Synopsis

As an Air Force medic, Bree Marks saw the worst the War on Terror had to dish out. Now a physical therapist, she uses her experience to help other veterans heal from their physical wounds; while she battles her own emotional damage.

Blaming himself for his best friend’s suicide, former Army Ranger Jase Larken, retreated from life. To honor his best friend’s memory and assuage his guilt, he started an outdoor adventure company to help veterans with PTSD.

Bree had better things to do than catch her cheating fiancé in bed with another woman. Jase is something better – for a night at least. For the first time in years, Jase wanted more. When he finds her again, he doesn’t give her another chance to run.

Jase’s possessiveness grates on Bree’s independent nature. She’s dealt with her fair share of alpha-male, door kickers and doesn’t need one telling her what to do now. But as a new danger emerges, Bree and Jase must face their pasts, before someone’s obsession with Bree destroys any chance they have of a future.

Excerpt

She left the restroom after drying her hands. Jase caught her in the hall leading back to the bar. He backed her against the wall and braced his forearms slightly above her head, caging her in but holding himself away from her. He leaned down and brushed his lips gently against hers, then stopped.
Was he asking permission? Bree grasped his hips and hooked her middle fingers in the belt loops of his jeans. She bit the corner of her lip.
“You’ve been biting your lip all night, Bree. It’s my turn.” Bree’s gaze darted from his mouth to his desire-filled eyes, just before his tongue laved the center of her bottom lip. She pulled her fingers out of Jase’s belt loops and stepped closer. She slid one arm around his back and the other around his head, her fingers threading through his hair. Jase wrapped his arms around her, bending at the knees and pulling her up onto her toes. He pushed her against the wall, fitting their bodies so close together Bree could feel the hard press of his cock against her abdomen. The kiss quickly turned carnal, tongues dancing together in an intimate tango as their breathing became heavy. Had she ever been kissed with that much heat…that much passion…that much desire?
The clearing of a throat broke the spell. Jase pulled away slowly, sucking on her bottom lip as he lifted his head. They stared at each other a moment before turning their heads to see Denise standing a couple of feet away trying to look anywhere but directly at them.
“Hey, sweetie.” Bree pushed at Jase trying to create some space between them. He was reluctant to let go, but he released the tight hold he had on her.
“Sorry to interrupt. Got a sec?”
“Sure.” Bree looked at Jase. “I’ll meet you back at the table?”
Jase stared, still holding the back of her neck. “Yeah.”
He bent down and gave her a quick, hard kiss before nodding to Denise and leaving them in the hall.
“Holy hell, that was hot and I wasn’t even the one being kissed,” Denise said. “I’m not sure if I should high-five you or hose you down.”
“No need. My underwear is already soaked.”

Olivia Gage is a top selling clean romance novelist, but wants to write
erotica. Jack Geary leads the lifestyle that Olivia wants to write about. They
start talking after a sarcastic written conversation over a review of a corset
that he made and a book she wrote.
Over time, they become friends and then he persuades her to spend a week with
him. He reasons with her that if she hasn’t experienced erotica first hand then
how is she going to write about it.
Charming Olivia is the week she spends with him, each night a different
subject, whips & ropes, threesomes, MM sex club and so on. He is determined
to talk her out of her clothes and into his bed. Olivia is determined that he

Over the year that he has been in contact with her, he has told her exactly

won’t succumb to his charms but she is not telling the full truth. Once Olivia
reveals what the truth is to Jack, she stands no chance.

Charming Olivia
Cecily was whisked from me immediately and was out of sight
in seconds. I wandered over to the make-shift bar and took a glass of white
wine. Walking over to the other side of the room, my heels clicking on the
wooden floor I took out my phone. I checked where Cecily had disappeared to and
opened my phone to see if Jack had sent me a message. He had.
Jack: How is the exhibition?
Me: We have just arrived. Cecily has already deserted me so
I’m wandering around the room checking out the other artists’ work. She has
warned me that I’m not allowed to use my phone when I’m here. I need to be wary
because she’s threatened to throw my phone out of the window and I know she
will. What are you doing?
Jack: I’m hard at work, socialising and selling knickers.
Me: Have you sold any yet?
Jack: No, but then I’m checking out the hot women that are
here. One of them has caught my eye, I can only see her back and I’m
telepathically willing her to turn around, but she is not complying. She looks
stunning and I want to grope her bottom.
Me: Why don’t you go and talk to her, wow her with your
witty charm. If she has stunning shoes then just tell her which company you own
and she will be yours for the night.
Jack: Would that work with you? What should I do to wow you?
Me: You know you can’t wow me. I’m not available to be
wowed.
Jack: I wish you were available. I still don’t understand
why you won’t meet me? I’ve offered to help you with your little problem. I
don’t see what the issue is?
My little problem. At times, I wished I hadn’t told him
about it. I was about to answer him when my phone was snatched from my hands. I
looked up to see Cecily’s back disappearing away, my phone in her hand. She was
walking towards the open window at the end of the room and I started to jog
after her. My tight dress and high heels were not aiding my efforts and I heard
someone chuckle as I passed them. Managing to catch up with her I tried to take
my phone back but she held it away from me.
“What did I say Olivia?” She asked with a huge grin on her
face.
“I was talking to Jack, you left me on my own, what was I
supposed to do?” I whined and pouted.
Cecily looked at my phone and grinned evilly at me and
started typing and then handed it back to me.
“That is your punishment for not staying by my side and for
entering me into this exhibition without my permission.” Cecily said and waited
for me to read what she’d sent.
Me: I’ve no real reason to keep turning down meeting you so
I will. Name the time and place and I’ll be there. Oh and check out my dress
this evening.
“Oh my God Cecily, why did you say that? Why did you send
the picture of me?”
“You have a problem and he has offered to fix it. You need
to do this, so I made the first step. You look hot and sending him a picture
will do no harm. You will thank me for it later, I promise. It’s no different
to what you did to get me here this evening.” She said and winked and walked
away.
I checked my phone to see if Jack had replied, he hadn’t. I
chewed on my thumbnail and waited for a long time, which in reality was two and
a half minutes.
Jack: Tomorrow, 9pm, Blue’s Bar on South Street, Edinburgh.
You look stunning.
Shit, double shit, how was I going to get out of this? I
stared at the screen silently cursing Cecily. Looking up to locate my so called
friend, I found her and glared at her from across the room.  Cecily didn’t
notice me throwing daggers at her, she looked perfectly fine on her own and she
didn’t need me here at all, which meant I didn’t need to be punished. I
couldn’t believe that she told him I would come and now he wanted me to meet
him tomorrow. I could drop everything and go tomorrow, but he didn’t know that.
Jack: Cold feet?
Me: I don’t know what came over me. I can’t arrive tomorrow,
I’ve a busy week next week.
Jack: Liar
Damn, that was the problem when you talked to someone every
day, they got to know your schedule.
Jack: What is the worst that can happen? Your husband can do
without you for a week, you have told me that he is not there next week, so get
on a plane and come and see me.
Me: You want me to come for a week?
Jack: When we discussed your little problem you gave me the
scenarios you wanted to see and we agreed it would take a week. We have talked
about this for months, we have even planned out how we’ll do it so why not now?
I’ll show you my lifestyle so that you can sort out that the problem of yours
and then you can go back to your ordinary life. I promise I won’t fuck you
unless you ask me to.
I gasped out loud, I don’t know why I did, his forwardness
shouldn’t shock me after this long but it did. I heard a man laugh from across
the room and I saw Cecily laughing with a client she was standing with. She
didn’t need me here, I wondered if I could slip away without her knowing.
Jack: Well?
Me: I’m not staying with you, I’ll book a hotel and you need
to keep your hands to yourself the entire time.
Jack: Deal. I’ll see your beautiful face tomorrow
sweetheart.
I sighed at my phone and put it away without answering. I
looked around the room to find Cecily to tell her what damage she’d done with
her comment and mentally made a list of what I needed to do to go to Edinburgh
tomorrow.

Alison Mello is a wife and stay at home mom to a wonderful little boy. She lives with her amazing family in Massachusetts.
She loves playing soccer, basketball and football with her son. After having her son, Alison started reading again and fell in love with Contemporary Romance.
Reading made her happy and gave her something to do when she had downtime.

As she started to read more, she started to noticed things she really enjoyed in a book and things she didn’t. She began to have ideas for writing one of her own. One day she literally woke up and started writing. She realized that if there was ever a time for her to write, it was now. She had a part time job to give her something to do.
The hours at work were slow and she was bored with what she was doing, so while her son was off enjoying his friends over summer vacation she got started.
Alison finished the first book in two weeks and decided that she really enjoyed writing, so she kept going. She already had ideas in mind for books two and three, so she kept writing.
That is how the Learning to Love Series was born. Somewhere along the line, one of my Beta readers convinced me that Michael, a character from Finding Love, needed his own story.
That is when Alison added the fourth and final book. Alison hopes you enjoy her books as much as she enjoyed writing them.

Enter
Joseph Hopkins Fallon’s meddling father, after meeting Justin he decides the
boy may just be the thing to get his daughter out of the farm house and into
the real world. Enlisting the aid of his youngest son Peter they force the pair
to interact even after a disastrous first meeting.
The pair
quickly find they have less to fight about and more to fight for, when the
brothers try to keep them apart. Can they conquer the bonds of family or will
it all just be Stolen Moments?

Dreams And Screams Bookaholics EXCERPT
I’m standing the kitchen pulling out eggs, sausage and thinking about pancakes when I hear Justin say my name.
Yelling back, I let him know I’m in the kitchen and wait for him to join me. I know as soon as he is close because the air shifts.
“So… What’s going on? Where is everyone?” Justin asks.
“Seems as if they decided to go fishing and I’m to train you on all the stuff I do. Which is pretty much freaking everything. For now, I need to know what you’d like to eat so I can get us fed before we spend the next five hours sweating to death.” I’m being snippy.
“Oh wow! So they just abandoned you with me. As far as food I’m a man I’ll eat anything. So just butter us some toast and make some coffee.” Justin says and I look at him as if he has an eyeball in the middle fo his forehead.
“Well… Umm… I kind of enjoy food, so what we have will depend on what you want. I can make just about anything. Give me an idea and I will get us fed.” I say turning the coffee pot on. He sighs and hip bumps me out of the way. “You go start the coffee and I will make you breakfast. And don’t bother arguing with me. You’ve got the place to yourself, so why don’t you sit back and let someone take care of you for a change.”
“Technically I don’t have the place to myself, because you are here with me. I happen to enjoy taking care of my family. Been doing it since I was seven. What makes you think I’d stop now?”
“Then it’s certainly about time don’t you think?”
He’s freaking challenging me.
“So tell me what you want or I’m going to cook everything in front of me.”
“If you cook everything in front of you it has to all be ate or you won’t get any lunch today. If you’d like to cook, then fine. I can get the house cleaned as you are cooking. My day is just beginning.”
“So then tell me what you want little lady.” He smirks.
“Surprise me.” I say before walking out of the room.
***
After walking away from Justin I go upstairs and knock it out first since that’s where Pete sleeps. His room is always the worst. It doesn’t take too long; I do this every day. I finally get all the dirty clothes in a basket to take down with me and start the wash when I hear Justin yell up the stairs for me. Lord this seems so surreal. I’ve never just been left alone with one of the workers like this. Daddy must really trust him. Basket in tow I make my way down the stairs. Hitting the last step, I hear him call for me again. Only this time I slip. Jesus what is it about him that keeps making me fall on my ass?
Justin comes strolling out of the dining room and sees me on the floor with a pair of freaking boxers on my head. Could this be any more embarrassing? Wait, why do I care?
He stands there looking at me his hand over his mouth and his eye brows knitted and I can tell by the way his shoulders shake that he’s hiding the widest smile imaginable. He reaches out snatching the boxers from my head and tossing them in the clothes basket.
“These do not look good on you.” He offered me his hand.
“Yea well, had someone not yelled for me as I hit the bottom step and about given me a heart attack I wouldn’t have been on my ass.” I give him a pointed look from my floored positon.
“Come on just leave it. I’ll help you
pick it up afterward. The food is getting cold, let’s go.” Keeping my hand in
his he pulls me up and along behind him.
Coming to a stop at the table he tells me to sit. Then disappears behind the door.
“Excuse me?” I shout. Walking back in he’s carrying tray with coffee, cups and all the fixin’s.
“I’m sorry milady, please sit and relax. I’ve got this under control.” He smirks and disappears once more.
“Just so you know I really don’t like being told what to do.” I sass and he walks in with two full plates. Sitting one in front of me and one across from me.
“Okay miss sassy pants, that’s enough out of you. Now eat!” I swear I’m going to smack the smirk off his face.
“My God think you cooked enough?”
Checking out everything on my plate. I see waffles, eggs, and sausage, and he even managed to sneak in a pile of home fries. Both plates are piled high. He catches me looking back and forth between our plates and lets out a chuckle.
“You said surprise you. So Surprise.”
“Is all this actually editable?” I smart.
“You wound me. Just eat.” I smile at him as I push out of my chair
to stand. “I’m going to get Orange Juice. Would you like any?”
“Damnit I knew I forgot something.”
“Don’t worry not everyone can be prefect.” Walking into the kitchen, expecting to see a mess I stop halfway through the door. Everything is spotless. Letting out a little whimper I make myself move along and hope Justin didn’t hear it.
***
Leaning over the counter with hands on my face. I have to take a few moments to myself before walking back out there where the man sits that may just be my equal. I’m not sure I’m quite ready for that yet. I still have lots to take care of. Don’t really need to add another person right now.
I jerk up when I feel a hand on my shoulder. My eyes go wide as saucers as he looks down at me.
“Did you get lost, honey?” He opens the fridge and grabs the orange juice.
As he nudges by me, his hand brushes my belly and I have a quick intake of air. Which catches his attention. I’ve yet to actually speak to him. My head is telling me speak but my mouth isn’t moving. He stands in the fridge for a moment with a slight tilt to his head and low chuckle. He knows what he just did to me. I can almost hear him lick his lips as he closes the door and turns to me.
He tilts my head up with his finger. My eyes look straight into his light brown ones. I could sit and stare at them all day.
“Where do you keep the glasses.”
Did he seriously just ask me that?
“They are in the cabinet above the sink, second shelf up.” I say pointing “You only need one. I have to… Uh. I have go somewhere. Have a good breakfast.” Pushing off the counter I move quickly for the door. I’m just as quickly stopped by hand on my wrist.
“Whoa wait a minute. Did I do something wrong? I thought you were supposed to train me today.” Justin says sounding very confused. I refuse to look at him because I am unsure as to how I may react.
“Um… Yea I am… Uh I just… I’m not feeling very well all of a sudden.”
“Fallon, seriously? What’s going on? You were fine less than five minutes ago and I know it wasn’t my food because you haven’t eaten any of it.”
My belly does flips and my legs turn to jelly as he says my name. I’ve got to get out of here. NOW!
“Fallon, talk to me, you’ll find I’m a pretty handy guy to have around, if you need an ear.” He pushes a stray hairbehind my ear. My jelly legs completely give out and I fall into his arms.

Excerpt

Tomorrow comes awfully fast and the day flies by. Maybe it’s because I’m not exactly thrilled about watching people have sex all by myself. It makes me wonder what kind of things people ask to see when they have requests. All I can say is that I feel like a creeper.

Chris walks into my office and stops when he gets a good look at my face. “Whoa, why are you so red?”

Glancing at the clock, I sigh. “Because in a couple of hours, I have to watch three people have sex in the viewing room.” He knows that I’m doing my own investigative work, but I never told him exactly what I’m doing until now.

He bursts out laughing. “Are you serious? What if it’s not the guy you’re looking for?”

I shrug. “Then I guess I’ll be watching these people have sex.”

“This is classic. I was going to ask you to go to dinner with me, but you’ll be too busy.”

I roll my eyes. “Ha-ha. I’d much rather be getting some dinner. I think I’m just going to stay here until it’s time to go.”

He tries to hide his smile and fails. “Have fun with that. You’ll have to let me know how it went in the morning.” He chuckles the entire time he walks to his office and then out the front door. I’ll never be able to escape him now; he’ll make fun of me for the rest of our lives.

Once everyone leaves, I eat the rest of my turkey sandwich I had left over from lunch while I look over my notes on Chad Bates. Jennifer never texted to tell me if he was going to be at the club or not, so I guess I’ll just have to find out when I get there. I wonder if Hunter’s ever done something like that … had sex with two girls on stage in front of an audience. That’s one of the reasons why I can never get serious about him. How can I when he does that for a living?

My time is running out so I close up the office and head to the club. The parking lot is packed, but I slip on my necklace and get out of the car. I try to ignore the evil looks from everyone standing in line as I walk up to the door. Luckily, Jared is right inside, dressed in his tux and his dark hair perfectly coifed.

“Good evening,” he says, taking my purse. It’s going to be hard to pin anything on Chad without physical proof. Maybe I can try to sneak in a hidden camera next time. Jared nods for me to follow him and we go through the door that leads to the sex rooms. Placing his hand on the doorknob, he smiles at me. “You ready?”

            I laugh. “I hope so.”

We walk inside and he points to the purple, velvet couch. It’s the same place my co-workers sat when Hunter and I were on stage. “All you have to do is sit here and watch the show. If for some reason you have to leave, just press that blue button,” he says, pointing to it on the wall. “That way, I’ll know to come in and get you.”

I nod. “Thanks. I think I got it.”

He starts toward the door. “Enjoy the show.”

The Hotter the Love by Lea Bronsen

Series: Hot Model Mine #3

After sexy cover model Yushka proposed, life is more turbulent than ever for erotic romance author Andrea. He is expecting a baby with his ex-girlfriend, who says she doesn’t want to keep it. How will Andrea’s sons take upcoming life changes? To make things more complicated, her ex goes to great lengths to coax her back, and one of her sons’ girlfriend is a tad too interested in Andrea’s young and very handsome fiancé…

On the writing front, Andrea anxiously awaits news on her latest manuscript submission, and she has to decide whether to accept her publisher’s offer to model in a sexy photo shoot—the same kind she and Yushka did in Cannes—in the hopes of making a new “Cover Photo of the Year”. Considering the erotic poses the previous photographer demanded, can Andrea model with another guy other than Yushka?

Excerpt:

We enter a hall so big the tiniest sound echoes. It’s quite humbling. I shrink in my clothes and barely dare to breathe. Dark wood furniture towers over us, with a mix of contradictory smells—orchid-scented sanitizer and old dust—filling the space.

Shoes clamping on a hardwood floor, we follow the tall, silver-haired man into a living room with exquisite furniture, gold-framed mirrors, and classic paintings on the walls. Heavy velvet curtains adorn the windows, and an impressive floor-to-ceiling library on one side has to contain literary curiosities from every part of the world. Marveling, I study each magnificent object.

The man stops and glares across the room, his facial expression clearly one of annoyance. What an oppressive atmosphere.

Yushka stands beside him and stares in the same direction.

I follow their gaze. A young and strikingly beautiful woman is half-seated on a green velvet couch with her legs folded underneath her. Dark doe eyes and pink lips stand out in a pale, oval face. A waterfall of rich, glowing auburn-colored hair contrasts with her white dress. She looks cast in a scene from the Russian classic Doctor Zhivago. Beneath full breasts, a pregnant belly protrudes, far too round and big for her frail frame. Jekaterina?

My chest tightens. The more I look at her, the more her beauty takes my breath away. She’s the woman Yushka was in love with last year. The one he slept with and impregnated.

Her gaze is riveted on him, the recognition and warmth fiery.

I shoot him a glance. His features are tight, as if he’s trying to hide his reaction, but he doesn’t take his gaze off her. This is exactly what I feared. They’ve had feelings for each other. Maybe meeting now will revive them. He has fallen for her once, so why would he not fall for her again?

I feel bad, nauseous, want to get out of here. But she’s carrying the baby girl I’m going to call mine very soon. I need to overcome my unease. Hopefully, once the formalities are done, this is the only time we’ll have to meet.

She tells him a few words in Russian, her voice the cooing of a turtledove.

Yushka replies calmly, but his throat sounds choked. He grabs my hand, palm sweaty, and leads me to a sofa opposite hers. His discomfort is more than clear in his features. He tears his gaze from her and searches me, his expression vibrating with an intensity I seldom see. It hits me—he’s afraid.

I squeeze his hand. “Is everything okay?”

“Yes,” he replies instantly, but his tension is palpable.

My chest tightens to a painful level. What is he so nervous about? From his interaction with Jekaterina, this has nothing to do with the baby. It’s about them, their relationship, and me. Is he afraid he’ll have to choose between us?

Goodness, I’m delirious. I sit very still, take small, shallow breaths, and pray for everything to be all right. Then bolt out of this house after the arrangements are resolved.

Jekaterina addresses me, her dark pupils glimmering. “You’re very beautiful. Are you a model, too?”

I’m as taken aback by her speaking a fluent English as I am by her compliment, and need a few seconds to shake myself. “Um, no, I’m not.”

She raises a brow. “That’s funny. I would’ve sworn you were a model. So how did you two meet?”

“At an author conference.”

Yushka clears his throat. “Andrea writes books, and I’m featured on the cover of her last one.”

“Oh, how exciting.” Her lips curve upward. I can’t decide whether it’s a genuine smile or she’s faking it.

“Yes,” he continues. “That’s why we … uh … were bound to meet. They had organized a Meet-and-Greet for authors and cover models of their books.” Why does he sound like he’s trying to make an excuse?

She flutters her long lashes at me. “What kind of books do you write?”

Before I can answer, her father walks over to a cabinet and picks up a bunch of papers. “All right, enough chit-chat.” His voice booms like thunder.

From the New York Times Bestselling Author of The Resistance comes this new STANDALONE contemporary romance.

Because first love deserves a second chance

One month.

One movie.

One shot at a second chance.

I fell madly in love at first sight with Jane Lewis.

The girl with bright green eyes, a pretty smile, and great ass owned my heart. I thought she was happy with the status quo, but ten years later, I foolishly let her go. Despite dating other women, no one compares to my first love. We are meant to be together, and I’m going to try my damnedest to convince her of that.

Luke Anders tricked me. The deal was sealed before I knew he was behind it.

We agreed to be just friends. Simple. Easy. But it’s not just the weather that’s hot in Texas. I was a fool to think I could resist him. He knows how to work his charms and those kissable lips, that great jaw, and biceps. We are here to work, but he has become downright distracting.

I’m strong. I can handle one month of his flirtatious sexual torture. But if I happen to fall in bed with that sexy bastard for a night, or three, does that make me weak? Asking for a friend, of course.

I guess I’m about to find out when love gets messy, it’s not just the talk that’s dirty.

**BONUS BOOK EDITION of Dirty Talk includes the full novel of Sweet Talk. “Sweet Talk is a fun, sexy, emotionally-rich second chance romance with a charm-your-panties-off hero.” ~ New York Times Bestselling Author, Violet Duke

Excerpt

~Jane Lewis~

The panic subsides and then reality hits me.

Luke Anders is right next door to me. For a month.

I’ve only been here for a minute or so and I’m sweltering. The air hasn’t cooled me off so I pull my shirt away from my sticky skin. A knock on the window makes me jump; my hand instantly covers my heart.

Luke steps away from the car with his hands up in surrender. He mouths, “Sorry.”

Shaking my head, I take another quick breath to calm myself, and push the button that slides the window down.

“Sorry about that. I didn’t realize I was sneaking up on you.”

“It’s okay,” I reassure him, my heart racing—from his close proximity or from being startled I’m not quite sure.

When I open the door, he opens it wider and I get out. I can’t help but take him in, my breath escaping me just like the first time I ever saw him. He’s stunningly handsome, maybe even more so. Definitely more so. One month without seeing him and now he’s trying to kill me. His rugged good looks, the T-shirt stretching across his broad, hard body, and a week’s worth of beard growth makes me want to rub my fingers and other things on it to see if it’s rough or soft.

In a word?

Damn. Hot.

Fine, two words, but he’s worth breaking the rules for.

And just like that, all my better senses fly out the window. “Have you been working out?” I regret saying it the second I do. I regret it doubly when that cocky smirk that made me fall in love with him appears, transforming his entire attitude.

He pops a bicep for me, and replies, “I’ve gotten in a little gym time recently.”

“Well, it shows.” Shut up, Jane. I wave my hand in the air, unable to control myself. “I’ve got a VIP ticket to the gun show. Any idea where I might redeem it?” What the hell am I doing? He drives me nuts and I fall for it every time.

Luke laughs. Pretending to take the imaginary ticket, he stashes it in his back pocket. One arm goes out and then the other. “Bam. Bam! Check these babies out.”

Now I’m a giggling mess. Running my hand over one then the other, I smile. “It was worth every dime I spent on that ticket.” I squeeze his muscle.

He laughs and drops his arm. “And how many dimes did you spend?”

“Ten shiny dimes for each.” I walk around to the back of the car and open my trunk.

Luke chuckles even harder. “Glad you got your money’s worth then.” He comes around and grabs the large suitcase out, setting it on the sidewalk and pulling up the handle.

I reach in the backseat and pull out the last box, but he moves in and grabs it for me. “Take the suitcase. I’ll carry this for you.”

Rolling the suitcase behind me, we walk along the sidewalk back to the hotel as if we’re friends, as if we haven’t hurt each other’s hearts. I ask, “What were you doing out here?”

“Getting coffee. I heard Jo’s is great. It’s next to the hotel.”

“I could use one. The drive was exhausting.”

He walks one step to the side and behind me. “Why did you drive?”

“I wanted to have a car.” I hate lying, especially to him, but I’m not ready for him to know I don’t have a place to call home anymore or a place to store my car in LA for a month. I’ll have to face the fact of my reality once this film wraps, so I choose to hide my eyes and stick with the white lie.

A silence pervades the journey as we walk through the courtyard. I stop in front of my door. Looking to his, I wonder if he realizes the relation of the two. Turning back to him, his smile is much nicer, more the sweet boy I once knew. I still struggle with what to say, so I awkwardly shift, and signal to the door behind me. “This is me.” I unlock the door, and step inside.

“Right next door.” He follows me inside. After setting the box down on the table, he looks around the room. “Just like mine. It’s nice we’ll be neighbors.”

“Quite the coincidence.”

“Maybe. Maybe not.”

“Maybe not?”

“Could be fate, Janie.”

“You never believed in fate.” I sit on the bed just as some of the old feelings come swirling back in the quiet of the room.

“I believe in destiny these days.”

s.l. scott

New York Times and USA Bestselling Author, S. L. Scott, was always interested in the arts. She grew up painting, writing poetry and short stories, and willing her days away lost in a good book and the movies.

With a degree in Journalism, she continued her love of the written word by reading American authors like Salinger and Fitzgerald. She was intrigued by their flawed characters living in picture perfect worlds, but could still debate that the world those characters lived in were actually the flawed ones. This dynamic of leaving the reader invested in the words, inspired Scott to start writing with emotion while interjecting an underlying passion into her own stories.

Living in the capital of Texas with her family, Scott loves traveling and avocados, beaches, and cooking with her kids. She’s obsessed with epic romances and loves a good plot twist. She dreams of seeing one of her own books made into a movie one day as well as returning to Europe. Her favorite color is blue, but she likens it more toward the sky than the emotion. Her home is filled with the welcoming symbol of the pineapple and finds surfing a challenge though she likes to think she’s a pro.

That moment your life changes.

That moment that changes your life.

That moment you love someone more than you love yourself.

That was the moment we gave our son up for adoption and the moment I was left bare. A wide-open space that would forever be empty.

There are moments that define you as a person, moments that prove just how strong you are, moments you push yourself to keep going forward when all you really want to do is give up. It was in one of those moments when I reached out and found him waiting for me.

When Shelby Calder left home fifteen years ago, she never planned on returning to the Alaskan town she left behind. But after the death of her grandfather and a bitter divorce, she hopes going home will be a fresh start for her and her ten-year-old son.

Zach Watters has made a lot of mistakes in his life. But when he sees Shelby Calder, looking more beautiful than ever, standing outside her childhood home, he promises himself that letting her go won’t be a mistake he ever makes again.

Some things never change and love is one of them.

Excerpt

“Then why did you marry her?” I ask, wondering if I’m really ready to go there with him, but it’s too late to change my mind. The question is out, and as much as I don’t want to know the answer, I need to know the answer.

“I wanted my kids to have what I didn’t. I believed that, with time, we could find a way to be happy.”

“Maybe we shouldn’t talk about this,” I say, changing my mind as nausea and jealousy turn my stomach.

“You loved your ex, baby. I know you did. I didn’t have that. I wanted it but never had it with her or anyone else since you.”

“Please stop.” Feeling tears burn the back of my eyes for him, I close them tight. Max and I were happy and in love in the beginning, and I hate knowing Zach never had that… the kids didn’t see or feel that.

“I wish my past didn’t hurt you so much. I’m sorry for hurting you the way I have. If I could take your pain away, I would.” He gathers me against him and tucks my head under his chin.

“As sad as it makes me, I wish you would have had that with her or someone else,” I say, and his arms tighten so much that my lungs compress.

“I don’t,” he growls.

“What?” I wheeze, and he loosens his grip just enough for me to take a breath.

“I don’t want to think about what would have happened if I had been with her or someone else when you came back. I don’t want to face that demon inside of me that knows what I would have done.”

“Zach—”

“I’ve been in love with you for almost eighteen years. I carried your missing pieces around inside me for that long, Shelby. I know it would have made me an asshole, but there is only one you. You’re the only place I’ve ever called home.” His voice is thick with emotion, and that wound inside of me fills up a little bit more. I hate his words, but a part of me is relieved he feels that way, that he feels so deeply for me.

“There’s been a wide open space inside me since we placed Samuel and I left you behind. But, from the moment I came back, it’s slowly been filling up.”

He goes quiet at my words. Several moments pass before he speaks again. “One day, that space will be full. I swear, with everything I have in me, I will make sure it’s overflowing and that you never feel empty again.”

Through the haze of her apple martinis, Ella spotted someone across the wide dining room. He was different from the other patrons there to celebrate the restaurant’s two-year anniversary. With an arrogant walk, he strutted across the stone floor. Lean, muscular, and blessed with one of those bodies women would always notice, he had dark blond hair and disquieting dark green eyes. He was the kind of guy who knew he was good-looking and let everyone else know it, too. She wasn’t usually attracted to that type, but this man—his confidence intrigued her.
“You’re Ella, Ella Winston,” he said in a voice like dark chocolate fondue: deep, and wickedly sexy.
“Yeah.” She almost dropped her drink. “I’m the sous chef.”
“I know. Marcus told me.”
As his smile sank to the depths of her belly, he extended his hand, but Ella ignored it.
Don’t touch him. You know what happens when you touch them.
“So, how do you know Marcus?” Ella quickly asked, hoping to make up for her rudeness.
He laughed, looking her over. Above the din in the room, she could sense something different about his laugh. Unlike the insincere chortle of others, this man’s laugh got to her. She was having an unusual physical reaction, something that never happened to her. When most men laughed, Ella usually ran away.
“Marcus and I share the same friends.”
“What friends are those?” she asked, craving another martini.
“The wealthy kind, who like to support the arts.” He raised a green bottle of sparkling water in his hand. “I’m a painter. Marcus and I know a lot of people who like to pretend they’re patrons and keep us gainfully employed.”
“Painter?” Ella shrugged, finding it hard to believe Marcus knew any painters. “What do you paint?”
“Portraits of women. Usually with very little clothing.”
Oh yeah, I need another drink. “Is that lucrative?”
“For me it is.”
Her eyes wandered around the dining room, desperate to find a rescue. Ella needed to get away from this man before she said or did something really stupid.
“Do you like art?” he pressed.
“Some art. I think it would depend on the passion I see in a painting.”
“The passion in a painting?” That laugh again. Her toes tingled. Not good. “You sound like a painter, Ms. Winston.”
The martini glass in her hand suddenly weighed a ton. “Isn’t painting a passion for an artist, like cooking is a passion for a chef? Having a passion is a healthy thing. It reminds us that we have a soul.”
He nodded, seemingly approving of her drunken ramblings. “That’s very profound and also very true. I think you have a lot of talents yet to be discovered, Ella. May I call you Ella?”
“Ah, sure. Ella is fine.” Her mouth went dry. “What makes you think I have any talents outside of cooking?”
“I have a sense for these things.”
She tensed. Can he tell? The same thought always haunted her when she met new people. Ella fought so hard to keep her secret under control. Time to make a run for it.
“Don’t let Marcus know I have other talents. He’ll probably fire me.”
She was about to depart when he stopped her. He leaned in, and she could just make out the small cleft in his pointy chin. “I promise, if you ever need a job, I’ll hire you.”
His mouth was so close she could have kissed his perfect, thin lips. Frightened by the notion, Ella backed away. “I’ll hold you to that.”
“I hope you do, Ella.”
She should have done a million different things: asked his name, gotten his phone number, or stayed to flirt with him some more. Instead, Ella walked away. She figured it was one of those moments in life she would live to regret. Fortunately, Ella found the bar and drowned her disappointment in another apple martini.
Ella reasoned that was the way of it. You meet people and move on, and one day, if you’re lucky, you meet the interesting ones again.
