasped a demure choker of pearls around my neck and swept my hair up in a messy updo, with curly tendrils framing my face.
I was aiming for a touch of seduction. Maybe not a full, end-up-horizontal-in-bed seduction, because I didn’t think either one of us was quite ready for that yet.
Although I wouldn’t push him away, if that’s what he wanted.
I did want to look alluring enough to pique my husband’s interest—or, if possible, his memory. I tried on a pair of nude heels, but that was a little much for making stuffed pasta shells in my own kitchen, even for me. I slipped on pale pink ballet flats instead. I looked in the mirror and turned, sucking in my stomach. Not bad, considering everything. It was the first time I’d worn one of my vintage dresses in ages. Somehow, the retro-style didn’t seem to fit who I was anymore.
A wife. A mom. A woman with a complicated life. I shrugged at myself in the mirror. I’d deal with my wardrobe later. Or not. Because fashion no longer mattered.
My step was light as I left the master bedroom and walked into the living room.
Caleb was there—his family had collected Charlotte an hour earlier, saying they wanted us to have some “alone time”—sitting on the sofa. He looked simple and perfect, in a pair of dark-washed jeans and a black T-shirt.
He stood quickly and his mouth dropped open. “Oh! Wow.”
“You’re saying that a lot today,” I responded playfully. I didn’t want to let on that I was scared enough to throw up. It was as if we were on a first date, only during our first date, I’d been confident we’d end up in bed that evening. Tonight, I wasn’t sure what would unfold.
He stroked his chin. “Yeah. I am saying that a lot. Everything’s a surprise around here.”
I smiled, my first hurdle cleared. “Thanks.”
We stood and stared at each other, the silence between us filled with sexual static. Or so I thought. I wasn’t sure of anything anymore, truthfully. I didn’t know what to say, and he probably didn’t either. To him, I was a stranger in his house.

Through his teachings, Dash makes love to Amber’s mind and merges with her soul. Physically there’s only one problem, a secret that’s sacred. Amber St. James is a virgin…by choice.

Jagger Reed has a secret that could destroy lives…
And one life that could be destroyed is his disabled brother’s. Jagger is in jail for a crime he didn’t commit, and believes it’s a small price to pay to protect his family.
Rosalind McAllister is the newest creative writing teacher at Arizona State Prison…
Rose is determined to prove herself to her criminal students and not let them break her—like they did the last teacher. But when she meets Jagger Reed, she immediately knows the line between student and teacher could be easily blurred. Tall, intimidating, and way too handsome to be incarcerated, she vows to keep him at a distance.
A creative writing assignment turns into the discovery of Jagger’s innocence…
When Rose reads Jagger’s creative writing piece, she’s both astounded and impressed. His written words call to her, providing a window into his private world. But as the assignment continues, she discovers facts about Jagger’s conviction that change everything.
Determined to piece together clues that leap out from the pages, she finds much more than an articulate prisoner.
How can she save a man who doesn’t want to be saved? And can she stop her heart from getting involved while…
Defending Jagger?

Excerpt One:
Why him? Why not me? He didn’t ask to be born. None of us had a choice. I see the stares and the looks of pity from strangers. The subtle way eyes linger longer than necessary. Looking but not seeing. Judging. Laughing. It fucking pisses me off that they only notice what’s on the outside and not the mind of a genius or the heart of gold that resides within. Gentle and affectionate. He was born into the wrong body, that’s all. One that can’t communicate the same or function as well. But sit him in front of a piano and he’ll explode with talent, putting most musicians to shame. He owns those keys without any prompting or training of any kind. It’s sheer brilliance to watch. It’s almost like someone else takes over his body, the chords and harmonies perfectly placed and executed.
I wonder if he still gets to do that now. Things have changed. Guilt eats me up like acid. I shouldn’t have left but I had no choice. I’d do it all again. I protect the ones I love.

Excerpt Two:
I brought a shaky hand to my forehead to wipe the droplets of perspiration that had begun to fall with his incoming approach.
“You can’t be in here. The lesson is over. Please leave.” My voice was unconvincing, even to me.
“What’s the matter, sweetheart? I can see your heart battering against your chest under that flimsy blouse. Do I frighten you?” He was in my space. Too close.
Frighten wasn’t necessarily the verb I would have used. Unravel was more accurate.
“What did you say to the guard to get him to leave? Did you bribe him?”
My ass was backed into the edge of the desk. He towered over me, sheet of paper in hand.
“Bribe? Me? Why sweetness, what do you take me for?” His mouth was slightly parted, tongue loitering just inside. I wasn’t sure where to look. His eyes would kill me so I remained focused on his ridiculously sensual mouth, trying to mentally warn my hormones to back the hell off.
“You’re a criminal. I know your game. Bribes are rife everywhere.”
“Would you believe me if I told you I just wanted to hand you this without watchful eyes because it’s…kind of private?”
“Why should I believe anything you have to say?” Did I even verbalize that or was it in my head?
I couldn’t tell if I was up, down, sideways, or even still breathing. I must have been respiring because my nose caught a whiff of something decadent. I was a sucker for the just-showered smell and Jag had that. Hints of soap with subtle deodorant, mixed in with a fragrant shampoo. My senses were on overdrive, turning me into a disastrous puddle of desire.
Lowering his head to my ear, he inhaled before grating out, “Maybe not everyone’s guilty.”
His breath whispered over the delicate skin of my lobe, my eyes closing, hoping for some sort of contact. God. What was wrong with me? He was hunched over me, his heat, scent, and dangerous energy curling and swirling, luring me into a delirious vortex. My breath hitched, waiting on edge. And then he turned on his heels and strode out, not looking back, leaving me a puddle of wrongful desire.
I pictured his back and ass flexing and releasing as he left me with nothing but a gentle, lingering scent and lewd thoughts.
Taking a moment to compose myself, my eyes found the sheet of paper he had inconspicuously placed on the table beside me.
Excerpt Three:
Beautiful. Was that even a word meant to describe a man? A criminal? Ever since he’d confidently strolled into my classroom, I’d been searching for the right adjective. Catching indiscreet glances now that he was writing, painted a picture. Tall enough to be intimidating. Broad enough across the shoulders to provide protection. An intriguing face with both hard and soft lines. Clearly defined lips that seemed way too supple for their own good. An imperfect nose with a hint of a bump on the bridge that began where two of the most startling eyes I’d ever seen, sat.
They were neither blue nor green but somewhere in between, blended perfectly to create a unique masterpiece. Small black irises lent themselves to an abundance of arresting color that would take any artist great skill to replicate, should they care to paint his portrait.
Edgy and dangerous had no place in my world. And yet…the very masculine, gorgeous package I couldn’t keep my eyes off had certainly gained my attention. The words, ‘save him’ niggled at the edge of my psyche. While I wanted to save everyone, he stood out from the crowd. A low hum of desire flared up at the junction of my thighs, causing me to clench my legs. There was no way I was going to show my vulnerability and especially not my arousal. That would set off the whole classroom.

I am married and a mother of two beautiful children, living in sunny Queensland, Australia. I’ve been reading books ever since I can remember and love all things related to books. Writing has become an extension of that and I hope to pursue a full time writing career. I currently write part-time and work as a remedial massage therapist. I love spending time with family and hope to one day travel to Italy and England.
