Playing the Game Special EditionCan you tell us a little about Playing the Game?

PTG wasn’t supposed to happen at first. *spoiler* I had no plan to write a series until Brad died in book one and as I grieved him, yes I grieved him too as it was also a shock to me that he died. Brad kept talking and talking that he wanted his scene to be written, he wanted his own book but I had to figure out a way to make that happen. Yes the book is about Derek but that is why Brad shadows the book so much.

Playing the Game is actually the second book in The Game series, do readers need to read the first book in order to completely understand and enjoy Playing the Game?

Absolutely you need to read book one. You need to get to know each character first and why they say and do the stuff that they do. Yes in book two they’ve grown, but I still feel it’s very important that you understand the development and bond they all have together.

What can you tell us about the first book, The Game?

The Game was written all in fun. Kirsten is my other half really, I’m very straight-shooting and I don’t give anything away when I make a business deal. I am often told I am a very hard person to read which sometimes comes off that I am a b*tch, just like Kirsten. If I changed professions and went into business, Kirsten is exactly how I want to be. I also have a strong bond with my high school friend twenty years later so it was important to me that Kirsten had that too.

What was the inspiration for Playing the Game?

Easy, I wrote a book about my ultra-ego. LOL

What about hockey and the NFL draws you in?

I’m not sure what draws me to hockey, besides that I’m Canadian and it’s a passion we share. When I watch the games at home, I’m loud. I talked to the players, give the coach my coaching opinions and I yell when stupid moves are made. Yet, when I go to a live game I sit and front of my seat never taking my eyes off the ice and I’m as quiet as a mouse. I really am the most boring person to take to a game. As for the NFL, I don’t watch and when I do, I’m lost because it different rules then the CFL.

Do you have a favorite hockey player or team?

My favorite team is the Oilers, there are my home team (you don’t cheer for another team other than your home team, that is just wrong) and don’t make fun of my team either because what you are going to poke fun at me with, I make the same statements. LOL! I don’t have a favorite player because it’s a team effort, not one play is better than another.

While writing Playing the Game plot and outline? If so did you follow it, or did it go off track and turn out differently than excepted?

I write an outline plot for every book and character, however when I start writing and developing each character they start to take over. I have yet to actually write a book that looks anything like my plot and outline. My books always turn out different when what’s in my head when I start to write.

How much control do your characters have over the outcome of the book? Did they throw any curve balls balls at you in Playing the Game?

Yes, the characters have a lot of control over my work, apparently. I find they all become bossy. Definitely curve balls are thrown in, such as Brad- he was not to die and Derek was to finish out his playing career due to an injury, not by choice.

What was going through Derek’s mind when he first held Liz’s son, Ryder?

I think tons of emotions were running through his head at one time. It’s hard to pin point which one to really focus on, a lot was happening at his point in time of the book.

Do you have a favorite scene/moment in Playing the Game?

Chapter twelve is one of my favorites because it’s real life. My favorite line is “Press Cougar Claudia.” LOL it still makes me laugh.

Do you identify with any of the characters in Playing the Game?

I have Kirsten work ethic but I also am entune to Liz’s nurturing.

Do you plan to write more about any of the characters in Playing the Game? Maybe one of Derek’s team members?

Adam and Caroline’s story is next followed by Logan and Steve’s. So far I have no plan to write another hockey book but if I was, I think Jonesy would get a book.

Do you aim for a certain number of pages or words each day?

No, I’m an erratic writer. With so much going on, on the farm at different times of the year it’s hard to sit and write some days. One day I will write eight pages, the next three days nothing then fifteen pages. My goal is to get two books out a year… maybe three.

When did you know you wanted to be an author?

I didn’t know I wanted to become an author, it wasn’t my intent at all. I have my schooling to teach special needs children and when I stopped teaching to have my family, writing found me when my youngest started kindergarten full time.

You have a number of books released, do you have a favorite?

Currently I have six books published with hopefully two more on the way this year and two more covers complete after that… with another one being developed in August.

When you’re not writing, what can you be found doing?

Reading, traveling, farming, 4H and of course chilling with my family and friends.

What are you writing now? Anything you can tell us about it?

When I come back from A Weekend With The Authors, in Nashville in May I am going to be starting an MC (motorcycle series) Waking Up In Leather. It’s not going to be your traditional MC book, it will focus more on romance but of course there will be crude things involved.

What is something that you find particularly challenging about writing or being an author in general?

The most challenging for me is to stick to deadlines, I absolutely SUCK at them. The other is reaching out to my readers, I wish there was additional ways to meet more of them, find out their story. I love book signings for this reason I don’t necessarily sell myself, I’d much rather meet the readers.

What advice would you give to writers just starting out?

Write for you and no one else! You will not please everyone and nor should you. Write because it’s a passion for you, not for another way to make an income- because it’s that’s the case you will be eating mac and cheese forever.

Do you have any writing rituals? Anything you must have while writing? Coffee? Candy? etc.

Candy, I eat so much candy it’s sickening really and when I edit I binge eat everything.

Who influenced your writing/life the most?

No one influences my writing because I write for me and what I want to read. But I will say this journey all started when I was thirty and I read my first ever book beginning to cover, then the entire series in three days. Thanks to Twilight.

Is there anything you’d like to say to your readers?

I truly can’t thank my readers and bloggers enough. This past year was a nightmare and each and every reader and blogger stuck by me till the bitter end and for that they will always have my gratitude.

Chance Godricson did not understand why he survived. If he survived. 
The next tremor or aftershock might give him his answer.
After walking the mall, searching the rubble, and shouting for anyone to
answer, he faced facts. Some kind of structural collapse above the
exclusive underground shopping center blocked all exits, paralyzed
elevators, and cut the lights. 
While
lingering in the Yellow Brick Mall shortly after the stores closed, to
await his appointment in the office building above, he had, for all
intents and purposes, been buried alive. But not for long. He would find
a way out or die trying. 
A
gold and yellow scarf floated across the mall floor like tumbleweed to
land at his feet. He grabbed it to bandage the gash in his right hand
while seeking the airflow that propelled it. 
Ah. A hole in the ceiling near a wall. A structurally sound place to end up.
He
began gathering and rolling heavy chunks of broken concrete to build a
makeshift stairway. Good enough, he hoped, for one risky climb. Hours
later, he thought—examining his work and flexing his aching hand—the
unwieldy monster just might get him out.
Yes, those steps could collapse . . . hopefully behind him . . . if he moved fast enough.
“Are you lost, too?” The voice shocked him. Chance shouted as he faced it. 
Not a ghost. An angel. Small, breakable looking, but evidently not.
He
had not heard her approach. The young woman appeared to have been
dipped in honey, and rolled in a thick layer of concrete dust. He
probably looked the same. Tear trails marked her cheeks that bore a few
small cuts, and still she was the most beautiful thing he’d ever seen.
“What have you been doing all this time?” he asked.
“Hiding. Expecting another explosion? Waiting to die?” She shrugged. “Except, I didn’t.” 
“Why didn’t you answer when I called?” he asked.
“Hands over my ears.” She shuddered and eyed his creation. “Is that supposed to be a stairway?”
“Yes.” It gave him hope, her recognizing it.
She tilted her head. “Why?”
“For our escape.”
She moved the dirt on her face as she swiped at her eyes with the backs of her hands. “From now on, I’m only shopping online.”
“Well,
let’s get you home so you can,” he said. “The ‘stairs’ can only take
one of us at a time. No hesitating, no looking down or back. Once you
take that first step, it’s a sprint. Pretend you have wings and can’t
stop. Promise.”
She threw her arms around his neck, her legs around his waist. “I’m not good at leading the way. Not at all good. You go first.”
“I can’t. I’m heavier. I might wreck it. You’re light as a cloud. You go.” With difficulty, he pried her off him. “Go. Now.”
She hesitated, shuddered, and swallowed hard three times. “Once I get there, you’ll follow?”
“What’s your name?” he asked.
“Kenya,” she said.
“So are you ready to live, Kenya?”
“Now, there’s a question.” She kissed his filthy cheek. 
He didn’t remember ever feeling both honored and unworthy.
“Who are you?” she asked.
“Nobody,” he said. “Just an unremarkable lawyer.”
“See you at the top, Mr. Nobody.” 
“Go.”
She
whined as she started but followed his instructions to the letter, a
sprint like no other . . . and still, she proved the weakness in his
creation. Her inner strength put him to shame as he held the beam
nearest the wall, below the highest point of the makeshift stairs. He
couldn’t let go until she made it. 
“Please let her make it,” he whispered.
He borrowed some of her strength when the beam beneath his hands began to shudder.
 
As
Kenya left the stairs behind her, the last one seeming to disappear
from beneath her shoe, she crouched, cradled by crossed steel beams in
the darkness between floors, her heart racing as another tremor seemed
to wreak havoc in the mall below.
Panic filled her with worry for the man who shared his stairs, until a hand wrapped in a yellow and gold scarf reached for her.
“Hey?” she called, taking that hand with both of hers. “How did you get here before me?”
He
pulled her through the darkness to the safety of the outdoors and the
dim light of dusk, somehow telling her to live for both of them.

“You wouldn’t dare!” Heat rushed through me at his threat. Because I was fucked up. Because I wanted him to want me. Because he was all I could think about—his face, his body, his scent, his twisted mind.

“Wouldn’t I?” He got to his knees and pulled me up before throwing me over his shoulder.

“What the fuck are you doing?” I beat at his back as he got to his feet and headed away from the house and toward the oaks that lined the driveway.

He ran his hand up my thigh and pressed hard against my pussy. “Hot and wet, just like I thought.”

“Put me down.”

“I will.” He strode into the shade of the oaks and pushed me up against one of them. The oak’s wide trunk hid us from the house.

I pressed my palm against his chest. “I’m not—”

He kissed me, pinning me between his chest and the tree. His hands roved me, and before long, he had one up my shirt, palming my breast through my bra. I dug my nails into his chest, but he only leaned in harder, as if he wanted my violence.

He ripped up my bra, exposing both breasts, and groaned into my mouth as he squeezed them. My knees went weak at his touch. Every thought of anger or hatred burned away as he consumed me as surely as fire does black powder. Breaking our kiss, he whipped me around to face the tree.

“Pull your pants down or I’ll do it myself.”

I glanced over my shoulder as he unfastened his belt. He ripped the elastic from my hair and tossed it aside.

“Do it, Stella.” He growled and slapped my ass.

I fumbled with my button and unzipped my pants. He did the rest, ripping them down my legs to my knees.

“Your visitor? Was that business?” I said, voice low, tight with anger I tried not to show him, hurt I’d sworn I would never show him. That anger, that jealously was mine to carry, and my pride stung at the idea of Maxim knowing about it. But despite my best efforts, my emotion was apparent.

To the undiscerning eye, it would have looked like Maxim had no reaction to my question. But my eye was discerning, and I had spent a great deal of my life studying him. So I saw the change, the slight flare of his nostrils, the way he momentarily thinned his lips, the way his jaw ticked. Only once, but once was enough. He was irritated. At my question or the emotion with which I’d asked it, I wasn’t sure.

“Asking questions about my business, Senna?” he said after he’d regained his composure.

I, however, had not regained mine.

“Is that what you call it?” I said, feeling reckless now as my gaze locked with his.

“Something on your mind, Senna?” he asked, his voice dripping with menace and warning.

I didn’t care.

“I know what you do with them,” I said.

“You know what I do with them?” he said, mimicking my words, giving me an opportunity to walk them back, an opportunity to let this go.

No chance that was happening now. I nodded, anger that had exploded full force making it impossible for me to stay quiet.

“Yeah. I do,” I said.

To my own ears my voice sounded malignant with anger, anger that was unjustified, indefensible, and more intense than almost any had ever felt.

“Tell me, Senna. What do I do with them?” he said, his eyes narrowing slightly for less than a split second, but his face almost instantly returning to its falsely placid default expression.

I narrowed my eyes at him, saw the slightest change in his expression. I had his complete attention now, and I could see he was curious as to how this would play out.

That was Maxim, always curious, always wondering, but rarely—never—giving anything away. That enraged me further. Why was I at the mercy of emotions I shouldn’t even feel while he got to stay distant, detached?

On any other day I would have tried to excuse my behavior, tried to smooth my momentarily lapse over and go back to pretending.

Today wasn’t any other day.

I couldn’t say why, and I had no clue what the consequences might be, but I was feeling brave, stupid with my anger. So I didn’t walk the words back, didn’t try to smooth them over.

I answered.

“She was one of your whores. You fuck them,” I said, proud when my voice barely cracked over the word “fuck.”

Maxim glared at me, his icy stare enough to make anyone cower. I was in no mood to cower, and for once, I didn’t care about his displeasure. He waited, no doubt expecting me to apologize for my language.

He’d be waiting for a very long time.

“I fuck them?” he finally said, his voice deep with his displeasure, his eyes dark with the same.

I nodded, not in any mood to speak.

“How do you know?” he asked, his eyes darkening further, his expression dropping into a foreboding frown.

I swallowed, frowned, and then, finally, spoke. “I saw you once.”

He leaned forward, the curiosity overtaking his anger. “What you see?” he asked.

I tilted my head toward his desk. “She was there, in front of you. On her knees.”

The words came out jerky with anger I wanted him to see, desire I didn’t.

“And you stayed? Watched?” he said.

I nodded, watching his expression for some sign of a change. I saw it too, a slight deepening of his eyes unlike any I’d seen before.

“What did you think when you saw that, Senna?” he asked, his voice grating out of his throat roughly.

I locked eyes with his, watched the darkness there get deeper, and decided in that moment to tell him the truth, consequences be damned.

“I wished I was her.”
