“Emmie Rue.” I hear Jax’s deep southern drawl. I spin around, and whoa, in nothing but a pair of jeans, Jax Declan encourages my bravery to come back out and play. His eyelids lower. “Now,” he leans against the door jam, and crosses his arms over a muscle-crowded chest, “what brings you to my doorstep this evening?”

“Ah…” I go to take a step but lose my footing. I nearly fall into him. Shit, real smooth. I slap my hand next to his shoulder on the door frame so that doesn’t happen again. I blow the fallen hair out of my face and look up. Damn, he’s gorgeous. I sway a little closer. “Thought, maybe you lost my number.”

“Nope.” He shakes his head. “It’s still in my phone,” he says with a small smile, eyes gradually casting over my body from head to toe. Shit, what he does to me with those allusive gazes. “So,” he says, those sexy eyes finally making their way back to mine, “what’s up with the late night visit?”

Dammit. He’s looking all in control, all sober and shit. He knows what I’m here for, and he’s going to make me say it. I strum the tips of my fingers on the doorframe, staring at him as he patiently waits. “You know why I’m here.” There, I said it, and without a single slur.

His head tilts to the side, and he surveys me for another second. “You’re drunk, aren’t you?”

“Yep.” I nod, no sense in denying it now. Hell, I nearly fell into him for Christ’s sakes. “I’ve had a few.”

He rubs the back of his neck and takes a deep breath, looking up at me from long dark lashes. “Go home, Em.”

“What?” Okay, maybe he doesn’t quite understand what’s going on here. Maybe he needs me to spell this shit out for him. “In case you’re not getting it—”

“Oh, princess, I get it.” He drops his hand and shoves it into his pocket. “You’re drunk and you want to fuck.”

“Yeah…” I flip my hands out. “So?”

He bends down to my level, and he smells so damn good, fresh and clean, like he just got out of the shower. “So,” he looks right into me, no doubt, seeing my inebriated, randy soul, “you can turn your cute little ass around and take it back home, ‘cause I’m not gonna fuck you.”

“Not ever?” Oh dammit, did that shit just come out of my drunk, desperate mouth?

He grabs me by the chin. “Now,” his thumb strokes my bottom lip. Damn him and that stroking thumb! “You know the answer to that question.”

“And still,” I lick my lip, savoring his touch, “you’re not inviting me in.”

“Not tonight, princess.” He shakes his head. “But remember what I said.” His hand drops from my face. “I want that pussy untouched. Now be a good girl, Em, do as you’re told, and head on home,” he says just before he shuts the door in my face. Yeah! In. My. Face.

“Are you going to the fight this weekend? I know Trisha will be there, and I won’t even lie and say I don’t want you to be there.” Dylan’s words make my heart stop and my palms start to sweat. Say no, Raven! You can’t be close to him like this!

“Yeah, I’ll be there.” What? That’s the opposite of no, Raven!

Dylan’s smile is so bright it rivals every star I’ve ever seen. I can’t look away. It’s not one thing in particular about him that pulls me in, it’s everything. How could anyone not want to be close to him? How could I not want to be close to him?

“I’m still not sleeping with you.” I say it just as the door swings open, and an extremely disheveled Trisha and Ethan stumble in. I look at them briefly before I shift my gaze back to Dylan.

I’d always planned to get the hell out of my hometown as soon as high school was over. Hell, once I hit tenth grade, I couldn’t pack my bags fast enough. I wanted nothing more than to see that shitty little town, and all of its residents, shrinking in my rearview mirror as soon as possible.

What I hadn’t planned on was having someone in my life who was so important that he made me question everything and wonder if I should stay. Or, that someone giving up everything so he didn’t have to leave me. I couldn’t let him do it, couldn’t let me be the thing that held him back, couldn’t let his love for me destroy his dreams. So, I did the only thing I could do; I wrecked it all.

For me, there was no simplicity of burning bridges. No, I strapped dynamite to every single one, blowing them into tiny smithereens. Then, I’d bulldozed each surviving piece into a pile, doused it with kerosene, and aimed a blow torch toward the debris, just to make sure there would be nothing left. As the flames roared to life, I danced around the blaze, drinking whiskey straight from the bottle, toasting the life I’d had, acting like a crazed woman performing a sacred ritual. As the last of the ashes drifted into the sky, fading from red hot into cold black, I sobbed, knowing there was no way I could ever undo the damage I’d just done.

It was stupid, dangerous, and devastating, but I needed to make sure every single relationship I had was destroyed. The only way I would be able to move on somewhere else was if there was no reason left for me to go back, and no way I could ever show my face there again, even if I’d wanted to. Unfortunately, I needed to hurt him, to decimate him, so he would hate me and could let me go and build a stronger life without me.

The one thing I never thought about, the one thing I hadn’t taken into consideration, was that most eighteen-year-old girls are idiots. They run on pure emotion, thinking with their heart, not their head. I’d thought I was so mature, that somehow I’d had all the answers and knew what was best for everyone, so I made their decisions for them. In reality, I was just a naïve small-town girl with more fashion sense than common sense – and looking back at the pictures proves I didn’t know fashion for shit. What seemed like the perfect idea all those years ago was now my biggest regret.

I realise that I’ve been waiting to see her since the last time she was here. I’ve wanted to feel that electricity that fires off her when she holds my gaze, and every week that she’s not been here, I’ve been disappointed. We haven’t spoken, haven’t even exchanged smiles. There’s just something there. It’s like we seek each other out, and I don’t know why. It’s turned in to a habit I like more than the ecstasy I take.

“Hey Finny boy, Tequila, you in or you going for a piss?” Kyle calls out behind me loading his question with the silent search of my intentions for this evening.

I glance back at him answering “Yeah, man.” When I look back, she’s still there. Looking. Just looking. No smile. No scowl. Just looking at me like there’s something compelling her to do so. The light catches her lip ring and my eyes roam the length of her body like a hungry man that’s been starved for weeks, no, months. She gives off something that makes my hormones run rampant, like an unbalanced teenager. Only I’m fully aware that I’m a grown man and I know exactly what I want to do to her. I committed a felony on my thirteenth birthday.

I didn’t murder anyone; what I did was far worse. The crime was quick, it was careless, and it happened entirely inside my head. A wandering mind is a dangerous place.

I was at the library studying for a history exam when it happened. A girl sat down beside me and pulled out her books, spilling highlighters and pens all over the table. I’ve known the girl a long time; she’s been my best friend since childhood. She flashed her familiar smile, and an unexpected urge shot through me: I wanted to kiss her.

The forbidden thought flashed through my brain and vanished in seconds, but the intensity lingered behind, as if a magnetic force ripped through my whole body. My eyes grew wide. The pencil slid from my hand and landed on the table.

“What?” she asked.

I gaped at her.

She poked my arm. “Out with it.”

My mouth opened, but no words came out. I shook my head, backing my chair away from the table. Heart thudding like a bass drum in my chest, I bolted from the library.

Lying in bed that night, my mind raced, struggling to recall the exact wording of the Law I just broke. They made us memorize it in fifth grade, but only pieces clung to me: Only desire your Assigned Partner. Only kiss your Assigned Partner. Attraction to the Unassigned is forbidden, punishable by Banishment.

Tracy Bailey is not my Assigned Partner; she’s not even supposed to be my friend.

I hardly slept that night, but woke the next day relieved that my secret was safe. That’s the good thing about thoughts; they only get you in trouble if you share them.

My Partner is a girl named Lara Goodren. I met her at the Assigning Ceremony eight years ago, when I was six.

“I love you, Lara Goodren,” I said to her, when prompted by the Master of Ceremonies.

“I love you, Piren Allston,” she replied.

The audience erupted, clapping and hooting their approval. Mom and Dad snapped a million pictures as I wobbled on the stage, staring at the ground.

Then back to our seats, and on to the next couple. The whole exchange was awkward as hell, but I did it anyway, as expected and without question.

That was the first time I said “I love you” when I didn’t mean it. It wouldn’t be the last.

‘My inspiration for Retrace’

“I can’t put my finger on anything specific that inspired me to write RETRACE. It was more a blend of many things that eventually grew into a story about letting go and learning to love and accept. Some of the key elements that did inspire me though, were a few crazy, vivid dreams that eventually turned into scenes, music, a lot of music, and mainly the characters themselves. Reeves and Nia practically seized my mind to the point I couldn’t concentrate on anything else and just had to pour their story out of me. The book traces their hesitant journey into deep friendship that helps them cope with traumatic pasts, and gradually leads them to discover the path to heal and accept. As Nia and Reeves’ characters developed into people I believed my readers would feel strongly about, and connect with, in tandem the story took shape into an emotional ride with touches of angst, humor, suspense and a whole lot of steam…”
