~ Chapter 1 ~

Sam

Ten days without Nathalie. Ten days in a dark world with no purpose. It’s been ten days too long staying in this empty town, but I don’t have much of a choice. I had to get my shit together before I up and left. I think if I would have driven out of town right after the funeral, they’d have called the cops on me. I have to act normal, pretend I’m okay, to convince them I’ve moved on.

My black bag sits in the middle of the empty room, regurgitating piles of dark clothing. It’s the only bag I’ve allowed myself to pack. Secretly, I’ve been emptying the house. My parents know it’s on the market, I’ve left it up to them to finish the sale and deal with it. It’s about the only thing they’ve ever been supportive of—my leaving for good.

After the funeral, everyone refused to leave me at home alone. Despite the fact that this is my home, the one place that still has signs of Nat in it, they infiltrated it with their presence and hovered.

Today’s the first day I’ve woken up alone. Oddly enough it’s also the last day I’ll be here. I get up off the bed I used to share with Nat and shove the clothes into my bag and zip it up. This little duffle bag is going to be my one possession until I get wherever I’m heading.

I still haven’t figured that out. The downstairs kitchen smells like burnt chicken and lemon-scented candles. Nathalie had been making dinner before she came to pick me up. I refuse to remove the food or change anything in the house. The movers or my parents can do it. I don’t need to.

On the kitchen counter sits a brown paper bag that the hospital gave me. Well, they didn’t give it to me. I hadn’t been allowed to leave my room yet, the night it all went to shit. They wanted to make sure that I didn’t have bleeding on my brain so they were forcing me to spend the night.

Even after my rehab stint, I’d never felt so helpless, so confined. Petey and Sarah refused to leave my side despite the fact that I kept lashing out at them. I had just fixed my relationship with Petey after our falling out from high school. He was able to move past the tragedy with his sister, Sarah and let me back in his life. Sarah always forgave me for the accident, but things were looking up. All my relationships were moving in a positive manner. I remember in the hospital telling Petey what a terrible person he was, and jabbing Sarah with my words of how she’d be settling with her fiancé.

Like me pushing them away would make things better. I hate that I felt the need to assault them with my words. I hate that I made the already tragic situation worse. But at that moment, I was in shock and hated everything around me, mostly myself.

But it kept getting worse and worse. Her parents showed up in about an hour flat. I wasn’t allowed to leave my room, but I recognized her mom’s voice from what I had heard through the phone numerous times. The second I heard it, I almost thought it was Nat; my brain playing tricks on me, teasing me, torturing me. I’d never hear Nat’s voice again.

The orderly’s packed Nat’s belongings in a small Ziploc bag. I pick it up off the ground, knowing there’s only one small item inside. I won’t part ways with it. The last chip of my soul refuses to let it go. I shove it into the side compartment of my bag and zip it up tight, double checking to make sure there’s no way it could fall out.

After deciding to leave the East Coast and place as much mileage between me, and my friends, and family, as possible, I knew I couldn’t ditch the truck. Despite needing the fucking thing gone from my life forever, I can’t afford to get a new car and have enough left over from what I’ve saved to live off of.

But first chance I get, it’s gone. It smells like her. Sugar and flowers.

I’ve been meeting with Karen every day since the night Nat was stolen from me. I’m not supposed to call it anything other than an accident, but in my eyes, it could have been prevented. This was no accident. This was a life-changing moment that will forever affect me.

I pull my truck into the office parking lot and cut the ignition. Karen doesn’t work in town—I met her while in rehab two hours away—but she’s been using one of her colleague’s offices to meet with me. She said it was important that I had support. She’d met my parents numerous times and deemed them not responsible to care for me. I can’t blame her. I’d been in recovery twice and both times, they weren’t around.

There’s always this nagging pulling in my stomach before I meet with Karen. I know it’s nerves like she’s going to uncover a deeply-rooted, hidden secret I’m not ready to hear. Not that I think I have secrets because I don’t. I’m a recovering drug addict who’s followed by a curse where I hurt those I love. That’s pretty much the bottom line, although if I said any of that out loud, Karen would scold me for days. Maybe I will say it today since it’s my last day to meet with her before I leave.

I don’t bother knocking or ringing the bell. Ten days of the same thing over and over, I’ve become used to the routine. I walk past the staircase and knock on the door of the office. Karen yells for me to come in, so I do.

“Hi, Sam!” She smiles at me, flashing her teeth as she stands behind the desk and reaches over. I take her hand and shake it. She picks up her green-rimmed glasses and crumbled note pad and walks around the desk. She sits in an identical chair to mine beside me.

“How are you?” I ask her, crossing my arms over my chest.

“Fine, how are you today?”

“I’m good.”

“Is that because you’re leaving or because you genuinely feel good?” She narrows her eyes. That’s the problem with meeting someone frequently and having them know you; you can’t trick them.

I shrug in response.

“Instead of talking about you today, I wanted to leave you with some knowledge to help you in the future. I know hashing out your insecurities is good, and I love seeing you have a break through. But since you’re leaving, I’m worried you won’t understand the feelings you are going to experience. So, I’ll give you some information to help along the steps today. Sound good?” She flips the page of her notebook, making a crinkling sound as it flies over.

“Whatever you want to do,” I tell her, because honestly, I couldn’t care less. An hour or two more and I’ll be out of here. And an hour or two more after that, and I’ll be free from all of this pressure to be okay.

“I know we touched on the stages of grief before and I had you guess where you were, so I want to start there. Have you given it anymore thought?”

“Yeah, I still think it’s stupid. That chart, those seven feelings don’t really define what I’m feeling. I’ve accepted that she’s gone, but that doesn’t mean I’m over it. I’m not in shock…I know she’s gone. I feel her absence on a daily basis. So, I don’t fucking know where I am.”

“The stages are just a guideline, Sam. I’ve told you this.”

“I know…and it still doesn’t make it any easier.”

“Well, I want to go over them again so you relate to what you’re feeling. I agree that you’re not in the first stage anymore. The first stage you experienced in the hospital. You refused to see people, wouldn’t admit she was gone.” I squeeze my fist so tight my knuckles bloom white. Don’t remember her, I chant to myself, stop thinking of the hospital. No more memories today.

“The second stage is pain, sometimes guilt. Your life is going to be chaotic, a little crazy. You’ll feel guilty, kind of like your curse belief. But it hurts, a lot. The third stage is bargaining. Here is when you’re going to ask questions like, ‘Why me? Why her?’. You’ll probably lash out at people, get frustrated. If you begin to feel this way, try to tamp it down, find something that will calm you down. You don’t want to push away those around you.

“Let’s see…” She flips another page in her notebook and shoves the end of the pen in her mouth, chewing the plastic part. “The next is depression. With your added history of substance abuse, this is definitely a pronounced concern. It is not a question of if you will experience depression from this life-changing event, it’s a question of when. And honestly, Sam, you will need to seek help. Wherever you end up, find a therapist, give them my number, and have them call me. Depression is a legitimate disease and you, nobody, should have to live through the loneliness, despair, emptiness, and unworthiness alone. You understand? You find someone to help you.” I nod. “Say it.”

“I understand. I’ll get help.”

“Swear it to me. When you end up where you think you’ll stay, if you feel the signs of depression, you’ll talk to someone. Please, Sam. You know I care about you. I would hate to see you in the condition we met in. Okay?”

“Okay, Karen.” I widen my eyes at her pushiness. “I get it. I can’t do it alone.”

“It’s not that you can’t, Sam. You shouldn’t have to. You deserve better.” She shakes her head, blinking away tears. “Okay, after that…you’ll hit the upward spiral. You’ll start feeling just a little better every day. Then you’ll start to reconstruct your life, fix things, change things, and move forward. The last stage is acceptance. It’s pretty self-explanatory. But once you’re here, you’ll see hope in the future, understanding, and crave the normal.”

“And what? Nathalie’ll just be a distant memory?”

“Of course not. You’re stages of grief have nothing to do with her memory. And just because you accept that she’s gone doesn’t mean you forget her. In fact, I urge you to remember her, remember the good things. In a healthy way of course.”

“Of course.” I nod, mocking her.

“I also want to mention something. The chances of you relapsing at a time like this are astronomical. I think the rates are at about fifty percent during times of stress and within the first year of sobriety. However, I need to explain what will happen if you were to relapse and go back to cocaine.

“Because your body has no cocaine systemically any longer, your chances of dying during a relapse skyrocket. I’m sure you were used to injesting large amounts at a time. If you were to take what you were taking at your peak using time, you’d most likely die, right?”

I nod. My heart spikes and my palms sweat. It’s too real. But even talking about it makes me want to try it just to remember the feels. I miss the high. I’ve been low for so long now.

“Odds are, someone you will meet uses cocaine. It’s the second most used drug in the country. But you’re a strong man, Sam. I believe you won’t go back to using. And I hope you’ll find what you’re looking for.” Heavy tears slide down her reddened cheeks.

“Why are you crying?” I ask her in a voice that can only be described as emotionless. I clear my throat, holding it in.

“I’m going to miss you,” she blurts out. “I know you’ve been through hell and back. But I’ve enjoyed getting to know you, Sam. I hope I’ve helped you in even the slightest way possible.” She places her notepad beside her and leans forward. Her arms circle my neck and she tugs me against her. She squeezes and then pushes me back.

“You’ve helped me,” I say. “You’ve helped me a lot, Karen.”

“You have my number, right? You have everything? Money?”

“I don’t need your money, Karen. I have enough to get me across the country and be fine. Don’t worry about me, okay?”

“Of course I’ll worry about you!” She slaps my knee. “You’re a great man, Sam. You’ll make someone happy. First, you have to find your own way. And stop worrying about this curse. You aren’t cursed, I swear. You have your new therapist, so call. That’s an order.”

“Got it.” My throat swells a little bit, tastes salty. Truth is, I’ll miss Karen. I’ll miss all of them. But this is for the best. I have to separate myself. This is for their own good. Damn, I’m doing this for them!

I slam my lips together, blink once to stop my emotions, stand, and leave the office for good. I won’t be coming back here. And I won’t see these people again.

Excerpt

I hear a very clear and distinct set of heavy footsteps advancing towards us. Whoever it is, isn’t panicked like the rest of us. He or she (no it was definitely a he) is moving calmly and very deliberately towards our direction. I experience a brief moment of alien-like movement in my stomach warning me of something. I’m not sure what. Maybe to be on guard or perhaps to run. Suddenly I feel five very warm, strong, and calloused fingers grasp my upper left arm and pull me up on my feet.

“Stand up,” the deep voice orders with a rumble. His lips just inches away from my ear. His breath smells of peppermint, chocolate and cognac. A yummy mixture. It’s familiar. Reminds me of Christmas.

His distinctive voice reverberates throughout my body, from the top of my head to the tips of my toes, and then settles in as if making a home in between my legs. I’m shocked at my body’s reaction and frankly embarrassed. Typically I would never blindly follow the commands of a stranger, but this isn’t a usual circumstance I find myself in. So for once I decide not to over think things (like he may be a serial killer) and instead just follow his lead.

With his hand still firmly clasping my upper arm, he notices that my feet are unsteady and quickly adjusts himself to place his other hand loosely around my middle to balance me as I stand. His massive hand almost spans the entire length of my torso and although my clothing serves as a barrier, to me it feels like I have nothing on. His thumb nearly grazes my breast, which sends my nipples into a hard alert, while his pinky finger comes dangerously close to the waistband of my panties. I am so overwhelmed by all the sensations of him touching me, that my body probably feels heavy to him, as I inadvertently sway slightly forward and allow him to bear more of my weight. My heaviness doesn’t seem to be an issue though, as he effortlessly guides me upwards onto my feet with one sweeping movement.

“Easy.” He murmurs softly by my ear.

Even with all hell breaking loose in the club, that one word, the stranger’s raspy voice, and his unforgettable hands are all I can concentrate on. His touch feels personal, careful, and intimate, as if we already know each other or as if we are definitely about to. As he continues to direct me, his commands all of a sudden turn somewhat clipped, almost like he is annoyed with me for some unknown reason.

“She with you?”

“Yes.”

“Grab her hand too.”

“Wait I-” I start to protest. His terse tone throwing me off.

“Grab her.” He orders again.

As he continues to hold onto me, to help me keep my balance, I reach down to grab Sloan’s arms and lift her up with me. “Come on Sloan.”

“Walk.” Is all the stranger says next.

And we do.

I step outside the box again to enjoy a new author. Lisa Blakeney is a great writer. I was very pleased with her new read Cousins. You’re taken into a story of two people that are only related due to family members getting married.

Elizabeth is dealing and overcoming an attack in her apartment. Then she is left heartbroken after her boyfriend ups and leaves. Roman on the other hand is the one night stand guy, never giving more than one night of fun. He has grown up from when Elizabeth met him back when she was six years old and he play a very mean trick on her. Elizabeth is very strong willed, not taking crap for the most part from most people. Roman all alpha male, moody, knows what he wants and will get it one way or another.

Elizabeth and Roman light the pages up. You are going to be laughing at the banter that is exchanged between the two of them. They are ready to rip each other’s throats out one minute, and then they are ripping each other’s cloths of then next.

It did take me a little time to get in to the story and really enjoy it. I am glad it gave it the few extra chapters because when this one takes off it takes off. Great story and the cliffhanger is the best! Looking forward to the next book in this series!!!

“Ah hell, it’s Sophia,” the cop said as he crouched next to the woman in Mason’s arms.

“How do you know her?” Mason’s head jerked up and he eyed the cop.

“She’s been looking for her brother again. He keeps running away from his foster home. She’s been searching for him the last four nights. I told her it wasn’t safe.” Mason looked down at the unconscious woman and agreed with the patrolman’s assessment.

“How much longer before the ambulance arrives?” Mason clipped out the question.

“How bad is she? What happened?” The cop nodded to where Mason’s jacket was covering Sophia’s torso.

“They just got her top off, but they cut her pretty badly on the arm. I’ve got her bandaged and most of the bleeding stopped. She’s going to need a shit-load of stitches. What’s the ETA on the ambulance?” Mason shifted her gently as he again gave the cop a penetrating stare.

“It’s about fifteen more minutes. There was a bad pile-up on the Five Freeway with fatalities. You did good work tonight. You military?” the cop asked as he assessed Mason.

“SEAL.”

“I was Navy too,” the cop said. “You okay with her while I work on getting these two assholes taken care of?” The cop nodded towards the two thugs who were sitting handcuffed in the alley and being looked after by his partner.

“I’ve got her.” Mason looked down at Sophia again ensuring she was okay. “What about the girl who made the call?”

“What girl?” the cop asked.

Mason looked around and realized the girl and his phone were long gone.

“There was another girl who looked like she’d been beaten too. She got me to come over here to help.” Mason gave the information like he was reporting to his commander.

“She must have taken off after she called for help,” the officer said.

“Oh no,” came the soft words. Mason looked down and saw green eyes clouded with worry looking up at him.

“What? Did you say something Sophia?” he asked.

“The girl is gone? She’s hurt.” It was hard to understand her through her bruised mouth.

“Settle honey, you’re hurt. You need to stay calm and rest until the ambulance comes.” Mason watched as she struggled to get up, and then cried out in pain. She collapsed against him. Fuck, it had to be her shoulder. He’d already taken off his shirt and used it as a bandage and a tourniquet earlier. He eased back the leather jacket that he had placed over her to see if it had come loose.

“Don’t move again, okay Sophia.” God, when would the ambulance get here?

“You’ve got to find the girl I think they cut her too. I’ve got to get up, I need to look for Billy. Please don’t hold me down. I need to get up, let me up,” she damn near screamed the last few words. Mason realized she was delirious. The cop looked over at him and he shook his head.

“Sophia, my name is Mason. We’re going to get you to the hospital. Do you understand me, honey?” He waited to see if she was tracking. She finally nodded. “Good, after they’re done taking care of you, you can come look for Billy again.” She relaxed a little, and he relaxed a little as well.

“And the girl? Can I look for the girl too?” she begged him with big eyes.

“Yes, you can look for the girl too.” He stroked the hair from her forehead.

“Do you promise Mason?” She tried to lift her arm to grab the front of his jacket and let out a small shriek of pain. “Why does it hurt?” He saw her start to tremble and wrapped his jacket closer around her ensuring it was snug so she couldn’t move her arms any longer.

“Are you warm now?”

“Yes. Will I be able to go to work and then look for Billy tomorrow?” It took a moment for him to understand her, and when he did it took him a few seconds to formulate a response other than ‘Hell No’.

“I think you’re going to be in the hospital for at least a couple of days.”

“No, I hate hospitals, don’t make me go to the hospital.” He watched as tears dripped down her temples into her silky blonde hair.

“Honey, you have to go you’ve been injured. A doctor has to help you.” She was trembling so bad he was worried she was going into shock.

“I can’t afford a hospital. Can you take me home?” God, she was breaking his heart.

“Let’s see what the doctor says first.”

Mason heard the siren and Sophia must have heard it too. Somehow she pushed off the heavy leather coat. “No, no ambulance, no hospital. I have to find Billy.” She tried getting up one last time and groaned as she put pressure on her cut shoulder.

“You’ve got to stay still.” He couldn’t believe the compassion this woman had, here she was bleeding and bruised, almost raped, and her entire concern was for her brother and the other girl. She was beautiful inside and out.

Just then she gripped her head where he saw a large bruise and lump forming. He saw her green eyes begin to glaze over. “Honey, stay with me.” He brushed his fingers tenderly along her cheek willing her to stay awake.

“Mason’s a nice name,” her words were slurred.

Just as the EMT’s arrived she passed out.

I turn and see HIM, I realise he is the one watching me. I don’t know why I don’t feel creeped out, but I don’t. I put a towel around me and find myself walking towards him. I need to know who he is.

The closer I get to him the more of him I can see. He is in his swim shorts and no top. His body is so beautiful. All I can do is look into his eyes, they are the most beautiful blue colour. They are turquoise and are like pools that are drawing me in.

“Hi” I say, trying not to blush “I’m …”

“Cassie” he says. “I know who you are, I was hoping to bump into you tonight. I’m Jordan,” he says with the biggest and brightest grin I’ve ever seen.

“Hi Jordan. Why were you hoping to bump into me?” I stupidly say to him. He’s making me lose control of myself. I feel really nervous and look down at the floor.

“Erm I wanted to get to know you. I feel like I’m drawn to you for some reason. I know that sounds stupid, but everywhere I look I can only see you.” He puts his finger under my chin and makes me look into his eyes. “Even when I have my eyes closed, all I can see is you. Sorry if that sounds a bit stalkerish.” He laughs, but I can see that he’s embarrassed about showing me his feelings.

I laugh with him because I really don’t know what to say. I have to try and say something though because he is looking at me with those mesmerising eyes. “Yeah it does sound a bit stalkerish,” I laugh. “But I’m flattered and yes, I have seen you around at school and I did wonder who you were too. So we are both a bit stalkerish.” We both start laughing.

“I’m going to go and dry off and get some more clothes on. Then maybe we can grab a drink,” I say really quickly so Jordan doesn’t see I’m waffling on a bit. He is making me nervous but I don’t want to stop talking to him. I turn and walk back into the house, towards the stairs to go upstairs to the bedroom to find my dress. I can feel him following me and I smile to myself. I am a little bit nervous though that I am in the house with him and my friends are outside, but he makes me feel safe.

“That’s sounds great, although I don’t mind if you don’t put anymore clothes on” he says grinning at me. He is following closely behind me, I was right.

“No, seriously I would feel better if I had more clothes on.” I laugh as I’m heading up the stairs.

Holly James is trying to move on with her life, but it’s not easy. She can’t stand to be touched by anyone, not even her own family. She is a lost broken shell of the person that she used to be. She realizes that shutting everyone out is much easier then opening up and letting someone hurt her.

Drew Walker is no prince charming. He doesn’t care about anyone but himself and has no intention of changing. He loves the life of excitement and entitlement that comes with being the lead singer of a band, and has no plans to get tied down anytime soon.
When these two meet there is an immediate chemistry. The thing that surprises Holly is that she can tolerate his touch. He makes her feel like herself once again and gives her the freedom and comfort she has been desperate to find. On the other hand he is self-centered, egotistical, and everything that she should stay away from.
What happens when the one person who can save you might also be the person who can break you?
“There was something about Drew, but I had no idea what it was. He was self-centered, cocky, and definitely not prince charming. Maybe that’s why I liked him though. Maybe I didn’t want to be saved by the handsome prince. Maybe I wanted to be corrupted by the evil king.”

20961-event2bbanners-excerpt
He stands up fast and begins to pace the small room, “I don’t want everyone to know, not that it matters now. I wasn’t jumping for joy when I won because I didn’t want to win.” He doesn’t want to win?

“What? Why not?”

“Because I don’t want to have to fucking be doing this! It’s not something I do for fun; it’s something I do because it is a damn necessity. I would love to be like you guys and be able to hang out, enjoy school, and not need to worry about how I was going to pay for my next semester, but I’m not!” He is yelling now and half of me wishes I had never made the decision to come back here.

I don’t know what to say. I guess I just assumed he was fighting to fulfill some masculine, testosterone-fueled need to hit something. I stand up and walk over to him. He has his back to me, but I decide to be brave and put my hand on him, hoping to comfort him in whatever way I can. “I’m sorry you are in this position. Maybe it would be easier on you if you weren’t hiding it, though. Everyone cares about you and they aren’t going to judge you and turn their backs on you for something like this. It may not seem like much coming from me, since we don’t know each other well, but I’m here if you ever need someone to talk to.”

He spins around, and before I know it, he spins me around and has me backed up against the wall. He slams his hands on either side of my head, trapping my hands with them, and then crushes his mouth to mine. I let out a gasp of surprise and he takes advantage, slipping his tongue into my mouth. His kiss is so frenzied and urgent, so full of need. It’s unlike anything I have ever experienced in my life. I’m not innocent—I’ve been kissed by plenty of guys—but never like this.

He’s taking complete control over me and dominating every sense of my being. He pulls back a little, biting down on my lower lip, causing me to moan with a mix of pleasure and pain. I open my eyes to see him staring at me with such desire my insides warm. Before I know what’s happening, he releases my hands and speeds out the door.

This is the second book by S. Donahue that I have had the privilege to read.  After the first book I read and enjoyed I wanted to read more of her work. Let’s say I was not let down. This is a great story and one that you will fall in total love with.

Brad is the men of all men. When he loves he loves hard. Caring, devoted and willing to give everything when it comes down to it.  He has been affected by his dad’s death not really wanting to face what is cost him in life and place the blame on someone else. He meets Gia, knows there is something special there but not sure what that something is.

Gia is a well-rounded attorney that is very independent. She has suffered some pretty hurtful things in the past that has forced her to push everything in to her career.

This two take off and keep you entertained through the whole book.

Light fun and fast read.

Looking forward to Gia’s sister’s story next!!!
