She grabs my hands and pins them together. I don’t fight off her touch. I

let Mati gather them and raise them above my head. “I think it’s so easy to fall into the world when

you’re not ready,” she says seriously. Her free hand brushes over my brows, then sweeps down my

nose. “It’s such a big place and we’re all very tiny in the scheme of things.”

“What are you trying to say?”

“It sucks being an outlier, Beau. I get it. But in spite of everything, we’re

always going to feel a bit lost. It’s the part of growing up that no one ever tells you about.”

“You’re very wise today, Miss Mati.”

“I’m lots things, mister. I’m…” Her voice drops off and she nervously

glances down at my chest. “I think I’m a little bit in love with you actually.”

At least I’m sitting. That doesn’t help the way my stomach drops

though.

I snake my hands out of her grip and brace them around her face.

About The Author

It began with a boy who survived a plane crash in the wilderness.

I discovered my love of writing during a fifth grade writing assignment for

Hatchet. After that, I knew I wanted to be a writer.

Always the hopeless romantic, I write late Victorian and Edwardian

historical romances as well as contemporary New Adult romances.

I am a member of Romance Writers of America (RWA), as well as the

New Hampshire chapter (NHRWA) and the New England chapter (NECRWA). I contribute regularly to the

Modern Belles of History blog, a site dedicated to writing, reading, and researching 20th century

women’s historical fiction.

I am the devil. What did she ever do to deserve this? She’s my employee and an innocent bystander who’s nothing like my usual contenders.

Still, I prowl up over Arriane on the mattress, the way I’ve done with countless women before. Straddling her, I’m on all fours, dipping down just enough to blow lightly on her mouth, making her gasp.

I have no excuse for acting like this. I can’t claim to be drunk on this aftermath of a New Year’s Eve. No, I just can’t deal with what happened earlier tonight. I want to forget how I lost my shit, the way I rebuffed Pandora’s lack of commitment to me.

Arriane’s hair is midnight-black like mine. It’s long and so silky it shines even in the dim lighting of my bedroom. First, I slide the simple black hairband out of her ponytail. Next, I fan her mane out over my pillow.

“You should wear your hair down more,” I tell her, and the small hump on her throat lifts in an anxious swallow. I draw back for an instant, studying her.

“You like it?” she murmurs. She seems surprised.

I slide a glossy lock between two fingers and watch it spill back to the pillow. “Of course I do. It’s fucking beautiful.”

Three years ago, I was running low on employees, and in walked this girl, this sweet twenty-year-old who needed money. Like most people in the college town of Deepsilver, Arriane came here for her degree. Only she doesn’t come from an affluent family, and tuition is expensive. Since then, she’s worked more at Smother than she has studied. Whenever I need someone, I turn, and Arriane is there, ready to pick up the slack. Beautiful, loyal Arriane.

“Your eyes are violet,” I state, because I hadn’t noticed before; she works for me, and I don’t get involved with my employees.

“Yeah,” she whispers. “No one else in my family—” she starts, but then I lick her lips and she gives off a quiet moan. I like that sound.

Originally from Norway, I moved to the United States twelve years ago. I hold a Master’s degree in languages and taught Spanish at college level before settling in at the Savannah College of Art and Design as an adviser.

I write New Adult fiction, sometimes with a paranormal twist—like in “Shattering Halos,” published by The Wild Rose Press in February 24th 2014 and in “Stargazer,” estimated release date, November 2014. The first book I’m self-publishing is the New Adult Contemporary novel “Pandora Wild Child,” which will make me a proud indie author in October 28th 2014!

Blake was not a happy camper nor was I. He was driving like a maniac. A Chevy pickup no less. He’d

asked Mrs. Cho to have someone pick us up when we landed, but somehow that had gotten lost in

translation and instead she’d rented him a pickup truck. As mad as I was at him, I’d do anything to see my

metrosexual hero behind the wheel of this vehicle. That man in a pickup truck was like Batman in an

RV.

“We need to find a Wal-Mart,” he grumbled.

“Why?” I gritted. I was still blindfolded and handcuffed, and I had no clue where I was except I knew it

wasn’t some romantic island. I waited impatiently for his response.

“So, I can buy a chainsaw and saw off your handcuffs.”

Gah! The thought of Blake with a chainsaw sent a shiver down my spine. My life could be over. Mr. Born

with a Silver Spoon in his Mouth was not exactly what I’d call handy. The only power tools he had any

experience with were his tongue, his hands, and his cock.

“What about a locksmith?” My voice was urgent. “I’m sure one could make a key to unlock these damn

things.”

“I can’t put my finger on anything specific that inspired me to write RETRACE. It was more a blend of many things that eventually grew into a story about letting go and learning to love and accept. Some of the key elements that did inspire me though, were a few crazy, vivid dreams that eventually turned into scenes, music, a lot of music, and mainly the characters themselves. Reeves and Nia practically seized my mind to the point I couldn’t concentrate on anything else and just had to pour their story out of me. The book traces their hesitant journey into deep friendship that helps them cope with traumatic pasts, and gradually leads them to discover the path to heal and accept. Jen’s face lit up like a little kid about to go on one of those coin-operated mechanical horsey rides. With Christmas around the corner, most of our SIN-TV productions would be shut down and our offices would be closed until January third—giving us an opportunity to go on a two-week honeymoon. I explained all this to Jen. She agreed. It made total sense.

She rolled on top of me and gave me a hot spontaneous kiss. “Oh my God, Blake, we’re really going to get married!” The excitement in her voice was contagious. I smashed my lips against hers. “Yes, you’re going to become Mrs. Blake Burns, and tonight we’re going to break the news to our parents.”

There was a light rap on the door. “Jake, are you in there?” a feminine voice asked from the other side.

I stood, with the help of my crutch, and walked over to the closed door. I opened it to find Jenna on the other side. “Sorry, I just needed some quiet time.”

Jenna smiled. “I don’t think there is such a thing as quite time in the Welsh household.”

“Come on in,” I offered, moving aside to make room for her to enter.

Jenna stepped into the bathroom, her heels clicking on the tile floor. She shut the door behind her, leaned against it and closed her eyes. She was dressed in a red velvet sleeveless dress and black stockings, her long blonde hair gently falling over her shoulders. “You’re right. It is quiet. That’s a nice change of pace,” she sighed, opening her eyes to meet my gaze. Jenna took a few more steps towards me. Soon we were inches apart. Her gaze never left mine. Her hazel eyes held promise. Then she wet her lips with her tongue and leaned in to kiss me.

I was taken aback by the action—my lips unmoving, my eyes wide open, watching her kiss me. It was unbelievable to comprehend any girl would want to kiss ‘Jake the cripple,’ but Jenna was kissing me. I felt the tip of her tongue dart into my mouth and I moaned. I dropped my crutch, the aluminum clanging as it hit the floor, and wrapped my arms around her waist. I smiled, so happy in the moment that I forgot one major detail. “Oh, shit. Your brothers are going to kill me when they find out.”

Jenna simply laughed. “Seriously, you’re a part of this family. They love you like a brother.”

“That makes you my sister and that just sounds perverted.”

“John and Jason will be heading back to college and Rick doesn’t need to know.”

I thought about it for a second. That was all I needed to make up my mind. “Pick you up at seven tomorrow?”

“Perfect,” she replied, leaning in for one last kiss. “I’ll go out first. Meet you downstairs.” Jenna opened the door and peeked outside into the hall to make sure the coast was clear. She looked over her shoulder and said, “Merry Christmas, Jake.”
