Synopsis
My name is Ellie Winters, and I’m one of those unfortunate women you hear about on the news—but you never think my fate will ever happen to you. Not that I blame you for believing that. Honestly, I thought the same thing, until I became a statistic, a missing person who was assumed dead. Wrong place, wrong time.
Except…I’m not dead. Not yet. I was kidnapped, shackled, beaten, and deprived of the basic necessities, and pretty much left to find a slow, painful demise. I’m hanging on, but just barely. I’m not even sure what I’m waiting for since there’s no hope for me, nobody waiting for me. I had finally given up, resigned myself to my inevitable death…when the one man who could make me want to live again finds me more dead than alive. After so many months in captivity, I’m lost, hopelessly damaged. Is it even possible for me to come out of the darkness and into the light again?

Zane Colter challenges me to live again, laugh again, live my life again. But I’m not sure if I’ll ever be the same woman I was before I was held captive by a madman. Yet, he doesn’t give up, and I couldn’t ignore the white-hot passion that sizzled between the two of us.
He’s everything I’ve ever wanted, everything I’ve always needed.
Tender–but stubborn.
Logical–but understanding.
Sweet–but hot, demanding and possessive.
As we fall into each other, both hungry for a passion we’ve never known, I wonder if I can be what Zane needs when I’m struggling to find myself again.
And when I’m finally healed, I’ll have a choice to make: Do I try to hang onto him forever, or will letting go be my only option?…

Dani

I’ve
always hated Marcus Colter. I have since high school. We antagonize
each other every time we meet, and I thought our dislike was mutual,
until he ends up saving my life on a suicide mission to rescue me from
my captors, men who would have killed me if not for Marcus. Everything
that happens after that successful, crazy, and dangerous mission
confuses me.

Turns out, not only is Marcus incredibly brave,
but he also has a gruff kindness that I never knew existed. His quiet
strength sees me through my pain and fear after he pulls me out of the
danger zone.

I’m not sure what to think of Marcus Colter anymore.

He’s
still the bossy alpha male who drives me crazy, but I eventually
discover that there’s so much more to Marcus than what’s on the surface.

Apparently, I’ve never known the real Marcus Colter.

Maybe nobody does…

Wow!!! This is one of my favorite series. What more could you want, hot alpha male, steamy romance & lots of excitement!!! This is a true page turner, which keeps you on edge. I really enjoyed Hard Rules but Damage Control just pulls you further in this twisted tale and leaves you wanting more!

Shane will have you from the start; this man is all alpha male with a very caring side. He goes to no end to protect and fight for what he feels is his. Emily is just what Shane needs a bright light in the darkest of times. She is fierce and refuses to give in when it seems there is no hope to find.

Biting my nails until I can get a hold of Bad Deeds sound and feels like this one is going to be filled with lots more twist and turns!!!

“You make me remember I need to be good and right in my choices.”

“Do you ever question doing what is good and right?”

“There have been times when I felt like my hand was forced.”

“When you were a lawyer?”

“No,” I say. “I manipulated the law, as does every attorney, but I never broke it. I’m talking about when I’m with my family.”

“Did you go where they lead?”

“Not so far.”

“That sounds like you might.”

“I don’t want to be them.”

“You aren’t them. You don’t have to be them.”

“I know that,” I say. “But you just keep telling me so I don’t forget.” Her legs hit the bed frame and she grips my arms.

I lean into a kiss and she pulls back, her hand pressing on my chest. “Wait. Now it’s my turn to say talk to me. Are you okay?”

“Death happened. The one thing I can’t control. It’s not the night to push me to stop protecting you. Not tonight. Can you do that?”

“Yes. We can.”

“We,” I repeat, “and that word sounds as good on my tongue as I know you’re going to taste. I’m going to make love to you properly. The way I plan to many times in our future.” I reach down and untie her robe, letting it fall open; my fingers sliding underneath just far enough to tease her nipples. They pucker beneath my touch, and her lashes flutter, settling on her cheeks. “But when it’s over, I’m going to fuck you hard and fast again.”

I tug gently on her nipples and she bites her lips. “Look at me,” I order gently.

She opens her eyes, and there is desire in their depths, but there are shadows there too,. I do not think she intends for me to see doubt or uncertainty that wasn’t there before. That I do not like or wish to know ever again. I want it gone. Now. Tomorrow. Forever. I reach up and rip the silk tie from her robe, wrapping it around my hand, before I reach up and caress the robe off her shoulder, letting it tumble to the ground.

“Give me your hands,” I order, but it’s really a question: Does she still trust me?

She studies me for several beats, her eyes narrowing ever so slightly, and I do not know what she sees in mine, but she offers me her hands. I wrap the silk around her wrists then lean in close to her, my cheek against her cheek, my body touching her nowhere else. “Now you’re at my mercy.”

“Yes,” she agrees. “I am.”

“How do you feel about that?”

“Warm.”

My lips curve with the answer that is every bit the combination of sweet sexy honesty I’ve come to expect from her. “I’m going to make you warmer.”

“Promise?”

I go still with that question, which on the surface is innocent, but I wonder if it truly is or if it’s about those shadows in her eyes. “I promise,” I say. “And you know, I never—”

“Make a promise you don’t keep.”

“Exactly,” I say, and her reference to my previous words tells me that I am not the only one on a mission of trust, and I intend to deserve hers.

I bring my hands to just above her shoulders, letting them lightly touch her before beginning a slow caress downward. She makes a soft little sound that has my cock thickening and my blood running hot, but I won’t rush this. My lips follow, tracing a line down one of her arms, then the other. I lean and caress my lips over hers, a feather light touch that teases me, if not her.

I take her hands in mine, pressing them behind her head. “Hold them there, for me, so I can see all of you. Understand?”

“You intend to tease me incessantly,” she says, without so much as a hint of hesitation. “Yes. I understand.”

I wrap my arm around her waist and pull her naked body against me, my free hand on hers above her head, our mouths a breath apart. “I intend to lick every part of you, and then do it again, so yes. If that’s the definition of incessant teasing, then yes. I am going to tease you incessantly.” I close my mouth down on hers, my tongue licking into her mouth, a deep, hungry tasting I force myself to end far too quickly. “That was the beginning. Should I could continue?”

“Yes. Please.”

“Please,” I say. “I like that.”

Billionaire Unknown – Author J.S. Scott

I was perfectly content with my life. My career was
booming. I traveled. I did as much charity work as I possibly could for
the homeless, and I was perfectly happy with the choices I’d made.
At least…I was–until my sister, Dani, came up missing. As an
international correspondent, she traveled to war-torn countries, and
she’d stepped a little too far over the line. With my sibling kidnapped
and running out of time, I had no option except to approach Marcus
Colter for help.
Seeing Marcus again after having him break my
heart over a decade ago wasn’t easy, but to my relief, the old feelings I
thought I might still harbor for him were completely gone. He was like a
stranger to me. After meeting with him, my only emotion was gratitude
that he was going to try to rescue my sister.
Before I could
relax about feeling nothing for Marcus, I met Blake Colter, and realized
every emotion I thought I’d have for Marcus was suddenly present for
the gorgeous US senator.
It was ridiculous. I hadn’t seen Blake since we were kids.
How could I have given myself to Marcus so many years ago, yet have these feelings for his twin brother, Blake?
The more time I spent with Blake, waiting for my sister to be rescued, the more confused I became about my attraction to him.
Then, my entire world came crashing down when I found out that
everything I thought was true for over a decade wasn’t the truth at all.
What happens when a woman finds out that a man she’d both loved and hated for over a decade never really existed at all?

I’m a package handler at National Express, and today, I have a package for Mr. Charles Masters, billionaire and CEO of Launchpad Systems, biggest tech company in the nation. Excerpt

I head down the hall, and that man was right. I can’t miss the office door with Charles Masters, CEO in bold, white letters. When I knock, no one answers, so I let myself in to do as the man told me to do—leave it on the desk.

As I enter, I’m taken aback by the sheer modern, fancy vibe of the room. Everything’s sleek. Rounded corners. Black, white, and gray. Little splashes of red in the form of his mouse pad, a painting, and the marbles in a clear vase on his desk. The brown of the package barely fits in with the color scheme, but the delivered box seems at home on his desk.

Now that I’ve done my job, I should leave and get on with my day. Yes. Yes, I should do that.

But I don’t.

Curiosity wins out, and I walk behind the desk and sit in his chair—which isn’t a wingback chair, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a one-of-a-kind. Maybe it’s my plain taste, but I’ve never seen anything like it.

Probably because I’ve never been in a situation like this. Surrounded by wealth, success, money. And that’s fine. Not having those things hasn’t diminished my happiness. I’m doing all right without them. My job is steady, I have amazing friends, and my heart isn’t broken.

That being said, I could be…happier.

But whatever. Everything happens for a reason, and good things come to those who wait. So I’ll keep waiting while everything keeps happening for reasons.

I lean back in Charles Masters’s chair. I don’t know what comes over me, but I put my feet up on the desk too, crossing my legs at my ankles. Then I clasp my hands in my lap and wonder if this is what it feels like to have the world at my fingertips. A smile crosses my lips as I can see how someone can get used to this.

And then a throat clears, which snaps me out of my reverie right quick.

I jump out of the chair. Mostly because I don’t want to lose my job if this incident gets back to my boss. Getting caught is one thing; getting fired is another.

“Can I help you?” Charles Masters himself asks me from the doorway of his office.

His suit is neat, pressed, and just as sleek as his office. Black pants, black jacket, white shirt, black tie. Crisp and clean.

And it makes him way sexier than I thought it would when I saw pictures of him in the news.

Bonus story – Helen’s Secret Admirer

“Who do you want it to be?” asked Helen’s daughter-in-law and friend, Kara Hudson, as they sat drinking coffee in one of the booths at Helen’s restaurant. Maddie Hudson, Helen’s other daughter-in-law, sat next to Kara wearing the same curious expression.

Today was the big day, the day that her secret admirer finally revealed himself. Helen had been waiting for a long time to find out who had been sending her mysterious deliveries of flowers, candy, and other whimsical gifts, all with romantic little notes that sent her heart fluttering with delight.  Never having had a true romance in her entire life, it was exciting.  But she really couldn’t think of any man in particular she wanted it to be.  Well…she could, but it wasn’t realistic. It was a secret she kept close to her chest, and had never revealed to a single soul.

I’m fifty-six years old.  I’m about to become a grandmother twice over, and I’m acting like a teenager.  I have no business fretting over a secret admirer at my age.  Like any man is that crazy about me?  More than likely, they want to get closer to my billionaire sons.

Helen sighed softly before answering.  “I don’t know.  It could be anyone.”  She met single men her age or older every day, but most of them were just acquaintances, men she socialized with when she attended charity functions or who she chatted with here at her restaurant.  Most of them were charming, a characteristic that she’d found came pretty naturally to the majority of wealthy men.

“But you must have some clue.  Or someone you really hope it turns out to be,” Maddie said excitedly, her hazel eyes dancing with enthusiasm.

Helen looked across the table at Simon and Sam’s wives, two women who had become more like daughters than “in-laws” to her as she answered, “Maybe the mystery was better than the actual truth will be,” she admitted, knowing that she’d been flattered from the very beginning because of the romantic attention. She’d never had that kind of admiration before, and it was heady, even at her age.  Sam and Simon’s father had been pure evil, a man who had forced himself on her when she’d been eighteen and naïve.  She’d ended up pregnant and married to the devil, trying her best to raise her boys to grow up be different men—better men—than their father.  And had they ever!  Her sons had far exceeded even her wildest expectations, in both ambition and heart.  Thank god!

A woman couldn’t ask for two better sons, and the two women sitting across from her had completed both her sons with their love, made them happy.  What more could she want than that?  She finally even had grandbabies on the way. Her boys were happy, settled, and her life should be complete, and yet…

“You have a right to find your own happiness, Helen.  You’ve lived for your boys all of your adult life,” Kara told Helen softly, reaching out to squeeze the older woman’s hand.  “You’re still young and beautiful.  And you have enough energy to wear Maddie and I both out just by watching you.”

Helen squeezed Kara’s hand.  “You’re both pregnant.  I can’t say it would be difficult to outrun you right now,” she answered with a smile at both younger women, Kara’s huge belly hidden underneath the table.  Maddie wasn’t showing yet, but she was experiencing symptoms of early pregnancy, including fatigue.

“You wear us out when we aren’t pregnant,” Maddie replied adamantly.  “We just want you to get your chance to be happy.”

“I am happy,” Helen answered defensively.  How could she not be happy?  Her sons had made sure she wouldn’t want for anything.  They hadn’t been pleased when she’d wanted to work for a living by owning her own restaurant, but they’d given her what she wanted.  Honestly, much more than she even wanted.  She made a very good living with her restaurant, but her boys always thought more was better.  So they never stopped giving.

“I think it’s Michael,” Kara said, a dreamy look in her eyes.  “He’s been coming around for years.  He’s always had a thing for you”

Helen blushed and pulled her hand away from Kara’s, raising her coffee cup to her face to hide her flushed complexion.  The problem was, she did wish it was Michael, but it wasn’t possible.  “He’s eight years younger than I am, handsome and very eligible.  He just comes around for advice on raising his girls.  We’re just friends,” Helen said abruptly, her red face hidden behind her mug, taking another slug of coffee, her hand trembling slightly.

Kara shot Helen an annoyed look.  “He’s sweet on you.  He always has been.  And his daughters are grown up and married now.  What does it matter if he’s a little younger?  He doesn’t look younger than you.  Tell me he still doesn’t come in at least twice a week.”

Helen squirmed in her chair, knowing she couldn’t actually look at Kara and tell her that.  Kara had been a waitress in this restaurant for a long time.  She knew Michael was a regular and probably still was.  “He likes the food.  He doesn’t like to cook,” Helen replied, wanting desperately to change the subject.

“Helen, do you want it to be Michael?” Kara asked softly, both her and Maddie leaning forward to hear her answer.  “He’s wanted to be more than a friend for a long time”

“He doesn’t,” Helen protested, wishing it were true, but knowing it wasn’t. Michael had never given her any indication that he saw her as anything more than a friend, and he was much too young.  And handsome.  And virile.

“Oh, I don’t think he’s ever been drawn here by just the food,” Kara answered mysteriously. “Do you know that whenever he came by and you weren’t here, he’d leave without eating?”

“Hmm…doesn’t sound like a guy who just comes by for food,” Maddie agreed, crossing her arms in front of her with a smile.

“Nope.  And I don’t think he’s here for the food today either,” Kara remarked drily as she scooted carefully to the edge of the booth.  “I think it’s time to get your sons home and out of here.  They’ve already eaten all the food from at least one side of the menu.”

Helen had her back to the door, but she knew Simon and Sam were seated in another booth close to door, both of them waiting for her secret admirer to show.  “Take them.  It isn’t like I need a babysitter.  I’m their mother.  I’m in a public place.  My place.  And I don’t want Simon and Sam to make a scene.”

Helen knew exactly why Sam, Simon, Kara and Maddie were here.  They all wanted to see her anonymous male admirer.  Actually, she had no doubt that her protective sons wanted to do more than gawk at him.

What if it is Michael?

“It’s not Michael,” Helen said, mostly to reassure herself, keep herself from hoping.  Michael Prescott would never think of her that way.  He wasn’t a billionaire like her sons were, but he had a very successful law practice and made a very nice living.  He’d lost his wife when his two daughters were little more than babies and raised them himself, doing a very fine job with them.

Kara winked at her.  “Keep telling yourself that and you might start believing it until he comes over here.”

Kara stood awkwardly and Maddie hopped out beside her.  Helen peered up at the two girls, her arms crossed in front of her.  “Are you trying to say he’s here?” Okay…that was a little disconcerting, but a complete coincidence. “He just came to eat.”

“Uh huh,” Kara answered in a disbelieving voice.  “And I suppose he brought that beautiful bouquet of red roses just to get your opinion on gardening?” Kara said facetiously, her brow cocked, and a questioning look on her face as she looked down at Helen in disbelief.

“He has flowers?” Helen asked anxiously, afraid to turn around and look, her heartbeat racing faster.

Michael is here.  It could be Michael.

“Admit it,” Kara said insistently.  “You always wanted it to be Michael.  You care as much about him as he always has for you.”

Shocked, Helen stuttered, “I can’t.  He can’t.  We…we…aren’t like that.”

“Admit it and we’ll go stop your sons from killing him,” Maddie said with a laugh.

Helen sighed anxiously. “Yes. I admit it. But he’s so caring, so handsome, so… young. I can’t pursue anything but a friendship with him.”

“He’s exactly right for you.  He always has been. Don’t scare him off, Helen. Michael’s exactly what you need and you deserve a nice guy like him.  And you’re the one he’s always wanted.  Please,” Kara asked in a concerned voice. “Tell me you’ll give him a chance so I can go keep Simon from killing him.”

Helen gasped and turned, seeing both of her sons rising to their feet, scowling at Michael.

Michael.

There hadn’t been a time when her heart hadn’t melted every time she saw his handsome face or wicked smile, and it was no different today.

She exited the booth, smoothing out imaginary wrinkles from her pastel skirt and top, and hurried over to where her sons had just finished eating their way through the menu, Kara and Maddie on her heels.  “Take your wives home. They’re both tired,” Helen told her sons sternly, glaring up at one and then the other.

Her sons frowned at her and looked at their wives, who were both grinning from ear to ear.  “We will.  We just want to have a quick discussion with this guy,” Sam said gruffly.

“You are going home.  Now.  Don’t argue with me, Samuel.  Take your brother and your wives home. Michael is a friend and I don’t want you harassing him.” She loved her sons, appreciated their protectiveness, but enough was enough.  She was still their mother.  Always would be.

Kara and Maddie claimed their husbands and started pulling Sam and Simon toward the door, both of her sons grumbling as they went and shooting warning looks at Michael as they exited.

Exasperated by the whole scene, Helen looked around the restaurant, glad that there were only a few customers who were looking at them curiously.  “Come to my office,” she told Michael briskly, walking toward the back of the restaurant. He followed closely behind her.  Not only could she smell his masculine scent, but she could feel his presence.  She’d always been acutely aware of him whenever he was in the restaurant, and today it was even worse.

Could the man who had been sending her such ardent and romantic notes with his gifts truly be Michael?  It didn’t seem possible, but her gut said it was, and her instinct was rarely wrong.

Why?  Why would he do it?

She let him enter her office before closing the door behind her, and slumped against the door, looking up at a grinning, masculine face that nearly made her melt into a puddle at his feet.  “I’m sorry,” she said quickly, embarrassed by Sam and Simon’s behavior, her face still rosy pink with mortification.

Michael Prescott was beyond handsome, his dark hair cut neatly and showing just a touch of gray at his temples.  He was tall and fit, dressed neatly in casual slacks and a polo shirt that stretched across a broad chest.  “No need to be sorry. You’re their mother.  Single and alone.  They should be protective. I was more than ready to answer all of their questions. They wanted to know if I was worthy of you.  Honestly, I’m not.  But I want to be,” he said in a husky baritone that vibrated through her body, causing her to shiver.

Straightening, Helen walked to her desk, her face aflame.  “So you really are my secret admirer,” she asked, astonished, sitting on the desk, letting her sandaled feet dangle as she stared at him.

“Not so secret anymore.  And I’ve always admired you,” he replied, walking to her and handing her the huge bouquet of red roses in his hand.

“But we’re friends,” she said desperately, his masculine scent starting to surround her as he moved closer.

“I’ve always wanted to be more than friends with you, Helen.  But your sons are way
of my league.  You’re way out of my league. Problem is, I don’t care anymore.  I don’t want to have to search you out, hoping to find you here.  I want you to be mine, in my home, close to me.  I want to come home to you every night and wake up to you every morning.”  He put his palms flat on each side of her body on the desk, trapping her.  “I want you, and I can’t wait any longer to have you.  Tell me you’ll give us a chance.”

Oh, God.  It was him.  It always has been him.  Michael Prescott was indeed her secret admirer, and the one man she had actually wanted it to be.  Never had she had any real hope that her mystery man would turn out to be Michael…but a woman could dream.  “I’m older.  You’re younger.  We can’t possibly—“

“We can,” Michael rumbled.  “The only thing stopping us is ourselves.  I figured that out a while ago.  I’ve spent years trying to get close to you.  Please don’t shut me out now.”

Helen glanced up into his emerald green eyes, her heart racing as she became intoxicated by his masculinity and male scent.  Michael had always been her friend, his lips readily smiling, his voice reassuring.  But he wasn’t looking at her like he was her friend now.  In fact, he looked downright dangerous, but in a sexy way that was nearly irresistible.

“Why the mystery?” she asked curiously, looking up a very dear, familiar face that she’d come to count on seeing often, the face of a man she knew she’d been in love with for years.  “Why didn’t you just say something?”

“Maybe I was afraid you didn’t feel the same way.  Maybe I’m still afraid you don’t.  But I had to do something to get your attention, get you to at least think about the possibility of getting romantically involved with a man.  I hope you’re not disappointed,” he said hoarsely, his eyes boring into hers with an intensity that Helen had never seen before.

He looked so vulnerable at that moment that she blurted out the truth.  “I wanted it to be you.  You’re the only one I was hoping it would turn out to be. But I didn’t think you felt the same way.”

Michael’s lips turned up into a delighted grin. “How could you not know? I thought I was pretty transparent.  I’ve never been able to go less than a day or two without seeing

Helen sighed.  “You’re young.  Probably too young for me.”

“You’re beautiful and have the energy of a woman half your age.  Try again,” he said in a low, sexy baritone.  “Tell me you don’t feel the same way I do.  It’s the only way you’re getting rid of me.  I’ve been telling myself you’re too good for me for years, but excuses don’t make the ache go away, Helen.”

“You’re the best man I’ve ever known,” she replied, jumping to his defense. Michael Prescott would be a man any woman would want to date.  But he chose her, had apparently chosen her a long time ago.

Go for it.  The past is in the past.  You know Michael’s a good man.  Start again. Try again.  He’s worth the risk.

“I couldn’t bear to lose your friendship,” she admitted quietly.

“You aren’t losing me as a friend.  You never will,” he replied confidently.  “But I want to be your lover, too.”

Helen flushed again, the thought of being close to Michael in that way enough to make her need to crank up her air conditioning and get a fan.  “What if it doesn’t work,” she whispered.

“It will.  Say you’ll give it a shot, Helen.  Please.  Don’t make me stay lonely without you,” he requested gruffly in her ear.

Helen shivered, his warm breath caressing the side of her neck.  “I don’t think I have a choice.  I do feel the same way, so I guess I’m not getting rid of you,” she admitted with a joyous laugh, dropping the flowers on her desk and wrapping her arms around his neck.

“You won’t want to get rid of me.  I’ll treat you so good that you’ll never want to walk away,” he told her sincerely, resting his forehead against hers, a relieved look on his face.

“I can’t believe you know about my sons and you still want to date me,” she told him honestly.

“We’ll come to an understanding eventually.  They need to know my intentions are honorable.”

“And are they?” Helen asked breathlessly, mesmerized by his incredible smile.

“Mostly,” he answered with a laugh.  “I can’t say that I don’t want you, but I’ll never offer anything less than my whole heart and marriage.”

“I don’t think we’re ready to talk about marriage, but I do want to give this a chance.  If I don’t, I’ll always regret it.”  She knew herself, and she had to give this a try.  “We can date.”

Michael groaned.  “I’ve been waiting for years.”

“We have to see if we’re compatible.”

“You know we are,” Michael argued.

Helen sighed, knowing she’d never be able to resist anything that Michael wanted for very long, because it was exactly what she wanted, too.  “Being friends and living together is two different things.”

“I think we should find out,” Michael answered, his irresistible grin widening. “Don’t be scared. I know what you’ve been through in the past, but I hope you know me well enough to know I’d never hurt you.”

Helen did know that, and she knew she was done fighting with herself.  Michael Prescott wanted her.  He actually wanted her.  And when she looked at him, she could see forever in his gorgeous eyes.  And the vision of their future looked pretty damn fantastic.

No more fear.  No more doubts.  For once in my life I’m taking exactly what I want without being afraid because of my past.

Her past was gone, and she was staring at her future.

Michael.

Other than her sons, Michael had always been the one man who’d been there for her whenever she needed him.  In truth, she’d trusted him for years.

“I’m not afraid,” Helen answered quietly, knowing it was true.  “But don’t you think you should kiss me first before we talk about getting married?”

“Finally,” Michael groaned, lowering his mouth to hers and doing just that until she came away breathless, and any doubt about compatibility, along with any rational thought, was completely gone.

Michael never stopped sending anonymous gifts with romantic notes, and they made Helen even happier because she knew exactly who had sent them.  And she knew they were sent with love.

Indiana Bernstein lives life in the fast lane. She burns through school in a

hurry to grow up and become the woman dating the man of her dreams.

Excerpt:

Indiana couldn’t believe he noticed her. It made her dizzy just to be next to this symbol of manliness. Or

maybe it was the sweet aroma of the cigar. There could be any reason for her dizziness.

Luckily Richard stopped talking for a moment. He puffed and twisted a cigar. Smoke twirled pleasantly in

the night breeze. “Your smile was all I could see in my rearview mirror today. I wish I always had a

smiling face ahead of me like that. But it’s your birthday and your night of wishes, isn’t it? All right, well,

here is your birthday present from me. I’ll let you drive my car around the block.”

He pulled keys from his pocket and held them up. Nothing ever shone so brightly for Indiana. They were

worn out but still glimmered in the moonlight. She couldn’t move or place trust in the promise. Richard

put the keys in her hand. He backed away with worlds of charm.

“Come on,” he said.

Indiana’s legs were willed to move. Encouragement from him was rare but always well placed. She got in

the car. Richard saw to her comfort with the steering wheel and moved the seat forward until her feet

were within proper proximity of the pedals.

He crouched down on his heels and eyed her gravely. “Now this car’s an automatic, so you only have

two pedals. Use the same foot for gas as you do for the brakes.”

Indy had already figured all of this out and rolled her eyes. Richard shut the driver’s door with a chuckle.

She watched him walk around the hood of the car. He stood out like the finest thing. The grey smoke

around him added charm. The black night made everything else drop away. The passenger door creaked

when it opened.

“I’ll have to remember to grease this hinge. It might ruin some poor girl’s eardrums. Whew, it’s a good

thing I found that out.” Richard looked at her like he had just avoided the biggest catastrophe.

Indiana reminded herself of her youth, but she silently vowed not to act uneducated. She waited for his

comfort to be assured.

He rolled down the window and hung the cigar outside of the car. He looked at her expectantly. “Do I

have to show you how to drive?” Indiana shook her head and quit staring at the impressive man beside

her.

The ignition turned easily. Indiana’s eyes rose appreciatively to the windshield. She had been obsessing

about cars her whole racing bred life. The lights were clicked on, and she smoothly reversed into the

night. The gas pedal moved slowly and the car responded. She sat back comfortably once she reached a

steady speed.

“If I were a judge I would say this isn’t your first time driving a car.” The glowing ember of cigar reflected

in the glass, and more whispers of smoke billowed into the air.

“It’s easy,” Indiana said defiantly. “I want to drive like you were driving.” Indiana let her eyes stray from

the road for emphasis.

“All right.” He threw the cigar out the window and rubbed his hands together excitedly. “Go ahead and

stop the car. Now keep your foot on the brake while you accelerate. When you see the revolutions of

the motor get up to three thousand, let off the brakes. You know which one is the RPM gauge, right?”

Indiana nodded excitedly.

“Okay, good.” Richard could command any situation. But his sharp attention to detail, while keeping a

relaxed stature, had Indiana ready to please. “Now remember you are guiding the car. Keep your hands

loose on the wheel, then it’ll be easier to keep the car straight.”

Indiana pushed her foot down on the gas. The thought of letting go of restraints got her excited. She did

what he told her to do. The car popped into sudden speed. A laugh escaped her body. Indiana didn’t

know if she had ever had so much fun.

“All right, that’s good, but you don’t need to go over fifty miles an hour.” Indiana slowed to the next

stop along the slightly inhabited road.

Del lifted his black cowboy hat. “Good evening, ma’am.”

She sputtered nervously, “What? Who says stuff like that anymore?”

“Del Ericson.” He put his hand out in greeting.

The woman took his hand and tilted her head. “I’m Lady, umm.”

“Lady Umm?” Del tried to figure her out. “Is Lady your real name or a title?”

“I don’t know.” She put her nose down and fumbled with the gas door. Lady’s tone of voice matched the distraught look in her eyes. Del thought he saw something deeper. She had a frozen smile attached to a poker face. Her expression got longer as she straightened to meet him.

“The gas station is closed, but you can still get gas. It accepts credit cards at night. I’m sure you’ll be fine.” Del gave a reassuring smile and began to turn away.

“Oh no.” Lady’s composure went to panicky tears. “Oh no.” She repeated herself sickly. Lady stomped a high heeled shoe on the concrete and it made a weak click. “Oh no.” She lifted her face to his. “I lose again.”

Lady had a little temper. Del considered her a loss. Then those three little words melted any preconceived notion of being spoiled or rich. She had said she lost again. Those words drew Del’s interest back. “What did you lose?” he asked.

“Anonymity. I lose to technology.” She humpffed and a piece of brown hair floated above her cheek. When the wayward strand settled, it fell somewhere indifferently. “I just can’t ever run away from my family. They will see my credit card and follow my every move.”

She looked up at Del. Her eyes held a serious look of discomfort. But there was more to it than that, it was a hopeless look about belonging. She grimaced like she wasn’t sure if he was a better place for her to turn toward or not.

Excerpt:

Susanna felt a nervousness that needed soothing. She had felt their itchy eyes upon her for the

last ten minutes. It was a lot for her to bear and entertain people in the middle of a long work day.

She smiled at them and carefully shut the door of her truck. Royce had stepped around the car and

was walking toward her. They met in the middle of the road and faced each other.

Once they were together, they both stood very straight and almost leaned into each other, in a

full posture and full attention sort of way.

“I wanted to thank you properly.” Royce’s voice was smooth on the wind.

Susanna smiled politely and said, “You’re welcome, but there is no need to thank me. It

happened days ago, and I’m pretty busy.”

“’ Pretty’ would be damn correct.” Royce smoothed his lapel like he wanted to touch something

and had just remembered his jacket at the last minute. “If you are always this pretty when you’re

busy, then you might be heading into pretty big trouble with me.”

Susanna’s breath hitched with his bluntness. Here it was already, his expectations and complete

comfort in being a lady’s man. Susanna readjusted herself to a more stand-off pose. “I wouldn’t

think that.” Susanna kept her face calm and honest. “You don’t look like the farming or ranching

Royce looked at her for a serious moment, before releasing a short laugh. “Neither do you.

Even right now, after working in a field, you look like you should be out shopping, or enjoying the

He looked down at her dress in apparent appreciation. She knew he was right to tell her she was

overdressed for yard work. Her dress was a Sunday dress. It was worn because of comfort, even if it

was over-stylish. Susanna had gotten used to being different, but it was a new experience to share

her work clothes with a man. The eyes that met Susanna’s were full of questions. Royce looked full

of information and testosterone. Susanna thwarted him with her brain.

“Well,” she said and looked over his shoulder toward his friends in the road, “it looks like

you’re an expert on the good life.”

Royce nodded with a jerk of his head. In her mind it was not the high compliment that Royce

was receiving. For the second time, Susanna got the impression that Royce demanded a lot from the

people around him, and extra care and planning for him was part of a package deal.

His friends were setting up chairs and a table in her private gravel road. Royce stepped aside

and put his arm out for Susanna. She had no choice but to walk to the table and be entertained by a

guest. It was an unusual feeling for her to be surprised by people’s actions, and it made her extra

aware. She stepped lightly on the road and looked at Royce.

He was smiling widely and ready to introduce her to his friends. “This is my driver, George.

You may remember him from the other night.” Royce held his hand out to the guy closest.

He smiled at Susanna when he held out his plain hand. “It’s nice to meet a woman with lots of

That was probably the best compliment he could have given her, and she smiled back widely.

Royce interrupted, “Hey, no stealing my girl.”

Susanna stiffened at the ownership he had already put on her. She looked at Royce quietly, but

he didn’t seem to notice. He was already pointing at the other two people who were putting a few

The introductions were made, and Susanna knew the ball was in her court. She felt like the

outsider, and the reverse of facts was heavy on her mind. She liked to entertain people in her home,

not in a field, and she looked around hesitantly.

“Come on,” Royce said, holding out his hand to the table. “Let’s sit down and talk.”

Susanna sat down in the nearest chair. Royce walked around to the other side of the table.

Instead of sitting across from her, he picked up the chair and moved it right beside her. He sat down

“Do you always pack a gun?” he asked.

“All of the time when I’m at home. The prairie has a lot of snakes, wolves, coyotes,

groundhogs.” Susanna shrugged for emphasis. “There are other things.”

“That’s very smart of you,” Royce said, nodding.

“I’m a safety girl,” Susanna said and clamped her jaw.

“That’s a very desirable trait in a woman.”

“You’re not from here, are you?” Susanna questioned.

“No, I was born in France.” Royce’s voice became more distant.

“I have houses all over the place.” Royce grinned and then slipped into a cowboy drawl. “I even

have a house in that there yonder city.” Hearing that voice come from a sophisticated man caught

Susanna off-guard, and she giggled.

The sound of Susanna laughing wiped the joke off of his face. He looked at her very seriously,

and a little in shock. She stopped laughing and looked at him. When she sat back, she let her whole

body completely relax. She lowered her eyes to his hands and tried to picture what he used them for.

Susanna couldn’t imagine him working. She raised her eyes back up to his face. Royce seemed to be

reading her mind, and he blurted out, “I’m a scientist.”

Susanna was in constant shock around him. She wondered if every day with him was a daze.

Royce moved his hand over to her knee and continued, “Actually, I am more like a

mineralogist. I study rocks, gems, dirt, and gold.” He picked up her boot and slipped her foot out of

it. “There are a lot of things I like, and once I like them, I study them.”

Review Quotes:

Rich Love from Zoe Adams was a great 4 star read. Romance, Hot alpha billionaire, Strong country girl.

He looked like a man who was used to having women swoon over him. Rich Love was a very enjoyable read.

If you like to read a great romance this is a book for you. Thank you Zoe Adams, I look forward to reading

This is my first book by this author, and I really enjoyed it. Susanna is a young widow, and lives a quiet

life. She first meets Royce when he hits a deer on his motorcycle. He’s rich, and not her type at all. Royce

feels an instant connection with her, and decides he has to make her his. She keeps him at arms length, and

he does his best to show her that he’s willing to get his hands dirty by helping her on the ranch. Will Royce be

able to get her to give him a chance?

Rich Love is a sweet read. The character development is very good, with a well written story line that

flows well. I couldn’t turn the pages quickly enough. There is a bit of a twist added in, and overall a fun and

consistent read. I can’t wait to read more by Zoe Adams.
