Synopsis

I’m not sure I know what to think of the girl I’ve searched for since I was thirteen; she isn’t exactly how I remembered her.

I’m twenty-five, a guy and a virgin. Yep, you read that right; I’m still a virgin. Why you ask? Because I met the woman of my dreams when she was still a girl and I’ve been searching for her ever since we met. I’ve saved myself for her, as I believe she saved herself for me. Why again? Because I will love her, like she will love me, when we finally meet, again. I’d like to think it was that simple, but I don’t really know if she will love me. I only hope she will. If she doesn’t, she won’t be the right girl for me, because like I said, I’ve been saving myself for the woman of my dreams. I just don’t know where she is…but I won’t stop searching until I find her. That is my mission. My quest.

The Quest of Perkins Vale © L.B. Dunbar

Perk walked to his bed and sat with a plop on the edge. It was going to be smaller than the king size bed in his home in the city, but if I thought about it, we slept close to each other every night when we were together. The smaller mattress would make no difference.

“It seems that everywhere I turn, someone knew you. Someone knew where you were. I’ve been searching for you for twelve years, and I was the only one who didn’t know where you were, while everyone else did.”

“Twelve years?” I asked, as I came to sit next to him.

He rubbed a hand down his face and told me about a rainy night long ago in a decrypted home. He claimed he saw me, with Elaine and Elliott, at the side of my sick uncle’s bed. It seemed a mystery to me that the same man who found me in the tent, had been the boy I scolded outside my uncle’s manor house. It seemed a bit like destiny that he kept finding me, although I didn’t remember him as clearly. He was a boy at a confusing time. He was a teenager at a time of dismay. Now, he was a man.

When his tale was complete, he looked a bit exhausted as if the weight of years got heavier instead of lifting off his shoulders. I was barely dressed as I left the bathroom in one of his large t-shirts. He undressed down to his boxers, which had become his custom and he covered us in his teenage bed.

I had to giggle as I snuggled up to face him.

“How many girls did you have in this thing?” I laughed, a bit bitterly with hope that the number wasn’t large.

“None,” he said immediately.

“Come on. No high school crush? Summer love? Stolen night or afternoon while your mother was away?”

“No one ever. In this bed.”

His words stunned me. Visions of Perk in hallways with women pinned to the wall and barrooms with girls on his lap filled my mind.

“Other beds, huh?” I questioned in disbelief. I’d seen his room the first night I stayed. It was obvious someone had slept there with him.

“No girl. No bed. Ever,” he repeated, staring up at the ceiling. He had one hand braced behind his head and the other lay between us, which wasn’t our customary position. I lay on my side, watching his body grow rigid with each part of my inquisition.

“I saw your room that first night. You’d had a girl there. Maybe not to sleep over, but someone had been there.” Bitterness was fully in my mouth at this point, as I envisioned someone else sleeping with him in the same manner we slept.

“No one in my bed. Before you,” he said, blowing out air. I could see his chest rising and falling exaggeratedly. If I didn’t know better, I thought he might be trying to calm himself as if he were about to explode at me.

“Perk, honest, it’s okay. I get it. You’re a rock star. Women have thrown themselves at you. It happens, right?” I wasn’t as convinced as I tried to sound, as if this was okay with me.

“Hollister, drop it. Please. There’s been no one else.”

“It’s fine, don’t tell me. I’m sure you’ve lost count,” I said snippily. Suddenly he turned to face me and the old mattress jiggled under his weight.

“I’m only going to say this once; one more time. There’s never been another woman in my bed. There’s never been any woman in any other bed with me. There hasn’t been any one else.”

From the glow of the moonlight outside his unshaded window, I saw his chocolaty eyes sparkle. His face was firm as he emphasized each word.

“Perkins, it’s okay…”

“Hollister, drop it,” he interrupted.

“I don’t need to know. I’m just…”

“I’m a virgin,” he blurted. The words hung in the darkened room.

My attention quickly got diverted when a bell chimed over the front door and my eyes lifted.

No.

Panic roared to life. There were a million coffee shops dotting the city streets of Seattle and he came here. Why did I have such bad luck? Sliding my novel in front of my face, I slunk down into the chair as if that would render me invisible.

Do not look over here

Do not look over here

I begged silently for reprieve. Heavy footsteps thumped against the floor, drawing closer. When they stopped, my heart did as well. The scent of Chanel Number Five confused my senses.

“Camille?”

Matthew stood next to my table dressed in a pair of dark washed jeans and a button up shirt, opened at the collar. The glasses he normally wore were gone, and I much preferred he’d worn them. His stormy grey eyes were discomfiting.

“You smell like a woman,” I blurted in greeting.

A Cheshire cat-like smile spread across his face. “Is that so?”

I met his smile with a scowl. The way he talked, in questions, dancing around whatever secrets he held up his sleeve, made want to slap him — hard.

“Yes, that’s so.”

Without asking if he could sit down, Matthew pulled out a chair and folded himself into the seat. Stretching out his long legs, he crossed his ankles and leaned back.

My eyes rolled. “Please get comfortable. Stay a while,” I said sarcastically.

Another powerful hit of perfume made my head ache. With nobody behind me, my chair scooted a safe two inches away from him. I wished the windows were open though. Matthew’s odd choice of deodorant was stinking up the place.

His eyebrows bunched together. “Is it that bad?”

“It’s as if you rolled in a vat of flowers.”

“I took a shower after.”

“After?”

Matthew smirked. After sex — that’s what he was hinting. Envy stabbed me in the solar plexus but I quickly batted it away. It’s not like I wanted to tie Matthew to the bedposts and have my wicked way with him.

“You’re disgusting,” I remarked.

“Why? Sex is perfectly healthy and natural.” His pupils darkened. “Not to mention fun. Don’t you find it fun, Camille?”

The rest of the day passes quickly and then I’m on my way home, when I get in I start preparing dinner so that when Felix comes home his dinner is ready. He likes his dinner to be ready on the table, he doesn’t like to wait. We sit down to dinner and there is a silence between us, I decide to say something. “Felix are you ok? You’re very quiet tonight.”

He stops eating, puts his knife and fork down and looks me in the eye and says “You looked like a tart today when you were giving the presentation, all the lads were staring, your top was too low!” He sneers at me.

“What? I don’t believe you just said that to me, that is so hurtful.” I start sobbing. I can’t believe he would speak to me that way, he never has before.

“I can’t believe you went to an interview dressed like that, of course they’ll give you the job dressed like that, they probably think they can look down your top everyday.” He looks so angry.

“It was a lady that interviewed me.” I say during sobs. “There is nothing wrong with my top and what gives you the right to say that to me anyway?” Obviously that was the wrong thing to say as he gets up from his chair and strides over to my side of the table, grabs my ponytail and pulls it so hard that I have to look up at him. “YOU are my wife and no one else will look at you with lust in their eyes, only I’m allowed to do that.” He lets go of my hair, walks back to his chair, sits down and resumes eating his dinner. I’m sitting there with my mouth open staring at him with tears running down my face. I don’t know what to say, so I just sit there. He looks at me then says “Go and wipe your face you look a mess.”

I get up from the table, go out of the room to the downstairs toilet and sob silently. What the hell just happened out there? I clean my face, then go and sit back at the table. I’m not hungry now so I just sit there with my head bowed down. I don’t want to look at him!

“So babe, tell me about the interview, how did it go?” he says still eating his dinner. Is he serious? “Come on tell me!” he’s starting to shout!

So I tell him about Blue Eye and Helen, the HR Manager and about the three stages of interviews. I tell him I’m really excited about this job and that I loved the company. He sits there nodding his head at me and asking a few questions. “I have another interview with Clifton Associates, a Facilities Company tomorrow, the job looks good too, but I think today’s job would be better all round” I say waiting for him to say something.

“Sounds good, let’s see what happens, good luck tomorrow” he says. He stands up, puts his plate in the sink and says “I’m going to watch TV” and walks out the room.
He’s being so weird, normally the two of us would do the dishes and chat about the day and what’s ahead for the week.

“A warm shiver trails from the very top of my arms all the way to my toes as his hands gently move to hold my shoulders. Slowly, they trail down, rising my skin in their wake. My breath is held and everything inside me springs tight when his body presses just enough for mine to absorb his warmth and to feel the firmness that I recently learned is part of him. He brushes my hair over my shoulder with his chin. A tidal wave of heat spirals below my waist once his warm, minty breath hovers closely, and his bristled cheek softly grazes my flushed one.

He halts for a long moment.

“What are you doing?” I croakily breathe.

“Waiting for you to stop me.” His voice is rasp and low and reaches to every single part of my alert body.

My heart and mind speed at a hazardous velocity while I struggle for my next move. The last thing I want is for him to stop. I don’t say a word but blatantly press back against him, resting my head on his drumming chest. It’s less of a spoken consent and more of a silent agreement. Whatever is starting between us is happening nonetheless, with my undeniable blessing.”

Forever Winter by Christopher Scott Wagoner ♥ Promo Blitz

Standard
Forever Winter Final
Summary Forever Winter:

Steve Borgia should be happy that Autumn Winters is back in his life. A drunken brawl with a prostitute has cost Steve his teaching job, though, forcing him to flip burgers at the Greece Hut. Plus, Steve never knows if, or when, Autumn’s going to skip town again.

Fed up with his fast food career, Steve decides to follow in his famous father’s footsteps and return to the wrestling ring. The money’s good, but the new job is taking its toll on both his body and his relationship with Autumn. Even if they get past their tumultuous breakup/make up, will Steve be in any condition to enjoy it?

Meanwhile, electric guitar virtuoso and arachnid expert Eleanor Crawley has to navigate her own crisis. When her boyfriend Phil is caught in a compromising position with a co-worker and the image goes viral on social media, she is utterly humiliated. But is dumping Phil for a guy like quintessential “lady’s man” Rich Richards really a good idea? And if she could only quit dreaming about being in bed with Steve…and Autumn…

Forever Winter takes you from the mean streets of New York City to the neon lights of Tokyo. You’ll laugh, you’ll sigh, and you’ll be glad you came along for the ride.

Excerpts:

1 – “You were gonna say ‘until I got off,’ weren’t you?” Rex said, slapping

Phil on the shoulder. “Don’t take it bad, Philly boy, women are

hard to please. Sometimes you need, heh heh, mechanical assistance…”

“What?” Crawley said as Phil slapped a palm over his face.

“He is speaking of vibrators, ja?” Sven said.

“Oh,” Crawley said, giggling.

“Please stop talking,” Phil said, his cheeks flushed.

“You really don’t have a vibrator?” Rex said. “I thought all women

had vibrators. Shelly has a whole collection.”

“For god’s sake,” Phil said.

“…different heads, different sizes…she even has one that’s shaped

like John Holmes.”

“Who’s John Holmes?” Crawley said.

“Legendary porno movie star,” Sven said. “He had a twenty centimeter

penis.”

“Centimeter?” Rex said. “This is America, Sven, we use inches!”

“Actually,” Crawley said, “as of 1982, the United States has officially

adopted the metric system.”

No wonder Tech support lines are so damn slow

2 – “The pink stuff has some nasty chemicals in it,” said Crawley,

pushing her hand away. “I usually drink unsweetened tea, but this

stuff —”

“Eleanor, honey,” Lexi said condescendingly, “how are you going

to squeeze into those tight designer jeans when you’re all bloated up

from empty calories?”

“Actually, that’s a misnomer,” Crawley said as she dumped the

packet into her awaiting drink. “You see, there’s no such thing as

empty calories. A calorie is the energy it takes to heat up one milliliter

of water one degree. There is such a thing as too many calories, but

ostensibly there’s nothing bad about sugar. It’s better for you than

the cocktail of lethal ingredients in artificial sweetener.”

Lexi and Char stared at for a moment and then started laughing.

“Right,” Lexi said, giggling, “sugar is good for you!”

3 – Steve’s jaw set hard, and he put his hand on her knee.

“I need you Autumn, I really do, the way grass needs rain.”

She put her hand on top of his, eyes boring deeply into his own.

“I know. I need you too, Steve. Don’t you believe that?”

“I do believe it. But I need more than that. I need you to believe.

I need to know that you believe in me, in us.”

Autumn’s jaw fell open, and she stiffened. Her voice had a scoffing

note to it when she spoke.

“I believe in us!”

“Do you?” Steve said, but she had stuck her head out the window

to yell at a particularly nasty driver she had offended.

“Blow it out your ass, you cum stain!” she bellowed at top volume.

“Yeah, I’m talking to you! What? What you gonna do? My boyfriend is

huge! He’ll kick your ass!”

When she pulled her head back inside the car, he had to smile

a bit.

“Let’s go before we end up on one of those video clip shows where

people fight in the middle of traffic.”

“I like those shows,” she said with a giggle, causing more bedlam

in traffic as she rudely pulled out in front of another car. “Especially

the ones with Sheriff John what’s his name, you know the guy with

the orange spray tan and that annoying ‘told you so’ voice?”

“These fugitives,” Steve said in a high pitched, annoying way,

“thought they were going to get a free ride. But they couldn’t drive

far enough to escape the long arm of the law!”

Autumn chortled so hard she nearly slammed into the rear of

a huge pickup truck.

4 – Autumn grabbed him under the chin and kissed him forcefully.

“Never mind…right now, I don’t give a shit who hears us.”

She squirmed in his arms playfully as he swept her off to the

bedroom. Steve dropped her onto the mattress. Autumn got on all

fours facing him, eyes half-lidded and a coy smile on her face. She

reached out her hand and unbuckled his belt. Steve stroked her silken

hair gently, a slightly perplexed smile on his face.

“What?” Autumn said, pausing when she had his fly half undone.

“Nothing. I was just thinking you’re beautiful.”

“Pffft.” Autumn rolled her brown eyes. “There’s better looking

chicks, sugar.”

“Come on, you could have any guy you wanted.”

“Shut up and take off your pants.”

Steve laughed, then slipped out of his shoes and then his trousers.

He was ready, his member lunging out of his boxers at her. Autumn

leaned forward and put her mouth to work. She kneaded his buttocks

with her hands, playing him the best way she knew how.

“God,” he said, putting his hands gently on the back of her head.

A soft rain pattered against the window, the subtle hiss of it falling

masking the street noise. Her soft, brown eyes enveloped him in a

gaze which suggested he was the only thing that mattered in that

instant. Autumn’s lips and tongue worked together, slippery and

sliding along the length of his cock. He tried to hold out, but she

knew him very well at that point, knew just how to please him best.

She felt him spasm, receiving the results of her efforts even when he

tried to warn her it was coming.

“You’re so bad,” he said as she leaned back on the bed and smiled.

“Aye,” she said, affecting a Scottish brogue, “the way you like it!”

“Was that a Highlander reference?”

“Is that the one where the guys are hacking at each other with

swords in the middle of New York?”

“Yeah.”

“Never seen it. I’m not a nerd.”

She burst out laughing when Steve sputtered. His face was crossed

with a playfully sinister look. He crawled onto the bed, lightly shoving

her on her back when she rose to try to kiss him.

excerpt

She was out of my league in more ways than one, but I noticed her long brown hair, skimming down her back, hanging straight. I hadn’t noticed before that she had some kind of highlights that shimmered in the harsh fluorescent lighting of the room. Just the sight of her brought tightness to my chest. I couldn’t get enough air. I was about to walk away, knowing I could never be involved with her, when I changed my mind and opened the door to hear her let out a squeak.

“You scared the crap out of me,” she hissed, but with a small smile. My breath hitched when she looked at me, then her face hardened slightly.

“Mr. Ramirez. I haven’t seen you in a while. How are you?” She was all formal politeness as if I were some student’s father.

“Ms. Carter. I’m fine, and you?” I replied with mockery in my voice.

She smirked at me and then returned to finish writing on her white board. I took in the classroom, noting that it was for younger students, but not really noticing anything at all. I sat at a desk in the front row then slid my palms over to the edge of the flat surface and gripped it.

“So this is your classroom,” I said, not really knowing what to say.

“Yes. I believe you are familiar with it as you clean it each night.”

I grunted, and looked away.

“You always work late.” It was said as a question, but was more of a statement.

“I work hard…and I have a lot to do.”

I might have thought she was dismissing me, but I didn’t move from the desk.

“Tell me what you do.”

She turned and glared at me, as if I had insulted her.

“I mean, tell me what you have to do so late each night. Why aren’t you home, or on a date?” This last question I didn’t want answered. Maybe she did have dates. I wouldn’t know and shouldn’t care.

“I have to get organized for the next day. Plan. Grade. Contact parents.” She leveled a stare at me.

I only nodded in response.

“Do you have a lot of naughty children?” I laughed.

“Naughty?”

“You know, misbehaved, so that you have to call their parents.”

“Not many. I call more with concerns related to academics.” She glared my way again before straightening something on her desk.

“I got in trouble a lot in school,” I began, looking at her as she continued to ignore me. She was purposely doing it now, because she’d straightened the same pile several times, even though it was already neatly stacked.

“Uh-huh,” she pretended disinterest.

“Stared out the window. Teased the girls. Talked a lot in class.”

She looked up at me finally and raised an eyebrow above her sexy glasses.

“I was a good student, academically,” I emphasized, “but I was bored and that can lead to trouble.”

She came around her desk and sat on the edge, listening intently.

“I didn’t know what I wanted to be when I grew up, and I made some…poor decisions. I was in two different high schools, and it was when I was a junior that things changed for me. I had an AP Physics teacher that believed in my potential and helped me apply to college. I’d be the first one in my family to ever go.”

I was lost in the thought of Mr. Croft, who’d pushed me to work harder and do better in order to make the basketball team with passing grades. When I was a senior, Mr. Croft helped me fill out the forms for Northeastern and secure the necessary student scholarship. I hated to think that I might have disappointed Mr. Croft by taking this break in my senior year.

I looked up at Tricia, who was watching me.

“I wanted to be a pro-basketball player, but that wasn’t going to happen by attending a Chicago city university. Physics was my next favorite subject, and I’m good with my hands and building things. I like to study things like motion. Basketball is all physics.” I held my hands up as if to show her my physical tools, then felt silly and returned them to grip the edge of the desk. She walked over to stand in front of the desk where I sat and balanced against the edge of it.

“When I had to…when I came up here, I had to put it all on hold; hopefully only until January,” I added the last part and looked at her sheepishly. She seemed to be attentively listening and not judging me. I could tell in the way she held her hand under her chin, fingers wrapped around her exposed neck. She appeared thoughtful and I wanted her to know something about me. I wanted her to understand that I was trying to keep my life together. I had a goal.

“What?” she asked and I saw her swallow. I hadn’t realized how long I’d been staring at her.

“I’m trying to imagine getting in trouble by you as my teacher,” I lied to cover the stare. “I don’t think you could be intimidating.”

“Intimidating? I can be intimidating,” she laughed.

“Doubt it. Pretend I just teased someone or talked too much, and give me your best Ms. Carter scowl or reprimand.”

She laughed and then tried to straighten her face. She bit her lip, which was more seductive and playful than frightening, and I assumed she did it to hold back another laugh. She leaned across the desk, hands on either side of the flat writing surface, and looked down at me over those glasses. She was trying to be firm, but I could tell again that she was struggling. She tugged at her own lip to hold the smile. She had pressed her breasts together, unknowingly. My eyes wandered down her neck to the V-cut and her exposed cleavage.

“Are you looking at my breasts?” she gasped.

“Well, you put them in my face and if I was twelve, I would be so distracted I wouldn’t mind getting in trouble.”

She gasped even louder and pushed off the desk, but my quick hands imprisoned each of her wrists, holding her palms on the desktop.

I blatantly looked at her rising breasts, pressed firmly together and bursting out of the V in her sweater. My eyes climbed up her soft looking neck to her jaw, and then to her mouth before I met her eyes. Those glasses were too damn hot.

“You aren’t very scary as a teacher,” I said, not recognizing my own voice.

“You aren’t scary, either,” she replied, but I knew she was lying. Her ragged breathing gave away the fine line between thrill and threat. I wouldn’t hurt her. I could never hurt a woman the way I had seen others do it. I wouldn’t ever stand by and watch others hurt women.

My hand slowly slid up one of her forearms and I could feel her tremble under my touch. Her mossy colored eyes sparkled with gold flecks. I could be lost in them forever, if I let her in. But I couldn’t do that.

“You play the role of naughty teacher pretty well,” I teased.

“Naughty teacher?” she gasped again, trying to pull out of my firm hold on her.

“You know you have the sexy, tease factor going on. And the glasses…” I smiled slightly as she turned a shade of pink. Pink was definitely becoming one of my favorite colors on her. I wanted to trace the line of that blush as it traveled from somewhere within her sweater, up her neck, and over her face.

“Tease?” she questioned firmer.

The door to her room opened with a swoosh sound.

“Missa Carter, you work too hard.” Damn that Italian accent.

I released her at the same time she pulled back abruptly, and her foot slipped in her high heels. I reached for her as she regained her composure by gripping the desk a second time to prevent from falling. She looked at me with those mischievous sparkling eyes and a bit of anger. With my hands on her upper arms, I tried to right her from slipping. It pressed her breasts even closer together between her arms. As she clasped the front of the desk, facing me, she almost burst forth from the V-shape in the sweater. My eyes traveled downward before glancing up at her face.

“Bad teacher,” I whispered, shaking my head. Her shocked expression was priceless. I wanted to kiss her. I wanted to kiss her so badly, and that made me a bad boy.

Prologue

Four years earlier

Josh

Jesus Christ, she was tight.

The more I edged in, the tighter her body squeezed my cock, which inevitably sent pleasure spiraling through me. The feeling of tightness, combined with her tiny whimpers, were like music to my ears, and acted as the perfect melody for the act I was about to perform. This moment started with a fleeting glance across the bar, a connection of our eyes, and the offering of a smirk; the same smirk I’d been known to use to get into the pants and apartments of girls plenty of times before.

I wondered if the look across the bar tonight was when she thought what was happening started. She would be sorely mistaken if she did. I had noticed Ashlyn Hart long ago. Ashlyn Hart was the stunning, blond-haired girl with the insane green eyes and kissable lips that grabbed my attention the start of freshman year. I first noticed her in the library, surrounded by books. Her glasses were sitting on the edge of her nose, and she was chewing on the end of a pen. Her blonde hair was piled on the top of her head, with loose strands surrounding her face, and she looked completely in her zone. I couldn’t take my eyes off her.

Yep, I certainly noticed her for all the right reasons, and tonight was no different.

Tonight was the first night in God only knows how long that I succeeded in getting my older brother Ky to leave the seclusion of our apartment. He didn’t even fight me, which was surprising. The moment we arrived at our local bar he started downing beers, while I started scoping out the other patrons, looking for some fun for the night. It seemed that fun would come in the form of Ashlyn Hart, and my eyes latched onto her fiercely.

She was toward the back, standing close to the guy I knew was her older brother, Austin. They were in a serious conversation, his hands on her shoulders, and she was looking up at him with wide eyes and a worry-filled face. Rumor around campus was that Ashlyn was from a well-off family from the West Coast, but she didn’t have much to do with them. Apparently she had fled for the east as soon as she finished high school and was here under a scholarship, which could explain why she always was studying. Although Austin was five or so years older than her, he would randomly come and visit, and I had seen her out with him a few times.

As soon as I saw her dodge her way through the crowd and head to the bar, I swooped in. She was a beautiful girl, and since I was a guy with an overactive imagination and a cock that really liked beautiful girls, she was definitely on my radar. Ashlyn was unique and refreshing. And though she hid behind her glasses and oversized clothing, her eyes, flawless face, and womanly curves that would be dangerous to any guy’s libido, grabbed a tight hold of my attention.

Tonight, my plan was to test the waters, to see if she could be my fun for the night. I stepped up beside her at the packed bar as she waited to be served, and that would be the first of many times she’d shock me for the night. When Ashlyn greeted me by name, offered me a flirty smile, and gave me the indication that she was just as willing to test the waters as I was, I was completely floored. Where had this sassy woman been hiding? My interest skyrocketed, and I needed more. As we drank beer, I bought pizza for us both and she showed me another side of her, a side that had been hidden in the books and sweaters. Austin, her brother, had gone long ago, and at that moment all I saw was her, and all I wanted was all of Ashlyn Hart. It would seem that she had plans to give me all of her.

Now as she was wedged below me, looking up at me with the widest and most eager eyes I had ever seen, I couldn’t believe my luck. Her face was flushed, her lips parted, and her tits rose with every deep breath she took. She was a fucking delight to look at. My hands cupped her face and, with eager intent, my lips fell to hers as I feasted on the perfect pout that was previously covered with bright-red lipstick. I had been craving this moment for a long time, and I wasn’t afraid to admit that. I didn’t know what got my attention most, whether it was the innocent look she had going on, which she completely obliterated tonight, or the fact that I never actually saw her with any other guys or girls. She was a one-woman show—a woman of mystery, and I would make it my mission to discover who she was.

“Fuck me, you’re so tight.” I moaned against her neck as I shifted my hips higher and attempted to push further into her slick wetness. Her whimpers increased, and her nails dug into my back, grating their way down to my ass with every tiny movement I made. Everything spun around me the moment I hit a barrier inside of her.

She couldn’t be.

“Please don’t stop,” Ashlyn begged softly. I tore my face from the confines of her neck and my eyes met pleading green pits of desire that flickered with anxiety.

She was a virgin.

There was no way in hell I was doing this. No fucking way. I had never taken a girls virginity, and I wouldn’t be starting tonight. I shifted and slowly began pulling out, but halted when her hands gripped my naked ass and held me in place.

“I don’t deserve this,” I whispered into the electric air as I avoided her gaze.

“Josh, do you really think I would have come here, kissed you like I’ve never kissed a guy before, gotten naked, and let it go as far as it has if I didn’t want it?”

“Do you really want your first time to be with someone you barely know? I have wanted inside you from the moment I saw you, and it’s because I’m just a guy who wants to fuck. You deserve romance, candles, and the whole shebang for your first time.”

Her face twisted as a smile graced her lips and her eyes softened. “You bought me beer and pizza.”

“Fucking hell, woman. Buying you beer and pizza does not entitle me entrance to your virginal pussy.”

“Can you please stop saying virgin?”

“But you are a virgin; a sexy as fuck virgin, but still a virgin.”

“Why are we even having this conversation?” She rolled her eyes, spitting the kind of sass that I was quickly learning was fucking incredible for my libido.

My gaze roamed over her face, and I found a woman who wanted exactly what I could give her. She tempted me from the very moment I laid eyes on her, and the confident woman now writhing beneath me was a woman I had never seen her portray before. The oversized sweaters, the glasses that sat on the edge of her nose, and the top knot she always sported were long gone. Now I was witnessing a sexy woman who wanted to give me her greatest gift. Her eyes burned with desire, and her lips were swollen from my earlier attack.

“Fuck!” I groaned and buried my face in her neck. Why was I even hesitating? If this was any other girl, I would have fucked her hard and fast and she would be on her way home, so why was I hesitating? I moaned as Ashlyn started lifting her hips and moving her body. My cock with a mind of its own found her hot, eager pussy, but soon I was reminded of what was at stake when I once again hit the barrier.

I pulled out quickly and slid off the bed with a huff.

“Josh!” Ashlyn called and covered her eyes with her arm. As I reached the door, I twisted back to look at her. She was stunning, and seeing her in my bed, naked and glorious, was crazy to comprehend. She had gone from being a one-night stand to someone who wanted me to become a forever memory. You always remembered the person who took your virginity. Fuck, I remember exactly who took mine when I was seventeen. Did I want to be a forever memory to Ashlyn Hart?

I shook my head and rushed out of the room with only one thing on my mind.

I’d give this girl romance.

As I scrounged around the living room for candles—why the fuck Ky and I had candles was anyone’s guess—I heard movement coming from down the hall. The layout of the apartment allowed me to see into my bedroom, so I turned and saw Ashlyn sitting up on my bed, pulling on her shirt and fixing her hair.

Something in me switched as I began witnessing the loss of sassy Ashlyn, and I refused to allow her to leave. Everything about tonight had shifted, and now all I had was a carnal need to give her everything she wanted and then some.

“Do not cover yourself, Ashlyn. Lie back down, keep that shirt off, and be ready for me.” I knew I was being bossy, but I couldn’t let her leave. Her eyes shot wide, and her head whipped around to look down the hall at me. Thankfully, she wasn’t offended by my harsh tone. As if in slow motion, her hands disappeared behind her back and unclasped her bra, letting her plump tits bounce in freedom before she slowly lay back down. Fuck me dead, she was a vision of stunning beauty. I rushed around frantically, and finally found what I was looking for.

“What are you doing?” Ashlyn asked softly, her eyes following my every move as I entered my bedroom and closed the door behind me.

Without responding, I switched off the lights, and in the darkness stumbled my way to the dresser. A glow permeated the room as I ignited three vanilla-scented candles. Her shocked gasp rang through the room, and my eyes slammed shut at the intensity of the situation. What the fuck was I doing?

“Josh.” Her voice was so delicate that it sounded like it would shatter if I didn’t acknowledge her.

I slowly turned to face her, and then crawled on the bed until my body covered hers.

“I’m not taking your virginity without giving you a little piece of romance, Ashy.”

That would be the first time I’d use her nickname, and that would be the first time she would slowly take hold of my heart.

Ashlyn

I woke to a delicious ache throbbing between my thighs, and a heavy arm over my naked stomach. I was on my back, my legs entwined with another’s, and warm breath tickling my neck. I was completely and utterly satisfied.

My mind was alive as I reminisced about every detail of the night before. Everything was so clear and concise, and locked so tightly in my memory bank that there was no chance I’d ever forget it. I’d handed my virginity to Josh Crawford on a platter, and he took it like it was his last meal.

With a subtle move, I turned my head until I was face to face with him. His eyes were closed, leaving his long lashes to caress his cheeks, and his even breathing told me he was still in a deep sleep. The lips that had devoured every inch of my body continued to taunt me as my gaze lingered over him.

Last night, after he brought the candles into the room, he climbed onto the bed and hovered over me. I would never forget the look that filtered over his face in those few seconds before his lips fell back to mine. He looked at me like I was the most precious commodity; like I was a gem that he wanted to discover and keep for eternity. It shocked me.

Josh spent the next thirty minutes kissing and caressing my body with his fingers, hands, and mouth until he thought I was ready. I was a panting mess. In one swift move, he pushed deep inside of me. I didn’t know what to expect. Yes, it hurt, but only for a brief moment. Then I felt my body tremble with delight, and it felt like a thousand fireworks were set off in one go.

I knew of Josh, but I didn’t know Josh. Does that make sense? I admired him from afar. He was dangerously sexy, and he’d wreaked havoc on my body and thoughts for months, even though he had absolutely no clue. His eyes reminded me of pots of melted dark chocolate, his lips were luscious, and he always had the just-got-fucked hair going on. His reputation around campus was that of a legend. I knew he slept around; I had overheard plenty of girls talking about him, and just how well-endowed he was, but that didn’t stop me. If anything, it encouraged me. The question was bound to circulate: why did Ashlyn Hart give Josh Crawford, practically a stranger, her virginity? The answer was simple: my virginity was mine to give.

I wanted spontaneity, I wanted craziness, and I wanted someone who knew what they were doing. My life had been so structured and mapped out that I wanted to be in charge for once. I wanted to make the decision. I knew their virginity was a huge deal to some people; those who waited their whole lives to find that special someone to share it with. But I was never that girl. Judge me as you will.

I slowly lifted Josh’s arm from my naked stomach and held my breath as he scrunched his face and shifted in bed. After sliding out, I stood completely naked next to him and waited. Now that would be an awkward good morning—him finding me naked and staring at him. Once he settled, I moved quickly and rounded his room, grabbing my panties, bra, jeans, and top that Josh had thrown around. I dressed quickly, threw my hair into a crazy-ass bun on the top of my head, and snuck out of his room, but not before giving him one last longing look. I was free. Or so I thought.

I gasped loudly, and my clutch fell from my hands and crashed to the floor as I rounded the hall and came face to face with Ky Crawford. Not only did he wear scruff better than most men, but the same could be said for the sweatpants that hung loosely on his hips. I knew who Ky Crawford was. Everyone knew who Ky Crawford was. He was the key witness against Jeremy Davis, who was charged and later convicted of the attack and rape of Eden Rivers. He was also the guy who had been destroying himself ever since.

His head jerked up at the sound of my clutch colliding with the floor tiles, and shock covered his face as his eyes ran over me.

“I’m sorry, I was just leaving,” I said in a rush, crouching down to salvage my things while humiliation took over.

He crouched down beside me, and I cringed as he started to help pick up my lip-gloss and loose change. “You stayed here?”

“Um, yes. With Josh,” I stammered, then jammed the last of my things into my clutch and rose to my feet.

“Well, fuck me,” he said, amusement hitting his words as he joined me on his feet.

The small talk was making me flustered. Two attractive Crawfords in one day was too much for any girl to endure. “Sorry to bother you. I was just leaving.”

“I’ve seen you around campus. You’re in some of Josh’s classes.” Ky stepped away and headed to the kitchen. He moved straight to the coffee maker, switched it on, then pulled two mugs from the overhead cupboard. My eyes trained on him, and when he poured two steaming-hot, freshly-brewed coffees for him and Josh, I knew I had to get out of there. To say I was shocked beyond comprehension when he handed me a mug was an understatement.

Well, this was completely weird and unexpected. I lifted the coffee to my lips and sighed as the hot liquid flooded my veins and helped push aside the exhaustion that was quickly gripping my still-humming body.

I looked at him over the top of the mug before I asked, “Do you provide coffee to all the girls your brother brings home?”

His smile replaced the confused look I saw earlier. “He never brings girls back. Consider this a celebratory coffee. I think little Josh Crawford may be growing up.”

Nervous laughter left my body as I tried to cover my shock. Josh never bought girls home, but here I was. I stammered as I said, “It’s just a one night thing. He’ll probably never see me again.”

“You can’t be missed. I’ve seen you around campus. I’m pretty certain every man with a functioning cock has seen you.”

I choked on my coffee at his blatant disregard of subtlety. “You Crawford boys aren’t afraid to say what you really think, are you?”

“Over the past six months, I’ve learned that you just have to say what you think. Screw the consequences, because you don’t know if you’ll ever get the chance again.”

I watched as his eyes lost the sparkle and darted away from mine. Suddenly, the urge to offer this stranger comfort took over, and I decided to provide a little humor to get the sparkle back, so I took Ky’s advice and laid it out for him.

“Last night your brother rocked my world and bought me pizza and beer. And now you’ve made me the best coffee I’ve ever had. I might just get used to the Crawford brothers.”

He clinked his mug against mine and smiled. “My brother would be an idiot not to keep hold of you.”

“Well, yeah, I’m clearly a catch.”

And that was the first time I thought of Josh like that.

The legs of a beautiful young woman as she lies in bed

Excerpt

The rest of my family arrives with the late afternoon. There’s an awkward trepidation surrounding each of them before they approach me, and although it makes me feel slightly guilty, I’m a little grateful for it as well. It allows me to soak into a familiar level of numbness that only seems to briefly break when Jameson arrives. His familiar smile falters when he sees me, but he replaces it quickly and pulls me into a hug.

Chicken pot pie is our family’s traditional Christmas Eve dinner, and although I was glad to not have a traditional meal on Thanksgiving with Fitz’s family, I’m even more glad to have the comforting aroma and taste of my mom’s chicken pot pie.

“Ace, do you want some more bread?” Savannah asks, lifting the bread basket and tilting it in my direction. I think I’ve already had this same question posed to me nine other times.

“I’m good thanks.”

“How about some more fried apples?” my mom asks, doing as Savannah had and reaching for the bowl in front of her.

I try to think of a polite way to tell them all to stop bothering me about eating when a glint catches my eye with my mom’s movement. My hand snatches hers and before I realize what I’m doing, I’m gripping her hand too tightly. Bile rises in my throat, forcing me to swallow painfully.

“We were going to tell you all tonight,” she begins. Her hand grows rigid and she attempts to slip her fingers from my hold. I squeeze tighter. “We wanted you to all find out together.”

“What in the hell is wrong with you?” I shout, dropping her hand and retracting mine because I don’t want to touch her. I don’t even want to look at her. I shove my chair back and stand up, not caring what the others are doing in reaction.

“Harper Jo, sit down,” my mom orders, her voice louder than I’ve heard it in years, possibly ever.

I keep walking.

Her quick footsteps follow me. I know that it’s her because of the sound of her heels. My mom has always worn shoes to dinner, and ninety percent of her shoe closet consists of high heels, and right now this fact annoys the hell out of me.

I turn to face her when I reach the kitchen. My mouth opens, preparing to let loose on the anger fueling me, but she beats me to it. “You get back in there this instant! You do not get to judge me, young lady. This is my house, and in my house you respect me. Now get back in there and eat something. You look horrible.” Her tone inflicts a pain that I want to return.

“It hasn’t even been a year!” The volume of my accusation hurts my own ears. “Did you ever even love him?”

Her face contorts, changing from shock to anger to something that looks nearly wicked. “That’s quite the question coming from you, when you packed your bags and left everyone without looking over your shoulder.”

“I hate you right now.” My voice comes out balanced and heat races through me. I was never the rebellious teenager. In all of my life, I never did scream these same words at my mom like I’d heard Mindi, Jenny, Kendall, and even Savannah do on different occasions. But right now, all I feel toward her is hatred that blinds me from any other emotion.

“I’m not so fond of you lately either, kiddo.”

“Then why in the hell did you make such a big deal about me coming home?”

“It was a mistake.” Her light blue eyes look glacial as she stares directly into mine without a hint of regret or remorse.

“I guess you can add it to your list, behind getting engaged within seven months of your husband dying.” My words are far quieter this time. I don’t have the energy to scream them at her like I want to. I use the small amount of what is left to turn before she can respond and head out to the backyard.

My pain feels like a living, breathing thing, consuming me inch by inch as her words play over in my head. My mom’s getting married. The heat that had filled me seconds ago fades, replaced by an icy chill. As I look into the pool that once only held fun and an escape, my body begins to sway. I want to escape again. I want to escape from everything.

Not even the familiar pool holds a warm embrace for me. The water is far cooler than what it has always been kept at, making my skin prickle as I sink further into the abyss. I open my eyes as I go, looking out into a never ending sea of blue.

Arms grab me before I can fully appreciate the beauty of the water and the bubbles floating from my throat to the surface where blurred lights dance. They pull me against a large body that feels sharp in contrast to the open water. As we plunge through the surface, into the night air, I hear him take in a deep breath. He is still anchoring me against him, pulling me toward the shallow end.

I don’t resist. I don’t know what I was doing coming in here. I’m sure he’s thinking I’m insane, or trying to kill myself. I’m not. I wasn’t. I just needed to feel something that didn’t hurt.
