Chapter One

Single 3 by Lyra Paris

The morning sun gleamed in the distance, and I was smiling as I drove to work. Not because it was Monday, oh god no, but because there was something inside me that was ready to bubble over. Parker was to blame.

I parked my car, stepped out, then swung my computer bag over my shoulder and grabbed my badge to scan into the building. My heels echoed across the tile floor as I walked to the elevator with a bounce in my step. Everything was quiet—almost too quiet—but that was to be expected at 5:45in the morning. Most people arrived at work between seven or eight, but today I wasn’t most people. Today, I felt like a changed woman; a woman who knew what she wanted in a life, and was fully determined to keep her personal and business lives separate from one another.

I stepped into the elevator and, as I turned around, I saw Parker enter through the sliding doors. He hadn’t spotted me yet, so I took the time to admire him. My eyes narrowed in on the navy suit, those blue eyes, and that messy hair. He held two coffees in his hands and a smile on his face.

Why the hell was Parker so early?

As the elevator door began to close, I placed my palm out, causing the doors to shoot open. That was when he noticed me. After his eyes lingered over my body, he gave me a questioning look with his eyebrows scrunched together, then glanced down at his watch as he stepped in. The air seemed to evaporate from the small space, and my heart pounded in my chest. When Parker looked at me that way, it was so powerful the entire world around us seemed to stop. This was survival of the fittest.

“Rox. Morning,” he said with a wink, and handed me one of the steaming cups of coffee. He didn’t even have to comment on how early I was, because we both knew the oddity of it.

“Parker.” When his name left my lips, a smile met his eyes.

The smells of his soap and freshly-roasted coffee filled the elevator, and every emotion and feeling that I tried to forget over the weekend came back in full force. I’d say it was easy to forget him while we weren’t together, but that would be a lie. And with him practically shoulder-to-shoulder with me, even the thought of it was out the door. The elevator was empty and he used the time to get scandalously close. Any closer and my lips would be all over his, but I had to stay strong. Things had changed between us and, if this ride to our floor was an indication of how things would be today, I was completely screwed. Maybe that was a good thing.

Stop it, Rox.

“I thought since you never gave me the coffee date, that I’d bring it to you.”

The outside of his pinky grazed mine, which caused a humming sensation to shoot through me. His touch forced such a whirlwind of emotions upon me that, when the elevator door opened, I couldn’t move. I just stood there frozen. He turned around and gave me a cute little smile. “Coming?”

I was getting ready to rebut that little comment and pick my emotions from the elevator floor when my father rounded the corner.

“Roxane?” My dad glanced down at his watch, then back at me. “You’re early.”

“Not as early as you, Jeffrey. I know you woke the sun before you came in.”

He nodded his head and glanced over at Parker. “Morning, Parker.”

A smile met my father’s lips and touched his voice, but it didn’t stop my guilty conscience, which conveniently spoke loud and clear.

“We both have work that needs to be done since we were in New York last week,” I said calmly. It made sense, but the real reason was I couldn’t sleep.

Parker sipped his coffee and walked to his office with a huge grin on his face. I shook my head and walked to mine as my determination slithered down the drain.

The weekend passed like a blur; a smudge in time that almost seemed unreal. Parker mother effing Williams was a time thief, stealing my thoughts, dreams, and memories, and replacing them all with himself. I couldn’t stop thinking about the softness of his lips or how warm our bodies were when pressed together. It was almost hard for me to not mention the amazing sex. Parker was what every woman fantasized about. Damn it. I had to stop thinking about it, stop thinking about him.

Even though Parker promised to never leave me like he did in New York, I had to make sure that I would never allow a man to make me feel so vulnerable again. Ever. I reminded myself why I was single. Because being single meant no heartbreak. Didn’t it?

Just the thought of never speaking to him or having the opportunity to touch him again made me feel hollow inside. Though it was hard to admit, I couldn’t end it now. His talons had found my heart and pierced through it, claiming it as his. Which meant Stacey was right about my having it bad. To my defense, it wasn’t like I could make all the emotions stop with a snap. Even if I could, would I?

Parker agreed to give me time to think everything over, and it had been two full days since I’d felt his lips against mine. It would have been so easy to fall back into the routine that we had in New York. Our weekend could have been spent lazily tangled together in bed, but I refused. I had to pull the reigns back and prove, not only to myself, but also to Parker, that I had control.

I sat behind my desk and spun around with my coffee in hand. Being at the top of the building made it easy to stare at the purple bruised sky with glowing fluffy clouds. I sighed thinking about everything that happened, and turned when I heard my office door click closed.

“Pumpkin, I know you’re lost in the clouds, but I need to talk to you about your mother.”

“Dad. No. No. Talk to me about it later. Don’t ruin my day.”

“This can’t wait, hon. She’ll be flying in today and will be here to pick up the keys to the ranch around lunch. Tonight I’d really like for you to join us for dinner around eight p.m.”

A small tap echoed on the door, and my father and I both watched as Parker crossed the room with a file folder full of papers.

“Dad, I’m not going. That’s final. It’s not a discussion.”

“Here are a few amendments with signatures that will need to be reviewed before the one o’clock meeting today.” Parker handed me the folder.

I gave him a brief smile, then narrowed my eyes back on my dad who didn’t budge. My heart felt like it would beat straight out of my chest in anger at just the thought of seeing her. She left me as a child. I didn’t have a mother to help me get ready for dance competitions, or a mother to guide me in my teenage years, because she was so selfish. I wasn’t one to hold grudges, but some things just weren’t easily forgivable.

I could tell there was something Parker wanted to say, and the same with my father.

“I’ll let you get back to work. I really need you there.” Dad walked out the door, and Parker stood there with his hands in his pockets. I gave him a little smirk, then opened my email. Parker sat in the chair across from me, and shot me a little smile with an eyebrow cocked. “I’ve missed you.”

How was it possible that those three little words could be powerful enough to pull me from my dark thoughts?

I tried to hold back the thump in my heart and the smile on my lips. “No you haven’t.”

He stood and placed his hands flat on my desk, then leaned across it. His face was only inches from mine, and his breath painted across my cheeks. I looked up into his eyes, and that was when his lips dipped down to gently brush mine. I wanted to get lost in him, but I couldn’t. Before the kiss could connect, I scooted my chair back and stood.

“Parker.”

He walked around my desk and put a finger over my lips.

“Do you remember the first time we were intimate in this office? Every time I step inside, I am taken back to that moment. The look on your face. Your quiet pants in my ear. Do you remember what I told you?”

I opened my mouth to speak, but he interrupted me.

“I said to not ruin that moment. So don’t ruin this one.”

He moved my hair from my shoulder and gently touched his nose to mine. Then we were kissing—kissing like we couldn’t breathe without the other one, kissing like it was our last moments on earth. Everything seemed to be at a standstill. When our lips broke apart, I was almost gasping for air, then a sense of loss overcame me.

“Parker, we can’t do this here.”

“Roxane, you can’t deny me.”

I whispered, “It’s against my rules.”

“I’ve already broken all your rules, and I’ll keep breaking them over and over again. I’ll never give up on you, and I’m not going anywhere. I’ll give you all the time that you need to think. I’ll give you all the space you want. But being around you is a challenge, because all I want to do is lay you down on that couch and make love to you. I want to taste you. I want to smell your skin on mine. You do this to me, Rox.”

Parker somehow knew exactly what to say to halt my words. I swallowed them down and my face softened. “Parker.”

A knock rang out on my door and the door clicked open. Parker took a step back, and I straightened my hair as Jane entered. A smile immediately hit her lips when she saw Parker, and a big grin took over her face when she looked at me.

I cleared my throat, then said, “Yes?”

“Mr. Williams, I wasn’t aware you were in here. Roxane, I need to speak to you about the new secretary.” Her insinuations sliced through the air. See, the thing about Jane was not much got past her. She was like a hound dog. She knew all of the gossip, and what was real and what wasn’t.

“Mr. Williams was just leaving. Please, have a seat.”

Parker sent me a silent message that said this wasn’t over, and I knew that was true. My face was flustered, and I knew his words were written all over my body. When the door snapped closed behind him, Jane interlocked her fingers and scooted close to my desk. She narrowed her eyes at me and opened her mouth, then immediately closed it.

Please, Jane. Please don’t ask me about Parker.

“How was New York?” Her question was simple, and my answer would have to be as well.

“Great. The weather was nice. Jason McCaul was an ass as always,” I said.

I could tell her wheels were turning, and that she wanted to pry. But she didn’t. Thankfully.

“I won’t keep you much longer. I set a meeting, but forgot about your New York trip. About Christina . . . she comes in late and refuses to listen to instruction. She doesn’t care about deadlines or dress code. She just isn’t secretary material.”

I thought back to her interview and how well she spoke. For sure I thought she would be a homerun. What had happened? I glanced over at the clock on the wall and realized it was a little past seven.

“What time is she supposed to be here?” I asked.

“In the next five minutes,” Jane said.

“I’ll take care of it. No problem. Thanks for coming to me about this. I really appreciate it.”

She stood and smiled at me. Her hair was in a messy bun, and she tucked little strands of grey hair behind her ear. “I’ve heard your mother will be here around lunch.”

I swallowed. She knew my feelings on the subject. Jane had helped wipe away many of my teenage tears. “I’ll let you know when she’s here, okay?” It was her little way of protecting me.

“Thank you, that means a lot to me. I really don’t want to see her. At all.” She smiled, then turned to head out. Before she opened the door, she said without turning around, “I told you he was a looker.”

I walked beside Viddy as we walked down the hallway from the plane’s exit.

My eyes were on Trance, who was, indeed, drunk. He was barely putting one foot in front of the other, and I honestly didn’t know how he was walking with the amount of alcohol he’d consumed.
He hadn’t looked that drunk when he’d been sitting; although, once he’d stood up that all had changed.

Miller, however, had been expecting it because he caught him before his knees even had a chance to buckle.

“What’s the deal here? Why does he hate to fly so much?” I asked, turning my gaze to Viddy.

Her mouth curled in the corner as she said, “I don’t think he has a ‘reason.’

More, I just think it’s a phobia of his. He says he’s had it since he was a teenager when 9-11 happened. I don’t blame him. That day affected us all.

Some large, and some small. But still just as important.”

I nodded.

I could see how that’d scare him. Hell, I couldn’t say that it hadn’t crossed my mind as the plane started taking off.
We stayed silent as we walked down the hallway, and into the main part of the airport.
I could hear boots clunking behind me, and I looked over my shoulder to see Silas there.
Silas, I’d found out, was the president of the motorcycle club that Trance belonged to.

He was in his early fifties, from what I’d been told, but the man could totally pass for late thirties. I hadn’t realized he was the father of Sebastian. Another man I’d met only today.
Sebastian and Silas looked as if they could be brothers, instead of father and son.

Silas smiled at me when he caught my eyes on him, and gave me a wink.

“You ready to meet the parents?” He asked.

I blinked, then started getting nervous.

Of course, it’d occurred to me that I was meeting Miller’s parents…but I hadn’t thought about how important it was…this initial meeting. I wanted to make a good impression.

Which was why, when I saw the bathroom just before we got to the baggage claim where we were to be meeting, I darted inside and went straight towards a stall. Where I promptly started to hyperventilate.
I sat down and buried my face in my hands, leaning forward to try to circumvent the panic I could feel rising at an alarming rate.
What if they didn’t like me?
Would Miller think differently of me?

Hell, Miller didn’t feel anything for me. How could he?
He hadn’t made so much as an ass grab since I’d forced him to fuck me.

The door to the stall opened and I halted my sobs.

Silent tears tracked down my face as I waited for whomever was outside the stalls to finish the fuck up so I could resume my sob fest.
Except whomever it was didn’t just leave.
“What’s wrong?” Miller said from above me.
I screamed.

Like a little bitch.
“What the hell, Miller! What have I told you about boundaries?” I yelled, yanking my pants up and turning to glare up at him.

He started to grin unrepentantly at me before he saw the tears in my eyes, then he frowned.

“What’s wrong?” He demanded.

Then he literally jumped over the stall.

wasn’t sure how he did it, but one second he was on the other side, and the next he was gathering me into his arms.

“I don’t want to talk about it,” I said lamely.

He chuffed. “Get over it and tell me what the fuck is wrong.”
Always so elegant, my Miller.

“What if they don’t like me?” I whispered fiercely.

His eyes softened as he cupped my face. “They’ll like you, honey. You’ve already got my brothers wrapped around your finger. And we’ve got our parents wrapped around ours. Trust me, it’ll all be okay. I wouldn’t have brought you here if I didn’t think they’d like you.”
I closed my eyes and leaned my head against his chest.
“Okay,” I sighed. “Let’s go.”
He took my hand, stopped for a squirt of the hand sanitizer dispenser, and pulled open the door to the bathroom.

I hadn’t even made it out three feet past the threshold when a barrel of energy hit me, gathering me up in her arms and pulling me into her.

“Oh,” the woman, who I guessed was Miller’s mother, said. “I’ve been waiting for you for thirty five years.”
I blinked. “Thirty five years?”
She nodded. “The moment I had Miller, I knew I was only ever going to have boys. But I knew that one day Miller would get married, and I’d have a daughter.”

“Hey, what about me?” Viddy teased from the chair beside Trance’s slumped form.
“I like her,” his mother whispered. “But you are exactly as I’d pictured my daughter in law to be.”
Then she turned around to Viddy. “No offense.”
She smiled. “None taken, Sloan. I know Miller’s your favorite.”
Sloan, Miller’s mother, nodded. “That’s true,” turning back to me. “He is my favorite.”

My jaw dropped. “You have a favorite child?”

She nodded. “He’s the only one that I got drugs with when I was birthing them. I don’t care what the heck you say. You don’t forget. You remember everything about the birthing experience, and those other two kids left me with scars. Horrible, ugly scars.”
My eyes widened and I turned my face up to Miller’s to see him smiling.

That smile was contagious, though.

It caught on my face, and when I turned back to Sloan I said, “I think I’m going to love you.”

She beamed. Positively beamed.

Blurb

Dysfunctional empires were made to fall.

I am Caesar. Broken and conflicted. I am a man who gives false goodness to those who crave it. I provide solace to the ones who beg to be saved, giving them the goodbyes they want. But, my quiet little world is about to be shattered by the whispers from heaven and hell.

I am Mateo. Unlovable and unworthy. I am the boy everyone runs from. I keep love close to me in little jars of perfection, reminding me of a thousand goodbyes I never had to say, because I left them before they could leave me.

I am Svetlana. Dirty and Used. Birthed into brutality while still trying to comprehend my version of normal. I am an injured lamb, eaten by filthy wolves day after day. Just as salvation seems like it’s within reach, a goodbye from this awful world is all that I wish for.

Excerpt

“We need to go, Lettie doll.”

Why? Why does he call me that? Why does he make me feel like I want to keep living for tomorrow? I hate it! But I have no choice as I stare into his black eyes. They draw me in and suck the wind from my lungs, once begging for death, now craving life. The tearing I remembered from before with Pavel is instantly replaced with lust, throbbing between my legs as I feel the urge to fall to my knees and kiss his bloody boots to show him how much I praise him. He holds my heart in his hands. He knows this, but something tells me that his heart is in the balance, too.

Girls like me hold no power. I took life. I took one of his dolls because they held something I never will. Peace. Order. Death. I broke. The little, quiet girl who let herself be raped day after day let herself break into a million pieces as the hard dick pleasured her while her lover loved him more. I thought for sure I would be reprimanded for my actions, but a softness I haven’t seen before is present in his eyes. And maybe something else. Worry? Is that worry? Is his face red? I find myself wanting to comfort him, but he doesn’t like to be touched. My warm, trembling hands make him feel uncomfortable. The push and pull between life and death, love and loss, is making me mad.

This one deserves more than 5 Stars!!!!!

Wow just WOW!!! I can’t get over how this book took me. If you love a book that is going to take you and make you feel this is the one to do just that. The emotions that you have are beyond amazing. You are going to want to cry, scream and tell them to get their heads out of there asses.
I have read books that have tugged at my heart before, Edie and Donny’s story will do much more then tug at your heart. This read made me look at a lot of things in life and how we all get caught up in blame others for our shortcoming.
Edie comes back to a family she left behind two years ago. She is hoping to mend the broken road that she created when she left. After finding herself, she comes back to fight for the family she loves to the ends of the earth.
Donny is everyone’s dream man he has provided for his family, giving, caring and loving. He gives everything he has and more.
Edie gives her all to get her family back and even breaks her own heart to prove she is back to stay. Enduring Donny’s anger and hurt Edie refuses to back down and give up knowing she needs her kids back in her life.
I can’t get my mind wrapped around the depression someone can go into. I know it real and it hurts but to see it addressed with Edie story makes you wanted to cry and tear your heart out for those that suffer through this. I LOVE this story and will be one that is added to my highly highly recommended books. Amazing Job Leddy!!!!

EXCERPTS

He slapped his palm against the door behind my head, interrupting me and causing me to flinch. He boxed me in with the door to my back and his solid form in front. His forearm was so close to my face I could feel the heat radiating off it. My already clenched heart grew even tighter in my chest and I had a hard time breathing, as if the world had lost its supply of oxygen and I had to fight in order to find some. I’d never seen Donnie like this before and it both scared and saddened me.

“No…you don’t know, Edie. You don’t know a damn thing. I thought maybe you’d be gone a day and then come back. That didn’t happen and so I thought maybe a week. After a week, you’d surely come to your senses and be ready to come home. A week came and went and you were still gone. You were still not answering my calls, my messages, or my emails. So, okay…a month. A month is a really long break, but who knows, maybe you just really needed it.

“The kids asked about you every single day for that month. Every. Fucking. Day. I tried like hell to spare them from knowing you had abandoned them because the last thing I wanted was for you to come home and have them look at you differently. Yeah…I’m that fucking pathetic that after you ran away, I still tried to spare your feelings. Shortly after a month, they’d go a day or two without talking about you or asking where you were. I’d lie in bed at night and realize they hadn’t mentioned you, and it broke my heart. But do you know the moment in time when my heart stopped beating? When it ceased to beat in my chest? When my life went from falling apart to being completely obliterated?” he asked through tight lips that only grew tighter with each following question.

I shook my head, unable to answer. I didn’t want to hear it, the truth. I had asked him to talk, but I hadn’t been prepared for what he’d say. I wasn’t ready to hear about the pain and anguish I had inflicted upon the people I loved more than anything. But I’d asked for it, so the only thing I could do was stand there and bear it.

“Mikey was at the kitchen table coloring while I was making dinner. This was somewhere between month one and month two. Livvy was helping me, watching the water to let me know when it started to boil. Mikey brought over his piece of paper with random marks of green crayon and held it out to me. He was so proud of it.” Donnie’s voice had grown quiet yet remained hard as he retold a story I was sure I didn’t want to hear. “As always, I asked him what it was, preparing to give him my usual praise about how amazing it was and how I had a little artist on my hands. He pointed to a particular line and said, ‘me’ and then pointed to another one and said ‘mama.’ I hesitated for a moment since I hadn’t expected that—his usual art at the time had been unrecognizable doggies and trucks. Nothing more than scribbles of crayon that he believed to be something else. In the time I hesitated, Livvy decided to tell him that his mama was gone. She told him that his mama didn’t love him anymore because she left and wasn’t coming back. She was two and a half, Edie! Two years old, telling her little brother that their mother didn’t love them anymore!”

I gave in and succumbed to the grief that his words inflicted. Without moving, I allowed my tears to run free, to flow without a fight. I couldn’t help the feeling of complete inadequacy that filled me and poured out of me with every tear that made its way down my face.

“So now that I’ve talked to you, is there anything you want to say? Because once I turn around and walk away from you, there won’t be any more talking.”

This is the second book by S. Donahue that I have had the privilege to read.  After the first book I read and enjoyed I wanted to read more of her work. Let’s say I was not let down. This is a great story and one that you will fall in total love with.

Brad is the men of all men. When he loves he loves hard. Caring, devoted and willing to give everything when it comes down to it.  He has been affected by his dad’s death not really wanting to face what is cost him in life and place the blame on someone else. He meets Gia, knows there is something special there but not sure what that something is.

Gia is a well-rounded attorney that is very independent. She has suffered some pretty hurtful things in the past that has forced her to push everything in to her career.

This two take off and keep you entertained through the whole book.

Light fun and fast read.

Looking forward to Gia’s sister’s story next!!!

5eae1-synopsis

It’s the 1920s and Clarissa Hardy is the very definition of the sometimes scandalous New Woman. The moment Clarissa finds herself free of the shackles of her suffocating virginity, she is keen to explore new territories. Curious and courageous, Clarissa books passage on a luxury liner bound for England. After receiving a titillating education from a fellow libidinous lady traveler, Clarissa disembarks in London and, dressed to the nines in her beaded and fringed fashions, proceeds from adventure to amorous adventure, reveling in delightful debauchery. Clarissa knows exactly what to do with her body. It’s what she learns about her heart that ultimately takes her by surprise!

eaadc-excerpt

Clarissa, still leaning against Eleanora, opened her eyes.

Kono was standing before her, completely naked.

“I will fuck with you now,” he said. As Eleanora had described in her letter, Margaret stepped forward and took Kono’s large cock in her hands. She squeezed and massaged it, holding it out as Moya stepped forward, bringing it to life with sucks and licks. Kono’s cock was the longest, thickest cock Clarissa had ever seen. He smiled broadly as he approached her.

William looked mischievously at Andrew. “What say we try to both go in at once? How’s that, Clarissa? Do you think you could take it? Two cocks in a bush?”

The young men laughed. Clarissa laughed and spread her legs. “Why not?” she said gamely, “Have a try!”

Both on their knees, each man hoisted one of Clarissa’s legs. Clarissa felt herself being stretched as the two cocks were pushed together into her cunt. At last Andrew collapsed in laughter. “Stand back, old chap,” he said to William, “I’ve not had my turn yet. Clarissa, prepare to be fucked once again!” Clarissa smiled up at him. Andrew took both her legs and bent them up over her shoulders, ramming his cock home as he did so. He fucked her with a passion that brought the heat of another climax washing over her again, pumping in and out until he fell over her with a groan.

The plump, blushing orbs were exposed on Clarissa’s lap. “You have a most adorable bottom!” exclaimed Clarissa. She felt them all over, squeezing and pinching, kneading and spreading them, until she herself felt a sudden surge of passion. Slowly, slowly, she ran her index finger down between those sweet mounds until she could feel the wet place and the pulsing clit. Sinking three fingers into Eleanora once again, she fucked her with her fingers until the older woman squirmed and gasped. Clarissa suddenly ceased and withdrew her fingers. Reaching for a small wooden box on the table, she took out the dildo, poured oil on it and inserted it deep into Eleanora. “Be still, Eleanora,” said Clarissa, “I am going to leave it in you while I examine you. I want to see everything about you.”

cf0d4-authorprofile

Who would have thought the antics of a hot little number from the Roaring Twenties would cause me to have to divulge so many specifics about myself! Well, you asked for it. I’m Chloe Gillis, Boston Irish to my core. I was born in Cambridge. I’m an only child. My dad is a history professor at Harvard. My mother, from County Tipperary, was a student of his before she became his wife. She’s an anthropologist and spends half her time digging in peat bogs in Ireland. The other half of her life she spends being wife to my father, flirting with post-docs, and waiting for my husband and me to get busy and give her grandchildren.

Believe me, we’re busy, but children are a ways off. My husband is fifteen years older than me, but judging by his abilities and aptitudes, I think he’ll last awhile. My husband owns a large accounting firm in Boston and bears a remarkable resemblance to Jeffrey Dean Morgan, which is very nice. Oh, this is supposed to be about me, isn’t it!

I am an academic librarian at Boston College. It’s nice because academics are still important there. Anyway, physically, I’m small, with long blonde hair, which I wear in a tight bun when I work. I guess I look a little like Clarissa. In fact, the book flowed so smoothly at times, that I got to thinking that she might be an ancestor, and the story imparted to me by some sort of genetic memory.

My husband and I live in a vintage Victorian in Cambridge not far from Harvard Square with an Irish wolfhound, a French bulldog, and three cats. I know, I know. We’re reaching critical mass in the city pet department, but they add a lot to our lives, which are really quite regimented. The worlds of accounting and library science couldn’t be more disciplined, organized, or, frankly, dull.

I think Clarissa called to me from the quiet of the stacks. Sitting at my desk, staring blankly down the dim hallways of books, or into the depths of my screen saver, which is a picture of me with my mother, digging in the peat in Ireland, I daydream about meeting my husband back at our house later in the evening. I picture myself going into the house. He’s already at home, and he takes me around the waist with his big hands, pins me against the wall, and reaches up under my skirt.

Maybe it’s the intellectual order of our jobs, binding our libido every day, that makes us give in to our more corporeal urges when we’re alone. At any rate, one daydream leads to another and so Clarissa and her adventures were born. She just took it farther than we ever have!
