Those two thoughts ran in my head like a 24-hour film reel, which didn’t do anything except sink the hatchet into my chest further. Now here she was, dropped into my life like a goddamn grenade. I wanted to dismantle it and avoid the wreckage Camille’s presence would cause but it felt like a mute point. Once the grenade lands, you only had seconds before it blew. You just had to close your eyes and hoped you made it out alive with all your limbs intact.

“Nice place,” he whispered in my ear. I jumped the second I felt his warm breath brush across my skin. “I like it.” His arms slid around my stomach, as he rested his chin on my shoulder.

“It’s perfect for me,” I tilted my head back and kissed his nose. Taking him by the hand, I pulled him out to the balcony so he could see my favorite view. “This is my Heaven,” I smiled, as I stepped over to the ledge, waving my hand in the cool air.

Stone followed me over to the rail, looking down at the water, and then turned to the side and faced me. Cupping his hand over my cheek, he looked into eyes and said, “And you are my world.”

Those gorgeous baby blues widened when she saw me, but it didn’t take her long and she was running.

I widened my stance and caught her as she launched herself into my arms.

She was my world eight years ago, and now, it felt exactly the same. I wanted her so bad it hurt.

Wrapping my arms around her, I buried my nose into the crease of her neck.

“Nicolas,” she breathed into my neck.

She smelled like the sun, and felt perfect in my arms. Like she was always meant to be there.

Eight years ago, I’d made the first move. Letting her know that I was interested.

I’d waited too long, though.

I should’ve done it earlier, but I was worried about propriety.

I worried that she’d been too young, that I should wait until she was graduated.

Maybe if I’d made my move earlier, she’d have stayed.

I know I should be ecstatic about the new apartment, which I am mostly, but I am also oddly terrified about my coffee date with Henry tomorrow morning. Ever since I accepted the invitation, I have seen a different side to Henry.

He has always been polite—saying hello and goodbye when we pass—but now it is as if his confidence has grown exponentially in my presence. I am not saying we have heartfelt, deep conversations, but he is actually making eye contact now. His smile seems brighter; his eyes sparkle just a little more; and the cherry on top, the cutest, most devilish, little smirk has made an appearance on his face.

D.M. Earl resides in Northwest Indiana. An avid reader for many many years she has finally taken the jump to start writing her own stories professionally. When not reading or writing D.M can be found on her Harley Dyna hitting the road beside her husband riding his own Harley Ultra Classic.

D.M. enjoys her “kids” 4 dogs, 2 indoor cats & 3 outdoor cats. D.M. loves to be outside be it reading, writing or sitting on the deck listening to the chimes with the dogs at her feet. Also her love of gardening is reflected in numerous flower beds and a large vegetable garden.
