“What kind of person does it make me that I want to go to Colorado to open this new bar, but I also want you to stay here and take the opportunity my dad is giving you?”

Logan licks his lips as his head nods. “I’d say that makes you human, strong, and smart for knowing what you want in life.”

A small smile tugs at my lips. “But it also means that I’m a horrible girlfriend and I haven’t even had that title for twenty-four hours.”

“Don’t even think that. I think it’s great we aren’t letting this get in the way of success. You will do your thing there, I’ll do mine here, and we can make it work until you get back.”

“Yeah, but this was supposed to be it, the perfect time for us to be a couple. Now it’s the exact opposite. We may as well wait until I get back before we give this a real shot,” I say. I’m already using the bar as an excuse because I’m scared, but I don’t want to admit it.

He shakes his head no.

“You know what, we can do this. We can handle distance. Look at everything we’ve been through. Rockland, Colorado, is what—three hours from here? I’ll come down every weekend if I have to. I’ll do anything and everything if it means seeing you.”

I sipped my drink as he took a long swig of his beer. He came away with a foam mustache, and I had the craziest impulse to lick it. I smiled and stifled my laugh.

“What?” He raised his eyebrows at me. “Something on my face, love?”

“No.” I shook my head. “Not a thing?”

“Nothing?”

“Nope. Everything is totally normal.”

He took another swig, even more foam collecting on his upper lip.

“How about now?”

I giggled. “Perfectly fine. I see nothing amiss.”

He leaned in, the beer a mix of sweet and rich on his breath. “Care for a taste?”

My heart leapt into my throat and I stared into his eyes, the blue even deeper in the dimness of the bar.

He pulled me closer, his fingertips pressing into my shoulder. Before I could back away, his mouth was on mine, his lips firm and warm. I clutched his shirt as he pushed me into the wall, caging me with his muscular body. My breath was gone, stolen by him as he licked along the seam of my lips, asking for entrance. He slid a hand down to my lower back and pulled me against him, pressing my breasts hard into his chest. I gasped at the friction on my nipples and he plunged his tongue into me.

I moaned into his mouth, and he growled a low response. His tongue mastered mine, and he eclipsed any thoughts I may have had about propriety or people watching. There was only him, his mouth, his body, the heat he stoked inside me.

“Thanks, Nic. I’ve just—oh my God. You had sex!” She pointed at me with one hand and covered her mouth the other.

”What?” I asked looking to Piper for help.

”I can’t believe you slept with Corey Tate and didn’t tell me!” Corey walked in at exactly the wrong moment. “You!” Steph pointed at him.

”What?” Cored asked, clearly confused.

”You de-flowered my best friend, and you have the ball to act like it’s no big deal?”

Corey looked at me, and I just shook my head and looked down. I was so mortified. Just then, Moye walked back in. I couldn’t believe we were having this conversation. It wasn’t like I was ashamed of it. I just didn’t want everyone discussing my lack of virginity. Or the fact that I’d lost it.

“That just happens to be the best fucking night of my very private life,” Corey said. “So if you don’t mind, for the sake of my embarrassed girlfriend, could we just make this day about you and your baby and not discuss our sex life?”

“Corey! You love her . . .” Steph cried.

“Baby, let’s just go get ready for the shower.” Cole led her out of the kitchen. He mouthed sorry to us as he turned the corner.

“I heard the doorbell. Let’s go let more of your guests in.” Piper was talking to Steph, but looked back to Corey and smiled.

“Damn, that was funny.” Moye laughed. “Sorry, Nic.”

“What’s a day in our lives without my being humiliated?” I turned back toward my task at the counter.

Moye turned and walked out of the kitchen, leaving us alone. Corey came up behind me while I was scrubbing the counter. “I think you got it.”

“I don’t know how they knew. I didn’t say anything.” I turned into him.

“Baby, you don’t need to. They are your friends, they can tell. The same way Moye was ragging on me outside about being whipped.”

“Is it that obvious?”

“I don’t like to brag, but you’ve had a perma-smile on your face since that glorious night.” I knew when his eyes became glazed over, he was reminiscing.

“Stop thinking about it!” I hit him on the arm.

“You might as well get that out of your head right now. I will never forget it, and I will most likely think about it every minute of every day.” He tugged me close.

“You are such a pervert! Seriously though, thank you for saving me.” I kissed him.

“Always, Ace. Now let’s get this baby shower over with so we can go home and do what I was just thinking about.”

“I am home.” I giggled.

“In my mind, your home is my home. One of these days, I’ll convince you.”

“I’m sure you will.” I poked his abs.

You talk about swoon worthy you get that and so much more with Fighting Solitude. Aly has out done herself with this book. I could not put it down and couldn’t get enough either. You will not be disappointed with this one.

Author Bio

Victoria L James is a teenage girl stuck in a thirty-something year-olds body. Living somewhere ‘oop north’ in England, she has had a strong passion for words and stories going as far back as she can remember, which she credits to her grandmother and her love of reading anything that was on sale and cheap from the local market stall. Never once did she think she would release a novel, though. At best, she thought her love of language and her ability to create stories in her mind would provide her with a ‘get out of jail free’ card whenever she messed up and her parents were mad at her during her teenage years… and when even that didn’t work out, she thought she was pretty much done for.

When an opportunity presented itself for her to take a back seat from paid working life for a few years, she knew straight away that she had to try and write about a few of these worlds she’d come up with along the way, and quieten all the voices in her head without racking up a heavy psychiatry bill for the pleasure.

Wearing her heart on her sleeve and trying to lighten her friends’ and family’s lives with naff, and more often than not, badly timed, nineties jokes, she has yet to learn the art of knowing when to shut up. Which is another reason writing became a passion of hers. With pen and paper, there are no limits.

A firm believer in never quitting, with a ridiculous obsession for all things Rocky, she hopes that one day she writes a story that will inspire at least one person out there to keep on going if they’re struggling. Other than that, she’s just a regular old converse wearing, corona sipping, English version of Chandler Bing, who loves and adores her family more than life itself. Oh, and she also has two cats. “Don’t.
Don’t call me that, Ana. Not you. I can’t stand hearing you calling me that.”

I
looked up at him. “Why? Why can’t you stand me
calling you that? Why does it matter what I think?”

Jackson
dropped to the floor in front of me, almost at my eye level. His hand hovered
over my thigh,
but he withdrew it and shoved it into his pocket. “Because you are different, Ana Parry. You make me believe things can be
different.”

“But?”

His
downcast eyes told me all that I needed to know, but I braced
myself for the words. “They can’t. Braiden noticed. Noticed something between
us in the
cafeteria. I have to throw him off the scent. If he finds out about you, about us, things could turn to
shit very quickly. For both of us. It’s safer for you this way.”

I
raised my chin slightly, almost in defiance. “And I don’t get any say?”

With
one swift movement, Jackson clasped his hand around the back of my neck and
pulled me down to him. His face nuzzled into my neck and I felt him breathe me
in, and then he murmured, “It’s got to be this way. I fucking hate it, but it’s the only way.
I’m sorry. Please don’t hate me.”

“Jackson
I- I’m just so confu-”

His
lips came down on mine, and I grabbed onto him as if he was my air. As if I needed him
to survive. Jackson sucked my bottom lip into his mouth and a soft moan escaped
my lips as my body arched into him and my legs wrapped tightly around his waist. I needed to be closer, and our tongues danced and
dueled, causing our breathing to become rapid. This wasn’t like the kiss in
the closet—no, this was different. It was full of need and desperation… it was
goodbye.

I
couldn’t be the one to break away. I didn’t want it to end. I didn’t want this
to be it. I had
just found him and now he was leaving me. But all too soon, Jackson started to
untangle my legs from his waist and pulled away, placing one last chaste kiss
on my lips, leaving me in a crumpled mess on the floor.

“Ana,
we have to keep our distance. You can’t approach me or talk to me. And I will ignore you. You won’t exist to me.
I’m so sorry that I dragged you into this shit storm.” His fingers brushed over
my jaw as he stared down at me with such reverence that my insides coiled. “I know you still
have questions, but I can’t give you answers. Ana Parry…” He drew in a deep
breath, regret shining in his eyes. “…in another life I would have stolen your
heart and never returned it.”

just like that, Jackson was gone and my heart broke with realization…

He
already had.
