The sun shone overhead, the temperature neared ninety, and the humidity was hair-curlingly high on the Caribbean island of St. Lucia, making it hard to believe a hurricane was coming soon. Ella Shaw glanced up at the blue sky, knowing it wouldn’t remain pristine for long.

The calm before the storm.

She pulled her hair into a high ponytail and headed out of her hotel, determined to hit the local gift shop she’d caught sight of on her way to the photo shoot yesterday. She’d seen long, draping, blue-beaded necklaces from the storefront window, but she hadn’t had time to stop. Her boss was a stickler for getting the right shot in the exact light, and they’d worked well past dark. By the time they’d wrapped for the day, the store had been closed.

As an assistant for Angie Crighton, a fashion designer based in Miami, Ella was responsible for the little details involved in a photo shoot. And though Angie, the photographer, and models had left the island this morning, Ella had stayed to make sure the shooting site was clean, the hotel pleased enough to allow them back another time. And if she were honest with herself, she liked the downtime after the craziness of a photo shoot, the rushing around of the crew, the bossiness of some of the models and, of course, of Angie herself.

Ella appreciated the fact that she had time to souvenir shop for her best friend, Avery Dare. How ironic was it that the two girls from very different worlds had met at all? But they had. And it was Avery who’d introduced Ella to the finer things in life, leading her to seek out a job with an haute-couture designer. Whereas Avery came from a wealthy family, Ella had been raised firmly middle class, but the two girls had bonded instantly. They’d even shared an apartment until recently, when her best friend had moved in with her rock star boyfriend, Grey Kingston.

Yep, two different worlds, even now, Ella thought wryly. But their friendship was solid. Which reminded her, she needed to let Avery know she might not make it back to the States tomorrow as planned.

When Ella had heard about the storm changing course, she’d tried to book an earlier flight out, without success. She shivered at the possibility of being stranded here alone during a hurricane and knew Avery would like the news even less. Her best friend suffered from severe anxiety, and Ella didn’t like to make her worry.

She’d just buy Avery an extra gift to make up for it, she thought, walking into the shop. She immediately headed to the turquoise-blue beads she’d seen through the window. The shopkeeper claimed they were Larimar beads. Even if they were fake, the beads, popular in the Caribbean, were said to have healing powers. Ella purchased two dozen, a mix of bracelets and necklaces, so she could share with the children at the cancer treatment center where she and Avery volunteered.

Avery had been nine, Ella ten years old when they’d met at a Miami hospital, both donating bone marrow, both there at the behest of a parent. Neither of them really understanding what was happening. All Ella had known was that she was doing a favor for her father, helping the stepmother Ella didn’t like all that much to begin with. Even at a young age, Ella had been a good judge of character, a better one than her father, obviously, because shortly after Janice had gotten well, she’d left Ella’s dad. And both her father and Ella’s life had gone downhill from there. Ella shook off the thoughts of her past before she could go deeper and darker, and focused on the pretty jewelry.

She spent some time choosing a thick turquoise bracelet for Avery and a similar one for herself before paying for everything and waiting for the shopkeeper to wrap things up.

Bag in hand, she started back to the hotel, cutting through side streets and looking into the windows of the stores, soaking up the culture along the cobblestone streets before heading back to Miami tomorrow. At least, she still hoped she’d be home. Knowing she couldn’t change the outcome, she pushed her worrisome thoughts aside. She’d deal with the situation as it came.

Sweat dampened her neck from the humidity of the island, and she contemplated taking a cab back to the hotel. She reached into her straw bag and pulled out her cell phone to make the call, when, without warning, she felt a hard jerk on her purse.

“What the—?” She spun around, but whomever wanted her purse was quicker.

She barely caught a glimpse of a tall guy with dark hair as he yanked harder, nearly pulling her shoulder out of its socket before slamming her against the nearby building with his other hand.

Her head hit the concrete wall, and spots immediately appeared behind her eyes from the impact. As she struggled not to pass out, the man grabbed her purse, along with her cell phone that had fallen to the ground.

She opened her mouth to scream, but nothing came out. Her legs collapsed beneath her, and she fell to the ground, her head smacking the sidewalk before everything went black.

In the era of free love and nickel beer, I was ‘the good girl.’ From a family whose finances were wrecked by the sudden illness of my father, my Mom took the reins and went to work. Watching her taught me to value security more than dreams. Every penny counted and was counted twice.

I wrote stories as a girl and laboriously printed them in spiral notebooks, but I put aside my childhood dreams and took a job teaching high school English in a tough inner city school to put my husband through graduate school— until a fight interrupted a lesson on subjunctive mood and verb tense. Two students fought out of the classroom and into the hallway while the rest cheered them on. One picked up the other and threw him over the staircase where he landed with a wet thump.

I quit at the end of the year, went back to school, and studied broadcast journalism, spending more than three decades producing news shows, telling other people’s stories, and running educational television stations for universities, and teaching. A bout with cancer, a divorce or two, and the conclusion of raising two wonderful children refined my focus, and I returned to my first love, writing.

Romantic mysteries are complex puzzles solved by complicated, conflicted characters who have interesting relationships, and I love reading them. The Nation series is set on the Navajo Nation, and the setting is always a character– – the dry mountains, and the sweeping deserts, occasionally pounded by rains that turn the dry washes into rivers of mud and debris.

In No Reason to Hide, a female Navajo cop struggles to save her younger brother from an Indian gang, and the evil which stalks him for revenge.

Excerpt:

My younger brother’s grin was triumphant. “Don’t play yourself or me for stupid. I’m a Cobra.”

“Where were you last night?”

“Oh, so now you’re not my loving caretaker. You’re a cop.” He jacked his pants up to his waist. Buttoning and zipping with only one good hand was hard for him.

“Don’t you ever talk to me like that. Knowing where you were last night is caring for you. Answer me.”

He barked, “I was home. Mom was there. She can vouch for me. She’s working days.”

If Mom was working day shifts, she could back him up—if he was telling the truth. If he wasn’t, well, I didn’t want to think about it. “I’ll ask Mom.”

“Yeah”—he sneered—”you do that. Check up on the little bro.”

“Stop acting like a jackass. You have a family who loves you, and you have opportunities if you don’t screw them all up. Here, throw your shirt around your shoulders. I’m taking you home, and then I’m going back to work.”

“Is Mom going to be at home?” He sounded like a little boy, and his eyes were rounded with fear.

“Mom will be home after work. Would you like me to pick you up a burger? You can eat before you go to bed. I’ll call and check on you until Mom gets home.”

“Yeah, I’m hungry.”

Still not a thank you, but less mouthy. He needed help getting up on the running board and into my police unit. I drove through Burger King and then on to Mom’s house. She lived on the Nation in a weather-beaten single-wide where the three of us had grown up. I vividly remembered the day the front door banged shut behind my Dad. What I hadn’t known was his back was the last I would ever see of him.

But it’s hard to move past her own insecurities, and Taylor isn’t sure if she’s ready to let Cal prove that not all rockers are heartbreakers.

She knows music can heal her heart, but what if only Cal can make her whole?

Love's Riff Teaser 2
~ Excerpt ~
Cal pushes my hoody off my shoulders

and I struggle out of it. I shiver, not from the cold but from his fingers running down my arm and his lips kissing up to my jaw line.
“Taylor.” His husky voice forces me to turn to him. His eyes glint in the streetlight as his hands gently cup my face, holding me there, eyes searching mine. Is he waiting for me to tell him to stop? But I don’t want him to stop, so I lean forward, my hands rest on his thighs and press my lips to his. I don’t know who is more surprised at my boldness, especially when my tongue slips past his lips and into his mouth. Cal’s hand cups the back of my head, tilting it so his tongue can explore mine.
Our heavy breathing is amplified as our kiss deepens and Cal’s free hand slides down my body, over the curve of my breast and disappears under my tank top. My breath hitches as his fingers brush against my skin before he cups my breast in his hand. Then he pauses, as if checking that I’m okay with this. And I am. My god I am. No flinching or feelings of revulsion, if anything I want more. My hands move up his muscular thighs and because I am only able to focus on what his thumb is doing to my nipple they keep moving until I brush against the erection filling his jeans. Cal groans, his tongue and thumb falters in their rhythm.
The material of my bra is pulled away and his hands push my tank top up my body. Cal dips his head and his hot mouth closes round my puckered nipple, his tongue teasing me with long flicks. The pulse between my legs pounds furiously and the ache becomes so intense it’s uncomfortable. Biting on my lip I try to stifle the moan that is building inside me but I fail miserably.
Cal pulls back and rests his forehead against mine. My lips tingle from our kisses and I press them together.
“I should be apologizing but I won’t. I have wanted

to do that since Saturday night.”

As a boy, he was like an older brother to her.

As a teenager, he became her secret crush.

As a man, he’s her target and she’s determined to get him out of her system once and for all.

Jake Wilde doesn’t live a tame existence. He never has. He never will.

His career as a smokejumper in Alaska? Dangerous.

His female conquests? Copious.

His stance on commitment? Never happening.

But when the girl from his past shows up at his door as a woman, Jake Wilde is about to learn a valuable lesson. Never, ever play with fire . . . unless you’re looking to get burned.

AP new - excerpt.jpg

I was smiling to myself when I broke into the room. I had him. The sweet, innocent act wasn’t going to work on the likes of Jake Wilde. He was a hunter. It wasn’t much sport to chase the mewling timid lamb. But game on when the prey was a sleek, powerful leopard.

The room looked like a big rec room, where the smokejumpers probably did everything from eat meals to watch movies to play board games. Right now, most of them were stuffed around a table playing what looked like poker. When they saw me, they lowered their cards to the table and diverted their attention.

“We weren’t expecting the Playboy centerfold visit until next month,” the pretty blond one with perfect white teeth piped up first, rising from his chair. “But I’ve always been a fan of surprises.”

I kept the eye-roll to myself. No need to offend anyone in the first minute I was here. I usually saved that for day two. “I’m Bree Chase. I’m here to write an article on the smokejumpers of Alaska.”

Blondie’s brows came together, like I’d just spoken gibberish. A few of the younger guys were too mesmerized by my rack to hear anything, and the rest were kind of just staring at me like I was going to be their next spank girl.

I’d changed into something more conservative than what I’d showed up in to Jake’s place, but most of them were still looking at me like I was standing in front of them naked, stroking my clit with one hand and my breasts with the other.

Guys.

I should have been used to it by now, but it still surprised me how much power women had in this world. We could have totally ruled it if we wanted to. But we were too smart for that.

One of the older guys stood up and moved toward me. He was staring at my face, possibly the only one in the room doing so. For as flat as I’d been in high school, the fairy godmother of Venus waved her wand my direction the summer after graduation. My boobs had swollen to the point that jogging was just too uncomfortable to do with any regularity, and my ass had popped too. It made clothes shopping a nightmare, and made being introduced to a guy and having him look me in the eye an impossibility.

The curse and blessing of being a woman.

“Miss Chase. Of course. Glad you’re here, and just ignore these guys. They’re animals. They do one hell of a job fighting fires, but we don’t let them out of their cage much other than that. They’re a menace to society.” The older guy was rewarded with a chorus of jeers and poker chips flying his way. “My name’s Jim Conway, but around here, I’m called Captain.”

I liked this guy. He could shake my hand, introduce himself, and look in my eyes. “My name’s Bree Chase, but wherever I go, I’m known as the ballbuster.”

When Captain chuckled, the corners of his eyes creased. “Well, boys. You heard the lady. Who wants to get in line first to get their balls busted?”

I’d never seen grown men move so fast. In less time than it took me to tame my smile, every single guy was standing in a straight line in front of me.

I was about to point my pen at the first one in line—go figure, it was Blondie—when someone powered up to the front of the line and shoved everyone back.

“Well, Miss Chase, looks like Jake’s up first.” Captain winked at me, slugging Jake’s arm as he headed back to his hand of poker. “Think you can handle him?”

Jake shoved the rest of the guys pushing on him, making their complaints for his cutting in line known. He was acting possessive. Protective. Almost jealous. That was a good thing. A sign he didn’t like the idea of sharing me or my time with any of these other guys.

When Jake looked down at me, I cocked an eyebrow. “I know I can handle him.”

I am Emmalyn Mikaelson.

My husband, in a rage, hit me in front of the wrong person. Diego, or Kincaid to most, beat the hell out of him for it. I left with Diego anyway. Even though he could turn on me just like my husband did, I knew I had a better chance of survival with Diego. That was until I realized Kincaid could hurt me so much worse than my husband ever could. Physical pain pales in comparison to troubles of the heart.

I am Diego “Kincaid” Anderson.

She was a waitress at a bar in a bad situation. I brought her to my clubhouse because I knew her husband would kill her if I didn’t. Now she has my protection and that of the Cerberus MC. I never expected her to become something more to me. I was in more trouble than I’ve ever been in before, and that’s saying a lot considering I served eight years in the Marine Corp with Special Forces.

EXCERPT

“Since you kissed and made up does that mean I get to stay at the clubhouse tonight?” I turn my attention from Em as she flits around the bar like she’s worked here her entire life, and look at Kid, who has a hopeful look on his face.

“I hate to burst your bubble, but so long as she’s at Doc’s, that’s where you will be.” He sighs, loudly. “What?”

“I just figured since you guys,” he does this weird side pump with his hand at his waist, “you know… I figured you’d be staying there with her.”

“I told you we took a nap.” I tilt my already warm beer to my lips and take a sip.

“Really? I thought that was code for getting laid or something.” Shadow laughs boisterously beside him.

Slapping Kid on the back, “Sorry Kid, if the Prez isn’t getting pussy, it looks like you’re not getting pussy either.”

I grin when Kid’s face falls and realizes that what Shadow just said is a pretty accurate analysis of the situation.

“If you’re having trouble sealing the deal, Prez, I can give you a few pointers.” The scrape of Shadow’s chair as he moves away from Kid makes my lip twitch in an almost smile.

Shadow’s reaction would be fitting almost any time one of the guys made some dumb ass remark about me not being able to handle any type of situation. Kid is lucky I was able to wrap my arms around Emmalyn for a few hours this afternoon, or his ass would be laid out on the nasty bar floor by now.

“First off,” I say putting my beer down on the table, “I don’t need any pointers from you.” I tap his chest with my finger. “Second, if Em was just some other piece of pussy to me, I’d have already had my one and done.” I lean in closer, so he knows how serious I am. “You don’t need to worry about my dick and what it’s doing or not doing with Emmalyn.”

He reaches up and rubs his chest where my finger hit it. “I’m not worried about your dick, Prez. I’m worried about mine.”

Shadow laughs again, and I can’t help but join in at the wimpy sound of Kid’s admission.

I hit the side button on my phone to check the time. “You have three hours until I take her home. If you need to get your dick wet, you better do it in a hurry. I expect you back at Doc’s no later than one-thirty.”

He jumps with an ear to ear grin, slaps me on the back, and whistles loudly to a blonde across the room. I watch as she downs her drink, grabs her purse, and heads to the front door.

“Thanks, Dad,” Kid whispers in my ear as he heads in the direction of his all-too-willing conquest of the night.

Kyler Jefferson was just sixteen when her family was brutally
murdered. Left pregnant and alone she has been running for nearly a decade from
place to place, terrified that one day they would be found by the mysterious
caller with sinister intentions.

Since the deaths of his mother and sister, Caleb Hudson has been
living the bachelor’s life. As a private investigator he usually handles
cheating spouses and missing persons, which suits him just fine. While
investigating a routine case he finds himself thrust into Kyler’s life,
consumed by a profound need to protect her from a past he knows nothing about.

They are two people going down
separate roads; one running for her life, the other trying to maintain what’s
left of his own. How can they preserve their lives when fate has decided she
has other plans?

Author Bio
J Haney
I was born and raised in Kentucky. I reside in Greenup County,
Kentucky with my family. My debut novel, An Unexpected Love, released August
2015. I’m a single momma to my eight-year-old daughter, Jessalyn Kristine. I
also take care and homeschool my autistic cousin, Aiden Sean, he’s nine years
old. I love photography and seeing what I can capture through the lens! I just
started plus size modeling and have been 5 or 6 pattern covers now. Both kids
model as well, I suppose you can call us “One Big Modeling Family. I’m probably
the biggest book whore, I know. I love books of all genres and get excited when
I’m introduced to a new author. I’m often told I act like a kid in the candy
shop, which I could totally see!
