Synopsis

“There’s never been a time I’ve cared about anything more than my club. Today that all changed. Today I got you.”

To truly understand a story; you need to start from the beginning, but to start from the beginning; you have to go back, further than just you. After all, our stories don’t start with us, do they? Our stories start with the person before us, and the person before them. We are created from the stories of those people – from their mistakes, from their achievements, from their love and their hate.

No one’s story is ever truly their own.

I tried to create my own story, my own path, and my own actions. I’ve seen things people only see in their worst nightmares, but I never let it beat me down. I never let it become who I was. I picked myself up, and I kept going. Everything was what it was.

There was no point analyzing what it could be.

Could be’s didn’t matter.

Until Maddox came into the picture. He saved my life. He changed my world; giving me the second chance some of us only dream about. There was only one thing missing in my second chance, and she was the reason I fought so hard to survive.

My sister.

My sister who is supposed to be dead, well, at least, that’s what I thought.

That’s what he told me.

Now is where my story changes, but to understand this story, you have to start at the beginning…where it all began…and before.

This story is the second book in a series. You can get the first book on all major retailers. (Precarious – Jokers’ Wrath MC Book 1)

Love……………………The Ultimate Loss of Control

Rain and Raven Medici are identical twins. Although they come from a loving close-knit family their childhoods couldn’t have been more different. Raven went to school and was exposed freely to the outside world. Rain on the other hand was born with a blood disorder and denied many normal childhood experiences.

Once grown, Raven becomes a lawyer at their dad’s firm Kane & Medici in NYC. Rain along with her only childhood friend Tommy Conte, builds a very successful business as professional photographers. Traveling between Europe and Manhattan, and enjoying a world that was kept from her, Rain vows never to be controlled again.

thing he has ever failed at. A relationship with his father Vincent Kane. Upon his father’s death, Dominick vows revenge. The events he sets in motion put him on a
collision course he himself will be unable to control.

In a bizarre twist of fate, Dominick kidnaps Raven as part of his plan for revenge. Only to discover afterward, he has taken Rain by mistake. Rain knows she can never survive being confined again. So she strikes a bargain with the devil and agrees to help Dominick get back what he feels rightly belongs to him. His father’s share of Kane & Medici.

Dominick decides to use the strong attraction growing between Rain and himself to control her in every way imaginable. Too bad no one ever taught Dominick you can’t control the heart. Nothing could have prepared him for the effect Rain would have on his.

Will this plan of revenge turn into unconditional love? Or will Dominick and Rain’s need for control ultimately destroy them and any possible chance for a real future
together……

As far back as I can remember, I’ve loved books. I love reading them and finally, I’ve admitted to myself that I love to write them.

Since the day I started to write Rain and Dominick’s story, I’ve never looked back, nor do I regret one single moment of it.

When I write, much of the time the story plays in my head as a movie and sometimes even includes background music. We can all use a little background music.

I try to add elements of things I love. And share them with the readers. I’ll continue to create characters and stories that you can laugh, cry, love, hate and even become slightly crazy about.

Let’s face it, we can all use some crazy every now and then.

Merciless Ride

Mercy is no friend of mine. Karma, she has yet to show kindness to me.

The hits just keep on coming for Tessie Marie Harlow. She has never had an easy life. Her mom disabled, her dad long gone, and a single mom raising a rambunctious little boy, that’s Tessie’s world.

Her childhood aspirations to be a nurse long since disappeared after a college spring fling both blessed and cursed her with a baby boy. Dropping out of school, she returns to her hometown and begins to settle in. Getting the only job she could as a bartender she spends her days caring for her son and nights serving the Hellions Motorcycle Club and their affiliates.

Tired of waiting for Rex to grow up she’s faced with the bane existence of her life until one night changes everything. In the darkest hour of her merciless ride through life, she’s saved by a quiet, laid back Hellion.

Andy ‘Shooter’ Jenkins has always been around. Too wrapped in Rex she’s never really noticed him before. He has never been loud or known to have the girls hanging all over him. He is a mystery. A chance encounter brings him to her rescue not once but twice.

The Desert Ghosts Motorcycle Club are in town and bring their own brand of chaos right to Tessie’s door. Forced into her day to day life, Shooter is doing everything he can to shelter and protect her as lines are crossed and a war between two clubs begins.

Secrets revealed putting two brothers in the Hellions Motorcycle Club at a serious crossroads in their lives.

This is not a ride for pleasure. This is not a ride for safety. This is not a ride for love. This is a ride for survival. Mercy has never once shined her grace down for these two, but in the midst of the danger and lies can they learn to rely on one another and ride it out together?

This book contains strong language, strong sexual situations, violence and is not suitable for readers under the age of 18. Please do not buy if any of this offends you. This is a work of fiction and is not meant to be a true or exact depiction of a motorcycle club but rather a book meant to entertain.

Shooter

“Shooter, again, I can’t take your car.”

“Look, your car, we gotta order parts, I told you that already. Those take a few days to get in. I can’t leave you with no way to get to Axel, your mom, and to work.”

“I’ll rent a car,” she replies firmly.

“Tessie, don’t be stubborn. We don’t even know what your car will cost to repair. Take the Challenger.”

“Why are you so willing to help me?” Tessie asks me.

“Call me selfish. If you don’t have a car, you can’t get to work, and then who would serve me a beer?” I ask in mock innocence.

“Corinne will happily serve you, Shooter.”

“Ha. Got jokes do ya? Corinne will happily serve up more than just drinks. Tessie, I’m just tryin’ to be a friend here.”

“I would hardly call us friends.” Her face set in stone, not giving anything away. She’s tough, but there is a sadness deep in those brown eyes that pulls at me.

“We could be,” I state watching for her to give me some sort of clue or opening. Yet, she gives away nothing. “Take the car, Tessie.”

“I don’t need any new friends, Shooter. Keep your car. Thanks for stopping by. I’ll get my car sorted. I’m no trouble of yours.”

“Come on, Tessie. Look, I get it, you haven’t had it easy. Neither have I, but I have an opportunity to help you and I want to take it. No strings, no favors, no debts, no markers, just me paying it forward so to speak.”

When she doesn’t reply or change her stance, I throw out the big guns so to speak. “Okay, I’ll call Rex and have him arrange for your transportation.” I begin to step backwards, making my exit.

“Wait! You wouldn’t really involve Rex would you?”

“If you don’t take the car, yes, I will. Tessie, you’re part of the Hellions family in a way. None of us want to see you struggle. Take the car.”

“You won’t call Rex if I take the car?” She questions as I watch the determination flash in her face. For whatever reason she does not want to rely on my brother.

“If you take the car and agree to have dinner with me,” I add totally knowing I’m pushing my luck here.

“Shooter!” She cries out in frustration, losing some of her firm resolve to keep me shut out.

“What? I want us to be friends, that’s all. Seriously, I’m a man with far too much bad history to bring a woman along for my ride. I want to get to know you as a friend. I get the feeling you could use a friend right now and just that.”

“I’ll take the car, but only until my car is fixed. Things are complicated for me. I can’t accept your dinner invitation. To be honest, it’s not in your best interest to be my friend.”

My buddy, Nathan ‘Boomer’ Vaughn pulls into Tessie’s driveway. Handing her the keys to the Challenger, I smile.

“Baby, I’ve never been one to do anything that’s in my best interest. We’ll have dinner one night, Tessie. Mark my words.” At that final statement, I walk away.

Chelsea Camaron was born and raised in Coastal North Carolina. She currently resides in Southern Louisiana with her husband and two children but her heart is always Carolina day dreaming.

Chelsea always wanted to be a writer, but like most of us, let fear of the unknown grab a hold of her dream; she realized that if she was going to tell her daughter to go for her dreams, that it was time to follow her own advice.

Chelsea grew up turning wrenches alongside her father, and from that grew her love for old muscle cars and Harley Davidson motorcycles, which just so happened to inspired her ‘Daddy’s Girls’ series. Her love for reading has sparked a new love for writing and she currently has a few more projects in the works.

When she is not spending her days writing you can find her playing with her kids, attending car shows, going on motorcycle rides on the back of her husband’s Harley, snuggling down with her new favorite book or watching any movie that Vin Diesel might happen to be in.

She hates being serious and is still a big kid at heart. She is a small town country girl enjoying life and, Chelsea hopes that her readers remember not to take life too seriously and to embrace your inner five year old, because five year olds know how to enjoy the simple things in life and how to always have fun.

Derek Bast, always has the final say. In business and in his personal life, things are done his way, or not at all. So when a scathing review of his new band is published in The Scene and has his record producer second guessing his artistic choices, his band mate trying to call the shots, and Bast’s manager convinced he’s impossible to work with, it’s time to hunt down the source of his problems: Bess Halprin, reviewer for The Scene, the girl next door growing up, and his ex-best friend since senior year when she decided to hate him for no reason.

The last person Bess Halprin wants to see standing in the lobby of The Scene is Derek Bast. Unfortunately, she can’t deny that the last nine years look damn good on him. She expected to hate him. She didn’t expect the way he can still tug at her emotions, or the way his kiss—and his hands—set her on fire. Bess should’ve kept her distance, because Bast was right when he guessed her review was written for revenge. The problem is, to this day he has no idea what he did—how he screwed her over their senior year. The bigger problem? She’s giving him the opportunity to do it again, because she never could resist him.

When circumstances bring them both home to Santa Cruz, Bast earns his way into the heart of the girl next door, but when they return to L.A. and real life rushes in, will he be able to keep her this time or are the mistakes in their past destined to be repeated?

When I first started this one I really didn’t think it was going to be one that really grab me, boy was I wrong. So many emotions with this read. It took me a few chapters to really be pulled in the story plot.  This being said I’m pretty picky when it comes to books I chose to read. The book is very well written and there is not much of a down time with the book. So much goes on in this read that your keep on the edge just waiting to know what happens next.

You have two very strong head people; they have put walls up to protect them from different issues that have come up. This is one very intense roller coaster ride with no stops! Childhood friends they are pulled apart by one mistake that has led to others but end up getting back in touch by a review that is done. Derek is hot head and gets what he wants. Bess is a no holds bar when it come to her work as a report but when it comes to her ex-best friend she can’t seem to tell him what he did to make her hate him, and so we find them knocking heads when Bess review of Derek’s band comes out!

Looking forward to more from Derek and Bess!!!

excerptblue

My eyes roamed over his face, following the line of his eyebrow to his temple, down to his prominent cheekbone to his straight nose then over his full, beautiful lips that could be so gentle and so demanding at the same time. The lips that always spoke what was on his mind and never held back. “If only you did know me better, then you’d know that wasn’t what broke my trust in you. But maybe you wouldn’t have done it in the first place if you’d have thought about my feelings at all.”

He kissed my hand and spoke against my fingers. “What if I did think about your feelings, but got it wrong. You said I didn’t know you, so I might have done something I thought you would be okay with.”

I shook my head. “No. If that was true, you’re not the kind of person I should be here with right now.”

He held my hand more firmly. “So, if I was selfish and didn’t consider your feelings at all, it would be better than thinking you’d be okay with whatever horrible thing I did?”

“Are we going in circles? It sounds like we’re talking in circles.” Derek had the gift of gab and I had to be careful he didn’t talk his way out of this.

“Bess, whatever it was that I did, I’m so sorry. I apologize. But, I do know you well enough to know you won’t accept my apology without me realizing what I’m saying I’m sorry for. Correct?”

“Yes. And no, I won’t tell you. I know you well enough to know that if you think about it long enough, it’ll finally come to you.”

“Well, I know that you know that I know that—wait. We are going in circles.” He grinned and kissed my hand again. “Just know I can’t think of anything else and when it comes to me, I’ll be down on my knees begging forgiveness.”

We lay there for the longest time looking into each other’s eyes, listening to the ocean and the sound of our breathing in sync. My fingers itched to touch him, to trace over his arms, his chest, along his stomach, hold his hard cock in my hand again. I could almost hear his thoughts mirroring mine, wanting to touch and taste, caress and seek release.

Our hands were the only parts of us touching and I was so turned on my body hummed like a live wire. If the wind blew too hard, I’d explode. I could hear a slight hitch in my breathing. He had to hear it too.

“Don’t look down,” he whispered, his addictive lips so close I could feel each word against my own.

“Why?”

“I can’t help what’s happening in my head or my pants and don’t want something else to apologize for.”

I grinned and looked down. “I think you’re growing a tree in there.” God, he was well endowed.

“That explains why it feels like something’s about to break ground,” he said through gritted teeth.

My eyes found his again. The air between us hung heavy and dense with tension. “What’s on the A.P. friendship syllabus regarding this situation?”

He lifted our joined hands and ran his index finger over my lips. “You write the syllabus. I’m only here for the coursework.”

Not able to stand it one more second, I leaned in and brushed my lips to his. “It’s never only anything with you.”

I indulged with my lips and my tongue, rolling him to his back before making my way down his body to the hard, long gift in his trunks.

Synopsis

Part of Me , the latest New Adult romance from author, Haven Francis. Available July, 29th, 2014.

Within minutes of meeting Jessa, Paxton already understood that he would not be able to let her go if he ever really let her in. Which is why he spent his year in her small Minnesota town playing nice and being her friend. Because Jessa’s future was in Chicago and Chicago was the city where every bad memory Paxton has was made. It was a city he could never return to. And he doesn’t want to – he is finally free from his past and living recklessly in California with his Pops and the rest of his Venice family. But now that he has everything he has ever wanted, he can’t help but want more. And he can’t help but wonder if that more isn’t Jessa.

When her first real attempt at commitment leads to a disastrous first month of college in Chicago, Jessa has reaffirmed that in a relationship she will only be one thing – in control. Which means she keeps her relationships filled with sex and void of emotion. But it also means that, in this new life where she hoped to find herself, she is absolutely alone. That is until Paxton sends his friend Violet her way. Suddenly thrust into the life that Paxton left behind and sleeping in the bed in Violet’s apartment that Paxton made so his, Jessa is finally starting to feel like herself. But she is also discovering that she never really knew the guy she considered her best friend. Who the hell is this violent, womanizing, rock god that everyone here is so reluctant to tell her about?

With Jessa firmly planted in Paxton’s past, he can’t seem to let her go. But is heading back to Chicago, the city he is being paid to stay out of, for a girl who will never want anything more than a stable sexual partner worth the risk? Maybe. Maybe he will just have to slide back into his old bed and convince Jessa that part of her is still firmly planted inside of him. Maybe he will have to show her just how well they are made for each other.

Part of Me can be read as a standalone novel or with book two in the series, Inside of You.

Due to explicit sexual content, this book is intended for mature readers.

Excerpt

“Ready to call it a night, beso?”

“Yeah. It’s been a long day – having you around is tiring,” I tell him, flicking him on his arm before heading to my… our… room.

“As far as I can tell it’s you who is fucking up the entire vibe of the city. Things were pretty mellow last time I was here.”

“Funny,” I tell him, heading to the dresser and pulling out my shorts and tank top.

I turn to Paxton who is stripping out of his jeans- his hoodie and t-shirt are already on the floor. I can’t stop myself from running my eyes over his body as he stands before me. He really is beautiful in the coarsest of ways. I really wish his friends hadn’t put me on lockdown these past few weeks because a beautiful man like Paxton, standing before me in the flesh, is making my insides pound. Jesus, I need to get off ASAP. I look away from Paxton and peel off my dress and bra before pulling on my tank top. I turn back to him as I step into my shorts. He’s lounging in the bed, his arms propped above his head, the tats on the underside of his forearms displayed. I’m very aware that Paxton is watching me dress – something that he has seen before, but his heavy-lidded eyes have me working quick to get myself covered up.

“Pax, are we really sharing that tiny bed?”

“Yeah, beso, we are. Get your ass in here, I want to go to sleep.”

I let out a long breath and then go to him, sliding under the covers, acutely aware of the extra body that is now with me. I’m prepared for him to sling his arm around me but he doesn’t. We just lay next to each other in silence. I’m tired but I can’t sleep, not with him in this bed with me. So close, but in every form of the word, so far away.

“What happened with you and Elijah tonight?” he asks in his deep, quiet voice.

“You know… same shit as usual. You realize that your friends have been all over any guy that even looks my way?” I ask, curious how much of this long process was dictated by him.

He lets out a low laugh. “Fucking with your game, huh?”

“Yeah, they were. I finally find a guy that’s not terrified by the mere mention of your name and… surprise, surprise – the ultimate ladies’ man is nothing but a commitmentaholic underneath his bad boy skin. You would think I would be every man’s dream- all I want is a little release, a little fun. But can I find it? No, Pax, I cannot. I haven’t gotten any action since Dylan and the only kind of action I’ve gotten from him in the last few months is the husband kind. What the hell is wrong with me?” I know I’m spewing, but with anyone but Pax, Emily and Natalie, talking about my unconventional preferences comes off the wrong way. I need a verbal release. I need so many kinds of releases it’s not even funny.

“So he pulled out a ring and you bolted?”

“Yes, he got down on one knee and everything,” I say, snidely. “No. But he pulled the commitment talk out of his ass. I blame you,” I tell Paxton ‘cause I’m pretty sure it was his fault. “You stroll into town, move into my bed, flaunt your good looks in his face and my potential partner in sex pulls out the lockdown.”

Paxton laughs quietly before turning his back to me and making it known he’s calling it a night. “Keep trying, Jess. Your perfect man will come along eventually.”

“There is no perfect man,” I say, hunkering down into bed. “You are about the closest thing that I will ever have to my perfect man.”

“I’ve never gotten you off,” he mutters.

“Exactly, you’re the only guy in my life that I’ve been close to who has never gotten me off and therefore we haven’t ruined what we have. Sometimes I think about that night when I first met you. You were such a prick, but I’m glad. If we would have eventually had sex we wouldn’t have become friends. I wouldn’t have you in my life. It’s scary to think about,” I whisper. Paxton is so quiet, I wonder if he’s sleeping. “I don’t ever want to lose you.”

I wait a minute for him to respond, but it’s clear he’s dozed off. I close my eyes and try to do the same but I can’t. Now that Paxton’s here I just want to be with him. I want to stay up late and talk like we used to. I want to fall asleep on his chest like I used to. I turn and wrap my arms around his naked stomach, fitting my cheek against his warm back. I take in a big breath, letting Paxton’s familiar scent and his warm body comfort me.

With Paxton’s past in Glencoe behind him and Jessa’s walls destroyed, Jessa and Paxton are ready to start living. Determined to keep each other safe as they dive into Paxton’s former life with his band, Polly, their relationship deepens and together, they are becoming stronger.

But when a part of Paxton’s past arrives in Chicago, he and Jessa are sent on a physical and emotional journey that will test their love in ways they couldn’t have ever seen coming.

Loving each other is easy, but holding onto that love is proving to be the hardest thing they have ever done.

Excerpt

He whips his car around, pushing too hard on the accelerator. Once he’s heading down the road he reaches out and takes my hand in his. “If I can’t handle this, if it’s too much, I’m coming to get you.”

“Okay,” I agree. I’m not sure that I will actually be able to do this.

“You need to pick up your phone when I call. Don’t go forgetting it somewhere. I need you to pick up when I call.”

“I will,” I tell him.

“You need to remember how much I love you, beso. Don’t start thinking all kinds of fucked up thoughts.”

“I won’t, Pax. This will be good for us. I promise.”

“You’re full of shit, kid. I can’t believe I’m driving you to Dylan. This is fucked up.”

“You know you don’t need to worry about him. You know you don’t have to worry about anyone.”

“Whatever,” he says, shaking his head as we pull into campus.

“Stay away from her, Pax. I don’t want you around her while I’m gone.”

“She doesn’t matter, beso. You know that.”

“Please, Pax. Just stay away from her. Just while I’m gone,” I say, my voice cracking.

“I won’t go near her. I don’t want to be anywhere near her.”

“I’m sorry that I’m being so stupid. That I’m a crazy, jealous bitch.”

“You’re the only one I see, beso,” he says, his voice angry. Frustrated. “Where am I going?”

“It’s that one,” I say, pointing to Dylan’s dorm.

“Jesus, kid. I can’t believe I’m fucking doing this,” he says as Dylan, standing by his car, comes into view.

Paxton pulls up next to his car but he doesn’t release my hand. “Stay here with me, Jess.”

“Don’t, Pax. Don’t do that. I don’t want to go, so don’t do that.”

He lets go of my hand, shaking his head. He gets out of the car and slams his door shut. I get out too and wait while Paxton brings my suitcase to Dylan’s car and puts it in the trunk, slamming it closed. He walks to Dylan’s side and stares down at him. “Get her home and then stay the hell away from her. If you even look at her the wrong way I will kick your ass.”

“Jesus, relax.”

“Don’t tell me to fucking relax. I’m sending my girl off with you – the pathetic asshole who’s still trying to get her to notice him. I know you’re thinking you’re going to have all these hours with her and you’re already coming up with words you are going to say to her. You’re already wondering if you can turn this into something with her. So don’t tell me to fucking relax.”

“I’m not interested in your girl, okay,” he says, stepping out of Paxton’s space and getting in the car, shutting the door before fliping him off.

Paxton manages to ignore him and turns his attention to me. “You know he’s going to try and talk you into something. If you even hint at the fact that you are struggling with what’s going on with us he will play it up, Jessa. Don’t talk about us with him.”

“Paxton, stop. He’s nothing. He’s my ride home.”

Paxton picks me up and wraps me in his arms, I fasten my legs around his waist. “Get your shit straight and then come back to me.”

“I’m going to miss you so much,” I tell him.

“Good, I hope you’re miserable.”

“I will be,” I tell him.

“You deserve it for doing this to us. I’m going to be miserable.”

“Don’t be, Pax. Focus on your music. Your show is going to be great. It’s going to be good. We’re going to be good.”

He kisses me long and hard and when he lets go I have a hard time doing the same thing. “Get the fuck out of here, beso. I’m pissed at you,” he whispers, setting me down on the ground.

“I love you, Pax.”

“Yeah… I love you too,” he says, walking to his car and getting inside. He slams the door and doesn’t look back before he pulls away.

About The Author

Haven

My family and I still hang out with my parents every week just because we want to. My room in their house is still filled with a childhood full of books and writing journals… it makes me realize that family and books are, and have always been, vital in my life.

In college my love of both of these things grew when I met a quiet, totally hot, artist who would eventually become my husband and I read, “The Bell Jar”, by Sylvia Plath. If, after reading this statement, you are anticipating semibiographical stories of depression from me, you will be greatly disappointed, but that book really did change my life. I promptly became a double major, adding English literature to my fine arts degree. After graduation I took a great job restoring art, but I eventually found my way into the world of professional writing where I was able to travel the world forecasting trends in the home furnishing industry.

When my first child was born my focus took a drastic turn and I happily gave up my career to be home with her. All of my creative outlets were put on the back burner for several years and then one day… I started writing again. It was exhilarating to write my first book that I hope to publish one day if I can ever whittle it down to an acceptable length. That book was the first of many. Some are unedited, some are far too long, some are only half finished, one is lost completely, four are available on Amazon!

As a wife and mother who left her early twenties behind long, long ago, I have a slightly embarrassing fascination with the period of life that exists within the New Adult bubble – the years that sit awkwardly between childhood and adulthood when nothing is certain, lots of mistakes are made, falling in love is inevitable and you struggle to find yourself. For me, it’s a fun place to escape to and I hope my readers feel the same way!

Synopsis

Using unmatched skill and intelligence, Kurt captures the attention of every partner he desires. His ability to confuse his prey keeps them captivated. This trick has never failed him. That is, until he meets McKenna. As an author, McKenna has gone to great lengths to ensure the details of her erotic books are airtight. When Kurt challenges one of her scenes, she doesn’t hesitate to take up his offer to prove his theory. The bad boy MMA fighter appeals to her on every level. Kurt’s intelligence stimulates her mind even as his touch sets her body on fire. In spite of those things, McKenna has no intention of adding her name to his list of ex-lovers.
McKenna’s odd behavior exasperates Kurt. She is an addiction he cannot shake. But somehow the two of them make the combination of his OCD logic and her unbalanced nature work.

Inside Scoop: There are a couple hot but brief male/male encounters as well as a handcuff scene that may have you reaching for the fan.

Excerpt

She wasn’t wearing shoes. Funnily enough, it was the first detail about her that caught his eye. At a table, in public, Kurt found her shoeless state odd. There were a thousand tiny things about her he should have noticed first. Without a doubt, her plain black t-shirt, yoga pants and the overall lack of effort toward her appearance allowed her to blend into the background. It shouldn’t have mattered. Kurt wasn’t usually so blind. None of those points stole an ounce of power from her beauty. There wasn’t a hint of makeup marring her face. Blonde curls piled on her head held in place by some sort of clip. Something about her eyes held him captivated. They were unfocused as they moved across the pages of the book she held between her hands. In spite of that, he felt sure she absorbed every word, only on a different plane than others would.

He moved closer. The lack of footwear became an obsession. Curiosity ate at him. He needed to know why. The coffee shop located inside a G. Richards’ Bookstore had a sign posted clearly on the front door. “No shoes. No service.” Once Kurt managed to snag the chair directly across from her, he bent at the waist. Under the guise of dropping a napkin, he peered under the edge of her table. Suspicions confirmed. His brows drew together in a frown as he sat up.

After a moment of staring at the corner, he couldn’t stand it any longer.

“Your feet are bare.”

Lifting her gaze from the book between her hands, she blinked several times. He could practically see her dragging her mind away from whatever cloud it was on.

“What?”

“Your feet,” he repeated. “They have no shoes on them.”

“Oh. I’d forgotten.” She immediately dismissed him by returning to her reading.

“You’re inside a business. They serve food.”

She didn’t bother glancing his way as she responded.

“If that bothers you, I won’t mention the state of my underwear.”

He had to know. “Did you forget those, as well?”

That got her attention. A line formed between her eyes as if his question was too stupid for her to fathom.

“How does someone forget their underwear?”

“How does a person forget their shoes?” He shot back.

Tilting her head to one side, she seemed to think it over for a moment before responding. “Is this a trick question?”

Kurt scoffed as he reminded her of the obvious. “You’re not wearing them.”

Her mouth turned up in one corner in such a way his gaze immediately shot to her lips. “I’m aware.”

Unable to keep the exasperation from his voice, Kurt sighed. “You said you’d forgotten your shoes. It stands to reason then, you would know how one goes about it.”

Setting her book aside, she nodded slowly as if giving his theory due consideration. “Your logic is sound,” she admitted after a moment. Finally, they were getting somewhere. She immediately ruined it by adding, “Except, I said no such thing. Therefore, I cannot help you.”

There was a moment where he had nothing. He couldn’t recall a single incident where anyone had caused his mind to go blank. His brain was always on the move, slightly dissatisfied with his lot. She’d wiped him clean. Her blue eyes focused on him fully as if awaiting his next move. When he wasn’t quick enough, she released a heavy sigh.

“If you must know, when I got here I realized I had on two different colored shoes so I took them off.”

Without waiting to see his reaction, she flipped her book up between them, shutting him out. A part of him wanted to laugh at her confession. He was too fascinated. Not to mention, with his curiosity assuaged he really wanted to hear more about the rest.

“What about your underwear?”

She ignored him. He bit back a smile. His mind whirled back to life and he searched for a new way to insert himself into her company. Tilting his head, he read the title blocking her eyes from his gaze. The Ins and Outs of BDSM. Catchy title. Switching his gaze to the other items scattered across her table, he took note of another book on bondage as well as some handwritten notes. As far as he could tell by what she’d scratched out, she was either intent on rocking some dude’s world or plotting one hell of a murder.

He braced his elbows on the table, lowering his voice where only she could hear. “I have handcuffs back at my place.”

She set the book aside. Mimicking his pose, her eyes shone with mirth as she pitched her voice low, as well. “I have a Taser in my handbag.”

Holding back his laughter, Kurt didn’t miss a beat. “Kinky,” he said, adding a wink. “I like it.”

Snorting, she slapped her hand over her mouth and nose as if she couldn’t believe what she’d done.

“I’m Kurt,” he offered before she could escape into her mind again.

“McKenna.”
