About The Author

cs

I was born on a cold day in January. They said I was the only baby in the hospital. They also said that I picked my head up twice to turn away from people who came to see me after I was born (Who wants strangers looking at you after such a life altering event while you are naked?). Not much has changed. That cold day was 30 years ago in South Carolina. Needless to say, I got the twang! At the ripe age of 22, I married my man bear pig hubby who happens to be from Chicago. I learned that there are people who do not have accents, who sound like they have accents because they don’t have accents. Mind blowing there. Our love story is pretty nifty. I met him online when I was 15 and chatted with him for four years, on and off as friends, until we met and I showed him some southern charm and BAM! Here we are ten years later with eight years of marriage and several fur persons rounding out the family thus far! My writing started as a child when I tried to write about three pewter statues of wizards coming to life. Books and words have always been a passion for me. My mind is incredibly random, if you talk to me for more than ten minutes, it becomes painfully obvious. I draw inspiration from absolutely anything and everything I come in contact with, with particular emphasis on music, pictures and the crazy situations in life. It is my hope one day to have a small hot air balloon tied to my chimney so I can write by starlight. I am pretty sure I would find that most inspiring.

Synopsis

Some people are blessed to find that one certain person who completes them.

Wrynn’s yesterdays were what others only dream of having. She and Tripp were the best of friends before they even thought about love. They had the fairy tale life where ‘like’ turns into ‘love’, and ‘love’ becomes ‘happily ever after’.

What happens when life conspires against you, and snatches your soul mate from your arms?

…only her forever love ended much too soon.

Broken beyond her own ability to repair, Wrynn boxes up her grief and attempts to raise her three girls the best she can on her own. As time slowly passes, Wrynn relives her life with Tripp while struggling most days to get out of bed. She is reminded of him at every turn.

How do you set your grief and anguish aside? How do you pick up the shattered pieces, put those pieces back together again, and try to move on?

Wrynn tries to find the joy in life every single day through her daughters, family, and friends. Her twin brother Liam has dedicated himself to helping Wrynn put her life back together after losing his own love. On the other hand, her mother-in-law lives to torment her at every turn. Wrynn can’t even find a chance to breathe, much less a desire to somehow search for her tomorrow.

Excerpt

That remark took Liam by surprise. From past conversations, he knew that she was from a small town in the eastern part of the state. Why would she know anything about another small, mountain town? Having graduated from there himself in 2006, he was more than familiar with the campus and town. “How in this world do you know where Cullowhee is? Talk about on the other side of nowhere.”

“Why, I’ll have you know that I’m a Western Carolina Catamount. Class of 2010.” She held her right hand out and flashed a dainty class ring.

This presented Liam the perfect opportunity. He reached out, gently grabbed her outstretched hand, and then bent closer as if to inspect her ring. Skin, soft and smooth as a feather, warmed his palm, and without thinking, he ran his thumb over her fingers, puzzled by the calloused tips.

“Guitar.” Her whispered words drew Liam’s eyes up to hers. She gave a nod toward her fingers. “I play the guitar. That’s why my fingertips feel like leather. No matter how much salve I use, they never get any softer.”

He gave her hand a quick squeeze before turning it over and slipping his fingers between hers. “I like that, though. There’s nothing wrong with having a talent that gives you a callous or two. You’ll have to play for me sometime. I bet you’re good at it.”

Color rushed to her cheeks, turning them a beautiful pink as she cast her eyes to the floor of the porch. “Back home, my brother and I would play for hours, and I never once thought about who might be listening.” Her lips pressed tightly together, and her brow furrowed, as if the thought brought back unpleasant memories. With a small shake of her head, she redirected her thoughts. “But since he died, I mostly just play for myself. Who knows, maybe I’ll see if I can work up the nerve to play for you. It’s been a while since I’ve had more than an audience of one.”

Though tempted to see if her face was as warm as it appeared, Liam resisted touching her cheeks. The last thing he wanted to do was to embarrass her even more. Next to his broad shoulder and long leg, she looked tiny and delicate, almost as if she were made from spun glass.

“Well, you just think about it, and know that, while I’d love to hear you play, I won’t pressure you to do it if it makes you uncomfortable.” With a quick glance at his watch, Liam noticed that it was almost time for supper with Wrynn and the girls. “I hate to run, but there’s a trio of ragamuffin princesses at my sister’s house waiting for me to come play. Wrynn’s off work tonight, so I’ll get a chance to talk with her, too. It’s definitely a win-win for me. Is six o’clock too early to pick you up?”

“Six sounds great. I’ll meet you here, if that’s okay with you. I just live right over there.” She gracefully withdrew her hand from his, and pointed over his shoulder to a line of employee cabins. “It’s an easy two minute walk, and besides, I’m not sure if your big truck would make it down the narrow drive.”

“That sounds great.” He grabbed her hand once more, placed a small kiss on the back of it, and turned. He knew he needed to leave right this minute, so with one last glance over his shoulder, he said, “I’m looking forward to it. I’ll see you then.”

Liam rushed to his truck, bewildered by the emotions and reactions evoked by that one little gal. He’d had to fight the urge to grab her up in his arms when she blushed. Her shyness brought out such a strong instinct to protect her. The only problem was that he had no idea what he would be shielding her from, or if she even needed him to do that for her. Nerves could also be causing his imagination to run wild. That was definitely something that he would need to think about, and the sooner the better. Who was he kidding? She would consume his thoughts until he returned to this very spot this evening.

As he drove through town, he turned the radio on in an attempt to drown out everything else. “I Drive Your Truck” by Lee Brice blasted through the speakers, effectively drawing every thought in Liam’s brain to Tripp. He was, at that exact moment, driving his brother-in-law’s truck, and a lash of pain sliced through Liam’s heart. Tripp had been so much more than just the guy who had married Wrynn. He had been Liam’s closest friend and brother. As teenagers, their lives entwined around Wrynn, and only the Army and college could have separated them. And separate them, it did. Even though he had been gone two and a half years, not a day went by that Liam didn’t remember just how good a friend, brother, husband, and father Tripp had been. Those same memories made Liam ache for a wife and children of his own, and for the first time in a very long time, he felt the first trickle of hope for his future.

Hope could be such a fragile thing, but he felt confident that his time had come, and he was determined to embrace that hope, and make the absolute best of it. Heck, he might even work up the nerve to talk to Wrynn about it if time allowed. The last thing he wanted to do was get her hopes up, or even worse, his mom’s hopes. And Lord knows, as soon as he said something, Wrynn would be on the phone with their mom.

When he got home, he headed toward his ‘front’ door. The short trip around Wrynn’s house to his humble abode in her basement never failed to show him just how lonely his life was. At times, the walls closed in to remind him that, while he was a piece of someone else’s puzzle, he had yet to be blessed with a puzzle of his own.

After entering the back door, Liam stopped as the memories washed over him – happy days when this was Papa and Nana’s house, he and Tripp drawing racetracks in the dirt floor of the basement, homemade ice cream and lemonade under the trees in the back yard, tire swings hanging from the tall oak trees – Family.

Long before Liam and his dad converted the old, dirt floored cellar into a luxury apartment, love, family, and happiness filled the space. If those walls could talk, they would tell the story of triumph over fear and laughter after heartbreak.

The pitter-patter of little feet scurrying across the floor above his head brought a smile to his face and his thoughts back to the present. The warm oak floors and wainscoting created a homey feel, and masculine touches definitely proclaimed bachelor. The whole picture screamed for the need of a woman’s touch. Sure, Maggie’s muddy handprints right inside the door added a certain flair, and colorful drawings covered every inch of his fridge, but borrowing his sister’s children only bore proof of the emptiness of his own life.

The longer Liam went without meeting that certain someone, the more difficult it became to fight the loneliness. Despair edged the colors of his life, and threatened to take over a little more each day. A whispered prayer, a mumbled plea, at times it all seemed futile.

Then the image of Elizabeth’s radiant smile intruded on his morose thoughts. Could she be the one? While hesitant to hope, he couldn’t deny the way she made his heart lighter with just a simple glance from her, the way his pulse sped up at her nearness. The simple touch of her hand made him want to pull her close.

When she’d spoken of playing guitar, her eyes had grown shuttered, and the mention of her brother brought pain to her voice. Like Liam, her past intruded on her present, but that only drew out his protective nature. His mother and sister were quite used to his somewhat caveman nature, but he knew better than coming on too strong with Elizabeth. He didn’t want to scare her off during their first date.

A quick glance at the clock let Liam know that he needed to go see Wrynn and the girls now or he might be late picking Elizabeth up. After grabbing an extra jacket and a clean blanket, Liam headed back around to Wrynn’s front door. He rarely, if ever, used the inside stairs. After all, if he didn’t respect his sister’s privacy, he sure couldn’t expect her to honor his.

As he stood on his sister’s front porch, giggles, love, and warmth escaped through the door and seeped into the deepest recesses of his heart. When he heard Wrynn’s telephone ring, Liam turned the knob, and found it unlocked. As he opened the door, he heard giggling down the hall, and watched in amusement as Wrynn tiptoed backwards toward the kitchen. Since it was obvious that she was deliberately being quiet, he decided to announce his presence as he walked into the house so that he wouldn’t startle Wrynn and make her scream.

“Knock, knock.”

Liam wanted to go check and see what the munchkins were up to, but when he walked further into the house, a familiar voice drew him toward the kitchen.

“Hi, Wrynn. This is Lara. It was so good to see you again today. I hope we can get together again real soon. We’ve got a lot of catching up to do. Anyway, we’re not going to be able to make it for supper tonight. I’m really sorry, but some things have come up. Talk to you soon. BEEP, MESSAGE HAS ENDED.”

Liam felt as if someone punched him in the stomach. After a decade, her voice was not one that he wanted to hear. Though unanswered questions plagued him at times, he was content with his life and excited about moving forward. He hadn’t seen or heard a word from her since their freshman year in college, and he classified her as a most definite part of his past, and not his future. He hoped that Elizabeth would be a part of that future, and now this?

Wrynn spoke to him, but his thoughts consumed him and drowned out her words. When the girls came into the kitchen, and Wrynn rushed them right back out, the only thing that crossed his mind was leaving, getting away from that voice, so he fled. He ran right out the front door, down the front walk, and straight to the truck without even looking back, but when he grabbed the truck door, Elizabeth’s face floated in his mind.

One fateful night. Convictions forgotten. Foundations crumbled.

For the past ten years, Liam lived his life with one foot in the present. He spent time with his parents, his sister Wrynn and her three daughters, and worked to build his business. His other foot was firmly planted in yesterday where his memories tortured him. Despite encouragement from friends and family, Liam rarely considered dating for fear of ruining another person’s life. After all, he obviously hurt Lara to the point that she ran with no further contact. Just when he met someone and felt ready to move on, that voice from his past once again exploded into his life.

Unexplained absence. Lives forever changed. Secrets revealed.

Fleeing was a way of life for Lara. When a call came ten years ago, Lara may have left Highlands, but her heart stayed behind with Liam. Now, another call gave Lara the words she needed so that she could safely return to the only place that soothed her soul. While anxious about seeing Liam after so many years, Lara knew that her reappearance would be the easy part for Liam and his family to deal with. What she worried about was the other information that she’d held close to her heart.

When past collides with present, one soul finds hope for tomorrow, and the other mourns for things that can never be.

During the spring and summer, you will more than likely find her outside puttering around in her garden. When the veggies start coming in, she will probably be sweating over a hot canner in the kitchen, canning all the goodies she is blessed with. Kathryn likes to hike and go camping, and gets to do this pretty often! On cold winter nights, you will probably find her wrapped in a warm blanket, lost in a good book, while sitting in her rocking chair on the front porch!

Kathryn was born and raised in North Carolina, and while she loves to travel, she can’t imagine ever leaving the mountains that she has come to call home. Not a day goes by that Kathryn doesn’t thank God for abundantly blessing her. He has been so good to her, and she is very grateful. She holds Jeremiah 29:11 very close to her heart and believes it with every fiber of her being. “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Kathryn loves flip flops, chocolate, sweet tea and dirt between her toes. As far back as she can remember, she’s had a book in her hand. Reading has carried her to places she will never go. It has introduced her to people that she will never meet. When life is great and when it is rough, she’s always been able to find a book to carry her through. She finally decided to write down some of the stories in her head and heart after dawdling around and wasting years dreaming. She hopes you enjoy reading those stories as much as she loves writing them!

He lives in Spain. I live in Canada.

He dresses in thousand-dollar suits. I’m covered in tattoos.

He’s married and has a five-year old daughter.

I’m single and can’t commit to anyone or anything.

Until now.Because when they say you can’t choose who you fall in love with, boy ain’t that the f*#king truth.

***

To a restless dreamer like Vera Miles, it sounded like the experience of a lifetime. Instead of spending her summer interning for her astronomy major, she would fly to Spain where she’d spend a few weeks teaching conversational English to businessmen and women, all while enjoying free room and board at an isolated resort. But while Vera expected to get a tan, meet new people and stuff herself with wine and paella, she never expected to fall in love.

Mateo Casalles is unlike anyone Vera has ever known, let alone anyone she’s usually attracted to. While Vera is a pierced and tatted free spirit with a love for music and freedom, Mateo is a successful businessman from Madrid, all sharp suits and cocky Latino charm. Yet, as the weeks go on, the two grow increasingly close and their relationship changes from purely platonic to something…more.

Something that makes Vera feel alive for the first time.

Something that can never, ever be.

Or so she thinks.

Claudia shrugged and pulled down at her yellow tee. “Not my problem. Eduardo is nice but Ricardo is really nice.”

“How did it happen?” I asked, kinda wanting the sordid details.

She was coy. “The way it usually happens.”

“Did you make the first move?”

Another shrug. “Why not?”

I swear, a shrug and a “why not?” were the Spaniards’ go-to answer for everything.

“Well, then I guess it seems safe—and a little boring now—to tell you that I have a crush on someone.”

Her brows quirked up. “Other than Mateo?”

“What?”

“You are sleeping with Mateo, no?”

“WHAT?!”

“No?”

“No!” I exclaimed, appalled. “Why does everyone keep thinking that?”

“Because you are always together,” she said simply. She took a sip of wine. “The attraction is very obvious. So, I figured you must be sleeping together.”

“He’s married!”

“Yes, but you are not.”

I shook my head adamantly. “It’s wrong. I don’t want to be the other woman. I’ve seen my dad go for the other woman, and I can’t put Mateo’s daughter through that,” I said. “Or his wife,” I quickly added.

“That doesn’t mean that you can’t have feelings for anyone else.”

“Yes, it does mean that.”

“Maybe you are meant to be together.”

“We’re not! There isn’t even a together. We’re just friends. I haven’t done anything about it, and so far my feelings are totally one-sided.”

Claudia got up off the couch and brought a pack of cigarettes out of her front jean pocket. “If you think it is on the one side, you have not seen the way he looks at you.”

She walked over to her small patio table and pulled out a chair. I got up and stormed after her, my nerves dancing excitedly.

“What do you mean, the way he looks at me?” I asked, lowering my voice in case there were people around listening. I felt like bouncing off the walls.

She slid the ashtray toward her as I sat down. “You do not see it. But I do. I think everyone does. He looks at you like…like you’re his favorite food.”

“Favorite food?”

She lit her cigarette. “Yes. You’re like his favorite food in the whole world. He wants to have you, eat you, devour you. He thinks about you all the time, craves you. But he cannot have you for one reason or another. Perhaps you upset his stomach. Maybe he is on a diet, yes? All he wants is a taste, but he cannot even have that. That is how he looks at you.”

I sat there, stunned, as some of her smoke blew in my face. That’s how Mateo looked at me? Like he wanted to eat me? I was pretty sure that’s how I looked at him. Just last night I was contemplating nibbling on his earlobes.

“And yes,” she said, leaning closer to me, a small smile on her lips, “that is also how you look at him.” Great, a mind reader. “But you are more subtle about it. You try not to let everyone know. But, we know.”

“There is nothing to know,” I reminded her, poking the table with my finger for emphasis. “We are not sleeping together. He is married. I have a crush. That is it. The end of the story.”

“A crush?” she questioned. “Vera, I think you’re in love with him.”

No fucking way. Not love. That did not happen with me, not ever and not now.

“You can’t fall in love in a week,” I told her heatedly.

“You can fall in love in a second,” she said with a snap of her fingers. “The heart has no regard for time.”

With that sobering thought, Claudia told me about her ex-boyfriend and how they fell in love at first sight then took the conversation back to Ricardo and their exploits. I envied her so badly right then and there. She could fawn over Ricardo, kiss him, fuck him, and no one would ever bat an eye. It was okay for them to be together. It wasn’t forbidden.

I gulped the rest of the wine and left her apartment, heading back to reception to meet Cristina for my next one-on-one, my mind and heart and hormones all over the place. Lo and behold, Mateo was walking up the path toward me.

He was on the phone, smiling.

His shirt was off and slung over his shoulder, exposing his bare chest, abs, and arms.

Holy fuck.

For a moment, I was sure that time had stopped. Or maybe ever single nerve, cell, vein, bone, muscle in my body just slowed as I took him all in.

From his thick-veined forearms to his sculpted shoulders and broad chest peppered with neatly-trimmed chest hair, to his six-pack abs, he had, by far, the best body I’d ever seen on a man. He kept himself in fine-ass shape, looking more like a young athlete than anything else. He and David Beckham had more in common than I thought, although David’s skin tone wasn’t as mesmerizing. Mateo’s color was amazing, just beautiful, this dark, golden bronze that covered him everywhere. I wanted so badly to just touch him, to lick the sheen of sweat off his skin. I bet he tasted like victory.

And to think this was the man that Claudia said wanted to taste me.

I really, really wanted to believe her.

Meanwhile, I was just standing there like I was melting into a puddle of myself. I clamped my mouth shut as he walked past and I heard him say into the phone, “No, mi tesorito, it was easy, I didn’t injure myself.” He was beaming, talking about the game, to his wife. To his tesorito. And he called their relationship complicated? This was complicated.

He winked at me in acknowledgement, his smile becoming broader. I tried to smile back but it wouldn’t come. I just stared at him, feeling stupid, foolish, and strangely rejected. In a perfect world I may have been his favorite food, but it still wasn’t what he got served every day. I turned around and walked down the hill, my heart feeling like a pincushion.

“Vera!” I heard him call out from behind. I stopped and nervously glanced over my shoulder. He was holding the phone’s receiver to his chest, grinning at me. “I need to ask you your question.”

“What?” I asked, hoping it was quick.

“Who is your favorite Spaniard here?”

Seriously?

And yet I couldn’t lie to him.

“You,” I said, more to myself than to him. Then I turned around and walked away as quickly as I could.
