Murder Of Crowes Synopsis

When the life of a family dies, what happens to their secrets? Are the memories of their vitality stamped out by the darkness? Are their heirlooms and photographs stowed away, hidden from view? Can the flicker of a candle’s flame reveal the secrets of a bygone life? Or will the damp and the darkness squelch the truth forever?

The Elkhart Bugle called it A Murder of Crowes. It was a clever play on words. A sinister spin on the traditional meaning of the phrase. A murder of crows – three crows gathered in unison. The trio are seen as an omen, a threat. The three stand in judgment over their peers. Self-declared kings of paupers. But on November 22, 1967, one journalist cloaked the phrase in further darkness when Ellis Crowe and two of his adult sons, Warren and Jasper Crowe, were murdered just moments after they had finished their evening dinner.

There were witnesses who had watched the ordeal play out and all evidence and accounts, all but one, led straight to Nathaniel Crowe. He was the youngest son of Ellis and Victoria Crowe. After his arrest, Crowe Towers was emptied of its residents for the first time since the grand estate was erected in 1754. It would not stay empty though. Like a sadistic case of whisper down the lane, the story changed. The truth was altered, shrouded by local lure, and those that believed the stories couldn’t deny the pull Crowe Towers had over them. They didn’t know that the truth was far worse than the tales that they believed.

Now thirty-six years after Nathaniel Crowe was first sent to prison, the State of Pennsylvania is preparing him for his release. The citizens of Elkhart are on edge. Nathaniel himself is uneasy. All he has known for the last thirty-six years have been the walls of Pennington Prison. But when a triple homicide occurs on the very night he is released from prison, one can only ask, “Is history repeating itself?” Or is there a copycat aiming to make sure Nathaniel never tastes the sweet nectar of freedom again?

Scars and Sorrow Saga SET

A Guest Post from Mary E. Palmerin

Secrets of the Scars and Sorrow Saga

This series is complete and I never did much promo for it. I can’t explain why. The subsequent works that followed these are a lot darker in nature. I can’t say it was the content I was scared of sharing. I reached out a few times here and there, but mostly, I would write a book and hit publish. It wasn’t until Gwen and Welch’s story did I spread my wings, take off, and fly.

Three years later, six stories, and one emotional ending, this saga is complete. It is truly bittersweet. Since it is hundreds of thousands of words in length, a blog tour wasn’t something that would be feasible. Natalie asked me to write a guest post about the inspiration behind the series. I know, I know… you’ve probably heard millions of stories regarding how a person was moved to write. And you know what? It’s awesome!

I’ve always stated how close Lyla’s story is to me. I proudly support Project Semicolon, and I even have a tattoo of one on my left wrist. I’m sure people who don’t know me have made assumptions about me and my life, especially after I have met some at signings and they see how passionate I am about the stories I have written.

Now, I am going to tell you my story.

I was four-years-old the first time I remember feeling fear. I’m not talking about the kind of distress from a scary story that is told over a speckling campfire, or from a pretend ghoul while trick-or-treating. I’m describing the kind of dread that still, at twenty-eight, makes my heart flutter with unease. It’s ironic how so many people feel like they were destined to “be” something or someone.

I never felt that, except in the path of destruction. What a mystery, that very destruction has lead me to this fantastic dream I am basking in…

I only remember holding onto the fear and sadness. Thinking back to being in that hot truck when I was four makes me want to go into my office, pour a cup of coffee, and spill those emotions into the stories that I create. I recall reaching my little arm out to roll the window down, but it was too short to reach the lever. The seat was torn and it scratched my little legs. I’ve held onto that horror since. I’m not the type of person that lives with regret. I don’t believe in do-overs. Maybe I was put through that to be here… to tell these stories and give the world a glance into a different facet; for people to discern that life isn’t ever what it seems. Prince Charming and Mr. Nice Guy aren’t always so nice.

Sometimes the dark-haired little girl with pink glasses is crying inside.

Through the dread, the monsters, and the pain, I also saw another side of the world. Good people came into my life and family became the very foundation in which I was built. Who would have thought it would be possible to tear down a little girl before she was even able to stand on her own two feet?

But I did.

My mother, sister, brother, and extended family became my rock. Through heaviness and despair, we were always who one another could lean on. As an adult, I’ve been known for my kindness, randomly sending a care package to one of my street-teamers in need. Lifting people up with my words and always having a positive attitude is another attribute I am known for. Of course, it would have been easier to dismiss the decency that popped into my life and become one of the horrific people that saturated it at different times, but I didn’t.

Moments such as when Christmases were hard for my mother, raising three kids on her own, graciousness was shown to us. The good side of the world gave us mercy that year, giving me faith. Hope. Belief in life.

Words. They have the ability to create so many things. I have used them to cope. I started to write when I was eight, but as time passed, it would no longer be enough for me as the face, voice, and memories from my monster haunted me. New monsters would meet me and become too much. My secrets were too plentiful to handle. I wanted to scream at the top of my lungs, “Am I alive, God?” but my scream was silent. It echoed on the inside. I needed it to stop.

I hurt myself. A lot. That shiny little vane was the only friend that knew my secrets and remained silent. It never judged, it simply listened to my commands and hurt me, making me bleed until my eyes exploited the sorrow that spilled from my soul. I continued to write, mostly short-stories and poems. Being a teenager was one of the roughest eras of my life, as new monsters greeted me. Again, nothing is what it seems. That is the line that I use in every book I write. I became a master at pretending when everyone around me was finding their happiness. My mother remarried an amazing man, one that I am lucky enough to call my father now. My sister fell in love. My brother went to college, then joined the Marines, eventually becoming an incredible father. Things were changing. Family was still the basis of what mattered, but I was stranded in my own personal darkness, and it was swallowing me whole.

I would drown before I escaped.

Tragedy would envelop my family and lives would be lost.

Again, though cliché, I do believe everything happens for a reason. I made it through my teenage years. It wasn’t easy. I learned a lot. I hurt a lot, and I wrote… A LOT. I also kept everything I ever wrote, mostly dark poetry and scribblings. Again, it would prove to be inspiration for this series.

Watching my family hurt is the worst imaginable pain, but the most unbelievable thing is that we will always have one another. I watched one lose the love of their life. I watched another lose their best friend. I watched one return home from war a different person, but our love would remain the same, because we traveled to hell and back.

We fucking survived.

At nineteen, my life changed interminably. I met my now-husband soon after I graduated from high school. We were on-again, off-again. I knew that if I didn’t go back to my safe place, life wouldn’t give me a hundredth chance. In November 2006, I took a chance when I was drowning in an abyss of blackness. I called him and he told me two words that changed me forever.

“Come home.”

And I never left. My husband is the happily-ever-after I never thought I deserved. My life was never supposed to end up like this. Though still in the two-stoplight town that reminds me of my past, it also reminds me of my future. It reminds me of a tomorrow that I will be blessed with. It gives me the hope that I never let myself let go of.

My happily-ever-after isn’t perfect. The road was bumpy and full of scars and sorrow, some that I still wear, but my little 1200-square foot 1940s home is where my life is, in Indiana, with my husband, kids, and dream that is at my fingertips. I won’t ever let go of that fear. It isn’t so bad. It has, after all, given me ten amazing stories. I suppose you can say that it is a friend of sorts.

The fear from my past will never subside because I don’t want it to. It reminds me that I am brave. I have survived. I can show people just how beautiful hope is. Imperfection is magnificent. Lyla is strong. She is fierce. She is fucking brave. And she got the ending she deserved. I got the ending I deserve, too.

This may have not been what you expected. That’s alright. It may be taken well, perhaps it won’t. I don’t write for that. I write to heal. To help others heal. To make others see that through our brokenness is sometimes where we find ourselves.

I know I did.

In conclusion, I hope if you take one thing away from this series and my story, it’s to never judge someone. Always be kind. And carpe fucking diem.

*WARNING* This novel contains explicit language, sex, drugs, violence, and sexual situations that some might find offensive. This book is intended for adults 18+ years of age. This story might be considered dark to some readers…

In my world, there is no such thing as love. It is just a lie we whisper into our client’s ear. Love is foreign and hazardous. What I did not expect was to bare my soul to a man who is as egotistical as he is dangerous.

His name is Landon. Despite his blackened soul, he tried to save me, but what he didn’t expect was my torturous fate to catch up with me.

To your father, I’m the escort.

To your mother, I’m the whore.

To the legal system, I’m the prostitute.

In the end, I’m just the other woman.

I have no idea if I will continue to survive, if I will ever find my path aside from the gritty streets I know so well. There is a good chance I will wind up in the ditch like most women in my position. Surrendering to my fate is the only choice I have. I must relinquish it all.

Excerpt

“What do you think you’re doing?” I question, my words muffled from arousal. He doesn’t respond, just caresses his lips along the sensitive skin of my neck seductively, causing my head to loll to the side. A rush of desire races through my chest, and my breathing picks up.

“We can’t, remember? You’re my pimp, and I’m you’re escort. Rules,” I whimper, reminding him of his words from last night.

He growls, the sound of his teeth grating.  “Don’t ever call me that,” he rasps into my ear. The heat of his breath causes me to moan. He turns me around and picks me up, his fingers digging into my dress-cladded thighs.

“What if you’re not my escort right now? No rules,” he breathes heavily, placing me down on his desk.

“Like, pretending?” I question, digging my heels into his ass, pushing him closer.

“Exactly,” he whispers, brushing my hair from my face. “Just two normal people.”

“How do normal couples meet? What do ordinary people do when they’re together?” I murmur, not having the first clue how a normal couple does things.

Landon slides his hands up each of my thighs, pushing my dress up quickly, revealing my smooth legs and thighs.

“We met on a golf course. I asked you out on a date,” he mutters, his words drawn out and heavy with his harsh breathing as I undo his pants.

“I don’t sleep with a guy until date number three,” I inform him, my hands fisting his hard cock and pulling it free.  My mouth parts when I see it. I forgot how big, how thick it is. He hisses through his teeth as I slide my fingers along his shaft.

“Two, because you couldn’t resist me when I bought you some stupid necklace my shitty-paying job paid for,” he grunts. His hand dips below my dress and pulls my thong to the side, swiping a finger between my wetness, causing me to buck against his hand with an uncontrollable urge.

excerpt ardsent

“Anxious, Princess?” he hummed, leaning across my back, his teeth catching the zipper that ran down the back of my dress and pulling it down one inch at a time. With my breathing ragged, the dress fell to the floor in a whoosh of fabric and left me standing in a strapless bra and nothing else.

He ushered me across the length of the bench at the foot of his king bed. With my knees firmly seated on the cushion and ass in the air, I turned as he shrugged out of the tux jacket and unbuttoned the crisp dress shirt with quiet precision.

“Close your eyes,” he ordered, his eyes boring into mine, and I saw the switch then. The lowering of his tone, the heat that burned in his green irises. This was Hunter fucking. Hunter fucking was so much hotter than Hunter shooting, and Hunter behind a camera made my stomach swim.

I closed my eyes and turned away from him.

I waited, my breaths slow and measured as the goosebumps raced across my skin. I waited and I fucking waited, every nerve in my body on edge, aware of every shift he made, until finally his fingertips traced the curve of my ass, before both hands wrapped around my wrists and I felt the rough fibers of a rope slipping against my skin.

“Wait.” I choked and pushed back, waves of anxiety and guilt replacing arousal. As if he hadn’t heard, he continued to wrap the long length of rope around my wrists and up my forearms before he slipped the rope around one tall mahogany bed post.

My stomach curled and flipped, my arms instinctively pulling back, resisting the control he wanted. “Hunter, wait.” Words burned on my lips like fiery cinnamon drops.

“What?” he growled and his eyes darted to catch mine.

“There’s something I have to tell you.” I dreaded the words that hung on my lips. It was the wrong place, the wrong time, but I couldn’t take it any longer.

“You don’t have to tell me anything.” He tightened the rope with a swift tug and then his palms were back to running the lengths of my arms and down my torso, my hips twisting as my thighs grew slick.

“There are things you don’t know—”

“I know more than you think I do, and I don’t want to talk about it right now.” Giant palms jerked my ass against his thick erection beneath the fine fabric of his dress pants. I wiggled and sighed, wanting desperately to get lost in this moment with him, but the guilt had been weighing me down, loading my feet with lead blocks that left me stumbling and moving much too slowly for my own good.

“I’m—”

“Shut your mouth, Princess.” The fingers of one hand dug into the flesh of my ass cheek, while a thumb on his other pushed past my lips and into my mouth, forcing me to bite down. “Don’t act so disappointed — I have you right where you like to be.” He leaned across my back, his crisp shirt rough against my cool skin as my arms stretched to hold the pressure of his heavy body. “Without control,” he growled and tightened his hold in my mouth, forcing my head to turn and catch his stare. “I don’t want another word from you until I say so.” His eyes flashed with warning. My pussy clenched and my thighs shifted. He was right, this is exactly where I wanted to be. With him I felt protected in a way I never had. My feelings were barricaded by his imposing voice and giant body. Twisted up in his bonds and helpless, I was finally safe.

“Chicken fight!”

Becca wasted no time getting to her feet. “That would be my cue to exit. The annual chicken fight is definitely not my scene.” She strode toward the locker rooms, leaving Taylor to face the music.

She turned a wide-eyed gaze toward the rest of the party, which was rapidly dividing itself by groups of two. Even the teenagers. Her stomach started to churn, faster and faster, like a merry-go-round gaining speed.

She stayed put, sort of an “if I’m very still, no one will notice me” move. After all, no one had so far. But she should have known her luck would run out.

Not two minutes later Michael detached himself from the group and swam in her direction. Oh, that hot dog had been a mistake. She just might puke in the pool.

No. No no no. Please don’t make me do this. The last thing she wanted was for Michael Korvello to try to lift her. She could just imagine the stoic grunt as he realized just how much she weighed. Not to mention having to do it in front of a handful of women shaped like twigs. With boobs, of course.

His head lifted above the water with slick grace, the wetness somehow deepening the smoky blue of his eyes. “I need a partner, Taylor.”

She swallowed hard. “No, thanks.”

“Come on. You wouldn’t leave me hangin’, would ya?”

Her expression must have showcased some of her “you bet I would, mister” sentimentality, because the laughter in his ramped up. “Come on. Just a friendly game of chicken.” His emphasis on the word notated his challenge.

Just like he challenged her every day. Drawing her out, coaxing her to take the leap. But this time she had fear of taking her towel off in front of thirty-some-odd people on her side.

“Not happening.” She shook her head to drive her point home.

Above the slosh of people in the pool, a voice suddenly rang out. “I thought you said she was a cool nanny?”

A quick glance revealed the teens looking her way, and not a single soul left out of the pool, except one woman wrangling two toddlers.

And her.

So much for outgrowing peer pressure. Her “okay” got everyone back to their preparations and their eyes off her, thank God. But not Michael’s.

He watched with a raised brow as she stood next to her lounger. Her legs shook with the desire to run back to the locker rooms and hide. How could she possibly do this? But some teeny-tiny spark inside insisted she could ramp up that sexy glint in his eyes.

Fake it till you make it.

Sucking in her stomach, she let the towel drop to reveal her new swimsuit. His gaze traveled down the teal one-piece with interest, lingering where it dipped low over her cleavage. Turning, she draped her towel over her lounger. A totally unnecessary maneuver, but his quick intake of breath told her he’d seen the heart-shaped cutout right over the dimples at the small of her back.

Did he like them?

Remembering when those dimples had been the subject of ridicule rather than an intimate secret between lovers, she approached Michael with a touch of caution. When she was within a few steps of him, he breathed, “Damn, woman.”

Ah, victory.

A few deep breaths got her through the indignity of climbing onto Michael’s muscled shoulders. Thankfully he didn’t moan or stumble over her weight. The only thing that eased her self-consciousness was the feel of his wet skin against hers. His hands warming as they curled around her thighs. The flex of his arms as he balanced her securely.

Oh, she was so going to hell for her thoughts.

Luckily no one else seemed to be paying her any attention as one of the men yelled, “Ready. Set. Go!”

“You’re far too concerned about things outside of yourself—you can’t turn your brain off and simply focus on the pleasure.” Pleasure he desperately wanted to give her.

Tears welling into her eyes told him he was on track, even if her mouth wouldn’t admit it. He held up the blindfold once more.

“Which is why I need to teach you to shut all that shit out. To concentrate on how good you feel, not what I want from you. Not how you look.”

She started, obviously surprised by his insight. Oh yeah, he’d known about her obsession with her looks for years. He wasn’t going to let that get in his way either. He brushed the length of material along her jawline.

“Let me do this, Becca. For you.” For me.

Those oh too vulnerable eyes closed once more, her chin tilting up in surrender. This close he could see her hard swallow as she awaited his next move, the pulse at the base of her neck picking up speed. The beauty of her in that position took his breath away. If he could get his hands on Rockin’ Reno, he’d break every bone in his sleazy little body.

Way past time for Becca to find out what it was like to be with a man who put her needs before his own.

Meghan rolled over, squinting open gritty eyelids to peak at the clock on the bedside table. After arriving at the hotel from the concert arena, she’d lain on the bed for just a few minutes and must have drifted off. All the lights in the room were still on, and her suitcase lay open on the bedspread beside her.

Only an hour had passed.

The slightly grungy feeling from her long flight had multiplied while she slept, reminding her that she’d planned to take a shower. Actually she was more of a bath girl, but she didn’t want to risk drowning if she fell asleep again.

She made it quick, once she figured out how to work the faucet in the shower. The shock of cold water before the hot woke her up slightly, but she knew her body. One steamy shower, pjs, and a warm bed—she’d be out like a light. She could deal with Sean’s anger in the morning.

He’d been none too happy with her when they got to the hotel. She’d ignored him, much as she would a child having a tantrum, while she checked in and got her key. Her southern starch had been evaporating under her exhaustion. Dueling wits with Sean took brain power, and she needed sleep for that to rejuvenate. Instead she’d made her way to her room.

It wasn’t until they reached her door that she’d turned to him for the polite good night. Instead of anger, his face had held a strangely intent expression. Thrills had traveled down along her nerves, though she’d tried to ignore them.

But she couldn’t ignore the way her heart had stopped as he’d reached out to finger a big, fluffy curl in her thick hair. “It really is good to be meeting you, Meghan.” His husky voice sent her into yet another tailspin, until all she could do was mumble as she escaped into her room.

Do not fall for that rock star charisma, she firmly reminded herself. Teasing was one thing. Falling in love with her boss would be an epic mistake. As for falling in lust—it was way too late to stop that.

Now her arms were almost too heavy to drag her oversize T-shirt on, so she settled for that and a pair of panties. Hopefully the hotel wouldn’t catch fire while she was asleep. Having to run around outside without a bra would be embarrassing beyond measure.

She walked back into the bedroom and stared at her suitcase. Man, her body felt like lead. Pulling the luggage off the bed was just too much trouble right now. Maybe she could curl back in around it like she had earlier?

“Need a hand with that?”

If she’d needed proof of her girlhood, her squeal ringing off the walls would have been it. Fatigue clouded her every sense, so she’d missed Sean, who seemed to have taken up residence in the chair in the corner of her room. “What are you doing here?” she demanded in a deliberate bass, pressing her hand to her now racing heart.

“Enjoying the view?”

“Does this room look like a tourist attraction to you?”

“It’s some kind of attraction, at least.”

The fun house, maybe. Luckily she kept that to herself as her heart rate dropped closer to normal. Not that it was ever completely normal around Sean. Over the phone or in person, he revved every engine she had.

His gaze returned to her bare legs, causing her to tug down the hem of her oversize T. Just a look should not turn her on. “What do you want?” she asked around clenched teeth.

“I want my assistant to assist me.”

“Can’t it wait until morning?” Or at least until I’m dressed?

“It cannot. You’ll be sleeping when we get there.”

Uh-oh. She looked wistfully at her bed. “Where?”

“Rosslair House. You wanted me to go. We’ll be leaving in a few minutes.”

“But I just got here.” Was that a whine in her voice? Not pretty, Meghan. Not that he would possibly care.

“Too bad,” he said. “You got me into this. You can go along for the ride.”

“Smart ass.”

Yes, she got that honestly too. She found smart ass answers worked a great deal better than raging at Jake. When she got angry, he simply dug in his heels from here to eternity.

As much as she wanted her freedom, they both understood all too well his deep-seated need to protect her.

Moving in close, she hugged him. With his arm around her shoulders, his surrounding warmth brought the same sense of security it always had. Only she couldn’t live like that forever.

“Let’s save the protection for something major, okay?” Her voice dropped to a sad whisper. “I’m smothering, Jake.”

He squeezed her tighter. “I don’t know if I can stop. Even now. Especially now.”

He rubbed the back of his hand over her cheek. “Every time I try I just see the bruises and my heart stops beating for a minute…I’ll never forgive myself for leaving you behind.”

Covering his hand with her own, she pressed his palm closer. “I know.”

Sometimes she could still feel the impact of flesh against flesh and wondered all over again if she’d be alive right now if her brother hadn’t come home that day. She stepped back, shaking off the memories. “But brother dear, I’ll never find an overprotective husband to let you off the hook with you hovering.”

Jake’s grin said he too appreciated the banter instead of yet another argument. “We could look into an arranged marriage.”

“No, no, and no,” Sara said, lifting her hands as if to ward him off. She could just imagine the pipsqueak her brother would pick so he could go right on controlling her.

“What’s wrong?” he asked. “Actually, it’s not a bad idea. How else will I know I can trust the guy?”

Heavy steps sounded from behind her before a deep rolling voice filled the space. “What about me?”

Sara whirled around on the pavement, staring at Nate Bishop in shocked silence, but his body appeared perfectly at ease-though the look from under the black brim of his cowboy hat was as intense as always. Same as always, as if he were hiding something he didn’t want the world to see too well.

“I can drive her home, if you want,” he said, shifting a little in his cowboy boots.

Obscured was a book that simply called to me. I had no background on the book or the author. This was one that I bargain on and it paid off. When you dig into this book you really don’t want to put it down. It has you on the edge of your seat the whole time.

Athena becomes a high class call girl, at the age of 16.  With no other means to survive she is taken in by a pimp that feeds her all the right thoughts. Michael makes her feel like she is his world and then pulls the rug out from under her.

One day when Athena is running late to a meeting with one of her Johns she runs into an old friend from her past, Isaiah. He is a pastor looking for a place for his church to meet. When danger causes  Athena to run, she runs to the one man she feel will help her Isaiah. Not having anyone to trust she is pulled further into the loop  of not trusting when events take place that show her that you never judge a book by its cover.

“This, This is a Kiss. This is the urging of his mouth in time with mine. The way he tastes and takes and gives and licks. I didn’t know so much could be conveyed in a kiss and I almost want to weep that it’s taken me so long to understand. “

I was so enthralled with this book; I refused to let anything interrupt my reading. You are going to have your eyes open to the dark truth of the call girl. Your heart breaks and want to fight for Athena the whole way through this book. She wants out but sees no way to get out, refuses to give up and will fight to the death. I can tell you I was blown away with the book and can’t wait to read more from Tara Sue Me.

Chapter One

The day I meet Isaiah Martin for the second time, I am running late. I pride myself on my punctuality, not to mention that my clients demand it, and I’m not paying attention to my surroundings.

I look at my watch again. Five minutes after. Shit. I scurry through the hotel lobby, making a beeline to the elevators. If luck happens to be on my side, I won’t have to wait, but the elevators in the largest hotel in Las Vegas are notoriously slow.

Will the stairs be quicker? I glance over my shoulder. The stairwell is located on the other side of the large open atrium. With my client’s room on the thirtieth floor, the elevator is faster, even if I have to wait. I turn back to the elevators.

And run right into a man standing in my path, overcorrect, and twist my ankle.

“Excuse me, ma’am,” he says in a soft, cultured Southern accent, reaching out a hand to steady me.  “You okay?”

“Damn it!” My ankle throbs so much I’m not sure I can walk. I gingerly put my weight on the hurt ankle and curse again at the pain.

Suck it up, Athena. This is nothing.  Think about what’ll happen if you don’t make it upstairs in the next few minutes.

“Ma’am?” Mr. Southern Gentleman repeats.

“I’m fine.” I tentatively move my foot side to side. “Just give me a minute.”

“Why don’t you come sit down and let me take a look at that ankle?”

“You a doctor?” Odds are Odds are he’s just your standard pervert wanting the chance to run his hand up my leg. Even if he is a doctor, I’m not about to let him put his hands on me. Not a wise thing to do, since it’s almost a certainty Mike will find out.

“No, ma’am,” he says. “But I think you may need to rest that ankle just a bit.”

“Really, I’m fine.” I put my full weight on the ankle and nearly fall over as the pain sparks up my leg. “Ow. Ow. Ow.Hell.”

He doesn’t speak again, but takes me by the arm and leads me to a bench near the elevators. His head drops down and he runs a finger along my anklebone. Pokes and prods me.  “I don’t think anything’s broken, but you should probably stay off your feet for the next little bit.”

“Easy for you to say,” I snap. “You’re obviously not the one running late.”

He looks up and our eyes meet.

Warm caramel eyes. His thick, black hair is long overdue for a haircut and curls up the tiniest bit at his neck. His firm lips give way to a perfect “O” of surprise at the exact moment I recognize him.

“Athena?”

“Isaiah?”

He embraces me with a crushing hug. “Imagine seeing you here. How are you?”

My spine goes rigid, and I don’t return the hug. “I’m….I’m fine,” I stutter while my eyes dart around the lobby, trying to see if anyone’s watching me.

“I can’t believe it’s you.” He is oblivious to my discomfort. “Are you in town for long?”

I force myself to stop scanning the area and focus on Isaiah instead. A cold chill  runs down my spine as I take in his handsome features. The last twelve years have treated him well. No longer is he the awkward teenage boy plagued by acne and thick glasses. He’s grown into the handsome man I always knew lay beneath the surface.

He looks at me in expectation. What did he ask?

I fiddle with the hem of my skirt. It rests just above the knee. “I live here.”
