Every person’s life tells a story.
Some are uncomplicated, straightforward, and easy. Things fall into place with a simplicity that boggles the mind.
Others twist and turn, and every day is centered on fighting and scraping, yet never finding victory.

And then there are those who gain an inch only to be knocked back a foot. They love. They fight. They stumble. They fall. But through it all, they stagger to their feet, step back on life’s path, and push through until they win. For these people, happiness is not an illusion. It’s a truth, a promise, worth any effort, any scars, but just out of arm’s reach. It stands at the end of the path, taunting and teasing, tempting them to take one more blow.
And in the end, the battles make victory sweeter. More valued. More precious than ever imagined. More than any one person could hope.
This is Liam’s story.
Loyal, protective, shoulders stronger than Atlas’.

Broken, worn, battered.

Win or lose, he’s ready to fight for what tomorrow brings.

Life. Love. Healing. Hope.

Annie’s eyes widened and filled with shame. Her lower lip trembled as she whispered her apology. “Sorry, Uncle Liam. That wasn’t very nice of me.” Her body curled into itself, and she grew smaller right before his eyes. Tears slipped down her cheeks as her tiny voice cracked. “Daddy wouldn’t be very proud of me, would he?”
“Aww, honey.” His heart melted. That her first thought was of what her father’s reaction might be didn’t surprise him. He longed for the day when she would accept that Tripp wasn’t coming back to them.
Though she tried to be strong for her younger sisters, the burden was too heavy for Annie to carry. Like her mother, she still struggled fiercely with her dad’s death. As the oldest of the three girls, her father’s memory whirled through her mind on constant repeat. Even though more than two years had passed, she sometimes waited beside the door, hoping Tripp would walk through and sweep her up in his arms. More than once, Liam had caught her carrying on a conversation with her dad, reminiscing about the time they’d spent together. The past Christmas had hit her hard, and her uncle had spent most of the day with her tiny body snuggled on his lap, attempting to soothe her and encouraging her to enjoy the day.
No child should need coaxing to open her gifts.
He leaned down and tipped her chin up, forcing her to look him in the eyes. “Baby girl, if your daddy were here, there wouldn’t be enough room to hold the pride he’d have for you.” The sight of her glistening eyes and wet face slammed against his heart. Pain shot through him, and a single tear traced a path down his cheek. His voice cracked under the weight of his grief. “He would see you growing up, being such a good big sister, and helping your momma all the time.” He thumbed the tear from his ruddy cheek, lifted her off the floor, and carried her to the couch.
“And he would snatch you right up and tell you just how proud he is of you, how much he loves you.” His arms tightened around her, trying to calm her shuddering sobs. “I know I’m not him, and I never will be, but I love you, and I’m so proud of you. You’re such an amazing little girl.” He chuckled quietly and tickled her side. “Or maybe not such a little girl, as I’ve been recently reminded.”
His joking words produced the result he wanted. Blinking her eyes at a rapid pace, she looked up at him and cracked a small smile.
“Thanks, Uncle Liam.” She settled back against his chest, her words coming out in choppy huffs. “I really am sorry I was mean to you. I just miss him so much.” Her breath hitched, and her petite body melted against him.
“Oh, sweetheart, I know you didn’t mean it.” He brushed a kiss on the top of her head. “And just remember, there’s nothing wrong with being sad or missing your daddy. We all miss him, every single day.”
He may not be their dad, but he loved those girls more than life, and his primary goal was to ensure their happiness and wellbeing.
Liam squeezed her close as his eyes drifted to the kitchen doorway. Wrynn leaned against the doorframe and mouthed thank you. Her mahogany hair was tangled and unkempt. Stains dotted her sweatshirt. Liam wouldn’t be surprised if those were the same clothes she’d slept in the night before. What he wouldn’t give to see her happy and carefree again. Because grief had a way of aging a person, she looked much older than their twenty-eight years. Her pale face flushed as she wept.
Glad I have Wrynn’s girls to fill the empty. Don’t know what I’d do without them.
His thought made him grimace. He tried not to dwell on his lack of family, but at times, when he was with Wrynn and his nieces, it became harder to fight back the desire to have his own. He often wondered if he was meant to live his life alone because he’d yet to meet the right woman he wanted to share in his life, his love, his family.
“Okay, guys and dolls, let’s eat.” His sister’s hoarse voice broke through his musings.
He wrapped Annie in one arm, grabbed six-year-old Bekah in the other, and turned sideways on the couch to help Maggie climb on his back. Satisfied all three were safe and secure, he stood to his feet and lurched toward the kitchen with giant, fumbling steps. Giggles rang out around him. He placed Annie and Bekah in their chairs, then leaned forward and flipped Maggie over his shoulder. Lifting her above his head, he nibbled on her toes. As her laughter increased, he blew raspberries on her belly before sitting her down and strapping her in her booster seat.

Searching for Tomorrow (#1) – Released Oct 13, 2013

Some people are blessed to find that one certain person who completes them. Wrynn’s yesterdays were what others only dream of having. She and Tripp were the best of friends before they even thought about love. They had the fairy tale life where ‘like’ turns into ‘love’, and ‘love’ becomes ‘happily ever after’…

What happens when life conspires against you, and snatches your soul mate from your arms?

… Only her forever love ended much too soon.

Broken beyond her own ability to repair, Wrynn boxes up her grief and attempts to raise her three girls the best she can on her own. As time slowly passes, Wrynn relives her life with Tripp while struggling most days to get out of bed. She is reminded of him at every turn.

How do you set your grief and anguish aside? How do you pick up the shattered pieces, put those pieces back together again, and try to move on?

Wrynn tries to find the joy in life every single day through her daughters, family, and friends. Her twin brother Liam has dedicated himself to helping Wrynn put her life back together after losing his own love. On the other hand, her mother-in-law lives to torment her at every turn. Wrynn can’t even find a chance to breathe, much less a desire to somehow search for her tomorrow.

“So I take it you like to watch.”

A shiver ran down his back. Her voice wove through him easily, adding to the images his imagination already employed. “Depends on what I’m watching.”

“I see. What is it about a battle that gets you going then? Is it the men? I mean, we do have some fine Warriors.” Her light laughter teased him. “Trust me, I know.”

“It wasn’t the Warriors that made me linger.” Much as he wanted to turn around, he knew that seeing her would add to his mental imagery. It could be very detrimental to a logical conversation. If he cared about such a thing. Then again, did he really care about such a thing? Because, damn. She made it seem unimportant.

“Honest. Well, either you’re honest or you just don’t like me thinking you’re ogling men.” The light touch of her fingers to his arm sent a jolt through his entire body. What the hell was it about her?

“No. Just honest. If you were honest you’d admit that you were angling for me to watch you. From the start.” He quirked a brow. “That’s why you haven’t approached me yet. Right?”

“Oooh, conceited too.” A light chuckle reached his ears. Then she stepped around him her presence a rich heat against the sudden cold pit in his stomach. Chocolate eyes, deeper than he’d imagined sought him out. The sun caught her hair, revealing a red undertone unexpected in a native of the Tribe. Then again, nothing about this woman was expected. “Perhaps I’ve just been very busy. There is a wedding happening very soon, you know.”

“So I’ve heard. The Chief’s son and the Medicine Man’s daughter. Quite a pairing.” Truth be told he’d met neither of the betrothed youths. Then again he’d met very few people on the reservation yet. By choice. “Are you saying you’re involved?”

A small twitch at the corner of delicious lips belied her amusement. “Yes. I know both of them very well. The wedding is keeping everyone busy.”

She appeared to be hiding something. What it was, he had no idea. Then again he didn’t think he wanted to know. This one was handful enough without all the details, instinct told him that much. So why did he want to know more? “Obviously not too busy for some playtime with the Warriors.”

“I need to keep my skills sharp. Stitching beads and planting flowers aren’t on my list of fun things to do. I’ve fought with the Warriors for as long as I was first allowed to.” Her lip made that coy quirk again. “Then when I got older I fought with them in more ways than one.”

“I’m sure you did.”

“So are you done with talking now?”

“What else did you have in mind?”

One by one her fingers inched up his chest. “Well I admit I’m curious what an old man is capable of. Does the experience help you or hinder you?”

Every touch raised his temperature, his blood boiling by the time he managed to close his hand over hers. “Just how would it hinder me?”

“It’s easy to get stuck in a rut. As you get older and more ancient you forget that there can be new, fun, and exciting ways to do things. In all forms of battle.”

“Is that so?”

“So are you stuck in a rut?”

“Not that I know of.”

Her soft hum shivered through him to his core. It bothered him that she took that moment to step back. The summer heat that replaced her paled in comparison to her presence. “In other words yes. Interesting.”

“Are you always so contrary?” Kane closed the distance between them. His body burned with the need to feel her close again. Once again the Wolf pushed its own need forward to mesh with Kane’s, blinding him. Logic had no chance now.

“It’s the only way to live. Life is too boring otherwise.”

“Hate being bored, do you?” Kane gripped her arm and whipped her around to face him. Despite her gasp a smile lit her features. The body he’d admired pressed willingly into his. It drove him to the brink.

“Very much so.” Breathless, eager.

The Wolf pushed through Kane’s last hint of doubt and his lips claimed hers. Without hesitation her hands roamed along his chest and back, spreading their heat along his nerves. It made him regret not returning to traditional dress yet. At the moment he’d give anything to feel her hands directly on his flesh.

Her mind proved to be on the same track, the shriek of tearing cotton exposing his flesh to the hot air. Then her hands were on his chest, nails raking at the skin. Her soft moan rattled through him when her back hit a tree.

Kane fought back to the forefront, wanting to enjoy every second. As one of her legs hooked around his waist he gripped the flesh and pressed hard into her. Each of his earlier fantasies springing to life one by one.

Until she froze, her nails still embedded in his chest. Tension seeped through her just before she pushed him back. “No.”

He couldn’t stop his growl, the frustration too strong to ignore. She stopped him now? After that build up? “What?”

“I shouldn’t.”

“Don’t seem like the type to care about that.”

“I’m not.” Her breath shook, her hands trembling as she tried to pull back away from him. “This is not. Not the same.”

One glimpse of her trembling lip doused the heat. Down deep he felt a stirring of concern, the Wolf whined quietly. Why on earth did his Wolf want to help her? To soothe her? The Wolf had never cared before. Now it did, and so did Kane. Gently he ran his thumb along her lower lip “How so?”

“Don’t.” She slapped his hand away so fast he never saw her move.

“Thought you liked to push boundaries.” One thumb brushed along the soft skin of her stomach, unable to stop touching her completely. Every fiber of his being wanted to get her wrapped in his arms again. Even so he was willing to wait. To get her story along with her body.

“Not this one.”

“Am I too old for you?”

That earned him a snort. “You are too old for everyone but the Sphinx.” At last she started to relax a bit.

“Good point.” He chuckled, relaxing a bit himself now that she loosened up enough to joke with him. “Is it because we’re in the woods?”

“No. I’m all for a good screw against a tree. A little rough with the fun is always and added bonus.” She smirked. “Unless you like saccharine.”

“I’m diabetic.” His sarcasm made her laugh again. He leaned in. “Just as well. Don’t even know your name.”

“I suppose it’s for the best.” Her breath brushed his ear. “I’m a tease anyway, right?”

“I hope not.”

Genre: Erotic romance, humor, thriller, suspense, military, action/adventure
Release Date: April 25, 2016

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000446_00066]

From the world of bad boys of Retribution MC comes a deliciously dangerous, scandalously sexy, four part series!

Good girl versus Bad boy. Southern charm comes head-to-head with military grit. They say opposites attract. That’s an understatement where Justice and Lawless are concerned.

JUSTICE

Let’s face it. I’ve got a bad rep with the ladies. I’m a rough-talking, smooth-loving, international playboy—yeah right, whatever—and an X-Ops specialist. Sure, I’m hiding a secret or two. Who isn’t? That’s the least of my concerns when I’m called in to lead an infiltrate-and-retrieve mission.

I’ve got my head in the game—the one firmly attached to my shoulders. An American embassy overseas is under siege, and I’m expecting to rescue the ambassador and his daughter, a stereotypical geeky damsel in distress, Matilda Lawless.

Caught in the crossfire between explosive danger and wild desire, I’m in for the shock of my life.

TILLY

I’m not looking for any man to save me. I’m pretty damn capable of taking care of myself, thank you very much. I have a successful career and was practically born and bred on a gun range, even if I can’t bake a perfect biscuit to save my life like a good southern woman should.

But there’s just something about that hardcore operative called Justice. He’s haunted and lonely, and I know that pain inside and out. It doesn’t hurt one little bit he’s been blessed with more than his fair share of good looks, plus a body that would make any red-blooded woman drool.

Barricaded inside the embassy, under my father’s shrewd eyes, I intend to have Justice no matter how many times he says he’s not good enough. I see the way he watches me. With dirty, sexy, hungry lust.

Fighting is what Justice does. Now I need him to fight for me.

Warning: Graphic sex, graphic action, graphic language. Triple X caution.

Justice Kindle

“I think you’d best get some rest, Matilda.” My voice came out low but razor sharp, my words blunt and unmuffled.

If I had to be an asshole to her to maintain the necessary distance I would, because the suddenness of wanting her so damn much was painful.

And futile.

And stupid beyond belief.

“Tsk.” She waltzed into the room all bare, tan legs and warm, soft scent.

Her fingers flicked at my forehead, and I reared back in surprise.

“Tilly, Ah told you. Only my grandmother has ever called me Matilda, and she’s so stiff I think she was molded into the apron she put on after she got married in 1948. I am not a Matilda.”

First of all, I couldn’t believe she’d flicked me. Me! A goddamn ex-marine and special operative.

And second, a grin crept up one side of my mouth, but I swallowed down the laugh that wanted to follow.

“What’s that?” Tilly pointed at the notebook resting in my lap.

“Uh.” Fuck. I’d completely forgotten about the damn thing. “Nothing.” I quickly rolled it up and stashed it in my pocket. “Bullshit on pages. Gonna make a bonfire out of it later.”

I pulled out a throwing star I always flipped back and forth between my fingers. It flashed like lightning, throwing sparks of light across the room.

A much more manly pursuit.

Jesus. I am losing it.

Maybe I need some sleep after all.

I groaned.

Tilly plopped right down beside me with upraised legs, leaning the back of her head against the wall. “God, but it’s hot in here.”

Plucking at her shirt that ballooned before settling back against the firm round hills of her tits, she rolled her head toward me. “Justin, right?”

I met her eyes for a moment to see the twinkle in her irises.

“Justice.” I growled.

“Justice? Hmm. Justice what?”

“I’m not giving out that information.” I made my frown as formidable as ever, but I could tell she didn’t give a shit.

She leaned close enough her warm breath caressed my ear. “Who would I tell?”

“Chase . . . Justice Chase.” The words tumbled from my mouth.

She clapped a hand over her mouth to withhold a giggle. “Well, that’s not so bad, is it? Imagine if it was Chase Justice.”

“It’s not that.” Maybe a little. “No one’s supposed to know . . . who I really am.”

“Lawless and Justice, huh?” Her hand found my forearm, and her fingers squeezed the steel cable muscles. “Sounds like an outlaw movie. The next big blockbuster. I promise to keep your secret, Justice Chase.”

Spunky Tilly somehow lifted all the fatigue from my body, and I aimed a feral grin at her.

Her eyelashes fluttered. Her smile became a softer curve of her lips.

Her fingers traced all the way down to my wrist where a pulse pounded a heavy beat before she skimmed her hand to my thigh and down to the floor between us.

She made my body thump and my blood race. She made sensations fire like a network of heat to the center of my groin.

Maybe it was just the day, the night, the adrenaline rush that hadn’t worn off and probably wouldn’t. The same thing happened with every op—unleashed energy I usually slaked afterward by fucking. Fucking hard. Randomly. Anonymously.

Here there was no one to screw. Except Tilly.

There was no escaping her presence either, and, man, did I want to fuck the living daylights out of her.

I lifted one knee and casually—oh so casually—crossed a forearm over it so my hand nearly dangled in my lap, obscuring my growing hard-on from view.

“You should stay in your quarters, Matilda.” My voice sounded like gravel, and I shifted again.

“Is that a direct order, sir?”

HAMISH
I was born to an alcoholic mother and alcoholic, drug dealing father. Not a good start to life for a young boy. I was born to sin.
I’ve lied, cheated, assaulted, been an adulterer and stolen. It’s how one survives the ‘hood’. I have a reputation for being the ‘bad boy’, the fuck ’em and leave ’em type. I have never spent the night with a woman and I have never brought a woman home. We ‘play’ at her place and as soon as I’m done, I leave.
After fleeing my home at the age of thirteen and living on the streets – an option I found better than being with my parents, my life is turned around by an elderly lady.
I educate myself, become an award winning chef and return to the ‘hood where I rent an apartment. I love and care about no-one and nothing except my Harley Motorcycle. It’s here I met Jonesy and he takes my life in a whole new direction. Along with Wade, a fellow chef and the only person I can trust, the pair teach me how to love. Not only myself, but others.

BLOSSOM
I’m a wealthy Restaurateur thanks to an inheritance I received when my father passed.
I live in a penthouse apartment in the ‘rich’ part of the city.
Being pampered and spoiled all my life has turned me into a woman who sees something she wants and, like a dog with a bone, I won’t let go until it’s mine. I’m a winner. I ALWAYS win.
I don’t have relationships with men. One night stands suit me just fine. I can’t trust it’s me they want and not my money.
I meet Hamish by chance when I’m on the hunt for a new Head Chef. He treats me like I’m not worth a second thought. I’ve never been treated this way and I decide at that moment, I will make Hamish mine.

Hamish has no interest in the pampered Blossom but for some reason she gets under his skin.
Then, something happens that makes him realize, he has fallen in love. Will it be too late? Will tragedy strike before he can hold her in his arms and confess his true feelings?

Dreams And Screams Bookaholics EXCERPT

“Shit, that was good.” Caroline sighs as I pull out of her and roll over. “Can we go out? Will you stay the night?” “Nope. Gotta work.” I slide off the bed and pad to the bathroom across the hall. It’s as bad as the rest of Caroline’s apartment. Broken and cracked tiles, years of filth discoloring the grout, the bathtub so stained I wouldn’t even think to lower my ass onto the grime. Peeling paint like the other rooms, torn vinyl on the floors. Not unlike my place two blocks away. Well, I at least keep my place clean. Most of the apartment blocks in the ’hood are run down, squalid hovels. The apartments haven’t seen maintenance in years because, unless you live in the ’hood, you don’t come here. Crimes are committed every hour, screaming, gun shots, rats in the filth ridden streets. It’s all a common sight to us natives of the area. It’s why I want to get out of here. Why I’m desperate to live somewhere decent with decent people. I’ve tried to rent in an area closer to work. A nice ‘burb close to the city. The realtors take one look at my references, note where I’ve been living and tell me the place is taken. It doesn’t matter that I clean up nice before I go and see them. It doesn’t matter that I’ve managed to get myself an education and have been working as a chef at a prestigious city restaurant. Nope, once a ’hood boy, always a ’hood boy as far as they’re concerned. It is impossible to rid myself of the stigma. Once I would have worn it as a badge of honor, now I want something better. I dispose of the condom and return to the bedroom. Caroline is stretched out on the bed like a contented cat. Fuck, she’s got a gorgeous body. “Why won’t you stay? Even when you don’t have to work, you won’t stay.” I hate the whining that has been happening lately. “Babe, I’ve told you. I don’t stay anywhere except my own bed in my own apartment. Alone.” She leans up on her elbow. “We’ve been going out for almost a month and all you’ve done is text me and order me to meet you here so you can make love to me.” I raise my hands in front of my still naked body. My dick is now flaccid, soft. Totally turned off with her whining. “How long have you lived in this neighborhood?” I watch her frown while she wonders why I’ve asked a question I already know the answer to. “Nine years.” “You know my reputation?” She lowers her eyes. “Yes.” “And?” “You fuck ’em and leave ’em.” “So, why do you ask if I’m staying the night?”

Leslie Wilder grew up in a small town in West Tennessee. A country girl at heart, she’s always thought that life is too short, but she had no idea how short it really was until her brother passed away in 2014. She’s always been an avid reader, loving the escape only a great book can give, and wondered if she had what it took to write one of the wild romances she’d come to adore. With the support of her family and friends, she published Inferno: A Devil Chaser’s MC, one year after her brother’s death. With him in mind, she fulfilled her lifetime dream of writing. Since then, she’s completed the Devil Chaser’s Series and continued on with the Satan’s Fury MC Series. She has so many stories in her head, and can’t wait to share each and every one.
Leslie has been blown away by the support of her readers, appreciating every message, review, and encouraging word she’s received over the past year. She looks forward to continuing this journey with them for years to come.

Prologue
Payton
I was eleven years old when Maggie, my mother, left. Just packed her bags and walked away. She just couldn’t deal with it anymore; the hate and anger was all too much. But there was something I would never understand. Why did she choose to leave me behind? It was something I often wondered.
That was seven years ago.
Seven long years of dealing with the backlash of her absence. My father had always been a broody, irritable man—extremely unapproachable. I guess that was one of the reasons my mother chose to leave. That, and the fact he was a heavy drinker. Alcohol, to him, was like breathing; it was something his body had to have to survive. His perpetual intoxication almost always led to a fight between them—a physical fight full of anger. For days I would see the marks of those disagreements gracing my mother’s beautiful face. He tore her down whenever and however he could. I remember lying in bed at night wishing I could stop him, hoping for someone, anyone, to take my mother and me away to safety.
At all costs I found myself doing whatever I could to avoid him. Though he never lay a hand on me before Maggie left, things changed afterward. He became even angrier and more violent; I never even thought that was possible. Those nights of terror I used to listen to my mother live through now became my own.
It didn’t matter what I did or how much I abandoned, in his eyes I still screwed everything up. He blamed me for all that was wrong in his life; it all fell at my feet.
Soon it would all be over; I had plans. All I had to do was finish these last few months of school and I could escape forever. No matter what it took, or how many jobs I had to work, I would be rid of John Walters.

Chapter One

Everly

I saw him again today.

It was at the mall this time.

He was wearing a grey suit and it was just seconds this time before he disappeared around a corner and my life returned to normal once more.

It had been two years and yet I still saw him. Everywhere.

The day after that fateful night, I saw him in our neighborhood walking a dog. Months later, he was next to me at a stoplight when I went out for groceries. Two weeks ago when Ryan got down on one knee and placed a dazzling diamond ring on my left hand, I swear I saw his face the minute I said yes.

He was like a ghost—my own personal poltergeist.

I knew it wasn’t really him. My therapist had reminded me of that simple fact over a thousand times, but that didn’t stop my heart from skipping a beat or my lungs deflating of air every time I saw someone that looked like him pass in my direction.

It could be the color of a person’s hair or the way someone laughed that set my body on edge.

Today, it was simply a suit.

Tailored, dark grey with a small pinstripe. The style had been his favorite, and even though the man who wore it looked nothing like him, I still found myself frozen in the middle of the food court.

Still as ice, unable to move.

Because life really didn’t move on from a person such as August Kincaid.

No, you simply learned to adapt and above all, you survived.

And that was what I had been doing for the last two years.

Surviving.

“Hey, you went blank again. Are you okay?” Sarah asked.

I looked around, and the world suddenly shifted back into focus. Children cried and

begged for ice cream, teenagers laughed and flirted as they walked by us. The smell of cinnamon rolls and cheap Chinese food mixed and mingled, as people pushed and shoved their way around to get in ridiculously long lines. Life went on around me as I returned to the land of the living.

“Yeah, I’m fine,” I assured her. Concern was written all over her beautiful, trim face. Her hand lifted briefly as if she were going to offer a hug, but quickly decided against it.

“Okay,” she answered, defeat clearly written all over her face. She knew I wouldn’t talk about it.

I never did.

There were certain things that just didn’t need to be shared.

Specific memories of my past were one of them.

She already knew I was a nutcase yet for some reason became my friend despite this. I guess we had that specific trait in common. We’d met in the waiting room at my therapist’s office. She was a recovering purger, or at least that’s what she called it. Since the time Sarah was barely old enough to vote, she’d been suffering from a variety of eating disorders. She attributed her illnesses to a dance mentor who’d never thought she was thin enough to be a ballerina.

“When all you want to do is be the Swan Princess in Swan Lake, you make sacrifices,” she’d told me that day in the office very matter-of-factly. Sarah was at peace with her issues. She’d gone through years of counseling and this year would finally be the swan princess she always dreamed of being—fully in control of what she considered her “livable flaws.”

Me?

Well, I guess we all had issues that lingered. Some had visible flaws they could see in the mirror, touch with their hands…measure on a scale. Others, like me, had memories that woke us from sleep and haunted our waking hours, making normal, well—different.

I doubted there would ever be any glorious end of the rainbow moment that would somehow magically cure me of all my flaws.

But, I was working on it and Ryan had made a world of difference in my once bleak outlook on life. Now I saw possibilities where there once was only darkness. He brought hope to my sadness and light to my life. There wasn’t a day that went by that I wasn’t thankful for his persistence in seeking me out.

I’d been a hard one to nail down, or so he told me.

“So, are you ready?” she asked, grabbing my hand and moving away from the frozen yogurt and fried food.

“As I’ll ever be,” I sighed, taking one last longing look at the exit.

“Oh come on. Most girls are excited to do this. Hell, I’ve been excited for this day for weeks!”

“Then say you’re me,” I begged, as we turned the corner and my eyes spotted the brightly lit sign at the end of the walkway. I could feel the groan already forming, the deep rumbling sound vibrating through my lungs as it made its way up to express my displeasure.

“Everly Adams. You will not ruin this for me! This is your day and you will enjoy it!” “I thought my day was several months from now,” I joked.

“As the blushing bride-to-be, you will have lots of days between now and then. Get used

to the attention.”

I groaned again, looking at the floor-to-ceiling windows that displayed more tulle and

sequins than I’d seen in my entire life. “We should have eloped.”

“This is horrid, Sarah,” I whined, shuffling out of the dressing room in a gown that could only be described as a cross between the Little Mermaid and that scary Alfred Hitchcock movie with all the birds.

“It’s beautiful! And so fashion forward,” she practically squealed, clapping her hands together like a happy toddler who had just been given a lollipop for supper. “Look at the way the fabric gathers together, making it look like tiny feathers at the bottom of the skirt. So dramatic.”

“That,” I said, pointing to my calves,” is also where my legs are supposed to be able to move back and forth. It’s called walking. I look ridiculous!”

“Walking is so overrated. Besides, how much walking are you planning to do in this thing?” She rolled her eyes, kneeling down to play with the skirt some more. It resulted in the tulle or whatever the puffy stuff was called doubling in size.

“There, perfect.”

“I’m not wearing this,” I said firmly, trying to look anywhere but at the three different mirrors all reflecting my ridiculous reflection. “Pick another one. And for the love of God, pick something less…well, less you!”

I once again attempted to walk back into the dressing room, doing more of a waddle than a walk. Once there, I was joined by an attendant to assist me. There was no way I could get out of this monstrosity by myself.

“Your tattoo is lovely. Quite unique,” the bridal attendant said, as she stood behind me and removed the clamps that held the dress in place. My thin, boy-like frame never did fit into sample sizes well. The lack of hips and boobs kept me in sizes most women would die to wear, but the lack of aforementioned body parts sometimes sucked. A lot.

Especially when trying on wedding dresses. Or anything remotely feminine. I felt more like a pre-pubescent boy trying on drag than a beautiful, curvy woman.

“Thank you,” I answered awkwardly, as my hand instinctively reached behind my shoulder to touch the piece of me that I rarely shared with others. The walls of mirrors put my body completely on display, highlighting every rough curve and jutted angle, exposing the harsh black lines of the branch as it wove up my back and around my shoulder.

“Why doesn’t the bird fly away? She’s free,” she said absently, her head cocked to the side as she stared at the birdcage etched on my right shoulder. It was intricate and beautiful as it hung on the barren branch, the door swung wide open for the world to peer in on the tiny bird inside.

“Maybe she’s not ready yet,” I answered quietly, looking away.

“Okay, I’ve got another one, Everly! And I promise, you’re going to love it!” Sarah’s singsong voice seemed to break the spell hovering above us, giving us both a startle. The attendant straightened, turning quickly as I retreated into the corner to grab the satin robe. I’d just fastened it around my waist when she opened the door to let Sarah in.

“Tell me you love me,” Sarah said as she waltzed into the room, holding up a simple ivory colored empire waist gown with a small amount of beading around the neckline and not a single bit of organza or tulle in sight.

“I think I love you,” I said, as my eyes widened at the understated elegance of the dress. Simple and understated. Everything I wanted to be.

“Let’s try it on,” she suggested, handing it to the attendant who motioned for me to come forward.

Nodding, I agreed, knowing it was unnecessary.

It was perfect and as I glanced around the room, I caught a glimpse of that tiny bird on my shoulder. The one too afraid to jump out of her cage and discover the world outside.

Soon, I would be perfect, too.

Or as close as I could be to the word.

“You are mine, Everly,” he whispered. “Mine and mine alone. I own every part of you, every inch of your body…every breath in your lungs. You. Belong. To. Me.”

“Everly,” another voice murmured. “Everly, wake up. You fell asleep right at the good part again,” Ryan laughed.

My eyes cracked open as the glow of the TV made me turn my head toward the comfort of his warm chest.

“Hey, sleepyhead,” he said, pulling me tight against his body. “You’ll never know who the winter soldier is now,” he joked, his head leaning forward just close enough that I felt the heat of his breath against my neck.

“I saw that plot twist ages ago,” I answered, covering a quiet yawn with my palm as I stretched in his arms.

“You always do.”

“I can’t help it. The story lines are always so obvious.”

“And if you had written the story,” he said, pulling back slightly with a boyish grin

lighting up his face, “What would you have done differently?”

“I don’t know—I’m not a scriptwriter,” I answered with a shrug.

“Maybe you should be.” His brow arched, challenging me to answer.

“Who’s being the obvious one now, Ryan?” I asked with a huff, rising from my

comfortable spot on the couch in order to create some much needed distance. “And seriously? Scriptwriting? Pick something a little less insane next time. When have you ever seen me pick up a pen? Or sit in front of a computer?”

Whenever the subject of where I was going with my life came up, I needed space.

Unfortunately our apartment was only so big, and right now a football field or two didn’t seem large enough.

“I don’t want to start an argument, Ev, but I just want you to think about it.”

“I have been thinking about it,” I answered, stepping into the kitchen as the lights flickered on. I pulled open the refrigerator and grabbed a bottle of water. Roughly twisting the cap off, I upturned the bottle and chugged half the contents in one gulp. Water was definitely not my first beverage of choice, but right now I didn’t have the patience for anything else.

“And what have you decided?” he asked cautiously, rising from the couch to take a seat at the kitchen island across from me.

“That I’m still deciding.” I held my head high, avoiding his eye contact.

I was not in the wrong here.

He sighed long and slow, and I let the silence settle between us, setting the half-empty

bottle down on the counter in front of me. A quick glint of light caught my attention as I turned my head and I swiveled back around toward my left hand, noticing the way the overhead lights reflected on the small diamond centered in the middle of the thin gold band.

Three weeks ago he’d asked me to marry him and I’d said yes.

Despite everything I’d put him through—the cold indifference and the numerous rebuttals to his advances, he’d loved me. When I’d told him there would always be a part of me unavailable…that I just couldn’t share, he’d accepted me. For who I was.

And what I was willing to give him.

“I’ll look at the brochures again,” I said, offering up an olive branch as I stepped forward and held out the rest of my water bottle. His warm smile returned as his fingers encased mine around the plastic.

“I just want to see you succeed. In whatever you chose, Ev. Hell, you can major in basket weaving for all I care. I just want you to feel like you have a purpose in life beyond working at that coffee shop you refuse to quit.”

“I know, and I love you for it,” I replied, feeling the deep gaze of his eyes settle on mine. Needing to be closer to him, I walked out of the kitchen and walked into his arms at the counter where he sat.

He pulled me into his large frame, where the world felt safe and measurable again.

“I do make a mean cup of coffee,” I said, my lips curving into a smile.

His fingers cupped my chin, tilting it toward his dark brown eyes.

“I know. Why do you think I kept coming back every damn day? It wasn’t your charming personality.”

“I thought it was my ass,” I laughed, shaking it as his hands closed around each cheek and squeezed.

“Ah yes. The ass of a porn star and the mouth of a mime. No matter how hard I tried, I could never get you to talk to me.”

“Such a sweet talker, and besides—I was told to never speak to strange men,” I said, quickly hating myself for saying it. My face slipped slightly as my stomach turned, rolling and churning as my mind replayed unwanted memories from my past.

I never, ever want to see you speaking to another man again. Do you understand me, Everly?

The words rolled around in my head as I tried to shake them out. In the last two years of my life, I’d had a thousand moments like this. A glance, a turn of phrase—anything could bring them on. I’d learned to recognize the symptoms and process the reaction quickly.

So quickly that Ryan didn’t even seem to notice anymore.

“Well,” he said, grinning, his hands slipping underneath my shirt, “I finally did wear you down. And now you’re mine.”

A weak smile spread across my lips, seconds before his mouth touched mine. No matter how much he loved me.

No matter how much I loved him in return.

I would never, ever belong to another person.

For as long as I lived.

***

The movie had been long forgotten, as had our clothes.

They were strung out all over the apartment, leaving a trail toward the bedroom. Little breadcrumbs of debauchery.

“Hey, it’s still early; do you want to order a pizza?” Ryan yelled from the shower as I took a long breath and snuggled deeper into the covers on our bed.

“Does it require me to get out of this bed?” I whined, moving my legs back and forth against the smooth sheets. Ryan always said it looked like I was swimming in bed when I did this.

Growing up, I never had nice sheets. Hell, sometimes there were foster homes that didn’t even give me sheets—just a blanket and a dirty bare mattress.

Luxuries like Egyptian cotton sheets were things I would never grow accustomed to, no matter how many times my legs touched them. Every night, I’d sink into bed and run my legs back and forth against the smoothness, loving the way it felt against my skin.

Like Ryan, it brought me peace and made me feel safe—two things I’d struggled with the majority of my life.

“Please, babe. I’m hungry. So very, very hungry,” he said, sticking his head out the door of the bathroom. His lips turned downward, making him look years younger. I laughed, unable to resist his boyish charm.

“Okay, okay,” I said, stretching one last time, before I rose to grab my robe.

“On second thought, I might need to work off a few more calories first,” he said, stepping out of the bathroom in just a towel. His tanned skin was slick and wet from the shower, and I couldn’t help but lick my lips as I watched a tiny drop of water skate down his chiseled chest.

Who knew nerds could be so hot?

His gaze turned heated as he stalked forward and I watched the towel drop to the floor. I stepped backward, feeling the edge of the bed hit the backs of my knees.

Our bodies met once more as his hand cupped the back of my head, tilting it upward. “I love you, Everly. I love you so much,” he whispered, touching his lips to mine. I moaned into the kiss, feeling every hard inch of him press into me.

Always aware of my needs, he was gentle as he lowered me to the bed. As my head touched the pillow, I heard the sounds of a cell phone ringing throughout the apartment.

Ryan’s head dipped forward, shaking back and forth.

“Just ignore it,” he said.

I was already pushing at his shoulders, begging him to let me answer it.

“It can’t be that important, Ev,” he said, his eyes dancing with amusement. “I’m right here.”

I rolled my eyes, grabbing my robe as I raced to the living room.

“It could be Sarah,” I said. “She had her first rehearsal tonight.”

I picked up the phone, not recognizing the number, and paused.

“Babe,” Ryan said, standing in the doorway of our room. “Come back to bed. Whatever it is can wait.”

I didn’t listen. Instead, I answered and heard the words I had begged God to never allow to come true.

“Miss Adams?” a woman said on the other end.

“Yes,” I answered.

“This is Doctor Lawrence from St. Marcus Hospital.”

My heart began to beat frantically as my hand sought out something solid to hold me up.

I knew it was coming. Like a freight train in the middle of the night, I could see the light off in the distance…I knew what was coming.

Who was coming.

“He’s awake.”

The phone hit the floor seconds before I did, and then the world went black.

About The Author

Cristina

Novelist, movie addict, and animal lover, Cristina Slough is the author of:

Till Death Us Do Part, her debut novel.

Cristina has always been a bookworm, rarely seen without a pen and paper in her hand, she loves delving into a literacy fictional world of her own.

At age of 11, her teacher told her mother that she would be wasting her life if she didn’t become an author. Throughout her teenage years, her parents spurred her on to keep writing. She later began a career in commercial real estate, working in London’s West End, a corporate bubble where she was unable to satisfy her passion to write.

On her Californian honeymoon in 2012 the bug to write was becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. After visiting Yosemite, she was inspired by the natural beauty of the land that surrounded her. Holding a special place in her heart, Yosemite would later be written into her debut novel.

She finally gave up the ‘big smoke’ when her son, Lucas, was born.

After getting to grips with her new role as a mother, she began working a psychological thriller, but she couldn’t connect to the characters she created. She ditched the manuscript and started Till Death Us Do Part.

Cristina is married to Adam, who runs a successful business; together they share their Bedfordshire home with their son, crazy white German Shepherd and three spoiled cats.

As a family, they love to travel frequently, the United States being a firm favourite.
