I tried my best to ignore him, but I could feel his eyes settling on me. I took a deep breath when he got up and sat next to me. “Well, at least I know your real name now.” I shook my head, still trying to avoid eye contact. “So, how’s your ass doing?”

“What!?” I finally turned my head and looked directly at him.

“From your fall the other day.” I looked away. “Was I really that much of an ass to you during high school that you are still carrying a grudge all these years later?”

“Don’t flatter yourself. It has nothing to do with you.”

“Oh, okay. So, are you bitchy like this to every guy you come in contact with?”

“Yeah, maybe I am! What’s it to you?”

He held his hand up in defense. “Doesn’t matter to me one bit, sweetheart, but you’ve clearly been shafted by a guy a time or two to have an attitude like that. I mean, don’t get me wrong. The bitchy ones are better in bed with all that pent-up aggression.” He smirked and took a sip of his beer.

“Oh, you are such a pig, you know that? You are the same arrogant ‘I’m so in love with myself’ jock you were back in school! Well, reality check. Despite the fact you may have never grown up, most women have. So your good looks, perfect body, and smooth talking will no longer work.” He chuckled loudly. “What’s so funny?”

“I think you just admitted you thought I was good-looking and had a perfect body.”

“No. That’s not what –” He had me feeling so flustered. “I meant MEN, in general!”

“Whatever you say, princess.”

“My name is Melanie! Oh, wait. Maybe you’ll remember Smellanie better!”

His grin widened. “Ahhhh, now I remember you! You were that cute little blonde girl who used to sit in front of me in French class. You were the little goody two-shoes who always knew exactly how to respond in perfect French to the teacher, while the rest of us struggled to maintain a D average. You know you really didn’t smell, right? That was just a nickname for you.”

“I know I never smelled, thank you very much!”

“Well, Smellanie, can I say that you are just as cute now as you were back then?”

“No, you may not!”

This is Jessalyn’s story.

Flipside Jessalyn’s Story
Watching my best friend Addison of over twenty years dance with her new fiancée, I feel my heart bursting with love and pride for her. She was never meant to be with Curt, I knew from the moment he started charming his way into her life in high school, he was bad news. But… this man… this beautiful, tall, commanding man, Michael Crestmoore, that’s her soul mate. He looks at her like a man in love, a man that will always cherish her and love her no matter what. You can always tell looking at a man when he is in love. His face will have a softness to it, a glow if you will, and his smile will reach his eyes just by looking at her.
I feel Skyler’s fingers lightly dance over the back of my neck and I know he is thinking the same thing. My husband of fifteen years Skyler Gauge Rumley is the love of my life. Sandy brown hair that at one time… was thick and lush but, add one crazy ass wife and two kids later, you get a sexy receding hairline. Blue-green eyes, and a body built like a brick shit house he’s 6’3 and 240 but he is a big Teddy bear to our kids and a sex machine for my love pocket.
If it wasn’t for Skyler, I most likely wouldn’t be the person I am today. Besides Addison, he is the only one that knows the real story of where I came from and how I survived. Sure there are loads of crap rumors and shit stories but it’s a small town and that goes hand in hand. It’s not a tiny town just small compared to Milwaukee where my Uncle Joe lives.
Joe is the brother of my dead birther, Renee Sarah Allen. I say birther because she was neither a mom or mother not even a parent really, just a junky… loser… waste of life. That may sound cruel, but it’s the truth. She used before she was preggers used during her pregnancy and as soon as she shit me out she was back on the pipe three days later. That’s what my Grammy told me anyway.
My grammy, Evalyn Louise Grace was loved by everyone in town. She is the mother of the sperm donor. His name was Joel Robert Grace A.K.A fucktard. She tried several times to save him but…
like my birther he wasn’t worth saving. Grammy took in my Uncle Joe when it was “accidently” revealed that he was gay and the Birthers family shunned and shamed him. She loved him, protected him and made sure he knew what a real family does for one another.
Most days are easy peasy and I get along just fine, but… there are the days that I think back on the birther and sperm donor and wonder why, why were the drugs more important? Why was I just a bother? I just wanted a normal family, a loving Mom and Dad. I wanted to go shopping with a Mom and fishing with a Dad, but, my fate was not that. When my life turned tragic, it was in those minutes, those hours that I knew… I knew MY life would change… and I made a promise to my future children that I would never make them feel hopeless, lost or broken. They would however feel loved, protected and never afraid.

Excerpt

My eyes catch on a formation and I sit up, squinting, trying to figure out if I found it. I look at Levi and smile. “There, it’s right there.” Closing one eye—because everyone knows that helps you see better—I point to the stars and trace my finger around Corona Borealis.

“No way.” Levi sits up and leans toward me so the sides of our heads are touching. “Well, I’ll be damned.” We both turn to look at each other at the same time and our noses nearly touch. His smile slowly fades as his eyes drop to my mouth. The air around us grows thick and my heart hammers inside my chest. I want so badly to grab the back of his neck and yank him to me, but I refrain, knowing this is a step that he needs to take.

To my dismay, he clears his throat and backs up, putting space between the two of us. “Um … so … what do you want?”

“What do you mean, what do I want?” I ask, still too caught up in the moment to fully comprehend what he’s talking about.

“You won. So you get to pick your prize.”

“Hmmm.” I flop back down on the ground and tap my bottom lip with my finger. What do I want? “Nothing. I don’t want anything.” I look to the sky and then back to Levi. He lowers himself to the ground and looks over at me.

“Nothing?”

“Nope. This is perfect.” Our eyes stay locked for several seconds, but the connection is too intense and I have to look away or I’ll physically melt. “I’m just glad we got to spend some time together, just you and me. It’s been really nice, Levi. So this is it. You’ve already given me what I want.” I take a deep satisfying breath, chancing a quick glance back at him. He’s grinning from ear to ear, and I swear that his smile alone could light up the darkest of nights. His features have softened, his eyes are sparkling with happiness, and I’m glad it’s directed at me.

“Okay.” His warm voice evaporates into the evening air and I sigh, knowing that right now, in this very second, everything has changed. We seem to have found our footing again and some sort of peace, and I can only hope that it will grow from here.

Sabrina’s heart slammed into her throat. She unsnapped her holster as quietly as she

could, and shot a look over her shoulder. Strickland had seen it too. He drew his weapon and

nodded. She lifted her SIG P220 off her hip and took aim at the curtain.

“SFPD—I know you’re back there. Come out with your hands where I can see them,” she

said in a tone that gave little doubt as to her intent if her command wasn’t followed.

No response, just the slight flutter of the curtain that told her that who or whatever was

behind it was still there.

“I said, SFPD. Come out—”

A pair of feet appeared, nothing more than the tops and toes. They were small and pale in

the steady beam of her flashlight.

Holy shit. It was a kid.

She changed tactics, softened her tone but still held firm. “It’s okay, you’re safe. I’m a

police officer—it’s okay to come out now,” she said but didn’t lower her gun. There was a chance

the child behind the curtain wasn’t alone.

Small feet shuffled closer and a hand peeked out from the split between the curtains. The

opening was pulled wider to reveal a white face—dark, vacant eyes and a sharp nose set in a face

that was painfully thin. Equally thin shoulders and torso appeared as the kid moved forward

slowly. Just like the dead boy upstairs, he was naked.

“Are you alone back there?” she said. The kid didn’t answer, just stared at her with those

empty eyes. She motioned the child closer. “Come here, it’s okay.” She looked at Strickland and

tipped her head in the direction of the curtain. He nodded and moved forward, gun raised.

Sabrina reached out and latched onto the boy’s arm, pulling him toward her. The second

her fingers made contact, he went crazy—swinging and shouting in a language she didn’t

understand.

She dragged the boy clear of the curtain. He fought against her grip, screaming and

flailing, while Strickland did a sweep of the room behind it. He came out a few seconds later.

“Nothing. Just a mattress, TV and another camcorder.” he said over the din of the boy’s

screaming. “What the hell is he saying?”

She shook her head and looked at the boy, saw his face, white and stretched thin with

terror. He wasn’t speaking English but his fear was obvious. “Shhh, shhh—it’s okay. We’re here

to help,” she said, hoping her tone would convey the message her words couldn’t.

The boy darted away from her, nothing but a pale blur as he bolted toward freedom and

she started after him, pounding up the steps, Strickland two strides behind her. She reached the

top of the stairs and saw him running down the darkened hallway, darting this way and that.

“Stop him,” she shouted, hoping the uniform at the front door would be quick enough to

catch him.

The boy cut to the left and she followed, through the living room doorway. He saw the

uniform, blocking his way out and he darted to the left again, cutting across the room to the other

side of the house. Toward the room where the dead boy probably still lay stretched out on the

“Don’t go in there,” she said, even though he didn’t understand her. He disappeared

through the doorway seconds before she reached it. She skidded to a stop, blocking the doorway.

The coroner, Mandy Black, hunkered down next to the body on the floor but the whole of her

attention was concentrated on the boy who just burst into the room. He was crouching in the

corner furthest away from the doorway, knees drawn tight against his chest by arms so thin and

pale they looked like twigs, bleached white by the sun.

He started rambling again, eyes, like miniature black holes, aimed at the body on the

floor. She started to cross the threshold but Mandy threw up a hand and shook her head. Sabrina

stalled out mid-stride and watched as Mandy stood, crossing the room on slow and steady feet.

She said something in what sounded like the same language the boy was speaking and as if

Mandy had thrown a switch, he stopped talking.

Sabrina watched and listened. Mandy got closer and closer, still speaking the strange

language in a low, easy tone that seemed to sooth the boy. It sounded Slavic—maybe Russian.

Strange coming from the woman crouched on the floor. She must’ve asked him a question

because the boy nodded, eyes suddenly flooded with tears. He started to speak again but his

speech had lost its hysterical edge. Mandy got close enough to reach out and touch him but she

didn’t. She kept her hands at her sides, shaking her head as she crouched low and slow in front of

him. She kept talking. The boy kept listening.

“What. The. Fuck,” Strickland said behind her. “Coroner Barbie speaks gibberish.”

“It’s not gibberish, dickhead. It’s Russian,” Mandy said without looking up.

She felt a prickle, like electricity dancing along her skin. What was a Russian boy doing

in an abandoned house in San Francisco? One that had obviously been held against his will?

She looked away from the boy crouched in the corner to the one dead on the floor.

“Ask him if he knows the victim,” she said.

Mandy spoke quietly and the boy answered, shaking his head. “No. He said he’s never

seen him before.”

Sabrina studied the boy on the floor. He was small and blond. She entered the room and

squatted down next to the body. She peeled back a lid and looked at his eyes. They were milky

but she could see enough of the iris to know they were light in color.

She stood. “I need some air,” she said, brushing past Strickland on her way out the door.

She could feel him watching her and she silently urged him not to follow.

She didn’t need air. She needed to call Ben, because there was a very real chance that

she’d just found Leo Maddox.

offer from him previously, because the way I see it, she’s my mum and I should
be the one to make sure she has everything that she needs. I guess her stubborn
gene runs prominently in my veins. I remember clearly in my mind the way Max
looked at me, held me close and said, “Angel, please. Please allow me to
do this one thing for you. Let me get her what she needs. I don’t have a mum to
look after anymore, Jess. I guess I never really have. All I ask is that you
let me help you. I want to help you.”
As much as my stubbornness and pride screamed
out for me to say no, and as much as I wanted to say no, I couldn’t do it. I
suddenly found myself unable to say no to him and the pure, raw sadness that
swam in his eyes had me aching for him, aching for his past and the demons that
still currently haunt him to this day.
“Okay,” I whispered. It was all I
could manage, but for Max, it was enough. I just hope that one day I’ll be able
to tell him just how grateful I am.

I found myself wanting to write from a young
age. I have quite a few hidden stories on my computer somewhere. Maybe I will
have to dig them out and play around with them at some point.

“Fuck.” I slam my fist
into the desk before me and feel nothing but rage. I need to go after her. I
need to explain. “But isn’t this what you wanted?” The voice inside
my head whispers. “Isn’t this a nice easy way out?”
Everything Max has done has always
been at a cost to others around him. He wasn’t about to make that mistake
again. No longer will his selfish ways punish those close to him. Sometimes
it’s better to have had and lost than to never have had at all.
Finally after what felt like
forever, Jess was getting a glimpse of control over her life again and allowed
her defences to come crashing down, only to have what it guarded to be crushed
once again. Now, on the other side of the world away from her friends, she
doesn’t know what to do.
Should she stay or should she go?
