I need a drink. I need an antihistamine, but I don’t have time to go rooting around in the cupboard for that shit because Ana’s going to be home any second, and I have orgasms to deliver and a question to pop. It feels like I’m at confession, getting ready to lay out all my sins and ask what I need to do for penance, “You know my relationship with most of my family is shit.”

“Yes,” she says softly, confusion evident in her voice.

“Luckily, you haven’t had much interaction with my mother, but she’s always getting into and out of trouble. Usually it’s something to do with drugs or alcohol, she’s been arrested for prostitution because she had to pay her dealer or she begs people for money because she owes somebody. She gets mixed up with people she shouldn’t be associated with at all. This time, the guy demanded names of people she was close to, she gave him my name of course. Constance and Henry will never give her money, and my grandmother doesn’t have much to give. Being in my life put you in danger, and I couldn’t allow that. Unfortunately, my fuck up of a mother gave them your name in an attempt to manipulate me, so they’re already aware of you. It also means there’s no reason for me to stay away from you, because they already know who you are.”

I’ve kept my gaze locked on her face throughout the entire explanation, watching her face grow more pale, knowing this is what I wanted to prevent. The last thing I want is for her to be scared or upset, but being a part of my life makes her ammunition for my mother.

“Did you not think I could handle it?” her voice is resigned, but I can hear the anger just below the surface. “That I’d want to be there for you…with you? We were great together, Jeremy…together we could have handled anything.”

Not wanting to explain my actions yet again, actions that were meant to keep her safe, I say, “I just wanted to protect you…” Before I can explain any further, she finally turns to face me, her eyes sparking angrily as she glares at me, her temper snapping.

“Are you seriously telling me that you stayed away from me just because your mom is a crappy person? You’ve made my life a living hell for six weeks because you wanted to protect me?” She stands, almost vibrating with fury and hurt.

As soon as she stops talking, I cut in, “Yes! It’s my job to protect you.” Doesn’t she get that? All of this was to protect her, from my damn mother’s bullshit touching her innocence.

“How do you know I couldn’t handle it? I’d do anything for you Jeremy!”

I stand now, struggling to explain further, because this is the last reaction I expected from her, but she cuts me off, her voice thick with tears. “Did it ever occur to you that I wouldn’t care? That I would want to be with you regardless? Do you really not realize how much I loved you?”

The fact that she uses the past tense doesn’t escape my notice, and my heart clenches painfully at the thought that I’ve done too much damage for us to come back from this. Before I can think about possible repercussions, I walk over to stand in front of her, my own hand shaking as I cup her cheek and ask, “Baby, what kind of man would I be if I didn’t want to protect you? Hurting you hurts me.” Bending so I can look straight into her eyes, I say, my voice rough with emotion, “You’re the most important thing in my world, Little Bit. The only reason I shut you out is because I love you so fucking much. If something happened to you because of my family, if being with me caused you to be hurt, I wouldn’t be able to live with myself. Knowing it was better for you that I stay away was the only thing keeping me from you.”

SarahBeth closes her eyes, shutting me out now, not allowing me to see what she’s feeling. “Dammit! Do you honestly think I’d push you away if I didn’t have a good fucking reason?” My voice rises with my frustration.

Her eyes fly open, pinning me with her angry stare. Jerking away from me, she spins around, and tries to get herself under control in a way that’s all too familiar. I can’t help but smile as she faces away from me, her hands balled into fists at her side, she’s breathing heavily as she attempts to calm herself down. Finally, she turns back to me, but takes a step back, keeping her distance. She thinks that putting space between us will keep me away from her, but she’s wrong. I’ve lived six weeks without her; I’m not going a minute longer.

“God, you make me so mad,” she seethes, looking at me in a way that makes me worry over sensitive body parts and what she might do to them in retaliation. “I can’t believe you would do that, that you would just cut me off and take yourself out of my life without even telling me what was going on. I just…” her voice breaks and I watch as she deflates in front of me, no longer the angry little madam, but a sad young girl instead. “If you only knew…”

Unable to take it anymore, the distance, the emotions, the whole damn situation, I take the three steps necessary to take her in my arms, refusing to let her go, even when she struggles. That might make me the worst kind of man, but she only pushes against me for a second before relaxing, clutching my shirt in her fists and burying her head in my chest.

SPENCER (JONES)

My head pounds, alerting me to the fact that I’m alive. Barely. I run my hand over my bare chest to find a set of fingers clad with rings. Her hand continues over to my hipbone, and curls around my side. I turn to see her face buried in the pillow beside me, a cascade of fiery red curls tangled down her back, a strong contrast to her pale skin.

I strain to lift my head off the pillow, and there he is. Ryan. On the far edge of my king-sized bed, face down, bare arse and all.

I’m here again. My life on repeat.

My liver screams out its hate for me, and my body aches in silent protest. And why the fuck is my arse sore?

I wriggle to release myself from her hold.

I don’t like them to stay, but Ryan and I were obviously too fucked-up to care. I must’ve passed out, because normally I deal with their exit.

I don’t do mornings. I don’t do awkward. I like simple hook-ups, and then “see ya”; No expectations, no complications.

This here looks complicated.

Walking naked across my bedroom, the floor littered with condom wrappers and clothes, I pick up a rogue black leather shoe and throw it at Ryan’s arse.

He chokes on his snore, and stirs. “Hey, what the fuck, man?” He rolls over, thankfully tugging the tangled sheets with him to shield his dick. I don’t need a vision of his giant cock in the back of my head today.

“What’s up is that you and Princess Redhead need to leave, buddy. I gotta get to work,” I whisper loudly. Working for Dad today is totally gonna blow.

Ryan swings his legs off the bed, and stretches his arms over his head. “Well, you never fail to disappoint, man. Guess I’ll catch ya next time I’m in town.”

I take a white crumpled towel that I must have left on the floor yesterday and wrap it around my hips. “That depends, mate. If you’re the reason my arse is sore, then this was the last time. Oh, and you might just get the shit kicked out of you.”

He chuckles quietly to himself. “You don’t remember?” He grabs his jeans from the floor in front of him, and slips them on.

“Remember what?” Oh no. Ryan did not go there. I’ll kill him. On instinct, my teeth grind against each other, and I breathe out heavily through my nose as I stalk towards him.

He holds up a hand. “Relax,” he says, as he juts his chin towards the redhead. “Miss Ginger Sex Fiend over there brought toys.”

“Fuck,” I gasp. I’ve seriously gotta lay off the drink.

“Now, get outta here. I’ll take care of Ginger.” Ryan winks, and runs his hands through his mussed up sandy-coloured hair.

Yeah. I need to get to work.

I jerk around in my seat, trying to look closer and when I see Tyler watching after them, holding a purse and a few shopping bags, I know for sure it’s them. At my nod, Mel touches my hand, bringing my gaze back to her earnest one. “Don’t you want to go check on her? Make sure she’s alright?”

Do I want to? Yes, absolutely. Should I? Well, that’s another matter entirely. I look back to the corridor they disappeared through, but don’t see them any longer. Just when I’m about to tell her no, I don’t want to check on her, Tyler’s eyes meet mine and the blatant worry in them has me nodding and heading in his direction. I don’t look back to see if Melanie followed me because honestly, all I can think about is what could possibly put that look in Tyler’s eyes.

“Is she okay?” It’s all I can do to keep my voice level when I reach him and ask the question I need the answer to the most.

Tyler’s looking everywhere but at me when he replies, “Yeah mate, she’s fine. You can go back to whatever you were doing now.” His voice is hard, it’s easy to tell he’s not happy at finding me with Mel, but his feelings aren’t what worry me now.

Before I can ask any more questions, Olivia and Sarah are walking back in our direction. They both stop in their tracks when they see me standing with Tyler. The moment she notices Melanie standing next to me her already pale skin loses all color and she begins backing up, away from our little group. The hurt in her eyes has me moving towards her before I can even process it. I want to explain myself. When what I’m doing registers, I stop, trying to keep myself in place, but when her eyes fill with tears and they overflow, rolling soundlessly down her cheeks, I melt.

Reaching her, I cup her face in my hands, brushing away the tears as she trembles beneath me. It’s the first time I’ve really touched her since everything went to shit and having my hands on her, having her this close to me, I feel like I’ve come home. Unable to hide the emotions racing across my face, I let her see just how much I’ve missed her as her breath catches in her throat. Her eyes are bouncing back and forth between mine in disbelief while the look on her face has me aching to touch my mouth to hers, to pull her into me so I can hold her.

I don’t get the chance to do any of that because at the same time a hand touches my back, SarahBeth sucks in a breath and steps back, her eyes brimming with tears even while she glares up at me, betrayal all over her face. I want to explain, to tell her what I’m doing here with Mel, to reassure her that it’s not what it seems, but in the back of my head I think this is a good thing. I want her to let go of me, to begin to move on, to find someone that deserves her. Letting her think I’ve replaced her, no matter how much it hurts us both, is probably for the best.

“Wait SarahBeth,” Melanie begins as I step away from her touch. Instead, I grab the hand that was on my back and link our fingers together, this draws both her eyes and SarahBeth’s. Mel’s looks confused, but SarahBeth’s guts me. She stares at our linked hands with an expression that’s a cross between fury and despair before swiping her hands across her cheeks to brush away the few falling tears, and meeting my gaze head on.

Her eyes are sparking with a fire I haven’t seen in so long that I’m almost relieved. As she straightens her spine and holds her head high. she turns to Mel and smiles. Just barely tipping the corners of her lips up her smile is clearly fake but there nonetheless, she says, “It’s fine really. I’m glad he has someone.” Mel starts to speak up, but SarahBeth keeps her eyes on me as Olivia walks up beside her, puts an arm around her shoulder and glares at me. If looks could kill…that girl hates me. She starts to say something in her ear, but Sarah shakes her head. “There’s nothing to say. I’m done with this,” with that said she scoots out from under Olivia’s arm and turns her back on me, this time I’m sure for good, and leaves me to watch her walk away from me this time.

Tyler hurries to walk after them, muttering, “You’re a bloody idiot mate,” as he passes me. He doesn’t get far before he stops, turns around and glares at me, much like Olivia did. “If you only knew…” he shakes his head, “Well, that would have gone a lot differently.” I don’t get the chance to ask him what he means before he heads after them, dropping an arm across each of their shoulders and handing the bags he was holding to Olivia.

I fell in love with this series from the very first book! Kimi has done an amazing job with the story of each charter that is brought in to these books. I have to tell you that I think Bri and Josh’s story is the best so far. Kimi will have you falling so fast and hard for these two that you just can’t get enough of them. These two show you a love that is destine to break even before they get started. Bri seems to not be able to find the perfect man, hurt and refuse to believe there is true happiness. Josh had the glamorous life that’s so many dream of yet it’s not always so great. Having been through some hard times and just wanting to find his quite spot in life, he crosses path with Bri; who he can’t seem to get out of his thoughts. These two are going to take you ride that show you just how much you can have in life if you just fight for it!

A surprised bark of laughter escaped Rhys. “Damn. You don’t have to lure me to the dark side. I’m a hair’s breath away from exploding inside my jeans just from you breathing on the side of my neck.”

“I think I’ll have to pass on meeting your brother tonight. As you know, I’m not opposed to a public display. If you’re not in the truck in the next five minutes these people are going to get a much different show than they paid to see.”

He made it there in two. There were bruised toes and ribs along the way as he barreled his way to the door. Rhys was beyond caring. His dick was desperately beating against the zipper of his jeans begging to be closer to Asher. Yellow lights flashed as he hit the button on his keyless remote. Asher climbed into the passenger side while Rhys jumped in behind the wheel. He didn’t stop there. Rhys kept going until he was pinning Asher against the seat. Something sharp bit into his knee. He hit his elbow on Asher’s door. Nothing mattered except the taste of Asher’s lips…the sounds of his moans.

The parking lot, while filled with cars, was empty of people since there were matches scheduled for several more hours. Rhys wouldn’t have cared even if they weren’t alone. His patience was at an end. The back of his head stung where Asher gripped his hair at the roots holding him in place. The rich smell of Asher’s cologne teased Rhys’ nostrils as he dragged air into his lungs. He was starving. His hunger for Asher was more powerful than anything he’d ever experienced. It was unequaled.

Without waiting for permission, Rhys tore at the button on Asher’s jeans. Damn his mouth made him hot as hell. Rhys wanted more. Traveling south, he nipped at the column of Asher’s throat while setting his erection free. His hips left the seat as Rhys encircled it.

“Fu-”

Rhys smiled as the strangled cry died in Asher’s throat.

“Tell me what you want,” he demanded while snagging Asher’s shirt in his teeth and dragging it upward. His sculpted torso came into view. Rhys dipped his head, swiping his tongue over the ridges. Ragged breathing met his question. Rhys froze refusing to budge until he heard the words. “Say the words, Ash.”
