Tate chuckles as he picks up a tomato and throws it

to me. Thanking my quick reflexes, I catch it mid-air.

“Here, cut those,” he says, gesturing to the pile of

tomatoes already stacked on the bench next to where he is preparing bacon.

I pop the tomato down and head to wash my hands.

Once I return to the counter, Tate approaches me with an apron and wraps his arms

around me as he ties the strings in front. We get stuck into it and work in

companionable silence for the next few minutes.

“I’m sorry about the other day,” he says, not pausing

for a second from the bacon he is cutting.

“I know,” I respond.

“I’m glad we’re okay.”

“Me, too.”

Silence descends once more, and we continue our

tasks before Tate speaks again. “The other day, you said how you’ve never felt an

instant connection with someone before.”

“Yeah?” I ask warily, wondering if I freaked him

out.

“I didn’t get to tell you that I feel the same. When

we’re together, it feels right.”

“Yeah … it does.”

Even though we don’t mention another thing about

it, the silence doesn’t come again as the shots keep flowing and the music on the old

radio gets louder and louder. We are laughing and carrying on and there is more

‘accidental’ touching on both sides.

‘Black Widow’ by Iggy Azalea and Rita Ora flows

through the speakers and I sigh in happiness. “I love this song.” I leave my tomatoes

behind to shake my hips all over the kitchen to the beat, singing along with the

lyrics.

Warmth covers my back as two strong hands land

on my hips. Tate pushes into me from behind and moves his hips along with my own

or forces my hips to move along with his—I’m not sure.

“You’re so fucking sexy, Harper,” he whispers into

my ear. “I won’t be able to keep this friendship platonic if you keep shaking your ass

like that in my kitchen.” His warm breath flows over my collarbone as he nuzzles my

neck and goosebumps break out across my skin. Tate must notice as he lifts his head

and slowly peppers small, light kisses along the crease of my shoulder.

My head rolls back onto his shoulder, and my body

liquefies at the intimate and sensual touch. He’s breaking down my walls. My

common sense. He’s slowly softening me, melting me so he can mould me as he

pleases, and it’s working.

As the realisation hits me, I jump out of Tate’s arms,

grab hold of his hand, and pull him to the middle of the kitchen. I smile seductively

at him and wink. “I’ll just have to keep you in line and focused then.”

He throws his head back and laughs, allowing me to

ignore the moment and lead him around the centre workbench as we shake,

shimmy, and wiggle to ‘Shake it Off’ by Taylor Swift, which is now playing on the

stereo.

Excerpt

“Andrew?” I question as I reach the table.

“Yes. Harper, hello.” He shakes my hand and the first thing I notice are his warm eyes. They are gentle and sincere and I feel instantly comfortable with him. “Take a seat, please.”

He gestures to my seat before pulling it out for me to sit in. I smile up at him in thanks for the chivalrous action as I slide into the chair.

During our emails back and forth this week, Andrew and I had figured out that we are from similar small towns not far from each other. We laugh about all the misguided town folk and the classic ‘types’ every town has. The town clown who has thought of every invention under the sun, the do-gooder mayor, the old lady gossip group, and the crazy minister and his family. Of course I didn’t laugh at that last one, as true as it is, being the daughter of a minister and all.

“So what do your parents do?” Andrew asks.

“Umm.” I stall looking for a distraction, not wanting to make to him feel bad.

“What can I get you guys?” Tate offers and I’m grateful for the interruption.

“Oh gosh I haven’t even looked yet,” Andrew says as he picks up the menu from the table.

“Just the usual for me please.” As my eyes reach Tate’s his are wide with horror. I sit upright at the urgency in his expression wondering what the hell is going on.

He nods his head in Andrew’s direction and I glance over. Andrew is studying the menu oblivious to mine and Tate’s silent conversation.

I look back at Tate giving him a ‘what’ look as he scratches his head then stiffly nods back in Andrew’s direction.

I sigh frustrated and look back at Andrew. He looks up from his menu and smiles at me before turning to Tate and placing his order.

I still don’t see a problem and look back to Tate with a ‘just fucking tell me’ look.

He begins running his hand through his hair as he harshly nods in Andrew’s direction again. I don’t even bother looking at Andrew again, knowing I’m not going to see anything different than before.

With wide eyes and a clenched jaw, I get out through gritted teeth, “I think that’s all.”

Tate sighs heavily, clearly frustrated and storms away from the table.

I shake my head and when I turn back to Andrew he is staring at me in confusion. “Sorry,” I giggle embarrassed he witnessed that final interaction between Tate and me.

“No worries.” He is sweet but his voice is wary. Tate and I probably looked like two mute idiots. How humiliating.

Andrew seamlessly continues our conversation. I use this opportunity to study him and search for the meaning of Tate’s irrational display.

I didn’t really focus on Andrew’s features before. He’s not ugly, but he’s definitely not in the same calibre as Tate or Glenn.

Now that I’m looking closer at him, there is something off about his looks. I can’t put my finger on it but something doesn’t fit. It has to be something small like his eyes aren’t in line or his facial features are too far apart, maybe bad teeth or ears that are too big or small, but I can’t see any of that. All his features seem symmetrical and in proper proportion to his face, but something is definitely not right.

Out of the corner of my eye I see Tate flailing his arms about. I shoot a glance his way trying not to be noticeable only to see he is frantically running his hand through his hair before tugging on the ends. No, tugging is too tame, he is pulling hard on his hair.

I glance around the café and no one has seemed to notice Tate’s complete and mental breakdown. He’s lost it. Maybe it’s all the coffee fumes, they are really strong in here.

When I look back towards Tate he is on his way over to the table carrying our hot drinks. I roll my eyes at his determined stare and wonder what antics he has planned for us this time.

Tate doesn’t falter as he strides towards the table and proceeds to drop a hot cup of coffee all over the table and into Andrew’s lap. I gasp in shock at what is unfolding in front of me. Andrew jumps from his seat, squealing like a small girl. I watch horrified as his hair falls off his head and lands on the table in front of me.

My mouth drops open as I just stare at Andrew’s toupee lying in spilt coffee. Glancing up at Andrew I see the heat rising on his face and shiny bald head. I smile awkwardly at him as I pick up his hairpiece and hold it out to him as if it’s a pair of dirty underwear and I can’t stand to touch it.

He quickly swipes it from my hand and places it on his head, but not before I notice his whole head, bright red in mortification. It’s like a beacon calling in planes for landing. Andrew stares at me, his hairpiece on backwards and coffee leaking from it, dripping all down his face.

“I’m so sorry Andrew,” I whisper, as I place both my hands over my mouth. Shit, I can feel the laughter rising.

“No, I’m sorry Harper.” My gut churns on his behalf at the humiliation he must be feeling. The silence of the café surrounds us, lucky it’s not overly busy at this time of night. Andrew glares at Tate who smiles and raises his hands innocently, before Andrew storms out of the café not breathing another word, just leaving a trail of coffee in his wake.

“You’re welcome,” Tate says casually as he pulls a clean chair up to the table, before relaxing back into it and crossing his ankles in front of him.

Synopsis

Brooke Willis had everything she ever wanted: a happy marriage, volunteer placement at the art gallery, and the promise of starting a family with the man of her dreams.

Saxon Reed had everything he ever thought he needed: a successful career, nice cars, expensive apartment, and more money than he knew what to do with.

After losing her husband Brooke insists on taking over his company to keep his dreams alive. Struggling in an industry she knows nothing about, Brooke turns to Saxon, her husband’s best friend and business partner, for guidance and support. Their mutual grief, and Saxon’s need to look after his best friend’s wife, creates a connection beyond just business.

Can Brooke take over the company and find a new life without saying goodbye to the past? Can Saxon protect and care for Brooke without scaring her away?

What happens when your heart doesn’t listen to your head? When lines are crossed and boundaries are pushed?

“Life goes on, whether you choose to move forward and take a chance in the unknown or stay behind, locked in the past, thinking of what could’ve been. I don’t want to live in the past anymore. I’m so lonely; there’s nothing for me here.”

Excerpt

As the elevator doors open, I hear the familiar hyena laugh. I can’t help but break out in a wide smile of my own.

Exiting the elevator, I see Brooke leaning back in an office chair that normally belongs in the staff room, her feet propped up on the front desk.

Harper and Brooke are laughing so hard they don’t hear the elevator open or me approaching the desk. “Working hard, ladies?” I ask, cocking an eyebrow at them.

Harper sits up and straightens her face, places her glasses back on, and shuffles some papers on her desk. Brooke, on the other hand, tries to sit up and ends up leaning back further and tilting the chair, her arms flying about trying to gain some balance while her feet are still propped up on the desk.

I move quickly to get behind the reception desk and push the back of her chair back up. Brooke goes flying forward and suddenly stills. Her breath hitches, and I know she just shit herself. She places her feet on the floor and straightens her skirt. “Fuck,” she breathes out. I raise an eyebrow at her, and she covers her mouth. “Sorry,” she says with a guilty look on her face.

“Shall we?” I say as I hold my hand towards the elevator, while using everything I have not to laugh.

She stands, straightening her outfit again, and makes her way to the elevator. I look back to Harper who looks away abruptly and pretends she’s typing something on her computer. I shake my head as I follow Brooke.

As soon as the doors shut, she starts, “Saxon, I am so sorry. I was just saying hello to everyone. I feel I can’t just start working without saying hello to the staff.” Raising my eyebrows at her, she begins to backtrack. “Fine,” she sighs. “I was really enjoying seeing everyone and having a laugh. I can’t remember the last time I laughed like that. It felt so good being with people and just talking nonsense.” She’s rambling on, and I can tell she’s sorry and elated all at once.

“Brooke, you don’t have to explain yourself to me. I am not your boss; you’re the owner, and this is yours. If you want to sit and chat with the staff all day, sit and chat with the staff all day.” I smile down at her and she looks up at me, face scrunched and eyes narrowed.

“Well, what was all that back there then?”

“I just wanted to fuck with you,” I say bluntly, no humour in my tone and a blank expression covering my face.

“Saxon! What the hell? You scared Harper, you know,” she says seriously. I laugh loudly as she scowls at me.

“Good. I am her boss, and she was totally out of line. We’re not paying her to lounge about with her friends.”

Brooke laughs. “Seriously, though, I’m sorry. I know you cleared your afternoon for me, and I do really want to see the place and get onto work.”

The elevator doors open. “Well come on then, Willis, you’ve got lots to learn.”

Excerpt

I spot the familiar lady standing at the next stall, although she has aged considerably. “Oh My God. Sax you have to try this fudge!” I yell as I pull him along to the stall. “Twelve pack mixed please,” I ask the lady as Saxon raises his eyes at me. “What?”

“That good huh?” He smirks.

“It’s the best. I used to get it all the time when I was a kid and Dad would bring me here,” I tell him excitedly. The lady who has been manning this stall and making these delicious sweet treats for as long as I can remember hands me my bag of goodies and Saxon is paying her before I can even reach for my purse. “Thanks.”

He smiles down at me. “If it makes you smile like that I’ll buy everything she’s got.”

Heat warms my cheeks and I smile shyly.

“Well done son,” the vendor says to Saxon. “A happy wife is a happy life.”

“Don’t I know it,” he winks at her. I laugh and shake my head as he pulls me away from the stall.

“Come on, you have to try some,” I say holding the bag right up to his face.

“How can you still be eating after our late lunch and all the food samples you’ve had in the last couple hours?” he asks laughing at me.

“There’s always room for fudge,” I answer him seriously. “Besides I’d rather be fat and happy than skinny and hungry.”

Saxon’s face breaks into that huge grin that melts my insides. “That’s what I love about you Brooke.”

“What? That I’m fat?” I ask with mock horror.

“Shut up,” he laughs as he playfully shoves me, nearly into another shopper, before quickly grabbing me and pulling me into him. He wraps his arms around my shoulders and places his head into my neck. “Shit, I’m sorry Brooke. You’re so damn little I forget how strong I am.” His voice is serious but I can feel the laughter rolling through him from the quick breaths on my neck and his shaking shoulders. Lifting my hand I slap him across the back of the head and he quickly pulls away from me, laughter still written on his face.

I take another piece of fudge and stuff it into my mouth before huffing at him and walking away.

“Don’t eat too much fudge, we’ve still got dinner,” he scolds me.

“Yes Dad.” I hear his quick footsteps catching up to me and I duck away as he nears me. I’m not nearly quick enough, probably because I’m more concerned about the bag of fudge in my hand, and he easily wraps his arm around my shoulders, holding me tight against him. I reach into my bag of fudge and go to shove one in his mouth. He grabs my wrist before I can make contact and looks down at me before he brings it to his mouth. He eats the fudge out of my fingers painfully slow. Purposefully torturing me as revenge. My body quakes with need and I squeeze my thighs together trying to alleviate the pressure he is building there. He hasn’t taken his eyes off mine and I stand there stunned, in a trance of lust. When he’s finished nibbling the fudge and my fingers, he slowly licks them clean. Taking each one into his mouth and slowly sucking, licking and nibbling it.

He releases my hand from his mouth and intertwines our fingers. “You’re right, that’s fucking good fudge,” he says calmly and pulls me along, as if he didn’t just turn me into a puddle of mush.
