I leap forward, grab his hand, and place the transmitter in his palm. He looks down at it, and I run across the street. I plant myself against the building on the far corner, the hard hot gray stone scratching my naked back in the night heat.I’m way across the street from him now, cars streaming between us. I point at my ear with the Bluetooth receiver implanted inside.

He puts the transmitter up to his mouth. My heart is nearly pounding out of my chest. This is it. This is me putting my head on the chopping block.

He can say “Go home.” That’s all he needs to do. He can just tell me to go and I will. That’s the bargain. That’s the agreement. I always keep my agreements.

He raises the transmitter to his mouth.

I clench my teeth, my eyes wide open. I’m breathing hard, my hands locked behind me.

I will do whatever he says, I remind myself, I will do whatever he says.

Even if he tells me to go home.

He’s about to speak, his face still locked in that frozen visage and half-smile. Then he laughs, turns sideways, raises the transmitter up to his mouth and says, “Let’s play.”

I nod my head.

Oh my God!

Yes! The fire starts anew down below. He’s playing. I’ve gotten him to play! That was the hardest step.

“My sweet dirty whore,” he says, “you’re naked, aren’t you?”

Wow, kudos to the body paint artist. Even the great Lukas Thorn can’t really tell that I’m naked.

“You realize what you’ve set yourself up for? You’re going to have to prove that to me, you know.”

I nod.

“You’re going to have to prove that to me in public.”

Oh God! The very thought sends me into delirium. Yes, I will. Yes, I’ll do anything. In front of anybody. To please you. Yes, I will. I so want you. I so want you to tell me to do horribly nasty things in front of other people. I so will do anything you ask. All you have to do is command me.

Author Interview

Q: What stands out to you as the biggest update to this new release of Prince Charming?

A: The story has been reviewed by new sets of eyes, and that has improved it. Not much about the story has changed, but it’s fresher and crisper. With the help of Booktrope, I’m able to get the messages of this book across to a whole new audience of readers.

Q: You describe Prince Charming as “a modern twist on the Cinderella fairy tale.” How did you decide he’s the one who needs saving?

A: I think teen boys and girls aren’t as different as people make them out to be in life. They both go through huge transitions during high school, and I wanted to tell some of those themes in a new way. Geoff’s character struggles a lot with himself and his perception of the people around him in the book. In fact, he misinterprets a lot of the ways people react to him. I really enjoyed exploring this character and his flaws. He needs help–and he gets it in this book!

Q: What is your favorite part of the story?

A: My favorite part is Geoff’s internal voice. He’s blunt, sarcastic, has a chip on his shoulder, and unsure of himself throughout much of the story. It was a challenge to convey, and I loved translating that to the page.

Q: What’s next? What are you working on now?

A:This year has been all about back to basics for me. I’ve already completed the first drafts of two novellas and a full young adult novel this year, and I’m working on my second one. It’s another fairy tale “twist”. We’ll see where it goes!

I sigh wistfully as I stare out the window of his big, black, Ford F-150. Not that there’s much to see, as everything is shrouded in darkness, but it relaxes me nevertheless. As I peer out at the shadows of trees, I playback the evening we’ve just had. It was a beautiful day for a wedding. I don’t usually care for such occasions, but this one I wouldn’t have missed for anything in the world. Avery was the perfect bride and her groom was a fine accessory.

I can’t remember the last time I went to a wedding. I know I’m at that age where a lot of my peers are choosing to say I do, but I run in a pretty small crowd. I’ve been lucky enough to avoid the monotony of marriage ceremonies. It’s not that I have anything against marriage—or even weddings—I was just never that girl who dreamed of my wedding dress before I got around to losing my first tooth. I’m not holding out for Prince Charming and I don’t fantasize about what I’d like my future engagement ring to look like. Of course, I won’t judge a girl for dreaming of those things, so long as she doesn’t judge me for not dreaming of them.

Some days I think I’d like to get married; though, I’m not sure if that’s a desire that was instilled in me as I grew up under my parents tutelage or if it’s something my heart truly longs for. I have my days when I think I’d be alright if I never got married—so long as the man I loved was still around to keep me company.

Or maybe that’s just me fooling myself into believing something that seems safer than the alternative—safer than the risk that if we were ever anything more, we might break. We’re already fragmented souls and the two of us together might never be able to make a whole.

Pushing such thoughts aside, I smile as my head fills with images of Trevor and myself out on the dance floor. He’s not a dancer. Not at all. It’s actually one of the few things he’s not good at. Who am I kidding? Neither am I. Yet, in spite of our lack of ability, we got caught up in the moment and we couldn’t help but join in on the revelry. Those newlyweds and their charm clearly cast a spell on both of us. I’m not complaining, though. I had a marvelous time.

“What are you thinking about over there?” he asks casually.

With my gaze still trained out the window I reply, “Just remembering. I had fun. Did you?”

“Surprisingly, yeah.”

His response makes my smile turn into a grin. Weddings aren’t his thing, either. Although, I think it has more to do with his lack of enthusiasm for suits than anything else. Even still, he got dressed up and accompanied me without any grumble. I think that makes me pretty lucky. I’m sure there are plenty of girls whose boyfriends wouldn’t be so accommodating; and yet, even without the title, he’s that good to me.

“Thank you. For coming.”

“You’re welcome.”

I turn and see HIM, I realise he is the one watching me. I don’t know why I don’t feel creeped out, but I don’t. I put a towel around me and find myself walking towards him. I need to know who he is.

The closer I get to him the more of him I can see. He is in his swim shorts and no top. His body is so beautiful. All I can do is look into his eyes, they are the most beautiful blue colour. They are turquoise and are like pools that are drawing me in.

“Hi” I say, trying not to blush “I’m …”

“Cassie” he says. “I know who you are, I was hoping to bump into you tonight. I’m Jordan,” he says with the biggest and brightest grin I’ve ever seen.

“Hi Jordan. Why were you hoping to bump into me?” I stupidly say to him. He’s making me lose control of myself. I feel really nervous and look down at the floor.

“Erm I wanted to get to know you. I feel like I’m drawn to you for some reason. I know that sounds stupid, but everywhere I look I can only see you.” He puts his finger under my chin and makes me look into his eyes. “Even when I have my eyes closed, all I can see is you. Sorry if that sounds a bit stalkerish.” He laughs, but I can see that he’s embarrassed about showing me his feelings.

I laugh with him because I really don’t know what to say. I have to try and say something though because he is looking at me with those mesmerising eyes. “Yeah it does sound a bit stalkerish,” I laugh. “But I’m flattered and yes, I have seen you around at school and I did wonder who you were too. So we are both a bit stalkerish.” We both start laughing.

“I’m going to go and dry off and get some more clothes on. Then maybe we can grab a drink,” I say really quickly so Jordan doesn’t see I’m waffling on a bit. He is making me nervous but I don’t want to stop talking to him. I turn and walk back into the house, towards the stairs to go upstairs to the bedroom to find my dress. I can feel him following me and I smile to myself. I am a little bit nervous though that I am in the house with him and my friends are outside, but he makes me feel safe.

“That’s sounds great, although I don’t mind if you don’t put anymore clothes on” he says grinning at me. He is following closely behind me, I was right.

“No, seriously I would feel better if I had more clothes on.” I laugh as I’m heading up the stairs.
