Synopsis

At first, Rick Delaney watched Vee Wyland with the hungry eyes of a fox as if she were a rabbit … his rabbit. But one day, he slunk away without notice.

Months away from graduating high school, Vee’s life is on the verge of crumbling. At home, dire finances and long hours test her family. Her boyfriend hardly pays attention to her. And she can’t shake her feelings for his older brother, Rick.

Then, all in one night, tragedy tears her teetering life into shreds.

When Rick and Vee reunite, the sparks fly. However, she unwittingly signs away a future for both of them. In his world, a place called The Rental, she becomes Victoria and Rick becomes Rhett. One part of her watches with fascination, while the other unfurls and embraces her sexual awakening. It began as a game, but the consequences are real.

Following their heart’s desire is forbidden, but walking away could strip their hope for a future.

The Rental is an erotic romance that explores how sex isn’t purely physical; sometimes, it’s a gateway to your soul.

Chapter 1

Rick Delaney was parked outside my house with my boyfriend. He stepped out of his car and lifted two fingers, saluting me at the front door. He shouldn’t have been.

How could he return to Melbourne after a whole year when I resigned to a life without him—a life, specifically, with the brother he’d arrived? Bottled-up feelings pounded in my chest so hard I was glad no one was home to witness it.

And my boyfriend? He tripped getting out of the passenger seat. That’s what can happen when you looked at your mobile phone instead of your girlfriend’s smiling face. My expression soured as he passed me, not even a peck on the cheek.

“What’s with the ride?” I called.

Their mum, Mrs Delaney, should’ve been dropping Justin off like usual. But he ignored me and trudged farther into my house.

Rick noticed my expression and jogged up the stairs. Elder by three years, he stood tall with the composure of a man compared to his teenage brother. Strong shoulders filled out his dark T-shirt. He was bigger in not only his upper body but everywhere—thick arms and thighs and a solid build. Add that to a smile and he melted the hearts of women everywhere—seventeen-year-old girls included.

“Mum and Dad are in Europe,” Rick said. “They call it a long-awaited honeymoon. Justin and I call it a mid-life crisis.”

My jaw hung open. How could Justin not tell me? I thought this type of thing excited a boyfriend. Weeks of no parental supervision at home—it’d excite me if not for the sudden pit of worry in my belly. “They’re away? They’re not here?”

“That’s what a holiday is.” Rick deadpanned.

“It’s just that Justin never told me anything.”

“It was only a few days ago.”

As if that made it okay. If Justin didn’t spend so much time with his phone in his face, he might have remembered to tell me. I didn’t know why, but it cut me that I didn’t know an important change in his life. I told him every time my dad left to truck interstate for work and that was every few weeks. He was gone more than he was here, and Mum worked odd hours. It was lonely and hard to stay away from the temptations Justin and my best friend, Cara offered me at parties or when we hung out.

“Hey, bro,” Justin called behind us. He came up and slammed his hand on the side of the front door. “Come fix the washing machine.”

“Washing machine?” I asked. Why are you acting like you live here? I was close to adding.

“Yeah,” he held out the front of his top, “got a Coke from your fridge and it squirted everywhere.”

“We don’t have any Coke left in the fridge.”

“You do in the spare one.”

I bit my lip and flexed my fingers by my side. Facing him, I cracked a thin smile. Most of the time, Justin wasn’t like this. Correction, before recently, my boyfriend wasn’t like this. He kissed me like no one else, and made me laugh, but damn it, he either had the memory of a goldfish or was too ignorant to care.

“That was for tomorrow night!” I stared into his eyes with hope of making him feel guilty, but he was clueless. “Dad’s back from Sydney tomorrow, and Mum’s got a dinner for us three. You know he loves Coke. You know he’s been away for weeks. You know Mum’s too busy working to buy more groceries before then.”

Justin shook his head. “So uptight.” He squeezed my ass, smiling as he planted his lips fully to mine. “I love that about you, but seriously, I forgot. And, your mum works at a supermarket, for fuck’s sake.”

True, but Justin drank Coke, and ate all the ice cream, and ate all the chips, and I got sick of explaining to Mum why I was so selfish as to keep putting her out when she only requested little favours like these on special occasions. Such as tomorrow.

“I’m not uptight.” I paused. “It’s fine about the top—I’ll hand wash and Rick—”

But as I turned to tell him not to worry about fixing the washing machine, my hands met a rock solid chest. I froze. My palms lingered on the contours of his defined pecs with my fingertips at his collarbone. Not able to look at his eyes, I dropped my hands, as if that would undo our moment.

It didn’t.

I’d spend sleepless nights dreaming about his body, as I did when he was far away and stopped talking to me. Pictures and memories of him were all I had.

Justin was hot with his dark eyes and brown hair, but compared to Rick, he was scrawny. Mostly bones everywhere, and when we made out, his hips rubbed into mine. I’d forgotten his shortfalls when it was just him and me. I liked him plenty and that grew to love. But now my past was back, and I had no idea what to feel when seconds ago my hands were on his brother.

That brother with a firm build, one that wouldn’t rub against me if we were to … I shut down that thought pattern. I shouldn’t imagine Rick on top of me. We were three years apart, and at my age, sex with him was illegal.

I pulled my thoughts in and mumbled, “Oh, um,” then took a breath and tried again. “Dad’s back tomorrow, so don’t worry about it. He’ll fix it then. I feel terrible putting you out.”

“It’s fine, Vee, really. Kill some time.”

“Thanks, fag,” Justin said, pulling at my arm to drag me away.

“God, Justin, you’re such an ass sometimes.” I shook out of his grip. He looked offended, so I added, “Gotta go clean up the Coke, remember?”

“Seriously,” Rick said, “you two just chill. I’ll let myself through. This way?” He pointed down the hall.

I nodded. “I’ll come with you.”

“Fine.” Justin walked the other way. “You two have fun. I’m hanging in Vee’s bed.”

“Such a tool,” Rick said, walking to the washing machine.

“I know,” I mumbled.

I took out the mop and bucket, and then went to the cupboard to grab the concentrate liquid.

“I was born with a link to him, but indulge me,” Rick crouched by the washing machine on his haunches, legs spread and hands dangling between, “why is someone as smart and gorgeous as you with him?”

“I ask myself why—”

I stopped.

He said I was smart and gorgeous.

“Oh,” I managed between strangled breaths, “thanks.”

He half-smiled then got to work. His T-shirt rode up on one side as he leant over. Just above his pant line, the angular ‘V’ at his lower back peeked out. Hard as I tried notto gawk, it was impossible when I was alone with him in this small space.

“The um,” I started and almost forgot what I was going to say. Luckily, I recovered. “The machine won’t start. Not sure what it is. Mum and I have been hand washing for now.”

Rick turned, focusing his attention on the washer. I wiped the laundry bench and cupboard and mopped the floor, trying to concentrate on the mop end and not Rick’s ass or his body bent over the machine.

After I was done, I went to my room to hang with Justin, but he wasn’t there. I did a lap of the house, called his name, and checked the other rooms too, but he had literally disappeared. I paused a moment in the kitchen, steadying myself on the corner of the bench while I let the realisation absorb. He left without a goodbye, without much of a hello for that matter.

“Rick!” I called.

He emerged wiping his top down his face. I looked away as fast as I could, but the image of his lean eight-pack projected in my imagination anyway.

Justin might’ve been outside or somewhere I hadn’t checked. He had to be. I pushed aside the topic. It would be stupid to suggest he left.

“Thank you so much,” I said, meeting Rick’s eyes, “for in there.” I pointed behind him.

“But you don’t know if I fixed it.”

“You tried.”

He smiled with his lip jutted out and nodded, as if I impressed him. “Well,” he said, “you can be a woman of modern technology from now on. All fixed. It was a loose belt. Slipped off.”

“Oh, lucky me.”

The silence became louder, and judging by the tightness between Rick’s eyebrows, he had just noticed Justin’s absence.

“Justin?” I queried, and he nodded cautiously. “Yeah, I looked everywhere for him. This might sound stupid, but I think he left. I couldn’t find him. He’s just not here.”

Rick tensed his jaw, scoping the open living area. “Bull,” he said, but by the dismissive tone, he sounded like he was saying it to himself or about something else.

He stalked off toward my backyard without another word, so I scampered after him, my little legs no match for his long strides. I flipped the light on outside and Rick walked down the steps, following the shallow lighting spilling over the clumpy, yellowed grass and shrubs lining the property fence.

“Unbelievable,” Rick muttered, I thought, but I couldn’t be sure with his back facing me or by the growl to his tone.

He eased me back with a polite hand and walked around to my front door and beyond. He surveyed the porch and front yard in the same swift and efficient manner as the back, and then turned to me. We were facing each other separated by my whole house. The front light slammed behind him and it made him glow. I supposed I looked the same, and wondered if I seemed as mysterious and alluring as he did. Not possible.

We shut the doors and walked towards each other, meeting near my kitchen bench.

“Did he tell you he was leaving?”

“Not at all,” I said, scratching my head. “I just came from the laundry and he was gone. Maybe …” but I trailed off, feeling stupid for thinking it.

“What?” Rick said, eyes narrowed.

“Maybe he texted me letting me know why.”

Rick shrugged. “You could check.”

I did, returning with my mobile phone. I had one new message.

Justin: Had to go. Sorry, babe xoxo

“Unbelievable,” I muttered, embodying the same rage as Rick.

“What? He didn’t—” Rick looked at my mobile which I handed over, and he cut himself off to read. “He did. Where did he even go? What a bastard.”

Rick’s cheeks were inflamed now, and a telltale vein popped from his forehead. He scrubbed his temples with the heels of his hands.

I remained there not doing a thing. I hadn’t seen Rick for so long. I hadn’t a clue how to calm him down or what would be appropriate.

“It’s not a big deal,” I said. “He’s my boyfriend, not yours.”

“He’s my brother. I’m here to look out for him and the kid slips from my fingers.”

“Look out?” I asked.

Rick’s face blanched. He stood there with these big helpless arms dangling on either side of his body. He coughed and said, “Parents are away. Someone’s gotta keep him out of trouble.”

“Oh.” I sighed. “It’s nice of you to come back to keep an eye on him. I’m sure he doesn’t think so. Now he can’t run amuck with freedom.” I had so many questions to ask Rick, like whether London was an extended holiday or was he there for work or did he miss me? I couldn’t ask any of them though when we had more important things on our minds.

“I don’t think so either,” Rick said in a solemn tone. The severity of it hit me square in the chest like a physical force, and my body stood immobile while I adjusted to the weirdness of everything. Justin leaving, but also the aloof Rick Delaney that had changed since I last knew him.

“I better go search.” He patted his pockets, looked over the bench, and then ducked into the laundry room. When he emerged, he walked to the front door.

I followed, and we both turned to each other at the same time, emitting a startled chuckle from me. I placed my hand over my chest. “Thanks for everything. It’s good to see you back, Rick.” I leaned up to kiss him, and he stooped to my cheek, pecking it so lightly, only the bristle of his stubble grazed my skin.

He jogged down the front steps, unlocked his car, and was about to jump into it when he looked up at me, this big, lost expression on his handsome face. “See ya,” he called. And then he hopped in and drove.

At least he said goodbye, but the whole night had left me shaken.

Kerry has hated Rhys from the moment she set eyes on him. They’ve never had an encounter that didn’t end with them both enraged. Paired up at his brother’s wedding, their clashing personalities come to a head and a daring wager is made. Rhys agrees to submit to Kerry for a single evening if she will do the same. Considering the sexual flavors Rhys has enjoyed in his past, it’s one bet Rhys is sure he can’t lose. But Kerry has a few secrets of her own and her plans for him land Rhys in a place he never expected, the arms of sexy Italian solicitor, Asher D’Ettore.

Asher becomes an obsession Rhys can’t shake. His alpha ways and confident mannerisms render all of Rhys’ usual charm useless. With his hard-earned reputation in the media spotlight, Rhys is forced to make a choice between his public persona and true love.

Inside Scoop: This sexy tale includes graphic sexual male on male encounters and fetish club references which could have you searching for one in your area.

Excerpt

“Are you hard for me?”

Tilting his chin, Rhys cut his eyes at Asher as he made his admission. “I’m probably going to have a permanent limp.”

Asher’s lips twisted into a sinister grin. “Good. I’m going to fuck you. You’re never going to forget it.”

When was this goddamn fight going to end? As soon as the question ran through Rhys’ mind, Knox snagged the back of the dude’s neck. With a jerk, he pulled his head down while lifting his knee into the guy’s face. The double impact of downward momentum against upward thrust did the trick. With a twist, Knox tossed him to the mat. He didn’t move.

“Knockout!” The judge’s announcement rang out loudly sending the throng into cheerful hysteria.

Peccato. It seems I’ve lost. I guess you’ll have to choose to go with me willingly.” Asher paused for half a breath before tacking on, “I have cookies.”

A surprised bark of laughter escaped Rhys. “Damn. You don’t have to lure me to the dark side. I’m a hair’s breath away from exploding inside my jeans just from you breathing on the side of my neck.”

“I think I’ll have to pass on meeting your brother tonight. As you know, I’m not opposed to a public display. If you’re not in the truck in the next five minutes these people are going to get a much different show than they paid to see.”

He made it there in two. There were bruised toes and ribs along the way as he barreled his way to the door. Rhys was beyond caring. His dick was desperately beating against the zipper of his jeans begging to be closer to Asher. Yellow lights flashed as he hit the button on his keyless remote. Asher climbed into the passenger side while Rhys jumped in behind the wheel. He didn’t stop there. Rhys kept going until he was pinning Asher against the seat. Something sharp bit into his knee. He hit his elbow on Asher’s door. Nothing mattered except the taste of Asher’s lips…the sounds of his moans.

The parking lot, while filled with cars, was empty of people since there were matches scheduled for several more hours. Rhys wouldn’t have cared even if they weren’t alone. His patience was at an end. The back of his head stung where Asher gripped his hair at the roots holding him in place. The rich smell of Asher’s cologne teased Rhys’ nostrils as he dragged air into his lungs. He was starving. His hunger for Asher was more powerful than anything he’d ever experienced. It was unequaled.

Without waiting for permission, Rhys tore at the button on Asher’s jeans. Damn his mouth made him hot as hell. Rhys wanted more. Traveling south, he nipped at the column of Asher’s throat while setting his erection free. His hips left the seat as Rhys encircled it.

“Fu-”

Rhys smiled as the strangled cry died in Asher’s throat.

“Tell me what you want,” he demanded while snagging Asher’s shirt in his teeth and dragging it upward. His sculpted torso came into view. Rhys dipped his head, swiping his tongue over the ridges. Ragged breathing met his question. Rhys froze refusing to budge until he heard the words. “Say the words, Ash.”

Excerpt

She stands up and begins looking around. “She was actually just here about ten minutes ago, but I told her you weren’t due in until one. She said she’d wait, but I don’t see her.” She continues looking until her eyes light up. “Oh, there she is. I’d spot that beautiful red hair anywhere. She’s at the table in the corner, her back turned to us.”

At the mention of beautiful red hair, my heart nearly skips a beat. I mentally ridicule myself. I have no idea why I still think every single redhead I see is going to be Andi. As I turn to see where Mrs. Marsh is pointing, I easily spot the redhead. I’m about to thank her and head towards the back table when someone across from her nods in my direction. Slowly, she turns her head, and as our eyes meet, I can’t move from my spot.

Less than twenty feet away from me is the girl I’ve been simultaneously looking for and avoiding for the past three years.

The girl whose mixtape has nearly worn out from continuous play.

The girl I’m supposed to tutor and not five minutes ago I made a vow to keep my hands off of.

Less than twenty feet away from me is Andi. For the first time in over three years, I’m face to face with her. Ruby.

broken road _ final

Broken Road – Book 2 in the Breaking Black Series and the sequel to Black Horse

Signed Paperbacks can be ordered from Addison’s website!
5 paws
rondareviewbluepaw
This is becoming one of my all-time favorite series! You just can’t get enough of Averi and Colt! Heart pounding emotions!
Averi has been through hell and back! Colt has been by her side through it all! In Broken Roads you’re going to get more a look back in to their pass and what made them so strong of a couple. I can’t tell you which book I liked better because they both rock. Broken Roads takes you back and always lets you look at to the future. There is so much excitement pack in to this book you can’t keep your eyes off it. Averi show you just how strong of a person she can be when it comes to those she loves. You’re going to cry, laugh and have your world rocked with this book. Addison is an amazing writer.
Looking forward to the next book in the series!
It is
often said that time heals all wounds. It is spoken like a promise… a vow.
These words are repeated to people who have been beaten down to their lowest
state. To the poor souls who have nothing left to lose. Whispered into the ear
of a grieving daughter, told with a shrug to a man who has nothing left to live
for.
These are
dangerous people.
The
down-trodden.
The grieving.
The ones
who love more people dead than alive.
The words
should never be uttered. Not to the ones who have no solid ground on which to
stand upon, no rail in which to clasp. The white-knuckled moments of life have
come to be expected rather than feared.
“Time heals all wounds.”
The words
are an insult. A slap in the face… and around here, they’ll get you hurt. For
Averi McClain and her husband Colt, there were few deeper insults.
If time
could heal all wounds, Jessa McClain would be proud to know that she was going
to be a grandmother. Nathan Ford would have proudly walked his little girl down
the aisle with Corinne beaming from her seat. Sitting by her side, Anna McCord
would wipe a tear from her eye. Standing proudly by Colt and Randy at the
arbor, Seth would have stood as a groomsman for his childhood friend. That is,
if time truly healed all wounds.
But what
about the hurts you cannot see? The deep gashes and the mangled hearts that
remain after the brutality of a war. Their childhood was a battlefield. Colt
and Averi didn’t want that for their own sons and daughters.
What does
time to do wounds? Time is nothing but a reminder of how much time has past
since you last saw the ones you love most. The line is bullshit. A scape goat.
A cheap cop out. It is something people say when they don’t know what to say.
It’s not deep or sympathetic. It doesn’t stop the heart from bleeding. Colt
would not have a granite wall built around his heart like a fortress. A barrier
which only Averi could crack.
Randy’s
soul would not quake with anger every time he heard mention of Black Horse, his
roving band of lunatics, also known as the Seventy Devils, or Jimmy Hearns. You
can’t even say the name Trent Myers to him without his sanity flickering out of
sight. Tim wouldn’t have to fight his anger out at the gym for several hours,
five days a week. Shelly’s sense of security would be intact and undisturbed.
Averi’s legs would not be permanently scarred with evidence of Black Horse’s
fiery insanity.
Time doesn’t
heal all wounds. Wounds fester. Sometimes the strain and exertion of trying to
get
better puts so much stress on the wound that the scab rips open, stitches and
scar tissue be damned.
Some
wounds cannot be mended.
Some
lines are just begging to be crossed.
Some
roads are meant to be broken.
As one of
Averi’s favorite bands so poignantly croons, “God blessed the broken road
that led me straight to you.” In the case of Colt and Averi, no song
lyrics could more perfectly describe the road that they have traveled. They
have a love like no other, acting as a guiding light, a beacon in a world turned
dark by Black Horse. What would you do if the the one man you couldn’t live
without, was the son of the bastard that murdered your parents and your eldest
brother? In the case of Averi Ford, she knew Colt was nothing like his father.
He had spent his entire life running from his shadow. He had always been the
one to protect Averi, even more so than her ever watchful brothers. You can’t
turn away from a love like that.
Theirs
was a love that was intensified by pain and longing, desperation and heartache.
They faced seemingly unsurmountable odds, and continue to do so, side by side.
She needed him, not to be her hero, but as her equal and her friend until the
end of their days. He needed her, not only physically, but spiritually,
emotionally, he had wrapped all his hope in her. His humanity relied on her
happiness. If her heart ceased to beat, he would let the darkness overcome him.
He wouldn’t stop until every single member of the Seventy Devils were dead.
Lord
knows Randy and Tim would fight right alongside him. Averi was as essential to
Colt as oxygen. Without her, the Colt that she knew and loved would cease to
exist. They loved each other despite the odds they faced; in spite of those who
said they shouldn’t. Averi loved him regardless of his family history, of the
stares and gossip, the upturned noses and blatant hostility. When Colt McClain
walks into a room, the citizens of Oakely don’t see him. They don’t see his
face or his kind soul. They don’t see him at all. They see Black Horse – the
man he so closely resembles, but whose hearts are night and day. There is a key
difference. There is a gentle warmth to Colt’s gaze. A calm depth that if you
look deep enough, you can see all the good in him. Look into Black Horse’s eyes
and you’ll see your own demise. When people look Colt’s way, they see a
murderer, a thief, a snake. They see a man with no soul. But Colt never killed
a man that didn’t have it coming, and let me tell you, Jimmy Hearns has it
coming.
Most
motorcycle clubs are not street gangs, but in the case of the Seventy Devils,
there was no point in hiding it. The Seventy Devils ran the streets of Oakeley.
The Seventy Devils, the band of lawless savages that did Black Horse’s bidding,
lived on, leaderless and hell bent on anarchy. When the strange circumstances
surrounding Black Horse’s death went public, Jimmy monopolized. Playing the
role of a mourning son, Jimmy earned the respect and the power Texas’ most
violent motorcycle gang. To say the devils are out for blood is an
understatement of epic proportions. The band of sociopathic heathens were
rallied by Black Horse’s death. It was a call to action, a call to arms, each
one of them thirsty to drain the blood from Black Horse’s murderer. Each one
yearning to display his killer’s head on a pike for the whole community to see.
If the Seventy Devils were hostile during Black Horse’s reign, it was nothing
compared to their mental state after Black Horse was found burned, shot and
murdered.
A war has
erupted. The Seventy Devils are scattered and on alert, gnawing at the bit for
the go-ahead to strike. They would not hesitate to spill the blood of anyone
who stood in their way of recompense. They knew they would need to act fast if
they wanted to come out on top. Colt was not the kind of guy that you slept on.
He’d stop at nothing to protect his family and he was lethal whether he was
heavily armed or going toe to toe, bare knuckled beat-down style. Colt did have
Black Horse’s blood coursing through his veins, after all. But then, so did
Jimmy, and he is ready to show everyone that the apple didn’t fall far from the
tree… in fact, they appear to have formed on the same poisoned branch.
As leader
of the Devils, Jimmy had seventy miscreants to do his bidding – and three goals
in which he needed to achieve:
1.      Avenge Black Horse
2.      Kill Colt McClain and Randy Ford
3.      Take Averi for his own
Jimmy has
another thing coming if he thinks victory is easily won. Will Colt and Averi’s
broken road end in tragedy? Or will they be the ones to banish the devils
straight to hell? When the demons of the past rise up, can Colt and Randy face
them fearless and determined? Whatever happens, don’t expect Colt and Randy to
stand alone. Buckle up. The broken road makes for one hell of a ride.

Synopsis

Cherry

Memories alone can ruin you. Fear has a paralyzing effect, and love isn’t always enough to keep you safe.

Ace was the gateway to a freedom I hadn’t known since I was fifteen. He offered his protection from the demons that haunted me; both living and dead.

Although I knew I wasn’t enough to keep him, this didn’t deter my hope that one day he’d love me for who I was, not the broken girl he tried so desperately to save.

In the end, the ghosts of my past found me. Their malevolence knew no bounds, and I was forced to succumb to their will of darkness. Each threat named against those I loved made any escape impossible; choosing my life for theirs became my desolate absolution.

Inevitably, it was my own weakness and self-doubt that became my undoing.

Ace

Emotional ties are sometimes severed. Friendships don’t always endure their hardships, and love offered isn’t always returned.

I was in love once. For me, leaving her back in Ohio was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. For her, moving on with her life that included her son and the man she loved was no less than she deserved — unconditional happiness.

My reasons to bring Cherry home to California were obvious. I needed help with my family, and she needed help staying clean and convincing her parents she was ready to give her son the life he deserved.

It was a perfect plan. However, the best laid plans often get lost amidst their best intentions.

Cherry fell in love with me, and in return my love for her acted as the catalyst to her destruction.

About The Author

A.C.

I love to read! I will read anything, literally. It may be a magazine, book, advertisement or even a cereal box. Specific authors that I follow have moved me to start writing. Before long that inspiration had produced a final product that I wasn’t even sure what I was going to do with. Obviously I hit publish and here I am.

Blessed with a great family that includes my husband, four kids, two dogs, and one hedgehog, I’ve lived in the Midwest all of my life. We currently live in a small town outside of Omaha, NE. My day job affords the ability to work from home and I’ve worked for the same lending company for nearly 19 years.

When I’m not reading, I try to be outside as much as possible even if it is just sitting on my deck with my reading device. I enjoy fishing, swimming, hockey games, and watching football with the family.

Excerpt

Hearing him refer to me as Cherry, not Raegan, renews and strengthens my resolve. I want him to forget my given name. Anger will help him through this, and I’m letting him have it. Better he hate me alive than love me dead. “Okay, I’m a liar. Believe what you want to believe, but it doesn’t change anything.”

“What the fuck happened to your face?”

“It was an accident.”

Turning around, looking out the large window of the apartment, I barely hear his whisper. “An accident, she says.” A brief second passes before he continues, this time not only on a whisper, but a broken and shallow voice reaches out to me and I feel it touch me when it does. “Why are you doing this, Raegan?”

Your Peril family will remain untouched and none the wiser.

Having his back to me doesn’t make this easier; not any less painful in the slightest. “Because I love my son, and Vinnie will give me a life with him.”

Still looking out the window to the city below, he crosses his arms in front of him and from where I’m standing, I watch as he brings his hands to his face. I’m certain he’s wiping the evidence of my betrayal away, being in the form of his heartbreaking tears.

“I told you I loved you, Rae. I would’ve given you my own life if you would’ve asked for it.” Pausing, he regroups but continues without waiting for a response. “I won’t beg you to stay, but I can’t protect you if you’re willingly walking into the devil’s dungeon.” Pulling his chest up, his back straight and head forward, he lets out a heavily-burdened breath. “I always did what I could for you. I would’ve kept doing it forever if you’d have let me.”

An uncontrollable sob tears from my chest. I can live with walking away knowing he loves me, but with my uncertainties and lies, I’m breaking the strongest man I’ve ever known. When enough time has passed and once he pulls himself back together, he’ll realize what I’ve done to him and he’ll have no choice but to resent me. “God, I’m so sorry, Ace. Please, I’m begging you. Don’t hate me.”

“Then don’t go.”

“I have to.”

“Then I hate you.”

Synopsis

Strong ties aren’t easily broken…

First loves have the ability to fill us with hope and then shatter us when they end. Some people can pick up the pieces and move on. Others simply learn how to exist as a fragment of the person that they used to be.

Shane “Mack” MacAllister is one of the ones simply existing. His wife Ella died at a young age, leaving him alone and broken. Shane knew he’d never be able to give himself to another, believing there was nothing left to give. That is until a young, feisty doctor blazed into his life and made him rethink letting someone into what’s left of his tattered heart.

Dr. Megan Huntley has devoted her life to taking care of others, ever since her twin sister was brutally murdered. She might not have been able to save her sister, but she has made it her mission to help other victims. Long hours in the Emergency Room and volunteer work at the Rape Crisis Center leave little time for relationships. When Megan meets the rugged and handsome Shane MacAllister, she decides to throw caution to the wind and take the police detective for a ride. Too bad she can’t get him out of her head… or her life.

Will Shane and Megan be bound together by true love? Or will past loves and tragedy tear them apart?

When the engine on my Harley stopped purring, I put the stand down and took off my helmet. Staring at Megan’s brownstone I wondered what the fuck I was doing there. It had been hours since I left the station and I successfully talked myself out of seeing her numerous times. There was no talking myself out of it now.

Something inside me needed to see her. Maybe it was hearing John say her sister’s death ate at her every day; knowing that I had a kindred spirit in her. Maybe it was the urge to bury myself inside her tight, wet heat and forget everything except how she made me feel. Maybe it was the way her eyelids fluttered when she came down from an orgasm. Or maybe it was the way her touch soothed me and made me ache for more than just the occasional fuck.

Whatever it was, it had me walking up to her front door and hoping she wouldn’t ask too many questions. I wasn’t ready to have to dig deep and find the answers to those questions.

After the second knock, she opened the door. Her face was makeup free, her hair falling across her shoulders and past her breasts. She had on a skimpy yellow tank top and short white shorts. Her tanned legs looked soft and smooth and in that moment I wanted nothing more than to have them wrapped around my back.

“Mack?” She asked with a mixture of concern and surprise in her voice.

Instead of answering her, I put my hands on either side of her face and kissed her. My tongue touched her lips and she immediately opened for me. She tasted even better than I remembered.

Still kissing her, I walked forward forcing her to walk back into the house. When we got to the stairs, I swept her up in my arms and hoofed it up to her bedroom on the third floor, only breaking the seal of our lips when necessary.

Once in her room, I set Megan on the bed and used the weight of my body to push her down on her back. Covering her with my body, my hands moved with purpose over her skin. One hand cupped her breast, while the other groped her ass. She moaned and pressed her breast further into my palm. Her beaded nipple was begging for attention.

Fuck, but I needed her.

Not wanting to waste any more time, I made quick work of undressing us both. Once she was laid out before me, I fought back a groan at how fucking beautiful she was. And so damn perfect.

She looked up at me with those beautiful brown eyes, submissively waiting for me to direct how things would go. That damn vulnerability and trust was my undoing. I lost all composure, positioned and buried myself to the hilt. Her arms and legs wrapped around my body, tightly holding me to her as I pumped in and out.

My eyes fought rolling back into my head with how damn good she felt. That’s when I realized I didn’t wrap my dick.

Slowing my thrusts—because shit it felt too good to stop—I asked her, “You on the pill, buttercup?”

Her eyes blinked, a haze of lust and need clouding them. “What?” She asked breathlessly.

“I asked if you’re on the pill. I’m inside you bareback, baby. Is that okay?”

“Oh,” she murmured. “We’re covered. Now can you go faster?”

I chuckled, but quickly obliged her. It wasn’t long before she was moaning and I could feel her muscles contracting right before she came.

“Mack,” she cried out.

“Shane,” I corrected her.

“What?” She asked with a confused look on her face. It was rather quite adorable.

“When I’m inside you, you call me Shane,” I told her. Why? I have no idea. This certainly wasn’t discouraging her from thinking this was more than it was. I never let anyone call me Shane when I fucked them. Not since Ella.

Blocking the thought from my head, I buried myself deep and circled my hips, hitting her swollen, sensitive clit.

“Shane,” she breathed as her climax hit her. Her nails scored my back and I made a mental note to let her have free reign more often.

I feel ridiculous. And I bet I look ridiculous.
My ingenious plan isn’t so genius now that I’m actually acting it out. I’m a tad chilly and am getting a slight cramp, but I have no time to chicken out because the front door downstairs has just closed.
My plans of escape are long gone.
Rearranging myself, I shuffle up the bed quietly, listening intently.
I can hear bottles in the fridge rattle as Jasper opens the door, no doubt standing in front of it, the dim light inside bouncing off his perfect features as he grabs a beer.
I hope he’s not hungry, as I can’t remain in this position much longer without losing face.
Thankfully, I hear his heavy footsteps trudge up the stairs, and my insides do a tiny flip-flop in excitement, and trepidation.
This is it, Ava. You’re a strong, powerful sexy woman. My goals are more important than my fear. I am the lioness of the jungle, ready to pounce.
Who the hell uses these positive affirmations, because they are so not helping right now!
Taking a deep, steady breath as Jasper opens his bedroom door, I can see he’s taken aback when confronted with the millions of candles I have laid around the bedroom, trying to set a mood, and hopefully, not setting the house on fire in the process.
“What the…” he gasps, and then his eyes land on his bed.
Well, they land on me.
I am lying on his bed, in the most seductive pose I can muster, without looking like a total dweeb.
“Ava?” he asks as he steps into his bedroom, slightly stunned to see me sprawled on his bed like a Playboy Bunny.
“Happy birthday,” I reply softly, giving him my best attempt at ‘bedroom eyes.’
I practiced in the mirror for about twenty minutes, so it better come across as sexy, and not like I’m severely cross-eyed.
He strolls over to the end of the bed, looking down where I lay, propped up on one elbow with a knee bent, gazing up at him.
“Th-thanks,” he stutters while eying my body not so discreetly.
Win for me! Jasper, who is usually so eloquent, is lost for words.
Smoothing out my black chiffon nightgown, which scarcely covers my bare skin, Jasper watches intently as my hands glide over my flesh. I demand the blush about to creep over my body to keep away, because now is not the time for modesty.
He licks his bow lips and runs a hand through his hair, fisting it into a messy peak. He looks amazing. Even at 2a.m., after working all night, he looks as if he’s stepped off a runway in his grey sleeveless hoodie and faded blue jeans, which are tucked into his loosely tied, scuffed combat boots.
“Are you my birthday present?” he asks, his eyes lingering on the sheer material at my breasts.
Before I have a chance to answer or blush he adds, “Because if you are, I want to unwrap you now.”Surrendered-teaser2

PYROS (a DarkWorld Origins novel).
This short is the origin story of sexy Fire Mage Logan Westin from Skin Deep.

Logan Westin, is the brooding hunk that steals Kailin Odel’s heart in SKIN DEEP. Even the fact that she’s a panther shifter and he’s plain old human couldn’t stop the sparks from flying between those two.

But Logan has his own little secrets, a history that weighs down on him, memories that seem to escape him. PYROS tells you where Logan comes from both in the origin of his powers and the source of his troubled mind.

And remember, Pyros comes before Skin Deep chronologically.

Excerpt

It was supposed to be a special day.

Logan Westin’s mother had promised to take him to his favorite diner. The one he loved to look at when they walked past on their way to the bus stop. Sometimes he’d slow down. Press his hands to the window and peer inside. Logan loved the look of the red-cushioned seated and the bright gleaming chrome.

Today was his chance to go inside and mother had said she’d get them strawberry milkshakes.

Logan was so excited he couldn’t walk. He had to hop or run, do something more than just stroll along as if their destination wasn’t a place that made him so excited he wanted to laugh out loud.

But Logan didn’t laugh. Father wouldn’t approve. And even though Father no longer lived with them, Logan knew he had to be careful. For Mother and for… For? Who else was he meant to protect?

Logan frowned and skidded to a stop in front of the diner. When he pushed the door open he inhaled the smells, and it all made him giddy with excitement. Coffee, and cooking meat and the polish from the black-and-white checkered linoleum beneath his feet. He pasted a huge grin on his face as he walked inside. Mother followed closely by a little girl whose laughter tickled his insides. She was as excited to be there as he was. They’d waited for so long.

When Logan turned to pull her pigtails he paused, stunned and confused. There was no one there. Even though her laughter still rang through the diner, the haunting sound so filled with happiness, so innocent and bubbly. He knew that voice. Knew if he reached out she’d hold his hand and her skin would be soft and smooth. Knew she’d grab his hand and pull him inside and accuse him of dragging his feet.

But there was nobody beside him.

Excerpt

Clutching the phone, I whispered Anjelo’s name into the device. The darned thing promptly advised me to speak more clearly, its tone annoyingly authoritative, seeming to laugh at me.
Damned machine.
Clearing my throat, I spoke his name again, this time restraining the urge to shout at the piece-of-crap phone.
Dial tone. Thank Ailuros.
“Kailin? What time is it?” Anjelo grumbled, his voice thick with sleep, grumpy and perplexed. He loved sleep, even more than his widely known love affair with Italian pasta. Nothing the school cafeteria supplied would ever tempt his taste buds. Anjelo had gourmet taste.
All he would’ve heard was my grunt of pain as I slid further to the floor, the phone suddenly too heavy to hold to my ear.
“Kailin, you okay?” His voice gurgled as if I were underwater—hollow, strange.
I took a deep breath and gripped the phone, pulling on every last dreg of energy, and said, “Sure. Shot. Bleeding. But okay.”
My voice cracked on each syllable, and I barely heard his urgent request for my location. I scowled at the phone, again so heavy it began to pull my hand to the floor, inch by inch.
Why was he shouting at me? I could hear him perfectly.
I spoke with a false calm. “I’m at the center.” Then I let the phone fall, unable to bear its incredible weight.
Scrambling. The knocking sounds of someone bumping into things in the dark. Muffled oaths, and then a slamming door.
Good. Anjelo’s coming.

Excerpt

I was too light-headed to do anything but sink to the floor, my knees at last losing the fight to hold me up. The heavy-bottomed drinking glass slipped from my grasp falling straight to the wood floor, smashing into a million pieces. As the glass hit the ground water burst from it like a geyser, spraying droplets all over the kitchen. And all over me.

Good job, Odel. Now who’s going to clean up this mess?

I lay where I fell, my face resting close to my poison-wreathed arm. I stared at it as it throbbed and pulsed, as if the poison had taken on a life of its own and was just waiting for the next moment to advance further into my flesh.

Meet The Author

I have been a writer from the time I was old enough to recognize that reading was a doorway into my imagination. Poetry was my first foray into the art of the written word. Books were my best friends, my escape, my haven. I am essentially a recluse but this part of my personality is impossible to practice given I have two teenage daughters, who are actually my friends, my tea-makers, my confidantes… I am blessed with a husband who has left me for golf. It’s a fair trade as I have left him for writing. We are both passionate supporters of each others loves – it works wonderfully…

My heart is currently broken in two. One half resides in South Africa where my old roots still remain, and my heart still longs for the endless beaches and the smell of moist soil after a summer downpour. My love for Ma Afrika will never fade. The other half of me has been transplanted to the Land of the Long White Cloud. The land of the Taniwha, beautiful Maraes, and volcanoes. The land of green, pure beauty that truly inspires. And because I am so torn between these two lands – I shall forever remain cross-eyed.

Synopsis

The 29th of February, the day I was born.

When I wake up on this day, I’m in a different city, with a different life and no memory of the lives I had before this one. Today is the tenth time this has happened to me. The tenth time I’ve had to figure out where the hell I am. The tenth time I’ve had to try and work out who the hell I am. This is the tenth alteration of the person I am. Each of us has had different lives, different backgrounds and different families. But there’s always been one constant.

Him.

He’s the reason I keep doing this. He’s the reason I spend four years searching. If I’m lucky, I’ll get the trigger and find him quickly and we can spend those four years together before I disappear again. If I’m not, we might get a year, a month or even just a day. Once we got nothing, but that was a choice.

And every time it happens, he patiently waits for me. He says that every time I come back to him, it’s like falling in love with me all over again. I say that every time I come back, I fall even more in love with him than before.

It scares me that one day I won’t be able to find him at all, because when that day comes, I’m not sure I’ll want to keep going. He is my strength, my protector, my one and only constant.

I love him.
He loves me.
But every four years, I lose myself.
And every four years, I have to find him.
This is our story.

Excerpt

“Aren’t you supposed to be studying,” Ben asks, never stopping the sit-ups he’s doing on the floor of his bedroom. I’m sprawled out on his bed supposedly doing some study for my English final tomorrow, but more distracted by what’s going on in front of me.

I smile at him. “I am studying,” I say, knowing it’s true, even if it’s not exactly the stuff I’m supposed to be studying.

Ben smiles as he does a couple more sit-ups before collapsing back on the floor, his hands behind his head as he stares up at me. “You sure about that?” he asks.

I stare at him lying on the floor beside me. I still can’t believe how unbelievably gorgeous he looks in this life. Can’t get over the fact that Ben is all mine.

“Evie, babe,” Ben says, still smiling. “What are you thinking about?” he asks, a question which seems to come up a lot these days.

I’m sure the look on my face gives me away, but I tell him anyway. “You.”

Ben’s smile gets wider. “Oh yeah,” he says, that cheeky grin out in full force. “What about me?”

I smile as I slide off the bed and onto the floor, crawling towards him. “How good you look,” I whisper, as I lean down to kiss him.

Ben kisses me back as he says, “Good? Just good?”

I can’t help but laugh as I slide my hand up and under his sweaty t-shirt. I feel his stomach contract at my touch and it only highlights all the firmness of his muscles, the warm, tight skin that covers them. “Really good?” I suggest.

Ben laughs now, his eyes still watching me. I’m staring at my hand, watching it as my fingers slowly pull his t-shirt higher. His skin is covered in sweat and I watch my fingers slide over his stomach, tracing the outline of his hips, the trail of hair that leads from his belly button and lower down. I still haven’t found out how far down it goes and right now, that’s the only thing I’m thinking about.

As my fingers brush along his waistband, Ben groans, and I notice the tightness in the front of his track pants. Unable to resist, I lower my hand, my fingers caressing him on the outside of the fabric. He’s already hard and I can’t help but bite my bottom lip, mesmerised by the fact that I can do this to him.

“Evie, what are you doing, baby?” Ben whispers, his voice strained as though he’s trying to keep himself under control. What I am doing is a risk, but right now, it’s one I’m willing to take.

I glance up at his face and see his eyes are closed. With my hand still on his crotch, I lean in and press a kiss to his lips. “I’m studying,” I whisper.

Hey – welcome, thanks for stopping by! What can I tell you about me? I’m a seriously avid reader and probably get way too invested in stories and characters. Have been known to go without sleep just so I can finish a book. I also obviously enjoy writing them, but we’ll see how that all pans out!
