The first time Jolene meets a mysterious man wearing flannel, it’s a case of mistaken identity. The second time, they end up against the side of a bar.

Third time’s a charm, right?

Jolene Hayes finds herself spending the summer in the picturesque mountains of Idaho in order to avoid a past fling. It’s a perfect escape, except for the one problem that keeps popping up: a sexy backcountry pilot named Ty Harrison. Jolene tries her hardest to resist his scruffy beard and flannel wearing ways, but eventually rationalizes that a summer fling would just be like the rest of them—love ‘em and leave ‘em and move on with her life.

Between these two are secrets that could tear them apart before they even get started, though. Life changes without warning, and dealing with the results leaves Jolene protecting her heart at all costs. Ty knows he is everything Jolene doesn’t want, but he can’t let go of the fiery siren.

Throw in the element of wilderness, a small town where secrets can’t hide and the past repeatedly showing up on Jolene’s front porch, the promise of a summer fling becomes complicated.

Guest Post

My inspiration behind Being Jolene by Caitlin Kerry

When I start a story, or when I get an idea for one, usually there are three main points or themes that I want to explore. For Being Jolene, it was a few things. Jolene was a side character from my first book, Finding June, and I knew that her story would be next because in some ways, I didn’t really know Jolene and I wanted to know what made her tick. Here were the three things I focused on.

  1. The first point was the idea of a HEA. Now, don’t worry there is a HEA in this book, but I wanted to explore the idea that maybe HEA isn’t just the house and the kids and norm. HEA can be complicated, they take work. Jolene struggles with wanting a different HEA than everyone else’s. I don’t want to say too much without spoiling the book, but that was one theme.
  2. The Hero. Ty. Okay, so I live in Idaho and most of that time was spent in rural Idaho. There are a lot of cowboys here. I read about dreamy cowboys in books all the time. In real life? Yeah….a little bit different. And for me, a whole lot of no. I felt like there was a missing gap and that there are more than just the “western cowboy” in romance. For me, there is also the mountain man (outdoorsy type, lumberjack, ect) and that was my goal with Ty. And you guys, I swoon pretty hard over him. I can’t wait for you to meet Ty. He stole a little piece of my heart with his flannel and beard. (And he’s a freaking pilot! In the wilderness!)
  3. Switching the stereotype was the third theme. You could throw a dart blind and find a book with an alpha male who sleeps around and is a pro in bed and the woman has no experience. I wanted to switch that a bit. In this, Jolene is known for short and hot romances with men. She is a serial dater. Ty, while he is experienced, is more on the conservative side and I loved watching these two deal with it. At times, it’s messy, but worth it in the end. I have to say, I think Ty is a bit of a feminist 😉

Those were my running ideas through Being Jolene and from there the story grew. I can’t wait for you to read Jolene and Ty’s story, coming to you February 19, 2015!!

Synopsis

Matisse Evans is determined to make her sophomore year of college successful after failing out of a prestigious art school and spending a horribly boring gap year at home. Despite her focus, time isn’t on her side as she struggles to hold down three jobs so she can afford her first apartment while juggling course work. In the chaos of it all, Beau Grady moves in and shakes up her world. A college dropout and tattooed bad boy, the rumors about Beau mean one thing for Matisse—trouble. Paralyzed by the fear that she’s missing out on life, Matisse discovers plans may unravel, but what rises in their wake can be worth the uncertainty.

After spending the summer couch surfing, Beau Grady moves into an empty room at his ex-girlfriend’s Portland bungalow, skipping his senior year of college to spend his days working at a Vietnamese food cart instead. Once a star hockey player and gifted student, he’s put his life on hold after receiving a life-altering diagnosis, complacent to live in the moment. Hiding behind false rumors and bad habits, Beau falls for Matisse, letting her believe the worst until their relationship blooms into something they both can’t ignore. Falling for her means having to face a future he’d rather forget, but loving her just might be worth it.

Excerpt

“I didn’t mean what I said the other night.” Mati spins around and tosses my T-shirt at my face. “And I guess I’m sorry for that.”

She glances over my shoulder, biting her bottom lip as I snap the folded T-shirt against my shoulder. I laugh in spite myself. I’m a fucking wreck, but something about me intimidates her. I can’t figure her out.

I stretch, pain radiating throughout my body as I do. I slip the shirt over my head and pull my shit together.

“It’s whatever,” I say with a shrug. I try to play it off, grabbing the ratchet from her hand. Truth is, she was right, even if I didn’t want to hear it.

Mati pads over to the tool bench I built with Noah. She pushes herself up to sit on it and places the giant sombrero from our party last weekend on her head. It swallows her up. It’s not that Mati is small—she’s tall and willowy—it’s just that I’ve always liked everything opposite before now. And I hate that it takes her wearing a stupid costume prop for me to figure that out.

“I feel like I need a margarita with this on.” Mati straightens it, adjusting the strings underneath her chin. “Maybe a piñata, too.”

“Straight tequila would be preferable.”

She swings her legs back and forth, humming along to the Black Keys. It’s a good thing she’s a painter; singing isn’t a strength of hers. But it’s cute and I hate myself for thinking so.

“How are classes?” I don’t really care about the answer. I just want to hear her talk.

“Oh, they’re fine, I think.”

“You don’t know?”

She stops swinging her feet. “Why do you care?”

“Making conversation, Mati.” I walk around to the bench. “Since we’re talking to each other again.”

A smile spreads across her lips, those red lips that I want to kiss.

“Why are you upset?” she asks quietly.

I swat my hand out and tip the sombrero over her eyes. “I’m fine.” It’s easier to lie when I don’t have to look her in the face.

She straightens the hat. “Classes so far are a lot like my classes freshman year two years ago.”

I skip the obvious question. Too many details and this impossible distance I’m trying to keep between us is going to be obliterated. “How’s that?”

“Do you remember? It’s been so long since you went to class.”

Her teasing washes away the panic seizing me again. “I wasn’t always a dropout. I remember fine.”

“Then you remember they’re pointless.” Her voice grows sad. “What was your major, Beau?”

I help her remove the massive sombrero instead of answering. I need exactly eight credits before I can graduate and start my masters for the accelerated program. I know my major—had a plan, even, had a purpose—but it’s not something I want to get into right now. It’s a far stretch ever imagining I could be a counselor responsible for guiding troubled teens on a hike when I can’t hold a damn wrench.

She taps her index finger over the tip of my nose. “Always Mr. Mysterious.”

I wonder if Mati has been drinking tequila because this isn’t like her. Usually her contempt toward me is blatant, not that I mind this Mati. This is who I was hoping the real Mati would be like if she ever paused for a minute from bowling over everything in her path. And that freaks me the fuck out—that today she’s quiet.

“Forestry sciences. I wanted to be a wilderness education counselor.” I move the hat off to the side and help her down, my hand curling over her hip. “What’s your major again? Being a pain in my ass?”

She rests her hand against my shoulder, not stepping away. “Charming as ever, too,” she whispers.

I tell my hand to let go, but I only hold on tighter because she sways closer and bumps against me, lost studying my face. I want to stay here, feel this, watch her watching me forever. “What would you do if I kissed you right now?”

Her eyes widen and shift focus to my mouth. They trace my lips until I have to fight back a groan. Mati gives the perfect fuck-me eyes.

“It doesn’t matter—” She pauses, her fingers pressing hard into my shoulder. “—because we both know you won’t.”

I slide my hand to the small of her back. My palm fits against the gentle curve there. “Mati?”

“I don’t have time for this.” Her words tumble out in an awkward rush. “I don’t want complications.”

My other hand slips up to rest against her stomach, cinching the fabric of her shirt in my fist. She slams her eyes shut at my touch, her breath escaping in staccato beats, mirroring my own.

The garage smells like damp earth and oil, but I swear we’re standing out in the dark, lost in the woods under the endless cover of stars.

Even though she’s right, even though I am a complication, I can’t shake the feeling in my gut that we’d be a good one. “You’re wrong,” I whisper. Her eyes pop open. “You’re exactly the type of girl who wants complications.” I rest my forehead against hers, her sweet coffee breath washing over my mouth. “And you have no clue what I want.”

Excerpt

My insides are boiling from my adrenaline-filled rage. I never suspected Jake really felt the way he does. Stabbing myself in the eye would feel ten times better than the pain of his words. I couldn’t believe he said that, yet I could. Jake has always been an asshole; however, this takes the cake. The moment he spoke his true inner feelings, all I saw was red. He doesn’t consider me his brother, only a stray Reggie saved.

Reggie moves to my side and puts his hand on my forearm, squeezing hard enough for me to take notice. I glance up to his face, and it’s painfully obvious he was also hurt by Jake’s words. Reggie is probably internalizing it and blaming himself for this moment, but I think it’s good everything is out in the open.

Jake is always quite candid when he’s drinking; I’m just surprised it took so long for the words to fall out of his mouth. However, I’m glad his true feelings are out. Now we can really move on from this night, and the night will be known as the one the Evans brothers became no more.

Reggie clears his throat, as if he’s trying to swallow down the fury that’s settled inside his body. “Jake,” he says in a quiet, deep tone, “I think it’s time to leave.”

“You’re kicking me out?” Jake is baffled. He tucks his flask back into his pocket before approaching Reggie. “Fine, I will leave. I always knew you were a pussy. You could never stand up to her… or him, for that matter.” Jake shoulders past Reggie, snags Delilah’s arm, and walks from the garage, shouting to her to get the kids as he moves to his car and sits in the passenger seat.

I stand at the threshold of the door and look at my brother. I’m really not mad anymore. I feel sorry for him. He’s defaulting to truly harmful words to make the rest of us feel as bad as he does. In fact, he’s acting like a child. Jake’s always been dramatic, so I guess I should have expected nothing less. Yet what he said is unforgettable. I’m not sure how forgiving I can be after hearing what he said. The hateful words will always be in the back of my mind.

Zoe and Delilah file down the back steps with all the kids in tow. Delilah quickly ushers them to the car and straps them in as Jake continues to stare me down, taking small sips from his flask. He doesn’t know it yet, but he’s about to lose everything he has unless he has a come-to-Jesus meeting with himself and changes how he treats Delilah. If she were smart, she wouldn’t stick around for the aftermath of this night. Jake is bound to be intolerable.

Delilah falls into the driver’s seat and backs away from the house as we all stand in the driveway, watching them drive off. I know Reggie feels like he’s watching his family leave for the last time. ~Drake Evans

“Am I hurting you?” I asked nervously as I slowly withdrew.

“ Oh, Blake you feel amazing. I’ve missed you so much.”

“The same, baby.” Relief crashed through me. It felt so fucking good to be home. I thrust my cock back into her, ready to ravish her. But I controlled my strokes, starting off slowly, and then gradually picked up my pace. A look of rapture washed over her face.

“Faster, harder, Blake! I’m not going to break.”

In no time, I was pounding into her, ruthlessly and relentlessly. You’d think my cock would have no stamina after two months with no pussy, but let me tell you, Mr. Burns was blessed with muscle memory. There are fucks. And there are epic fucks. We were heading toward the latter. My cock was in overdrive, and every magic spot was within striking distance.

She clutched my biceps to give her more leverage and rocked her hips into mine with each powerful thrust. I’d almost forgotten how fucking fantastic it felt to fuck her. She was so tight, so wet, so hot. And so mine.

“Don’t stop,” she panted out.

“Don’t worry baby. Not a chance in hell.” I wasn’t going to stop hammering her until the elderly, hard-of-hearing couple next door was calling security.

Our eyes never lost contact. Her face flushed with lust as my cock continued to plunder her sweet pussy. I grunted and growled. She howled. There was something so urgent and savage about this position that brought out our inner animals. My insatiable tiger was back, and my cock was back where it belonged with feral ferocity.

I had newfound respect for the men who served our country. Especially those stationed on ships in the middle of nowhere or twenty thousand leagues under the sea in submarines. I mean, how the fuck did they do it? Months away from loved ones and no pussy. They all deserved medals of honor for their courage and bravery. I was about to get a medal of my own. I’d never lasted this long. Deep inside me, I never wanted her to let me go.

She began to sob, “Oh God, oh God,” and my fears bounced back into my head.

“Tell me you’re okay, baby.” Borderline panic.

She nodded feverishly. “Yes, yes, yes! I’m coming!

My balls retracted as she convulsed around my pulsating cock. On the roar of my name, I slammed into her one more time and my own massive orgasm assaulted me. I’m talking nuclear. My whole body jerked as my hot release showered her magnificent pussy. Our half-mast eyes stayed locked in a haze of passion.

About INSPIRE:

Kalliope lives with one purpose.

To inspire.

As an immortal muse, she doesn’t have any other choice. It’s part of how she was made. Musicians, artists, actors—they use her to advance their art, and she uses them to survive. She moves from one artist to the next, never staying long enough to get attached. But all she wants is a different life— a normal one. She’s spent thousands of years living lie after lie, and now she’s ready for something real.

Sweet, sexy, and steady, Wilder Bell feels more real than anything else in her long existence. And most importantly… he’s not an artist. He doesn’t want her for her ability. But she can’t turn off the way she influences people, not even to save a man she might love. Because in small doses, she can help make something beautiful, but her ability has just as much capacity to destroy as it does to create. The longer she stays, the more obsessed Wilder will become. It’s happened before, and it never turns out well for the mortal.

Her presence may inspire genius.

But it breeds madness, too.

Inspire Teaser 2

Excerpt:

I can feel Wilder’s breath against my lips. More than that, I can see it. The sun has set and the temperature has dropped, and air fogs between us. There’s something about actually seeing it, like our lips are touching, we are touching, despite the distance between. And as we sway from side to side, my heart gradually begins to pick up speed.

The strains of guitar music flowing out from the restaurant are nearly indecipherable over the heavy heartbeat in my ears. But Wilder must hear it. His hands are strong on my body, guiding my movements, and I’m practically clay in his palms.

We dance, eyes on eyes, lips nearly on lips, and there is lightning beneath my skin each time his body brushes against mine in a new way. His touch is firm, but gentle, never pushing or pressuring, though I can tell from the dark look in his eyes that he’s just as affected as I am. The music shifts, building to a crescendo, and he spins us. My chest pushes tight against his, and I bite back a gasp. I don’t know if it’s the cold or him or some combination of both, but the tips of my breasts are painfully tight. Just the pressure of my bra is enough to rub them raw.

I remember the night at his apartment, the way he’d taken his time learning my body. I think of the heat of his mouth on my skin, and the memory alone is enough to make me shiver and clench.

He’s back to being business, grown-up Wilder tonight in his button down and glasses. Only now that I know him, it doesn’t seem like such a stark difference. He is neither the straight-laced man nor the tattooed bad boy. Or perhaps he’s both. Regardless of what he’s wearing, Wilder is caring and loyal and strong and so sexy that I’m having trouble remembering why I shouldn’t push him into the backseat of his SUV and crawl on top of him.

Highly detailed fashion portrait of a sexy muscular shirtless male model

Excerpt

I place my hand over his, leaning my cheek against the warmth of his touch before backing away so I can see him. I’m insane for falling for him again, but it seems my heart isn’t giving me a choice at the moment, ignoring how the rest of me is scared as hell it will never survive if he breaks it this time.

“I don’t want you to hurt,” I whisper. I don’t.

“Then, please stop fighting what we are together and get your stubborn ass over here so I can kiss you like I haven’t seen your pretty face in four long fucking years.”

I take one step towards him and that’s all he needs to wrap me in his arms, pulling me against his chest to close the rest of the distance between us as his hungry mouth collides against mine. His teeth nip the fullness of my bottom lip then his tongue caresses and strokes the sensitive, tingling skin. All strength in my body is stolen by the liberating dominance in his kiss, bruising and healing wrapped in one breathtaking seduction. My knees no longer work, but the rest of my body becomes alive, responding to his touch, awakening me from the emptiness I’ve lived in for so long. This is what I’ve craved. What I’ve missed. His taste, scent, and touch have haunted me, and I breathe them all in deeply now, terrified they will be gone again.

His fingers slide against my neck before softly tangling my hair in his fist. My head spins at his gentle touch mixed with his rough, passionate kiss. My lips part, granting his tongue all the access it wants, and he takes it greedily, sliding his tongue against mine, taming and setting me free. His kiss is scorching, searing me as liquid heat pulses low in my stomach. I feel the damp cotton pressing against where I need him to be so badly right now. Soft whimpers rumble up my throat, the needy pants muffled against his hot mouth. Jensen’s hand pulls me flush to his body and I feel him, hardened and throbbing, against my stomach. My gasp fills the air. I twist my waist, straddling myself against the muscles on his thigh.

Blurb

Every lie, no matter how small, has some degree of truth.

Five months after moving to New York City, Emily is engaged to Blake Carson, future doctor and the man who she believes to be the love of her life. Until she starts to realize that the foundation upon which she’s building her future is based on a series of Blake’s self-serving lies.

Blake can’t let her go. He can’t continue to deceive Emily, either. But Blake’s biggest problem is that he has to maintain the life he has become accustomed to, at any cost. And that means keeping his overbearing mother happy, and keeping Emily ignorant.

Tyler Carson left New York City two years ago, happy to leave behind all of the Carson family drama. Until he comes home and meets Emily. Falling in love with his brother’s fiancée was easy. Protecting her from his family was necessary. Leaving her was almost impossible, knowing that he was breaking her heart, and his own.

Finding solace in her friendship with Tyler, Emily is forced to face the reality that Blake is not the man she thought he was. But neither is Tyler, the friend who gave her the clarity she needed, and then left her alone to pick up the shattered pieces of her life. Heartbroken and deserted, Emily has had enough of the Carson brothers.

But sometimes, love is not that which sends us soaring, but that which keeps us grounded. Can Emily ever bring herself to love another Carson completely?

Secrets, lies and lust-filled nights, all in the name of the screwed-up pursuit of happily ever after, Scared of Forever is the second novel in the Scared Series, which features characters from Scared of Beautiful, but can be read as a standalone.

Excerpt

Emily

Tyler offers me an absolutely angelic and innocent smile.

His warm eyes silently attest to the sincerity of his words as he eyes me expectantly. He walks over to the passenger side of the Jeep and opens the door with exaggerated grandeur, sweeping a hand across his midline elegantly.

“That’s a bit of a lost art,” I say as I climb up the high step into the seat, thankful that I’d opted for ballet flats and jeans.

“What is?” Tyler asks as he hops into the driver’s seat.

“Gentlemanly behavior. Chivalry. I don’t know when, if ever, anybody has opened my door for me,” I say, slightly ashamed that as a woman, I hadn’t demanded better treatment.

“Well, strap yourself in, princess. Today is gonna be a day of amazing first times.” Tyler shoots me a cheeky grin, before turning the key in the ignition.

“Is it too late to change my mind?” I laugh, playfully grabbing for the door handle.

“Yup. You’re now my willing prisoner,” he says solemnly before taking off.

Tyler drives us carefully out of the city. The rain clouds that had opened up above the city seem to be moving in the opposite direction now. The further away we drive, the clearer the sky becomes, the ratio of blue to grey skewing more as the road widens from narrow city streets to open country roads.

“Where are we going?” I ask. The drive seems to be infinite.

“Do you trust me?” Tyler asks.

“Should I? I barely even know you.”

“Trusting the people you know can sometimes be even worse than trusting the ones you don’t,” Tyler says quietly.

“What does that mean?” I ask nervously. Does he mean Blake? Eliza?

“Forget it,” Tyler says. “I don’t particularly want to ruin the day by talking about all that heavy shit. We’re nearly there.”

“Why are you being so nice to someone you barely know?” I ask, looking towards Tyler, who is focusing intently on the road ahead.

“Do I need a reason to be a nice guy?” He shoots me with a charming smile. His brow furrows as he averts his eyes back to the road. “You can tell me if you’re uncomfortable with any of this. We can go straight back. I’d understand, I mean, you haven’t known me all that long.”

“Not at all,” I say sincerely. Fact is, I feel more comfortable and safer in Tyler’s company than I did with Blake last night.

I roll the window down and inhale the salty ocean air that wafts in. Leaning forward to look past Tyler, I see, between the tall oak trees that flank the road, the vast, sapphire blue sea. The sun has even decided to make an appearance from beyond the grey, ominous clouds.

“Wow,” I breathe.

“Welcome to the Hamptons,” Tyler says jovially.

“I thought you hated all things high society, and you decide to bring me to the summer playground of New York’s rich and famous?” I question, confused.

“We’re not going to hang out with the rich and famous. Besides, it isn’t society season. The only people here now are those who actually live here,” he explains.

We continue to drive, beyond the sprawling mansions with their impossibly green lawns, perfectly manicured and lined with tall evergreen fir trees.

“That’s Eliza’s summer house,” Tyler says, pointing to a majestic stone mansion nestled between two long stretches of sand, and backing directly onto the white sandy beach.

“Holy shit!” I exclaim. “I think that place is bigger than my whole home town!”

Tyler just laughs. “I take it you’ve never been inside it then. It’s full of space and echoes.”

We drive right past it, until the road becomes narrower and declines steeply, the Jeep’s tires picking up the rocks and sand from the dirt track and flinging them backwards relentlessly. Tyler handles the car amazingly well, navigating and steering carefully over the now very thin road until we arrive at a much smaller, yet still expansive, weatherboard cottage. The white framed windows look positively striking against the dark beige paint of the exterior. A picketed wraparound balcony encases the obviously abandoned house.

“We’re here,” Tyler says happily. He parks the car and hops quickly from his seat, jogging around to open my door.

I take a step out and stare in awe at the sight before me. The beach stretches out for miles. Immediately ahead, a makeshift fence has been created between the house and the sand from old pieces of hardwood, pickets and thin wire. The sun casts a luminous sparkle against the rising tide…

A couple enjoying a beautiful sunset

This is a lite fun read. You are taken into a world of friendship and love. Heath is not sure what to think of how he is feeling about his childhood best friend.  Carrigan “Ace” is sassy in her own right. She has feeling for her best friend that she is scared to address because she doesn’t want to lose the one person that has been a constant in her life. As they travel a road both are unsure about they find out more of what brings them together. Everyone around them tells them to take a leap and see where things go.

There are a lot of emotions at play with this read. I couldn’t put this one down. It was so engrossing that you just had to read to the end once you start. A love this strong is rare and but worth fighting for. I was blown away how well told the story was told of this young love. Highly recommend you pick a copy up and enjoy a light emotional read!!! This is a very moving book.
