“Ah hell, it’s Sophia,” the cop said as he crouched next to the woman in Mason’s arms.
“How do you know her?” Mason’s head jerked up and he eyed the cop.
“She’s been looking for her brother again. He keeps running away from his foster home. She’s been searching for him the last four nights. I told her it wasn’t safe.” Mason looked down at the unconscious woman and agreed with the patrolman’s assessment.
“How much longer before the ambulance arrives?” Mason clipped out the question.
“How bad is she? What happened?” The cop nodded to where Mason’s jacket was covering Sophia’s torso.
“They just got her top off, but they cut her pretty badly on the arm. I’ve got her bandaged and most of the bleeding stopped. She’s going to need a shit-load of stitches. What’s the ETA on the ambulance?” Mason shifted her gently as he again gave the cop a penetrating stare.
“It’s about fifteen more minutes. There was a bad pile-up on the Five Freeway with fatalities. You did good work tonight. You military?” the cop asked as he assessed Mason.
“SEAL.”
“I was Navy too,” the cop said. “You okay with her while I work on getting these two assholes taken care of?” The cop nodded towards the two thugs who were sitting handcuffed in the alley and being looked after by his partner.
“I’ve got her.” Mason looked down at Sophia again ensuring she was okay. “What about the girl who made the call?”
“What girl?” the cop asked.
Mason looked around and realized the girl and his phone were long gone.
“There was another girl who looked like she’d been beaten too. She got me to come over here to help.” Mason gave the information like he was reporting to his commander.
“She must have taken off after she called for help,” the officer said.
“Oh no,” came the soft words. Mason looked down and saw green eyes clouded with worry looking up at him.
“What? Did you say something Sophia?” he asked.
“The girl is gone? She’s hurt.” It was hard to understand her through her bruised mouth.
“Settle honey, you’re hurt. You need to stay calm and rest until the ambulance comes.” Mason watched as she struggled to get up, and then cried out in pain. She collapsed against him. Fuck, it had to be her shoulder. He’d already taken off his shirt and used it as a bandage and a tourniquet earlier. He eased back the leather jacket that he had placed over her to see if it had come loose.
“Don’t move again, okay Sophia.” God, when would the ambulance get here?
“You’ve got to find the girl I think they cut her too. I’ve got to get up, I need to look for Billy. Please don’t hold me down. I need to get up, let me up,” she damn near screamed the last few words. Mason realized she was delirious. The cop looked over at him and he shook his head.
“Sophia, my name is Mason. We’re going to get you to the hospital. Do you understand me, honey?” He waited to see if she was tracking. She finally nodded. “Good, after they’re done taking care of you, you can come look for Billy again.” She relaxed a little, and he relaxed a little as well.
“And the girl? Can I look for the girl too?” she begged him with big eyes.
“Yes, you can look for the girl too.” He stroked the hair from her forehead.
“Do you promise Mason?” She tried to lift her arm to grab the front of his jacket and let out a small shriek of pain. “Why does it hurt?” He saw her start to tremble and wrapped his jacket closer around her ensuring it was snug so she couldn’t move her arms any longer.
“Are you warm now?”
“Yes. Will I be able to go to work and then look for Billy tomorrow?” It took a moment for him to understand her, and when he did it took him a few seconds to formulate a response other than ‘Hell No’.
“I think you’re going to be in the hospital for at least a couple of days.”
“No, I hate hospitals, don’t make me go to the hospital.” He watched as tears dripped down her temples into her silky blonde hair.
“Honey, you have to go you’ve been injured. A doctor has to help you.” She was trembling so bad he was worried she was going into shock.
“I can’t afford a hospital. Can you take me home?” God, she was breaking his heart.
“Let’s see what the doctor says first.”
Mason heard the siren and Sophia must have heard it too. Somehow she pushed off the heavy leather coat. “No, no ambulance, no hospital. I have to find Billy.” She tried getting up one last time and groaned as she put pressure on her cut shoulder.
“You’ve got to stay still.” He couldn’t believe the compassion this woman had, here she was bleeding and bruised, almost raped, and her entire concern was for her brother and the other girl. She was beautiful inside and out.
Just then she gripped her head where he saw a large bruise and lump forming. He saw her green eyes begin to glaze over. “Honey, stay with me.” He brushed his fingers tenderly along her cheek willing her to stay awake.
“Mason’s a nice name,” her words were slurred.
Just as the EMT’s arrived she passed out.

Excerpt
I scanned the crowd hugging the bar as I moved that way. There seemed to be mostly couples with only a few single guys, though none caught my interest. My eyes fell on a guy sitting by himself at the far end, facing me.
I drank him in slowly as I made my way over. He wore a gray suit with a red tie and filled the suit out perfectly. His hair was slightly curly, though he had it well contained. I wanted to run my fingers through it. Dark stubble dusted his chin. I knew it would feel delicious running against my skin. Everything about him from a distance was unbelievably sexy.
Then I got close enough to notice his eyes, and they were a piercing blue. Bedroom eyes, as though he were in the throes of passion. He flicked them toward me before he turned his attention back to the rum in front of him, and it seemed he looked right through me.
He was, undeniably, the sexiest man I’d ever seen, especially here at Trinity. He looked like a model, fresh from the pages of a magazine. I ordered another Sex on the Beach and his eyes lifted to meet mine again and he smirked, though only one side of his mouth came up.
I needed him tonight. He was the perfect distraction to make me forget my shitty day.
“What?” I asked as I wrapped my lips around my straw. His eyes dropped briefly to my mouth before coming back up to meet my eyes.
“Sex on the Beach? I didn’t think anyone actually drank those.” My heart skipped a beat. His voice was deep and smooth. And he had a British accent. Dear God. Accents were my weakness. It didn’t matter what kind of accent it was. There was just something about them that made me weak in the knees. Desire coursed through me. He was one sexy motherfucker. Hopefully, he’d be with me tonight.
I hummed with my lips still around the straw. His eyes dropped to my lips again and stayed there. I licked my lower lip before talking, enjoying this game. “I normally don’t, but I wanted something… tasty tonight.”
His eyes scanned my body, making me glad I wore my new red dress that hugged me in all the right places. It gave a promise of cleavage I most definitely wanted to deliver on. “Tasty,” he mused.
“Mmm hmm.” I slipped the straw between my lips again and sipped. He rewarded me with the sexy half smirk. “What brings you in to Trinity tonight?”
“I had a meeting next door and needed a drink afterwards.”
I turned so my body faced him and moved nearer until his warm breath fanned my cheek. I could hear him just fine over the music, but I wanted to be closer, so he knew exactly what I had in mind. I let the front of my body brush against his. “Was it a tough meeting?” Innuendo and desire dripped off my words. I wanted him in bed. Badly. More than any man I’d ever bedded before. I just knew he would live up to the promise in his eyes.
“You could say that.” He threw back the rest of his rum and signaled for another. The bartender, a woman, came over immediately and filled it. She leaned over the corner of the bar, pressing her overflowing breasts so they popped out of her neckline even more.
“Anything else?” she purred.
He didn’t spare her another look or word, just laid money down on the bar. The bartender glared at me before turning away. I smiled, happy that he ignored her and happy his eyes were back on me.
“I think she wanted your attention.”
His gaze slid down my body again before meeting my own. “I already have the attention of one gorgeous woman. Who needs another?”
My heart nearly burst from my chest. My panties had to be on fire with the way he looked at me. “Confident.”
“I know what I want.”
“How do you know what I want?”
His lips quirked up. “Because I saw you watching me, stalking me from across the room.”
He’d been watching me? I warmed at that thought. “Oh, really?”
His hand fell on my hip, where my skin was on fire. What would happen when he touched my bare skin? He turned to the side and pulled me between his legs, pressed me close with a hand on my lower back, so low he almost touched my ass. “I know what you want.” He ran his nose along my jaw and tingles ran across my whole body. He stopped with his lips right next to my ear. “And I know I want you.”
I wanted to pass out on the floor. He was one smooth bastard. “I don’t even know your name.”
His lips stayed by my ear, brushing it as they moved. “David.”
“David,” I repeated, mostly in a daze. His other hand abandoned his glass and joined its twin on my lower back. I was pressed so tightly against him that I felt his reaction to me. My breath caught in my throat.
I was in over my head.
“Why don’t you tell me your name?” His voice murmuring in my ear made my brain stop functioning.
“Roxie.” My voice was so breathy and full of desire, I was amazed he heard it.
“Roxie.” The way he said it was so sexy. God, this was hot. Him holding me, talking in my ear, pressed intimately against me. I put my hands around his neck and toyed with the hair that brushed the collar of his shirt.
“It’s nice to meet you, David.”
His response was to nuzzle my neck and trail light kisses there. I shivered. Actually shivered. No man had ever caused a reaction like this in me. “I’m staying in the hotel across the street. Want to come to my room?” he whispered in my ear.
“Yes,” I breathed.
He grabbed my hand and led me out of the club.

Title: Storms Over Secrets (Over #3)
Author: J.A. DeRouen
Genre: New Adult
Release Date: September 14, 2015
Cover Design: Mae I Design And Photography
Promises are lies dressed up for the party.
Secrets poison the fairest of fairy tales.
Lies stain the purest of loves.
I’ve paid the ultimate price for my choices. The tendrils of those sins bind me to my past. The remnants of my love hold me captive.
Then he walks into my life, and makes me believe in second chances. He awakens feelings in me I know I shouldn’t have. I yearn for a future without guilt. With him, I dream of a love untainted.
Regret is a far-reaching emotion. It barrels through time like a blazing comet, and its path isn’t always straight. No matter what I feel, I cannot bring myself to regret the time I’ve spent with Cain.
But it doesn’t mean I can have him.
My name is Celia Lemaire and this is my story of broken promises.
Storms Over Secrets is the third book in The Over Series, a group of interconnected standalone novels.
Celia rips the book from my hands and shelters it in her chest behind crossed arms. “Ha ha! You think you’re so funny. I especially like your squeaky rendition of the maiden,” she says, managing to look embarrassed and pissed all at once.
“Ah, you liked that, did you? I tried my best to do that fine piece of literature justice.” I cross my arms and grin smugly.
“It is, in fact, a fine piece of literature,” she says as she pulls the book from her chest and checks out the cover. “The Affairs of the Duke of Hamptonshire is very thought-provoking.”
“Oh, I’m sure it provokes something,” I say with a chuckle as I grab the book from her hands and flip to the back cover. “’Join the Duke as he ravages innocent maidens throughout London.’ I have to say—I think it’s fan-fucking-tastic that you read books like this. You just surprised me, that’s all.”
Celia releases a huge, pent-up sigh and falls next to me on the couch. She shrugs and twists her hands in her lap. “Marlo got it for me. She prefers the rock star romance books, but she thought I may appreciate something a little more … old fashioned.”
“Like English royalty?”
“Well, yeah,” she whispers, her lips turning to a slight frown and the blush from her cheeks creeping across her face and down her neck. “Since I don’t date, I don’t … well, you know … so she thought this would be a good way to release some tension.”
I resist the smile tugging on my lips because I don’t want her to think I’m making fun of her, but damn if she isn’t the cutest fucking thing I’ve ever seen.
“It seems to me this book would only serve to build up more tension, but what do I know?” I keep my voice in the most serious tone I can muster.
“She’s ordering me something for that, too,” she says before slamming her hand over her mouth, completely shocked by what she just revealed.
“Oh no you don’t,” I order, pulling her hand from her mouth. “You can’t drop a bomb and clam up on me. Celia Lemaire are you getting a—”
She turns her head, closes her eyes, and scrunches her face. The thought of Celia lying in her bed, reading a smutty book, with a battery-operated device has my dick at attention and blood coursing through my veins at high speed. I want to throw my hands up in the air, hollering, “I volunteer as tribute!” This little project has my name written all over it, but she just doesn’t know it yet.
“Uh uh,” I say as I tug her chin up and make her meet my eyes. I continue my questioning with a scandalous whisper. “Are you getting a … vibrator?”
“Ugh! If there is a God, will He please swallow me up into the ground to avoid this embarrassment? I think I’m going to die,” she cries as she covers her face with both hands and nosedives into my lap.
Watch your aim, little fairy, or you’re about to get WAY more than you bargained for!
I stealthily shift my position to keep her from bumping my boner. It’s been only a day since my vow to man up and make my move. But I don’t think this situation could be any more perfect. Celia, head in my lap, already primed with a lady boner thanks to Duke Hamptonshire?
Thank you, universe. I owe you for this one.

I leap forward, grab his hand, and place the transmitter in his palm. He looks down at it, and I run across the street. I plant myself against the building on the far corner, the hard hot gray stone scratching my naked back in the night heat.I’m way across the street from him now, cars streaming between us. I point at my ear with the Bluetooth receiver implanted inside.
He puts the transmitter up to his mouth. My heart is nearly pounding out of my chest. This is it. This is me putting my head on the chopping block.
He can say “Go home.” That’s all he needs to do. He can just tell me to go and I will. That’s the bargain. That’s the agreement. I always keep my agreements.
He raises the transmitter to his mouth.
I clench my teeth, my eyes wide open. I’m breathing hard, my hands locked behind me.
I will do whatever he says, I remind myself, I will do whatever he says.
Even if he tells me to go home.
He’s about to speak, his face still locked in that frozen visage and half-smile. Then he laughs, turns sideways, raises the transmitter up to his mouth and says, “Let’s play.”
I nod my head.
Oh my God!
Yes! The fire starts anew down below. He’s playing. I’ve gotten him to play! That was the hardest step.
“My sweet dirty whore,” he says, “you’re naked, aren’t you?”
Wow, kudos to the body paint artist. Even the great Lukas Thorn can’t really tell that I’m naked.
“You realize what you’ve set yourself up for? You’re going to have to prove that to me, you know.”
I nod.
“You’re going to have to prove that to me in public.”
Oh God! The very thought sends me into delirium. Yes, I will. Yes, I’ll do anything. In front of anybody. To please you. Yes, I will. I so want you. I so want you to tell me to do horribly nasty things in front of other people. I so will do anything you ask. All you have to do is command me.
I am the owner of a foul-mouthed dirty mind, a living contradiction who enjoys pushing hot sexy fun to the edges of normalcy … while telling the stories of inspiring characters who rise above personal challenges to live happy and fulfilled lives.

I was the selfish bastard acting as if I was the only one taking a risk. The same scenario had played out in my mind and it was the reason I avoided dating all these years. It was never worth putting my kids through the disappointment they had enough shit luck with their own mother. But what if a woman truly fell for me and the kids and I was the one to walk away? What if I bailed? In the end Finn and Max would always be mine, always be with me. Where would that leave a woman like that?
Jules was a woman like that.
She wasn’t most women.
Fuck, her risk suddenly seemed greater.
Bringing me back to the reason I was a selfish bastard.
Without hesitation, I nuzzled back into the same position against her neck but this time I wrapped my arms around her center and pulled her against my chest. I needed to make this right. I wanted her to feel my heart racing. “How about we take our time and give each other the chance to say yes. Just give me the heads up whenever we need that minute. Yeah?”
Her arms tightened over mine. “Yeah.”
I kissed my now favorite spot on her neck again then said, “Now how about we eat some breakfast beautiful, so you can shower and we can start our weekend. Or is there a minimum hour before you take off your slippers that I should know about?” She moved so we were face-to-face, her eyes now honey caramel. Damn she was beautiful.
“They’re not slippers, they’re Uggs.”
Stubborn.
And definitely not most women.

Yep. That’s an “s.” There are two of us!
We’re East coast girls separated by Long Island Sound who met in Physician Assistant School and have been besties ever since. We can safely say that thirteen miles of water does not get in the way because we talk or text, no exaggeration, at least 150 times a day. No, really, we do—about everything and nothing. Shockingly, we never (we mean never) run out of things to say. Umm, ever. We definitely laugh A LOT and we’re a tad sarcastic. And if we’re being totally honest, one or two people might have, on occasion, used our names and ‘dramatic’ in the same sentence. But it’s hard to trust the sources since they married us.
It only took twelve years, two husbands, five kids, two dogs, and a two-week vacation in Cape Cod later to decide the romance world needed a splash of medicine. Write what you know.
So you can easily find us at 4 o’clock on Bank Street beach with a glass of cold Prosecco brainstorming. And guaranteed if we bump into you, literally, it’s only because our iPhones are glued to our hands (totally out of our control) either writing or editing our next novel (and yes, it is possible to do from your iPhone, we mastered it … damn those straight quotations).
When we are not working on our book or reading the latest angsty romance on our kindles, you basically name it and we have it going on. Soccer, lacrosse, golf, swimming, dance, gymnastics, football, chess, baseball, basketball, skiing, ice skating, school, homework, and more school.
Oh yeah, did we forget to mention our careers in medicine?
Needless to say, we realized fast that something had to go, so we opted for sleep. It’s completely overrated (yet so AMAZING) and delirium makes everything funnier. Good thing we share a brain and can pretty much complete each other’s sentences (definitely weird, we know), otherwise it might have taken us two years to write Beautifully Awake rather than one.
So that’s our story, who we are … just add AUTHORS to the list!
